Title: Curt Cignetti Eats Corn For Breakfast Instead of Eggs (SOC Week 8)
Post by: MaximumSam on October 18, 2024, 06:45:52 PM
After a bit of cool weather, we are back to feeling good in Columbus. My wife took the kids to Virginia for the weekend, both to take advantage of her folk's timeshare and to visit a King's Dominion theme park down there. She's been regularly going to Cedar Point or King's Island, and wanted to see how broadly she could stretch those season passes, so Virginia it is.

But I'm in Columbus, sitting in my sun room, chilling with the dogs. It's cool enough that I can sit out here with a blanket, but warm enough that a beer (Bell's Red IPA) tastes really good. God I love fall in Ohio.

My gambling for the weekend has not started off well. Although I’m kind of happy that I was wrong about Florida State beating Duke.

Coffee's on,looking at sunnyside eggs and toasted pumpernickel - with a deli dill pickle on the side of course. Got a whole staircase to paint already sanded, washed, spackled gonna tape off - that's a pain in the posterior. But got 3coats primered and painted on the ceiling out of the way. Taping off the risers & steps both sides up/down will be irksome but I'll be listening to CFB on the radio - a true solace 😎

Got roped into helping someone move (too old for this shit). When it became clear that the plan was not as solidified as I would hope, Laid down a hard line that I wanted to be personally done in time to swing out to Badger bar for the game.

Priorities.

Principally don’t do it and I haven’t got there yet. But this particular friend is optimistically unreasonable at points and I think deeply hard up for cash after buying a first home.

Think of it as aerobics carrying items up/down staircases. Ya years ago a bunch of pubsters would get together and help others move. This one couple had like 7-8 months to prep/pack so when the 3 pick ups pulled in they'd be set to go.Even one guy brought his truck w/lift gate for appliances.Pull in and they hadn't done shit.Well they got an ear full and we moved all the big items in 3 hrs. All the small things were left to them we could have took had they been ready

My wife and I painted our basement this past spring.

While I could tolerate the painting part, it was all the other stuff that was awful. In particular, removing wallpaper from an alcove. Blech.

Gophers are off this week. First non football weekend since mid August. Some of the weekend will be spent puppy-proofing the house. But it's a gorgeous weekend here in MSP, so we'll be enjoying that.

they have your internet line tapped

The Communications Assistance for law Enforcement Act (CALEA) is a statute enacted by Congress in 1994 to require that telecommunications carriers and manufacturers of telecommunications equipment design their equipment, facilities, and services to ensure that they have the necessary surveillance capabilities to comply with legal requests for information. CALEA is intended to preserve the ability of law enforcement agencies to conduct electronic surveillance while protecting the privacy of information outside the scope of the investigation. In 2005, the Commission extended coverage of CALEA to include facilities-based broadband Internet access providers and providers of interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service.

Moving here was very difficult for us, physically.  So many boxes for one thing.  I rented a UHaul truck for my "delicates" (wine, stereo gear, etc.).  Then we paid a mover to come later with the heavy stuff, they were good.  I didn't know where we'd put all the boxes of "stuff".  My wife about killed herself unpacking, at one point I insisted we go for a walk, which turned out to be a very good idea.

Duke finally beat FSU, I watched parts and thought FSU would have won without turnovers and poor QB play.  They had three TOs in three plays in the first half. So, Duke is 6-1 and a team about as good it appeared is 1-6.

FSU was #10 preseason, which is a major whiff, the rest of the top ten are doing anywhere from "OK" to really good.  Alabama and Ole Miss were 8 and 9.

FSU is 1-6...

Wisconsin under Fickell has beaten out FSU for a few recruits now. Their poor performance can only help more.

I'd like to see Fickell flip RB Byron Louis, out of American Heritage in Broward County. UW finished #2 to FSU in that one.

Same here, I love sausage and jalapenos together on a pizza.  The family doesn't, so whenever they're not around, that's what I get!

Was 59 degrees when I went for my 3-mile run around the track this morning. Felt amazing.  Now we wait for womenfolk. Porsche Carrera Cup qualifying starts in 10 minutes so I'll probably just walk on in to the circuit without them.

