Title: Rivalry Week
Post by: MrNubbz on November 25, 2024, 07:43:21 AM
Michigan is back to its traditional position - looking up to tOSU in Big Ten standings. Before Stalions they hadn't  dominated squat since The Era of Tuberculosis and Covered Wagons. In an odd way though I'm going to miss Booger,I respected his troll game enough - He's a cheating shit head for sure, but he's at least somewhat entertaining as a villain. He always seemed to moan and contort his face like he took to many gas station boner pills.  But beat the posse out of Dodge he did.

Well at least Mel Tucker ended up undefeated against Harbaugh. And with more major bowl victories in the same time frame - 3rd party smack talk for sure but at least refreshing

Any how Ohio State with w/o it's two best O-lineman could have a game on it's hands with M's tough line and a seemingly resurgent Offense. Moore will pull out all the stops to win this one as will the seniors. game is in the 'Shoe so there's that. Just hope Sherrone keeps his time clock management skills in place for this one. Wouldn't be shocked by any score tbh, hoping the walvies go behind the woodshed to restore some order. Over to you slappies distinguished colleagues

Michigan is going to have a tough time doing anything on offense.

I hope the M guys REALLY enjoyed a couple seasons of winning and their tainted title, cause it now looks like they will be paying for it for the foreseeable future

I sure hope you are right!

Ohio State's defense has been a little weird.  Statistically they are phenomenal and they have been lights out for long stretches but they also just seem to forget to play once in a while.  Also, they have this weird penchant for starting SLOW.  Two examples:

Against Penn State:
The Nittany Lions first drive went 61 yards in 14 plays for a FG but their next scoring drive wasn't until the third quarter and in between those two, tOSU only allowed:

Against Indiana the contrast is even more stark.  On their first drive the Hoosiers offense looked like a hot knife cutting through butter.  They methodically drove 70 yards in 11 plays to take an early 7-0 lead.  Indiana's next scoring drive was in garbage time when they were down by 24 late in the 4th quarter.  In between those:
In both games the defense came out and kinda gave us tOSU fans a scare by giving up a ton of yards on the very first possession but then they locked down and looked fantastic.

Even with the slow starts, if they can perform at the level they did against PSU and IU, it is hard for me to see a viable path to victory for the visitors on Saturday.

I wonder if Penn St fans refer to this week as "no rivalry" week

Eh, now that they are on board with NIL I'm guessing they'll be fine

I'm not sold on the coaching staff

no amount of money can overcome poor coaching

The NCAA is likely to bail them out on that front.

It's almost as though they both scripted their opening drive.

I cant recall there even being one, but I also believe the Big Ten had the "no night game in November" rule until 2012ish

Made it back to 2001, and didnt find any, and I feel pretty confident there were none prior to that, so this would be the first.

In 2020 they postponed once and the scheduled makeup game was 7:30, and then was outright cancelled

I had never thought about what UCLA does when USC plays ND rivalry week. Fresno, huh?

When did they switch Maryland from Rutgers to Penn State? Is it on a rotation? I don't recall Penn State protecting any annual rivalries.

It has been on a rotation ever since they joined the league.  MSU-PSU was never a real rivalry, but they spent 20 years selling it.  So at least it became a tradition, if not a rivalry.  then they added Maryland and Rutgers to the rotation, to make sure you always have two games that nobody cares about

Our rival is a dumpster fire.  Will be glad to piss on them to put it out.  The most epic collapse in modern college football history couldn't have happened to a more perfect program.

is that ucf v uconn rivalry still a thing?    relegated to native Floridians getting sassy with the snowbirds from Connecticut since Covid.

this is indeed the first 'night' kickoff for Purdue v IU.

Does Indiana take out their frustrations on poor ole Purdue? Or is it one of those Spoilermaker/OSU beasts them twice, sorta things?

Considering the Boilers place in the standings it would be borderline shock the world. And it certainly would shock IU officials wondering why they backed up the trucks for Cignetti

What makes a contest a rivalry game?  I think we all know the main parts, anything else?

