Well, the Big question emerging seems to be how much should a 2+ time zone difference be taken into account when doing Power Rankings. A question I am struggling with.
1. Oregon - I can't make up my mind if a 1-point victory at home against OSU is enough to make Ore #1. I really consider Ore & OSU tied at this point and they really should play again on a neutral field. For now, I am putting Oregon #1 because they actually won,
2. Ohio St - I am still debating with myself if OSU's 1-pt loss on the road to Ore should be enough to keep OSU #1. I just can't decide.
3. Penn St - There is growing evidence that traveling 2+ time zones for a game is really, really hard. I give PSU credit for a gutsy comeback and OT win on the road @USC.
4. Indiana - Indiana's blowout win @UCLA earlier in year is starting to look more impressive in hindsight given how every team seems to be struggling on the road.
5. Iowa - Iowa is good enough to dominate Minn and Wash. Bad enough to be dominated by OSU. Kaleb Johnson is looking like an All-American RB as long as he doesn't play against OSU.
6. Illinois - Almost blew it in OT against awful Purdue team, but some weeks you just gotta survive
7. Nebraska - only loss so far was in OT at home against ILL
8. Wisconsin - Wisc makes a big jump in my rankings after big blowout win @Rutgers.
9. Rutgers - may not be as good as I first thought.
10. Washington - Wash seems to be 2 totally different teams when playing at home and on the road. Hard team to rank.
11. Michigan - still debating how much the loss @Wash should count against Mich
12. Minnesota - dominated by Iowa, close loss to Mich, then back to back wins against USC and @UCLA. Minn seems to be getting better.
13. USC - like Wash, USC is a hard team to rank because they play so much better at home. But USC seems to have trouble playing complete games.
14. NW - dominated MD on the road.
15. Mich St - MSU barely beat MD and then lost to Ore and OSU.
16. MD - I have this theory that Mike Locksley is the worst head coach in Big Ten and so far this season, he seems to be living down to that expectation.
17. UCLA - showed life at home almost pulling off upset against Minn.
18. Purdue - After looking awful all year, Purdue almost pulls off big comeback win, just coming up short in OT against ILL.
-
- Oregon: Won a great game
- OSU: Defense just wasn't it, also lost their left tackle
- PSU: Escaped USC, has a star at tight end
- Indiana: Won the bye
- Iowa: Looked like a complete team
- USC: This is a very difficult team to rank - they are three hairs from being undefeated
- Illinois: Far from inspiring
- Washington: Welcome to Kinnick
- Michigan: BYE
- Nebraska: BYE
- Minnesota: Also uninspiring
- Wisconsin: Coming to life?
- Rutgers: Not their finest effort
- Northwestern: Moving them out of the basement
- MSU: BYE
- Maryland: Yuck
- UCLA: No
- Purdue: Hey, competitive!

1) Ohio State: I know this is controversial, but I think we’re starting to see the problem we all expected with an athletic conference that spans four time zones.
2) Penn State: same. Very high quality road win against a good team.
3) Oregon: good argument that I have Oregon two spots too low. Going to Michigan will be hard. Going to Wisconsin in mid-November may also be tough
4) Michigan, but it’s not obvious. The traveling in this conference is silly.
5) Iowa: someone has to go here, and the Hawkeyes took care of business against the Huskies.
6) USC: probably.
7) Washington: Iowa is tough at Kinnick, but that wasn’t a great showing.
8) Nebraska: won the bye.
9) Illinois: not a good showing against Purdue, but Illinois won.
10) Minnesota: won 1500 miles from home. That’s not nothing.
11) Wisconsin: trending in the right direction.
12) but but but what about Indiana!?! PROVE IT. I'm guessing Indiana finsishes 2-4. Kudos if it does, and finishes 8-4, but that's a different 8-4 than the team I put ahead of it. Same as I said last week before the bye, but moved up because Rutgers moved down.
13) Rutgers: welcome back to reality.
Bringing up the rear:
14) Sparty: no game, no change.
15) Northwestern: solid looking win.
16) UCLA: made it tough on a decent Goopher squad.
17) Maryland: not a good showing against Northwestern.
18) Purdon't. Still losing, even if it was close.

