I guess someone should bring it up. Penn State kinda broke my spirit for Wisconsin.
This is a trench game for sure.
Wisconsin has been good at protecting the QB, but the QB is prone to happy feet, poor decisions and batted balls. He cannot beat a team on his own.
If Wisconsin can run, they will keep this one in reach. If not, it's over.
The Wisconsin D has been suspect against mobile QB's but otherwise pretty stout.
Home night game in Kinnick is always a bitch.

Iowa 27, Wisconsin 21

Hawks 16
Badgers 13

Iowa's QB depth is suddenly very thin. Cade MacNamara is out with a concussion and can't play.
QB Brendan Sullivan will be starting and probably would have been starting anyway.
3rd stringer Marco Lainez is a little banged up and it's not sure if he can play. Probably could play in an emergency, but not sure how well.
Former 4th stringer James Resar moved to WR and got hurt as a WR, and is out.
That leaves preferred walk on Jackson Stratton, who played some QB at Col St and then transferred to Iowa, as the only healthy backup QB available. After that, there are some Iowa players that played some QB in high school.

One is retired, although rumors are the Lions kicked the tires when Hutchinson got hurt
-
Two are retired, but one of them was a fullback. 3 NFL Watts. Is that a record for brothers in the NFL?

There were 3 Fullers. Corey, Kendall and Kyle

Iowa's defense is typically stingy, but appears stronger against the run than against the pass. In its losses, Iowa has given up 200+ yards passing (as well as a couple of its wins, including Washington and Minnesota). Curiously, Ohio State is on the low end of that (barely clearing 200), but both Iowa State and Michigan State put up 250+ yards of passing. Does Locke have it in him?
Michigan State and Ohio State also ran effectively against Iowa, both clearing 200 yards, both by committee. In Iowa's other loss, to Iowa State, they stoned the running game (and in their wins). Iowa imploded with three second-half turnovers against OSU, but that wasn't an issue with MSU (1 int, but the MSU loss wasn't close to a 1-score game). Iowa's loss to Iowa State included two INTs, but McNamara won't play against the Badgers, so who knows what to expect in the passing game. With a backup quarterback, and an opposing team that doesn't grind the clock, if I'm Iowa, I want to stuff the ball down Wisconsin's throat and win TOP. We all know that late in the game Wisconsin's defense is often gassed--if Iowa can keep pounding away at it, that seems like a recipe for an Iowa win.
Iowa also causes turnovers, including interceptions--even in the games they lose. Can Locke limit himself to one, not back-breaking, interception? If so, and he can get Pauling open in the slot, he's certainly capable of putting up yards on the Iowa defense. But he's also perfectly capable of throwing 4 picks in a game. We'll see. But to be able to get the running game going, Wisconsin will have to be able to hurt Iowa through the air.
It will be a risk/reward kind of game. If Locke limits his mistakes, the Badgers should have a good shot at this, but Wisconsin can't win this game by handing the ball to Walker and Yacamelli--nor is their team designed to do that really against any team, but especially against the Hawkeyes.
So I see Iowa turning to the same old Big Ten playbook--keep the ball in front of it, and grind away at Wisconsin; try to win a classic 20 to 13-ish brawl. For the Badgers, I respectfully disagree with Badge: they have to be able to open the field with the passing game, but we all know the risk that comes with. I don't see Locke getting out of this game without an INT, but if he can do what other winning QBs have done against Iowa: 250+ yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT, I can see Wisconsin putting up enough points to get by an Iowa squad that won't likely light up the scoreboard...unless Locke is throwing them the ball.
I think the Badgers need at least 24 to win this one. If they get to 28, they will win. It will all depend on how many picks Locke throws.
-
I can see 2-3 picks for Locke in this game, and it gets out of hand.
He, and his play caller, have the no-confidence vote from me.
They can prove me wrong, and I'll admit I was.
-
As should be obvious from what I wrote there, I can absolutely see Locke imploding, but I'm not convinced it will necessarily happen. As I often say when discussing statistics: if it does happen, it is an expected outcome (if not the only expected outcome).

College happens all the time. MSU has had 3 sets of 3 siblings in recent memory, just off the top of my head (Panisiuk, Allen, Dowell)
Fullers and Watts are the only to have 3 make the NFL off the top of my head. Granted I think Dowell could still happen, the third just got signed to a practice squad. Granted all 3 would be reserve types, while 2 of the 3 Watts are HOFers.