Proximity (Usually, ND-USC aside).
History/tradition
Competitiveness (No side really dominates).

You could add national significance, but I don't think that is always required but it helps.  Alabama-Auburn is often considered the 2nd or 3rd "best" rivalry game even though one team has dominated, usually, and the other has a somewhat mediocre history.

USCe-Clemson is big in that state.

I had never thought about what UCLA does when USC plays ND rivalry week. Fresno, huh?
Back in the Pac-12,  the week before Thanksgiving you would have

USC-UCLA,  Cal-Stan

Then the week of Thanksgiving,  UCLA would play Cal.

Other years,  UCLA would just take Thanksgiving week off.

Yup, lots of schools finished before Thanksgiving back in the day.  Wasn't the Michigan - Ohio State game usually played before T-day?

Yup, lots of schools finished before Thanksgiving back in the day.  Wasn't the Michigan - Ohio State game usually played before T-day?
Yes, and back in the days of the 11-team Big Ten,  not only did the Big Ten finish the week before Thanksgiving,  but there was always 1 team left out during rivalry week.

After PSU joined,  PSU and MSU started playing each other in the last game of the season.

 For a few
years Iowa-Minn-Wisc did a 3 team rotation,  where 2 teams played the last week and the other team had to find an OOC game to play,  or else be done 2 weeks before Thanksgiving.

In the late 80's,  before PSU joined,  Iowa would play Minn and MSU would play Wisc during the last week.

Going way back to the 50"s and early 60's,  Iowa would often play Notre Dame in the last game of the season.  Iowa eventually cancelled the series after the famous fainting Irish game where the Irish faked injuries to stop the clock and score a last second TD.

I had never thought about what UCLA does when USC plays ND rivalry week. Fresno, huh?

When did they switch Maryland from Rutgers to Penn State? Is it on a rotation? I don't recall Penn State protecting any annual rivalries.
This needs to stop.

The Badgers went to Hawaii quite a bit, as a reward for the players and fans. They also hosted pastries at times.

1823 Days Since Ohio State Last beat Michigan
It astounds me that you guys are proud of flagrant cheating but ok:

Michigan's last legitimate win over Ohio State was 13 years ago today, November 26, 2011.  That is 4,749 days ago.

In the 1,823 days since Ohio State's 56-27 win on November 30, 2019 we had:

Oh, and prior to this illegitimate streak by your dirty cheaters, Ohio State won eight straight from 2012-2019 so there were 3,654 days between Michigan's win in 2011 and their win* in 2021.

*Soon to be vacated due to Michigan's unethical behavior.

There were certain years, I think when the calendar fell a certain way, where the final week was Thanksgiving.  1995 and 2001 I believe for certain did.  But yes typically the opposite was the case.  I believe they decided to change it the last couple years of 11 teams, because most other conferences had by that point, and several had CCGs, so Big Ten teams had an extra 2 weeks off.  Mix in the NCG moving deeper into January, and I think by 2006/2007, Ohio State had like 6 weeks off between the Michigan game and the national championship

This is NOT a dead horse.

Michigan fans were still crowing over Tressel's MUCH less significant transgressions immediately prior to their own scandal.  Additionally, the NCAA process hasn't fully played out yet.  The punishments haven't yet been formalized.  The current HC obstructed the NCAA investigation and was promoted by the dirty institution AFTER they knew about that.  It will never be a dead horse after they did that.

This is nowhere close to a dead horse.

From my perspective (this board) it's a dead horse.

The NCAA isn't going to do damn thing. They have no power whatsoever.

Yes, sometimes Iowa hosted a cupcake in its last game,  but it backfired one year in 2007 when Iowa got upset by WMU and missed a bowl game, dropping to 6-6.

2007 was one of those weird years when 10 out of 11 Big Ten teams were bowl elligible, and only had 8 slots available.  So the 2 teams that went 6-6 stayed home.

