We are finally done with the election, and now are football games can be interrupted by commercials for new cars and Christmas Cokes. It's still relatively mild in Columbus for early November. The sun room is comfortable enough for shorts and a sweatshirt. But our half cord of wood arrived on Wednesday, and my wife convinced the kids to stack it, so as soon as the temperature drops a bit more, we are back to lighting fires in the house.
Schedule
- Iowa at UCLA, Friday, 9 pm, FOX
- Purdue at #2 OSU, Noon, FOX
- Minnesota at Rutgers, Noon, NBC
- Michigan at #8 Indiana, 3:30, CBS
- Maryland at #1 Oregon, 7 pm, BTN
- Washington at #6 PSU, 8 pm, Peacock
Others
- Florida at #5 Texas, Noon, ABC
- #3 Georgia at #16 Ole Miss, 3:30, ABC
- #11 Alabama at #15 LSU, 7:30, ABC

my living room seems chilly this afternoon/evening
Thermostat set at 68
I think it's because I have an ice pack on my groin
I'm interested in the Hawk/Bruin game tonight
a few of my friends are there
I haven't watched much Hawk football.
I've attended 4 Husker games and played too much golf
I'm pretty sure I won't be attending the Badger game in Lincoln - last home game
the golf course is closed and the hernia surgery ended my golf season
-
UCLA actually looking competent lately, might be a good game. Iowa is a one trick pony on offense, but that's better than a no trick pony like they have been
-
be better for me if it started now and not so much later
-
Was hoping for "Nick Saban aint Walking through that Door"
-
Ucla w great look tonight
-
big noon in lubbock???
because Prime??
-
5 turnovers in the first half?
Connor Onion in the booth?
Iowa 31 rushing yards in the half?
-
Y'all are missin a pretty good game
-
Maybe the Bruins are pretty good?
-
Love Foster's outfits. Looks like a Dad of a player.
-
With all the pub around BSU's Jeanty, I hadn't realized Iowa's RB had 1200 yards @ 7.5 a carry and 19 TDs.
UCLA stopped his ass. Wow!
-
Florida @ Texas will be over and ugly 20 min into the game.
Lagway will try to play, but as a big, athletic QB, a hamstring injury isn't going to fly. And after 2 almosts vs Tennessee and Georgia, this group of 20 year olds are going to have limited emotional resilience.
Because they're 20 year olds, not robots.

Impressed that UCLA has rounded into a decent team. They looked dead to start the season

I bet a small sum on Iowa -6.5, and when I saw the final, I just kind of had to laugh.

Oh, it’s a mess. But the tally is definitely losing.

DON'T DO IT!!! Let's just say I use to get a Christmas Card and a Bottle of Cheer almost every year from the book

Apparently it's National Fried Chicken Sandwich Day, but I have some buttermilk and that sounds like a plan.

Started out 1-5 and have now won 3 in a row,2 of those on the road
-
The 1-5 start wasn't as bad as their Big Ten media day appearance.

I NEVER take the Hawks when giving more than 2 1/2
they have more 3-7 point wins than anyone
-
Not exactly an easy schedule either
-
The Bruins ran on Iowa and stopped Iowa from running on them. That’s two things that are not easy to accomplish.
-
Iowa had jet lag

See, that’s a stupid fake holiday I can get behind

and no running game and 100yds more passing than run for. When's the last time that happened?
-
Getting going in Richmond Virginia this morning, crashing at my older cousin's who is a big Michigan fan. He says he doesn't want to sit long through today's game Vs Indiana especially if things get ugly. Says we'll instead go to Richmond Vs Marist college basketball game if Michigan starts going off the rails.
-
by all means go off the rails

Wife and will be heading over to Pizza Port Brewing Co in the Jeep today for lunch.
Yesterday got a couple of beautiful pieces of ahi tuna from Wild Fork which is defrosting and will be seared for dinner tonight. That'll be nice.