The Hilgenbergs were close. 3 bothers started at Iowa and 2 (Jay and Joel) played in the NFL. Also their uncle Wally Hilgenberg was an NFL hall of famer, and their dad Jerry would have gone to the NFL but he was drafted into the military instead.

I did a large subdivision in Wisconsin for Jay Hilgenberg's investment group. Nice guy. Paid his bills.

I effin hate this game.

that's OK, cause the Hawks don't care much for the Badgers either

Not me. IMO, this is the measuring stick for the Badgers' season. "We" should always beat Minnesota--that game frustrates me. Iowa is almost always a good test--and appropriately so. Would I love to see the Badgers playing for national titles and top 5 rankings like OSU and Michigan? Sure. But Iowa/Wisconsin is just such a classic Badger game. I love it. (And I'll be frustrated if Locke starts sparying INTs all over the place.)

Far too often, I have watched Iowa turn the Wisconsin offense into the equivalent of watching old people screw. And then the badger defense busts along some seam and I will wins with a dumb jagged number like 11 or 18. Bleh.

If it helps your peace of mind, Iowa's pass defense this year is not that great.

No peace of mind until the final whistle, or I guess until Wisconsin has some kind of comfortable lead late.

We got enough rain for me to put on my poncho, but there much rain during the game. It took 30 minutes to get to my car after the game. About 20-minutes after getting into my car, it down-poured.
One of my classmates from FSU law school came up to the game from Pensacola. We had a nice tailgate with about a dozen or more people and some fans from Badger Land. My classmate has distant relatives in Iowa. He grew up in Ohio. For 40 years he told me he would go to a game with me in Iowa City, but didn't. He had season tickets at FSU when we were in law school, so he has been to D-1 football games.
After the game last night, he said, this (Kinnick Stadium) is the loudest stadium he had been in since his mom (an Iowa grad) took him to an Iowa game when he was a kid in the early 1960s in Columbus, Ohio. (Ouch, that didn't go well).
During this trip, he has been in constant contact with his wife, but hadn't told her yet what he told me this morning at our B & B. "My wife is going to kill me when I get home, and I tell her, I am coming back for a game next year."
We had a great time.

So glad it worked out great for you. They made the rain look a lot worse on TV, I guess.

A nice thing about CFB is how your team could finish say 8-5 and if you beat your main rivals it would be considered a pretty good season.
If you finish 9-4 buy lose to your main rivals, ....

Maybe that's why Iowa plays 4 trophy games every year (and usually finishes 8-5 or 9-4).
-
I recall years where the Dawgs finished 10-3 but lost to Tenn/Florida/Auburn, and often that meant we were getting a new coach. I can also recall some 9-4 kind of years where the team upset say Tennessee and the year was considered pretty good.
Maybe pro fans think the same way, I dunno.
-
Augh. This game was just brutal to watch. For a Badger fan.
-
Iowa looked like the [good] Bielema and [good] Chryst era Badgers: tough defense, and a dominating running game. Reminded me of the Bielema-era game against Michigan where the Badgers didn't throw the ball in the second half, and couldn't be stopped.
Iowa was Iowa: that is who they always are.
Wisconsin is a team without an identity. I haven't given up on the idea of this offense, but the way it's executed right now, the Badgers won't be able to hang with tough teams. That can't cut it. Consistent three-and-outs (and turnovers) puts the defense in an impoosible situation. Also, the out route along the line of scrimmage is a terrible play. If you want to run a screen there, run a screen, but throwing the ball to the back shoulder of a receiver running parralel to the line of scrimmage is a hard way to pick up yards. I've seen that play too many times, and I've yet to see it work when it matters.

Wisconsin is a team without an identity.
A very articulate observation of what we all see. Wisconsin gave up their old identity, but didn't find a new one.
Wouldn't you love to hear a Barry Alvarez interview on this topic?
-
Yes, would love to hear from Barry--but he's too much of a pro to really say what he thinks. I was surprised he weighed in even on the 4th and 1 call against USC.
Either way, this hire is McIntosh's. I agreed at the time with his decision--but making the right decision doesn't mean you get the right result. If Fickell doesn't work out, McIntosh may also not work out.