There was also 1995, the year that gave us the worst Thanksgiving game in the history of bad Thanksgiving games--and the last tie in CFB history: Wisconsin 3, Illinois 3. Another moment I was happy to be doing something that precluded watching a Badger game.

And Badge, ND at USC--and you complaining about ND in any way possible--is proof that college football hasn't lost all of its traditions, at least not yet. :-)

This year, the University of Second Choice has a real opportunity to screw up the Irish season--even more than NIU did.

Cal-UCLA was never a real rivalry. UCLA's only real rival is USC.

I like Wisconsin/Minnesota as an end-of-the-season rivalry game, but I can't for the life of me figure out why Wisconsin is -2. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I would put some money on the Goophs.

I was waiting for that one. :)

There was also 1995, the year that gave us the worst Thanksgiving game in the history of bad Thanksgiving games--and the last tie in CFB history: Wisconsin 3, Illinois 3. Another moment I was happy to be doing something that precluded watching a Badger game.

I would lay money on the Badgers if i gambled.  they need 1 game to be bowl eligible and have more to play for.  bounces will go Wisc way -this will end up being a close game probably a final possession type game

The Badger D gives me no confidence that they will be able to stop the Gopher run game. Just look at what Iowa and Nebraska did to them. Yes, it could be a close game, and I think the Badgers will be motivated to a) keep the 22-year bowl streak intact and b) keep the Axe. This would be the first time in a long time that the trophy case is empty.

I doubt that the Gophers are going to come out flat. PJ already has two wins at Camp Randall (and arguably should have 3), and did so with strong starts in all of those.

Yeah, I have very little confidence in this Badger team. I think Minnesota is a typically solid middle-of-the-old-Big-Ten-pack team. The Badgers do not appear to be. As has been pointed out elsewhere, they seem very Jeckyl and Hyde, given their convincing wins and their gross losses. I guess they played Penn State and Oregon pretty strong at home, notwithstanding the losses, so there is some reason to think they will look better at Camp Randall than they did in Lincoln. But Minnesota will grind away, and Wisconsin hasn't beaten a team that consistently does that.

I hope the Badgers suprise me, but my guess is that the bowl streak ends.

I’m at home and a friend with a tight schedule could do something around the start of the Axe game. I figured I’d catch the end, but after the Nebraska game, not the most mad to be somewhat out of pocket for the bulk of it.

I think you are overly down on the Badgers.  They got screwed by the schedule gods.

HFA is hard to understand because it isn't the same thing for all teams.  HFA is most beneficial in the most closely matched games.  Thus, if your team is really good, you want your best opponents at home.  Ie, this season:
Wisconsin's schedule sucked because they got HFA in a bunch of games where it didn't do them any good:
My argument is that HFA didn't help the Badgers in any of those games.

Then they played on the road and lost at Iowa, USC, and Nebraska.  Given that none of those games were particularly close maybe it didn't matter but I'd like UW's chances a lot better in Madison.  I also like their chances against Minnesota in Madison.

Wisconsin has some really good performances.  Losing to Oregon by 3 is the second best game against Oregon this year behind only Ohio State's losing by one.  Beating Purdue by 46 is the best performance this year against Purdue, up there with tOSU (45), PSU (39 in W. Laf), and Ore (35 in W. Laf).  My point is that when UW plays well, they are close to the top-4.  The problem is that when they play poorly they are close to the bottom three.

I agree and that is my point.  In terms of records/standings a loss is a loss.  If you figure HFA is worth 3-5 then that 3 point loss at home to Oregon is a 9-13 point loss in Eugene but either one of those is one loss in terms of final standings.

I am sure you have heard these before.  These jokes are over 40 years old.

What does the N on the Nebraska helmet stand for?  Nowledge!  (This joke works better if it's told verbally)

Why does the Corn in Iowa always lean to the West?  Because Nebraska sucks (and Illinois blows)

Why does Minnesota play on artificial turf?  So the cheerleaders won't graze.

What does the average Iowa State student get on the ACT test?  Drool.