Iowa has laid an egg in 2 straight road games at Mich St and UCLA. In both games, Iowa's defense did a very bad job of tackling compared to the typical Iowa defense.
This got me wondering what could be the problem other than just being on the road in general. One thing MSU and UCLA have in common is they both play on grass at home.
I have a new theory that Iowa does not play well on the road when they play on a grass field. But I am too lazy to actually prove it. I wonder if other teams have similar problems on grass
-
Smoking it perhaps
-
In conference, no team has won the week after playing Wisconsin.
-
Last great grass prediction, Lee Corso. Picked Florida to beat Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl because it was on grass.

I had to look that one up. Looks like Nebraska beat Florida 62-24 in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl to win the 1995 national championship.

USC is on grass at the Coliseum, all others are artificial.

Buckeyes block a punt, punch it in. Looking fairly janky running the ball.

I'm planning on going to the Arizona Fall League "Fall Stars" All-Star game later after Florida loses.

Bucks put in the second strong defense and tried playing a 3-4, which results in an easy drive for Purdue, but they missed a field goal

Gonna get started late because of shoe nonsense. First store didn’t have what I wanted, found a store I think has what I need. Irritating all around.

Yeah that was interesting. Each successful Purdue play in that drive included a totally blown assignment by a second stringer. I saw 2 by Hicks and 1 by Melton. Not ready for prime time I guess- but this is how they get experience and learn.

shoe shoppin during college football?
must be urgent - golf shoes?
-
It's annoying that Florida and Texas haven't played in 84 years, both have been big-boy programs in my lifetime, and this is the situation when they finally face off.
It feels like my Gators are trying to rely on the noon-game-Vandy-malaise in order to try to hang in it. It's gross.

Running. I have a race next week and my regular shoes are basically starting to fall apart. Plus, I have sports stuff basically the rest of day and weekend, so not a lot of time to get stuff done otherwise

No, no, that's wrong. In order for it to qualify as twelving, the losing team has to exceed a forty point total.

Watching Michigan every week is like watching the freshman team with a terrible coach play the state champ varsity team. From bad coaching to poor execution, it’s a disaster top to bottom. 2nd and 10 and the box is stacked, run it up the middle followed by your qb missing wide open receivers multiple times. Losing is one thing. Being horrid is rough. Especially after watching a couple incredible years.

They've quit. Honestly thats college football now. When you disappoint, guys already have one eye out the door Michigan has been so good recently, they havent had to deal with it, but its the sad reality now.
Theyll flip the roster, and next year will be totally different.

Out of the ones they reviewed for targeting, I thought that was the one most blatantly not targeting. I thought the Orji one was borderline and could have gone either way. This one makes me scratch my head.

How do you not get that right as a coach? The frustration isn’t that this team can’t win, it’s that very basic things aren’t done correctly and this is a perfect example.

Lol. It’s not often I’m happy to take a loss, but there’s a couple fan bases that deserve to experience a good run and Indiana fans are certainly one of them. Really hoping the Hoosiers can shock everyone a pull a conference title this year.

The irony is that Indiana already got to play in the Rose Bowl (stadium) this year. Guessing some Indiana fans already spent their travel budget on that trip this year.
Now if Indiana can keep it going and beat both OSU and Ore, they will get the #1 seed in the CFP and get to play in the actual Rose Bowl game. Ok, I know it's still unlikely but the odds are a 1000 times better now than when the season started.

Hard to believe that Indiana has never won 10 games in a season until now. That’s crazy.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah athletic director Mark Harlan blasted the Big 12 officiating crew following BYU’s 22-21 win over the Utes on Saturday night for controversial calls on the Cougars’ winning drive.
Harlan took the podium shortly before players and coach Kyle Whittingham arrived.
“This game was absolutely stolen from us,” Harlan said. “We were excited about being in the Big 12, but tonight I am not. We won this game. Someone else stole it from us. Very disappointed. I will talk to the commissioner. This was not fair to our team. I’m disgusted by the professionalism of the officiating crew tonight.”
Utah appeared to have stopped BYU twice on fourth down on the final drive. Both times, the play was wiped out by officials.
BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff threw an incomplete pass in the end zone but the play was blown dead a few seconds after the snap because officials said BYU called a timeout before the snap.
Then Junior Tafuna and Karene Reid sacked Retzlaff on the replayed fourth down. Their sack was negated when Utes cornerback Zemaiah Vaughn was called for holding.
BYU earned a fresh set of downs and marched down the field. Retzlaff completed passes to Chase Roberts and Darius Lassiter and then Hinckley Ropati ran 14 yards to help set up Will Ferrin’s winning 44-yard field goal with four seconds left.