Last night my son was at the HS homecoming football game and my daughter had dance at 7 PM, so we fed the two younger kids early (Costco rotisserie chicken and roasted asparagus). We were going to cook some scallops for the two of us after she got home but Costco had none, but they had some beautiful swordfish. So it was a marinated/grilled swordfish and roasted asparagus for us last night. Wasn't a problem to miss any of the football game that was on Fox last night... Goes to show you what a team earning that sweet Nike money does against someone without a competitive budget.

Tonight we're doing carne asada burritos and my MIL's crema rice recipe. Good stuff.

For tomorrow we're trying Michael Symon's pastitsio recipe for the first time.

Waking up in Tucson. Once we get enough of the group together we’ll head over to campus to visit a few tailgates on the University of Arizona campus. Today’s game is sold out thanks to 1) Homecoming and 2) Prime. Kickoff 1PM.

To start homecoming weekend my brother and I attended yesterday’s Engineer’s Alumni Breakfast:

Moving was less painful and delay plagued than expected. And I made a smart call to tell One person who has extremely excellent U-Haul packing skills that they wouldn’t be too late when they were delayed and arriving.

Anyway, we are bearing down on the bar and hoping that the alumni group actually shows up today.

That's good. Helping someone move when they haven't bothered to pack yet is among the more rage inducing activities in existence

Any opinions on the leather-helmet, Red Grange uniforms for Illinois today?
Think it was their art dept but they came up with Indian Chief in full head dress incorporating it around the front of the helmet. Far and away the best/neatist design I'd ever seen, with players face where the chics is at

You know, I actually don't hate this.

It's not that I think it looks good. I think it's terrible. But I think it's appropriate for the occasion and even though I don't like it stylistically, I actually like that they did it.

USCe is probably a decent team.  They nearly beat Alabama on the road.  Ole Miss torched them, which happens.  They lost by 3 to LSU.  So 2 of their 3 losses look pretty decent for a middlin kind of team.  The Sooners may be having a one loss turn into two.

S Carolina has the ultra rare 11-point quarter going in the 2nd.

Either a 2 point conversion with a big lead, or there was a safety involved.

Seeing Indiana having success, sucks. Especially in a year in which Purdue, well, sucks.

At this point the only thing that can salvage Purdue's season is beating Indiana H2H. But per @medinabuckeye1 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1547) I can't even rest on the idea that if Indiana is 11-0 at that point, it would be a true Spoilermaker event, because in a 12-team CFP they'd still be comfortably in.

This season officially sucks.

I think every non helmet school needs to come to terms with the fact that this is all going to be extremely year to year.  Program building is dead.  Indiana did a better job assembling a roster this year than Nebraska.  Might flip next year.  I don't read into Indiana's rebuild being ahead of Nebraska's.  Indiana also paid for a 6th year QB who they get for one season.  Nebraska paid for an 18 year old who looked like he was seeing ghosts today, but is only going to get better.

Kinda feel like this is one of those games that based on talent differential will favor Michigan as we get into the second half... If I'm Illinois, I'm NOT feeling good about going into halftime only up 6, especially since Michigan starts the 2nd half with the ball.

Rest of the season is gonna be interesting. I'll have to see when the next numbers come out, but as of now, they project to be an underdog by between 5 and 10 for the next four. And the two closer ones are at Iowa and Neb. If they can't win those, a LOT of pressure on that Minnesota game.

Being forced to play young talent has its lows, but they also flash their talent and those highs are nice.

Pick-6 by the Gators, up 48-20.   This may be our last win for about a month and a half, so I'm savoring it.

So is Billy Napier keeping his job?

And for the record, I think he's a good coach, and should.  But also, he's doing it in a game where his QB is 7-14 for 259 yards, which is some SNES numbers

He's Cam Newton Jr.  Just flicks the football like a fastball effortlessly.  His easy mobility gives him time for WRs to get open downfield.  Hence the SNES numbers tonight.

He has a lot to learn, and you can scheme against him, as our next 4 opponents will.  But his talent is remarkable.