Also I feel so bad for Ohio St and Michigan.  Their rivalry is so lame.  They have had a hundred years to come up with a catchy rivalry name and a cool trophy.  I mean iowa and Nebraska came up with the Heroes game name and a cool trophy in like 2 seconds after it was announced they would be Black Friday rivals every year. OSU amd Mich got to get with the times (I'm kidding, I'm kidding)

They took over Thursday nights all season, which is why college stopped scheduling good Thursday games.  The antitrust exemption prevents them from playing Friday or Saturday games until after Thanksgiving, but says nothing about Thursday

I don't think there is any way UGA beats the Institute by 18 points tomorrow.  This is Tech's Super Bowl x 1000% every year. If the Techmites were to somehow beat the hated Dwags Behind the Bushes, all 4 women on the Tech campus would end up pregnant.  I look for Beck's  Butterfingers to drop at least4 catchable passes on 3rd down alone but the Red and Black to prevail 23-14.

I believe the Tulane coach is waiting on his former boss at Kentucky to decide if he’s gonna hit the trail.

The Memphis coach is an odd spot. He has been pretty good, but kind of uneven. He certainly isn’t generating much enthusiasm. So I can imagine him looking for a get out of town job, but I’m not sure yet what that would be.

I think some at LSU will talk about it but not push for it very hard.  The Vandy coach might get scarfed.  I wonder if Penn State will be happy if they continue to win most games and lose to the elite teams routinely.  (Maybe they try hiring a Vandy coach.)

UCLA seems to have a door that revolves.

I have a hunch the following coaches will soon be gone

Mike Locksley ar MD
Gus Malzahn at UCF

Some are saying Ryan Walters at Purdue.  But it seems kinda early to me to fire Walters.  Usually you just need to show some kind of progress.  Purdue did lose a couple of games in OT and was the only team that had play all 4 top-4 teams in the Big Ten.  I say he gets another year.

Locksley has had enough years at MD to prove himself and get MD over that hump,  but I think he just doesn't have it as a head coach.

I keep forgetting yesterday was Friday, so my internal stress is "off", sort of, I can watch games and enjoy whatever happens.  Cool.

It's a frigid almost intolerable 33°F here right now.  I'm not sure I will survive.

After the Dawgs fell behind like 77-6 last night, I switched over to watching Apollo 13 with my wife.  This new cable box apparently comes with a bunch of free movie channels (???) and better reception, but her TV upstairs doesn't have one yet, we get one "free", the second is $130.  The good news is I was paying $7 a month for the second box, that should go away.

My TV must be 10+ years old, it's a 1 K 65", and it looks really good now.  This probably saved me $2500.

I have an option to sign up for a black market illegal streaming TV service.  Every channel there is.  Movie channels, NFL Ticket, MLB, everything.  $120/year but you pay 2 years in advance - $240.  You get two Fire Sticks. so Two TVs.  About once a quarter or less they change the scrambling on a few bigtime channels....... you simply call the number to let them know and in a few minutes it's resolved.

I "get" complaining about bad calls, we've all done it, I was pretty bad when I played.  I can see posting something about them, and then life goes on, nothing changes as a result, I suspect it makes the poster feel justified for a minute, and then frustrated.

Dawg fans still complain about a bad call in the '99 game.

some teams "seem" to get more calls than the average

it's curious/interesting that those teams are often, blue blood helmet teams that "might" want to be protected by the league for the good of the game or for $$$

check the KC Chiefs this NFL season for an example
or the long history of Ohio St. & Michigan in the Big
Or Bama & recently Georgia in the SEC

Unless they're doing illegal gambling stuff on their own, refs don't give a shit who wins a game.  They want to do a good job (as best they can) and not have anything outrageous happen.

The only crew-related exception I can think of would be like a rogue racist crew circa 1977 or something like that.

I'm not, but if it was the Jags getting similar calls, would anyone have noticed?