Then the clown announcing says a good call by the official against Utah when the camera is too far away to see anything - conclusive or not. UTAH got jobbed, those refs should have worn BYU unis
Sure, but....don't go scoreless in the 2nd half.
I will say the clipping is rarely called, EXCEPT that it was called earlier in the game, on a far less egregious hit. So to not call it there was BS.

The video I tried to link here is about Bruce Hudson's 1974 Dodge Challenger. Bruce went down aboard the Fitz. He was an only child and his parents had to go get his car from the Ogleby lot in Toledo. That was where Bruce parked it before boarding his ship.

Curious, is the Edmund Fitzgerald a thing in the Midwest? Or is it because of the song? It seems to have staying power, there have been lots of shipwrecks throughout the ages, but this one stays in our collective consciousness.

that's why it's a thing in NW Iowa

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the maritime sailors' cathedral
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland

When I was in college, friends of mine would play that at bars and see how long it took them to turn it off

Michigan needs to fire and revamp this entire staff. When you can do basic things correctly this far into the season, it’s time to start from scratch again.
Agree completely.

This may be the new normal. Washington sucks, too.
A program has to peak to win the NC, and you have natural, normal losses/attrition, but now you have extra losses (because you can't pay everyone what they think they're worth). If you don't get lucky filling in those holes, you get really average really quick.
-
I think a playoff team mostly needs to be lucky to win the NC. It helps of course to be very sound, but luck will play a significant role.
Even the best team might have only a 70% chance of winning each game.

I heard that it was the first time that the state of Florida ever went winless for a weekend at the FBS, FCS and NFL levels.

For one thing, the Fitz isn't just another shipwreck, it is the biggest in the Great Lakes.
Another thing is that most of the Great Lakes shipwrecks are a hundred or more years ago. When we think of a shipwreck from 18-something we just think that happened back then. It "feels" different when it is a modern-ish ship.
Thirdly, most of the crewmen killed were from here, chiefly Ohio and Wisconsin.
Finally, the song 🎵 obviously contributes.

Wait.. are you a Hudson guy?

Both.

That isn’t so surprising at the first time. You’re talking about an 0-13 weekend. With a smattering of programs that usually win more than they lose.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
Oof. That's a brutal/visceral line.
This Californian had never heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald until I went to school in Wisconsin (I also didn't listen to Gordon Lightfoot). Then I went to Wisconsin and married a girl with a guitar. So basically doubled down on it.

Matt Rhule announces that Dana Holgorsen will serve as offensive coordinator and play-caller for the rest of the season.

Whatever happened to that girl anyway?

Got out of politics. Sadly, a good move.

I am sorry to hear that of course. She's the kind of person I would vote FOR. There aren't many like that who would make the attempt.
My wife wants me to run for our HOA Board. Nyet.

hah, you might run unopposed!

HOA Board and School Board are the political equivalent of being the long snapper.
Nobody ever says "the team is doing great because every time we need to punt @Cincydawg (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=870) snaps the ball right to the punter." Nope, the only time you hear his name is when he launches one over the punter's head.

Do you need a power trip and want to boss around your neighbors enough to run?
-
As a former punt/FG long snapper (who never F'd up, not once in four high school seasons), I was also recruited by my neighbors to join the HOA board. I was like 'are you F'ing kidding me? so I can get calls/text from people complaining about a barking dog or a car parked on the street or driveway for consecutive days. trash cans out past dark?'
I really like what our HOA dues provides us, neat well kept public spaces, pools, tennis courts etc. Yes, there were some tight regs when we built, but its been a pretty well run outfit during my duration here.

As a former punt/FG long snapper (who never F'd up, not once in four high school seasons),
I played left tackle and maybe got called 2-3 times for holding when I absolutely didn't hold. The only time I blatantly, purposely held a guy as egregiously as possible....not called.
Oh, those zebras.
