Title: Buying Single Game Football Tickets
Post by: Hawkinole on June 28, 2018, 01:21:18 AM
What is now the best way to buy single game tickets when your team is the visiting team and their allocation is sold out?

Last year the night b4 the Iowa-Wisconsin game I bought tickets on the 40 about 60 rows up at Camp Randall on StubHub for < $90 per ticket.

This year I am looking at tickets for FSU @ ND. StubHub and Vivid, and other sites have prices above my normal budget for the cheap seats, like well into the $200s per ticket for cheap seats. When Ty Willingham was coach I bought tickets out front of ND Stadium in Row 2 in the end zone for about $40 per ticket (2003), and a girl from St. Mary's College who operated the Aetna net took our pics as we stood on the grass during a timeout. It was the coolest seat I ever had.

ND was really bad in Ty W's last season. In November in South Bend what would the market to be like as compared to the digital market. My buddy is coming from Tampa, and I am only 300 miles away.

Under the upper deck? Those are the best seats in the house. You got a smokin' deal on those seats, even if they were on the other side. Between rows 50 and 60 +/- is about the sweet spot in Camp Randall.
FSU at ND is not going to be cheap. Depending on how each team performs, the price could go up even more.

Singles I would try to show up on site, unless you are trying to sit in a certain area.  Hand in the air, aggressive haggle as the buyer has the leverage when it comes to a single.

Wow. That's gonna be a huge game.

Does ND typically play the top teams in the Acc as per their arrangement? Or do they mostly load up on a bunch of BC, Syracuse and Pitt?

My understanding was that it was a rotation where they play each ACC team a set number of times per cycle or whatever.  I don't think that there is any loading up on either the top or the bottom.

I like to have tickets in hand, especially for a long trip. I sleep better.

At Camp Randall we were opposite side from the cantilevered part of the stadium. The seats were some of the best seats to watch the one of the historically worst offensive performances in football history.

Notre Dame is contractually bound to play 5-games against ACC teams each season. I was skeptical they would rotate the games, and appear at Wake or Duke, but they seem to have been rotating the games home and away, and it gives me a chance to to see FSU play in the Midwest.

This is why I am reaching out for advice.  I hadn't thought about two singles bought out front. I'll check with my buddy, but  when we have limited time to spend together, and we see each other every five years or so, two singles in disparate parts of the stadium, might not be the way to go.

I am not sure what the market is like outside ND Stadium having only been there once, when ND was playing poorly.

Where is NDRules when we need him? :)

We went to USC at ND a few years ago,  there's a very healthy ticket resale market in So Bend, meaning supply.  I do wonder if UGA game was a recent exception, as that game seemed to maintain its high premium.   I admit, I misread your original post as someone seeking a single ticket, not single game ticket.

I still love showing up to haggle.

Oh, they've found it. Trust me.
If you really want them here, just say the word.

In this digital age I have become more acclimated to buying in advance; I am not sure how big the outdoor market is or will become in the future. That said, there were a lot of tickets for sale on game day morning on StubHub before I left for the the Iowa-Wisconsin game last fall. The market did not drop. I thought the market would precipitously drop that morning. I think I may have bought the tickets that morning on StubHub just before I left on the 2.5 hour drive to the game.
In 1985 I had Iowa season tickets. That was the year Iowa was #1 and met Michigan #2 in Kinnick Stadium. Dad did not have season tickets, and he tailgated with us. He bought a single ticket out front for $10 as we walked into the biggest home game in Iowa football hx. As you say, usually one can score a cheap single even for a big game.

I bought a very good seat outside the stadium that day for a good price.  Was probably only 10 rows up on the sideline
but, I've ALWAYS been lucky

I should say I love stub hub too, it's just I won't give up on playing the on site route.  I avoid printed tickets.   Before too long teams won't issue tickets any more unfortunately.   NBA has led that charge, which makes gifting tickets a lot harder for business etc.

Speaking of Notre Dame Vs Syracuse, they face each other this coming season at Yankee Stadium. Tickets from the usual resellers start at almost $400!!! What the heck? I’m puzzled as to whether it’s the venue because I attended a game there a few years ago and paid $75 for lower deck seats. Or is it Notre Dame they’re charging for which still doesn’t make sense because I attended one of their higher profile games a few years ago and paid about $80.
$400!

seller ALWAYS start out ridiculously high, they can always lower prices as the game nears.

buying tickets for any game 3 months in advance is foolish

The market hasn't even started.   Never buy on secondary for a sold out event this far out.  Of course you can and should scout at this point as you never know who looks to dump.

Those $400(!) tickets I was earlier venting about are now down to $85. The Maryland Vs Texas cheapseats starting at $90 are now under $40. But the Virginia Tech @ Old Dominion tickets have held steady at about $175.

For Michigan games see StubHub.  Wisconsin @Michigan tickets near the 50 yd. line and 50 rows up were just under $500 each a few weeks ago after StubHub fees, etc..  If both teams stay undefeated it will only go up from there.

I usually buy on StubHub because I used to have to drive a distance and didn't want to take a chance.

I was headed to the ND-UGA game last year and prices kicked off at $400 for bad seats and folks said I should wait.  They went to $700+, so I ended up watching on TV.  ND seems to attract high prices, and Dawg fans were snapping up anything available for that one.

Now I can "afford" to drive to Athens and take a shot with the local vendors.  If I don't snag something I can walk to a bar nearby and do OK.

I may go to a GT game and I figure there would be no problem unless they were hosting a Clemson/FSU/UGA kind of opponent, maybe VT.

Stubhub has been reliable in my experience, though expensive of course.  I got tickets to a UGA game at Ole Miss on the 40 for not much a couple years ago, something like $125 a piece.  The game did not sell out.  That surprised me.