Higher stakes as a team with a good record.  More eyeballs on the Chiefs.  More passion about their outcomes, both for and against.  Seems like an easy situation to see things a little sideways, no?

When it happens 9 out of 12 games w/ all 9 being one score games
and even Chief's fans admit to their "luck".

Absolutely.
But also, wasn't this seen as a skill in the past?  Aren't the Chefs just being gritty?  Know how to win the close ones?  2002 OSU and all that?

My statistical mind would just cite the small sample size within a season and have confidence that it will go the other way next year.

When you want to know the reason for something, you don't just pick the reason that seems best or you want to be true.  You say "I don't know" until convincing evidence appears.  No list of scores is that evidence.  You have 32 teams and 1 or 2 are going to have exceptional 1-score records, aren't they?  Just as I'm sure there are 1 or 2 with dreadful 1-score records.

A bell curve, if we used data from many seasons.  Can a team with the spotlight on it not be one of the fortunate ones?
Title: Re: Rivalry Week
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on November 30, 2024, 11:47:17 AM
I'd also just ask, because I have no inkling, of which teams on their schedule so far are thought of as good as the Chefs?  Which have equal talent/expectations?
From my VERY limited NFL knowledge, that's a pretty shit schedule, no?  If so, I'd find the lack of blowout wins more remarkable than the close wins.

The whole situation is odd, though.
A team in KC getting breaks from the refs, as told to by NFL brass?  Mahomes does State Farm commercials and is a big darling?  The TE is dating a pop star.  The TE's brother gets some fame as well.
Not exactly the perfect storm of a diabolical villainy, at least not an effective one.  Wouldn't the NFL want the Giants to be amazing?  Or the Cowboys?  Like any of 20 other franchises ahead of the Chefs.

Conspiracy thinking tends to omit the obvious sometimes.

HC Andy Reid (is he still their HC?) couldn't get over the hump with the Eagles, but finds success in KC.  Do the refs LOVE Andy Reid?  Is the NFL in cahoots to uplift Mahomes, or did he just succeed and thrive with the other 21 guys, winning multiple SBs?

I hate all these "since 2000" statements.  It's not that it happened in 2000, it's that official college football stats were barely a thing until then.

Baseball statkeepers did a better job in 1924 than college football ones did in 1994.  That PLUS the NCAA having access to tons of during-the-game stats being kept, but not bothering to incorporate them as official.

It's maddening for people like me.

Kirk Ferentz was looking for the right words to describe the Hawkeyes' 13-10 walk-off victory over Nebraska football on Friday night. The Iowa football coach found them in his postgame comments in the form of a famous theoretical physicist.

"Just walking off the field, Albert Einstein quote kind of hit me about, 'Not everything that can be counted counts' and then, 'Not everything that counts can be counted.' I think that sometimes explains the way things going in sports," Ferentz said. "That's what's so interesting as much as you want to analyze it, slice it, dice it, cut it up, all that stuff. I know statistics are important, but sometimes you just have to find a way to win, and our team did that."

Iowa improved to 8-4 on the year, and Ferentz is now one win away from tying Woody Hayes in career victories as an active Big Ten Conference coach.

How many times do Iowa fans have to explain this.

Yards don't matter

Number of first downs don't matter.

Only thing that matters is who has the most points at the end of the game.

Geesesh,  Brian Ferentz figured this out a long, long time ago.  The spirit of Brian continues to live on in Iowa City even though he moved on last year.

Michigan didn't start any fight. Sawyer was just being a little pussy all in his feelings who couldn't take losing and getting embarrassed AGAIN for the 4th time in a row.

Hey here's an idea, you don't want them planting the flag in your stadium? Don't let them win the game. Do something on the field about it, not after the game is over. Definition of a punk ass pussy.

Michigan lost to Texas and they planted their flag in the Big House. What'd Michigan players do? Go to the locker room.....

Don't want someone planting their flag in your stadium....it's pretty simple....win the damn game. Otherwise shut the fuck up and just take the L like a man.