I woke up on the couch last nite with UT/UGA going at it and heard Austin was getting real weird - like fans showering the field with debris weird.Evidently the refs reversed a call after walking it off - I've never seen or heard off a penalty announced and marked off then reversed :o

The first call was a bad call, I think, maybe it could have been called on both players, so I agree they got it right, it was just the process that was wrong in my view.

At least it didn't change the outcome.

The Dawgs are finally getting a bit healthier and have an off week, but two players were called for targetting in the second half.

Wow what a truly awful performance from Texas.

Congrats to CD and the Bulldogs, that was just an ass-whipping.  I believed Georgia could win the game but I thought it would be a lot closer.

The refs finally got the call right and it shouldn't have required a 5-minute conversation.  That was pitiful and embarrassing for them, but I respect them for having the balls to admit their mistake and correct it.

I was very surprised to see UGA get pressure on the Texas QB to that extent.  Then UGA threw 3 INTS which usually means you lose, but Texas had one and a rough fumble.

It was a very unexpected game for me.

I watched the Tenn-Bama game where Tenn failed to score, AGAIN, in the first half, and still win.

Ryan McGee, who works for ESPN, talks about his dad, who was an SEC official, saying that officiating is getting consistently worse, because they are becoming more and more reliant on knowing replay will baul them out on wrong calls.

I also thonk the speed of the game, and the larger space its played in, makes it way tougher

They ( officials) are becoming such a big part of the game.   They are slowing it down so much.

They are so inconsistent on what targeting is and what Pass Interference is.

Also- it seems like the get the video replays wrong a LOT.

No they did not. Don't get me wrong, it was not dpi and had it not been called, I would have continued cussing Beck and no big deal. However they allowed fans trashing the field to get a call overturned which was unreviewable after it was announced and walked off. This is a terrible precedent and there was not even a penalty on Texas for unsportsmanlike conduct.  Just a terrible decision even if the call was the correct one imo.

Maryland 29-28 USC (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap - ESPN (https://www.espn.com/college-football/recap/_/gameId/401628521)

The Trojans (3-4, 1-4 Big Ten) have lost their four games by a combined 14 points — all after being ahead (https://apnews.com/article/usc-minnesota-score-f34d73364d05d8703b1b666527b40ab7) in the second half. This time, they were up 28-14 before collapsing in excruciating fashion.

My guess is USC is a "pretty good team" yet.  The could win out from here.  Only ND is ranked and they play in LA.  So, they could end up 7-5 or 8-4 with a what might have been kind of season.  A few breaks and they'd be 6-1 or better... but they aren't.

I think we also just see more of it. Back in the day you had like three grainy angles and no ability to replay. Now we have more cameras, HD, different feeds, better broadcasts, better slo-mo. So plays that used to be missed but the cameras missed are now right in our face.

Penalties can't be assessed against the team, based on crowd behavior.  As stated above, they could assess a penalty on the team, based on the band.  But this was the student section not the band.

I suppose they could have tried to figure out a way to call delay of game, but it was actually Kirby Smart that stopped play on the field when he ran out to complain about a bottle being thrown.

They stop the game and wait for the fans to be quiet.  As a fan who likes watching actual football, I imagine I'd eventually tell my neighbors to stop ringing the cowbells.  And if they didn't comply, I'd eventually shove those cowbells down their throats.

I think in college, they make bands quiet down for that.

Yeah I know for sure that the Longhorn band stops playing as the QB walks up to the LOS.

My kids' high school band director is a huge football fan, so he knows exactly when the band should, and shouldn't, be playing.  It just seems to be accepted now, that the opposing band is going to be blasting throughout your QB call and snap sequence.  I still think it's poor sportsmanship but everyone does it.

Hate that but as long as it's not Boomer Sooner,Rocky Top, Hang on Sloopy or repeatedly

You failed to mention USC's band. Very annoying.

had no idea that was happening
ncaa should step in on that one
NCAA?  It's high school bands that are doing it, not college bands.  Like I said, LHB stops playing as the opposing QB walks up to the LOS.  So do opposing college bands, near as I can remember.

yup, I think the band or canned noise in the stadium should stop when the play clock starts
I'm not so sure on the play clock, but certainly as the opposing QB walks up to the LOS and starts to make his calls.

If you did it on the play clock, you'd never hear any band at all.