Florida certainly exceeded expectations.  I noted this after the LSU win, they were playing hard, I thought.  A good sign for them.

FSU ... well, they didn't.  Probably a record collapse in one year.

As for academics, Florida has a good reputation as a public school, so do UNC/UVA/UM/Cal and a few others.  But this is a football site.  For nonplayers, it's of some benefit to have a degree from a better school, duh.

I interviewed a lot of candidates for employment back in the day, and the quality didn't really align with the reputation of the school often at all, which surprised me for a while.

Meh, I'd prefer my team not do it, but it's just grass.  Don't want it to happen, don't lose.   Can't tell you how many times over the past 4 decades of mostly subpar Texas teams I've seen the opponent stomp on our logo or dance on it or attempt to plant a flag.  It's not upsetting because it's "childish" or "classless," it's upsetting because it means your team lost to someone you really didn't want them to lose to.

stealing a mascot the night before the game is childish

most of this childish behavior towards a rival is harmless and not a big deal - a little back and forth in good clean fun.

most of this childish behavior towards a rival is harmless and not a big deal - a little back and forth in good clean fun.
it's a fine line, but desecrating the 50 yard line or brawling, especially by hitting opponents with your helmet is over the top
It's also stupid to remove your helmet when about to become engaged in a brawl.  Leave that sucker on for your own protection.

I just think it's silly to call out regular rivalry behavior as "chilidish."  Watching 18-year-olds play a game is childish, getting emotional over the outcomes of games played by 18-year-olds is childish, being a fan is childish, playing the game yourself is childish.

Physically assaulting someone when they haven't assaulted you isn't childish-- it's dangerous, and stupid.  Especially if you remove your head protection in order to do so.

, but desecrating the 50 yard line
Desecrating? C’mon man. This isn’t holy land. Calling this childish is such a soft reaction. I’ve been in Ann Arbor for this rivalry when OsU player go above and beyond to sing Carmen Ohio in way that was over the top, but they took the win and deserved the celebration. The fact that this take is desecrating the 50 yard line is worse than OSU player starting this brawl or fans caught spitting on Michigan players from above walking in is worse than swinging a flag around after victory is weak.

Michigan was told they didn’t stand a chance, we’re going to get blown out, weren’t nearly the talent as OSu, shouldn’t be on the same field… then won. Maybe you don’t like underdogs or Cinderella stories, but being told you don’t belong and you prove people wrong, deserves celebration. Of course, maybe your side thinks the 1980 US Olympic hockey team was childish too.

What in the world does Uzi Smith charge have anything to do with this topic? Yeah, only Michigan has a player with an off the field incident and therefore they aren’t a good program. Dude that’s an absurd take and connection.

jack Sawyer having a meltdown and being the reason for the aftermath and screaming he wasn’t going to let the flag planting happen is hilarious. Maybe if the dude could make a tackle, he wouldn’t have had to watch it, but he is one of the main reason Michigan was able to pull it off because he couldn’t bring down Mullings.

When did all the 50-yard line stuff start?  I recall Terrell Owens sprinting to the 50 after a TD in Dallas when he was with SF.  Then Emmitt scored and ran to the 50 as a rebuttal.

Idk about before that.

Yes, the activity on the field is consensual and specifically protected under the law.  Anything beyond that would be criminal assault.

But you already know this and are being deliberately pedantic.

If you want to say, "plant the flag is fine, just be ready for the consequences" then an appropriate response is "assaulting someone for insulting grass is fine, just be ready for the potential jailtime."  All fair and even.

Yeah, osu players ripping the flag away and running off with it and him just grabbing it back as it wasn’t their property to run off with justifies 3 of them, with helmets and pads on, shoving him and trying to put him to the ground. let's let law enforcement sort it out - law enforcement from both sides used pepper spray
Michigan players were assaulting people right along ... takes two to tango
Bucks may have thrown the first punch, but Michigan provoked the melee.

I don't think either has the moral high ground
I'll wait to see what the officials in charge have to say after the investigation

Yes, of course neither side has the moral high ground.  Which is why I felt compelled to correct a Buckeye fan who was attempting to take the high ground.

As for letting the the officials resolve it, that's fine for the legal issues and potential conference rules violations.  But I don't see any ambiguity in the moral implications, both sides are guilty and neither gets to thumb its nose at the other.

The Big Ten Conference has fined Michigan and Ohio State $100k each for their involvement in Saturday’s postgame brawl, the conference announced.

“The Big Ten Conference has determined that the actions of both teams following the Michigan-Ohio State football game on Saturday, November 30, 2024, violated the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy,” the conference said in a press release.

Following Michigan’s 13-10 victory, a Wolverines player attempted to plant a Michigan banner on the Buckeyes logo at midfield in Ohio Stadium, which led to pushing and shoving and eventually punches being thrown by members of both teams. Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen snatching the flag and throwing it away.

It took several minutes for stadium security and police to separate the two teams, with pepper spray being deployed to get the situation under control, according to multiple media reports. The television broadcast showed players wiping their eyes and coughing in the aftermath of the brawl.

“Not only did the actions of both teams violate fundamental elements of sportsmanship such as respect and civility, the nature of the incident also jeopardized the safety of participants and bystanders,” the Big Ten added.

According to the Big Ten, no other fines or suspensions will be handed out.

They (NCAA and conferences) need to end this flag planting BS.  Not happy with Michigan's attempt to do so in Columbus or how the home team handled it.  The $100K fine per school is not nearly painful enough so that schools crack down on this going forward.   The game was over so if punches were thrown by anyone criminal charges should be brought and suspensions levied.

NCAA/conferences will likely ban it in the off-season imo. And it will be sweet just knowing it was a 6-5 Michigan team beating #2 ranked Ohio State in their house as 3 touchdown dogs which lead to the ban. :)

I mean....every team that wins the game usually celebrates after the win on whatever field they are on....home, away, neutral....don't see a problem with it.

counter to your counterpoint: don't want them celebrating on your home field? win the fucking game. otherwise take the lumps and shut the fuck up and hold this L like a man.

Jack Sawyer wanted to be a tough guy after the game. Wasn't so tough when Max Bredeson was burying him into the ground on a block for a touchdown or when Kalel Mullings broke his tackle at the LOS on that pivotal 3rd and 6 and bounced it outside and up the field for 30 yards which effectively was the dagger in the heart. Jack Sawyer gets Mullings down there it's 4th and 6 and Michigan is out of FG range and has to punt the ball.

this season has sucked so much ass....I've gouged out my eyeballs watching Davis Warren & Alex Orji attempt to play QB- and then after getting the #1 overall recruit in the country who happens to be at the position of greatest need- QB- Bryce Underwood-and then like a week later beating #2 ranked Ohio State with their $20+ million roster (Urbs said it was the best roster ever) on their home turf as 3 TD dogs- beating them for the 4th year in a row- and knocking them out of the B1G CG....buddy....doesn't really get much sweeter. Season has been redeemed in the span of a week and IDGAF about a bowl game right now.

Only whining I saw at all was from that major fucking pussy Jack Sawyer crying like a bitch while Ryan Day was standing around shell shocked as his soul had just left his body. If only fake tough guy Jack Sawyer had that fight in him to stop Kalel Mullings on 3rd and 6 instead of whiff on the tackle...then maybe just maybe Michigan wouldn't have been in position to celebrate and Born on 3rd base wouldn't have just lost 4 in a row.

I mean it's been 4 in a row for Jack Sawyer. He should be pretty good at losing the game by now.

Hell of a pick. Played a great game. Hopefully he can repeat it in the playoffs.

Oh man, Jeem ran off. He knew the score.
I mean Jeem got offered a $16.5 million a year contract with complete control by an NFL team who already had a young 3rd or 4th year 25 year old franchise QB in place who also happens to be one of the 4 or 5 most talented QB's in the entire league. There is no world in which Jeem would've ever turned that job down. Period.

you tell yourself the reality of a situation? cool.

Jeem has made no bones about his Super Bowl aspirations and longing for the NFL. It was not exactly a secret....

And the Chargers offered him $6.5 million more per year than Michigan was paying him, complete control of football operations, and oh yeah they already had the most important piece to win in the NFL in place- a legitimate franchise QB. There is no universe that exists where he was turning that job down...especially after winning a Natty. Mission accomplished at Michigan, what else was there for him to do there?

Given the Ravens' penchant for coming viscerally unglued at the worst possible times (see the 2nd half of last year's AFC Championship Game), that may not be as hard as you think.

Winning the AFC involves winning January games in both Kansas City and Buffalo. It can be done, but it ain't that easy.

I mean Kansas City is the scary team at the end, but they just keep escaping.  11-1, but 11th in point differential.  Substantially behind teams like the Commanders and Broncos.

I think the Lions, Eagles and Bills are the class of the league.  Lions defense is hilariously injured now, and I can't imagine Nick Sirianni winning a Super Bowl.  If this isn't the Bills year, it never will be.

his pick, with any competent qb would have been a td.. Not only was the pass terrible, but it was incredibly late. That being said, it was a great read by Sawyer. That being said, he got destroyed on the touchdown run and missed the Mullings tackle that was one of the final nails in the coffin. Not sure how it can be termed a great game, when it was a great play and massive couple failures in key moments.

Lastly, everyone can defend Sawyer for defending their midfield or whatnot, but the dude is always the biggest shit talker before the game. There's plenty of video of Michigan taking the field and plenty of buckeyes, including the "captain" as close as they can get running their mouths. The more you run your mouth and tell the world your rival sucks, the more you look stupid by not letting the opposition celebrate after they did the part that actually mattered.

I think you're right, and if they faced off in the playoffs/superbowl I'd pick the Chiefs to beat each of them by 3-6 points. :)

Fair enough.  Point remains, I'll pick them to win a post-season game over those 3 teams outright, every time.

Agree 100%.

Sawyer made a great play on the INT but at the same time that was an atrocious throw by a god awful walk-on QB. Davis Warren is truly awful. Warren had his TE hilariously wide open all by himself with no Buckeye within 10 yards of him and not only did he throw that ball 3 seconds late he threw it low on a line with no air under it. I do give credit to Sawyer for reading and reacting and pulling off the blocker and snagging the INT and saving a TD, but man....Davis Warren just really fucking sucks.

Aside from that one massive play, Sawyer didn't impact the game much. Sawyer had 0 TFL's and 0 sacks. Sawyer got buried by Max Bredeson on Michigan's lone touchdown run and on the run which effectively won Michigan the game- Sawyer had Mullings dead to rights in the backfield and whiffed on the tackle.

Sawyer was basically a non-factor in that game like he has been in all 4 games vs Michigan. JTT & Sawyer probably the two most overhyped 5* DE's I can ever remember at Ohio State. Other than 5* DE Zach Harrison. All 3 of those guys were top 10 overall recruits in the nation- they were ranked as HS players in that Nick Bosa, Joey Bosa, Chase Young territory and none of them ever even remotely came close to living up to that. In 4 games vs Michigan JTT has 0 sacks. Had himself one whale of a game couple years ago vs Penn State though.

This is the part that should be most eye opening to people when talking about it. From a pure visual analysis, rather than going to the stats, Sawyer isn't remotely even close to those three. I hated playing against those three guys because they were absolutely dominant and the best of the best. And all three of those guys, were confident, leaders and celebratory guys, but celebrated their successful moments. Sawyer to me comes across the guy that does more of his celebrating and mouth running off the field or before the game. The other 3 were guys I would have loved to see in Maize and Blue. Sawyer is a guy I'm glad he never was. No respect for him, while tremendous respect for the other three, but in personality and talent.

actually- it was Ty Hamilton that whiffed on Mullings 27 yard run.  Sawyer was badly held.