Tough for things to really shake out in a bloated 18 team conference where half the teams don't play one another, but some results will occur, one way or another, I suppose.

yup, like last season or the season before, we will be left wondering if the # 3 team was better than the #4 team or if the #5 team was better than the #7 team

Some thoughts on this week's upcoming games.
There seems to be consensus with Oregon near the top and Purdue near the bottom of the power rankings. This sets up the classic trap game for Oregon, which has to travel cross-country to Purdue on Friday night. But I am afraid Purdue is so bad this year, they probably used their best effort last week in the OT loss to Illinois. Oregon probably wins in a blow out.
There does not seem to be much faith in Indiana on this board, which I admit is my default instinct as well, but so far the Hoosiers are not just winning, but dominating their opponents. That's what makes it's next game against Nebraska so interesting. Is Indiana for real? This could be Indiana's toughest test until they play at OSU on Nov 23.
Mich @ILL is another interesting game which will put the transitive property to the test. ILL beat Neb, Neb beat Rut, Rut beat Wash, Wash beat Mich. So ILL should beat Mich, right?
A lot of folks have Iowa ranked higher and MSU lower in the power rankings, but still I don't know if Iowa is that much better than MSU. Probably will be a close game in East Lansing on Sat that could go either way.

Purdue is going to get steamrolled by Oregon. Don't overthink this.
Yeah, they had some fight in them against Illinois. But that's because they aren't completely out-talented by Illinois. Here are the 247 composite whole roster rankings of both teams:

Now, I don't put a TON of stock into this... I doubt Purdue is actually out-talenting Illinois by that much. There is always a lot of noise in these rankings.
But... Here's Oregon:

Oregon's second stringers could beat us handily. Their first team will decimate us. It's going to be ugly.

Last week in parentheses...
- PENN STATE (2) - what travel issues?
- OHIO STATE (1) - no shame in a 2 point road loss
- OREGON (3) - same reason I kept Michigan and Minnesota behind USC
- INDIANA (4) - bye week
- IOWA (11) - probably the most Iowa win ever
- WISCONSIN (12) - seems like they were playing both the wrong QB and the wrong RB
- ILLINOIS (5) - have to end your opponent when you have a chance
- NEBRASKA (6) - bye week
- WASHINGTON (7) - second time they outplayed their opponent in a loss
- USC (8) - for a half it seemed like they could play defense
- MICHIGAN (9) - bye week
- RUTGERS (10) - big yikes
- MINNESOTA (13) - UCLA appears to be the one cross country trip that is fine
- MICHIGAN STATE (14) - bye week
- NORTHWESTERN (16) - offense starting to find its footing
- MARYLAND (15) - no way Locksley survives this season
- UCLA (17) - if Foster wasn't a Bruin legend, he might be one and done
- PURDUE (18) - team may have some fight left in them

Not really. Take a look at the Q4 scoring.

Indiana looks very close to being a CFP playoff team based on the new Massey ratings. In fact, they may be in now as the #11 seed.

Apparently they have the 11th best odds. They are both better than expected, and have an insanely easy schedule. OSU is likely the only game they aren't favored in

In a league where you now only play half the teams, I sort of feel like I have to root for the teams MSU plays. So...

6)The Illini won by a point over the Boilers at home have the Weasels coming in
7)Badgers impressive win over NJ State,Luke may have turned a corner
8)Iowa,coming off a solid thrashing of the Huskies pay a visit to the Spartans
9)AA Weasels, a 3:30 contest with the Berts in Champaigne, good double header paired with Hoosiers/'Skers @ Noon
10)Rutgers and Schiano hanging on by one game as the Huskies have dropped 3 and appear to be fading
No more typing - it's the BIG - like they say in Canada - come on up

Illinois didn't lose.

My bad badge that was why I kept them there I was thinking of another game thanks.Gonna have to try harder hope they up end the M tomorrow

Illinois didn't lose.
Yes, Illinois has 2 wins in OT against Neb and Purdue, which makes them hard to rank in the Power Rankings. Are the Illini just lucky or do they deserve some credit for pulling out close wins at the end of games? Nebraska seems to have the opposite problem, losing a lot more close games than they should.

Matt McMaster has released his latest set of Big Ten Football Power Rankings.
18. UCLA (1-5, 0-3 Big Ten) [Last Week: 17]
17. Maryland (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) [Last Week: 14]
16. Purdue (1-5, 0-3 Big Ten) [Last Week: 18]
This is the Luke Fickell team we expected to see in Wisconsin when he got hired last season. Brayden Locke perfectly executed Phil Longo’s offense, slinging the pigskin around the yard, while the defense was a stalwart to Rutgers's dimensional offense. The last two weeks, we’ve seen an impressive turnaround for Wisconsin.
8. Iowa (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) [Last Week: 12]
Hot Take: The Hawkeye's win over Washington was the most impressive W of the week. It's even more impressive than Oregon’s win over Ohio State. We knew that game was going to be a dogfight. I don’t think anyone expected Iowa to bulldoze the Huskies the way they did, especially after Michigan failed to do so against them. Iowa imposed their will for 60 minutes and proved why you should never doubt Kirk Ferentz.
7. Minnesota (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) [Last Week: 8]
I thought Minnesota was going to lose to the Bruins. They just had an emotional upset at home and then had to go on the road to California to take on a team going through a difficult transition year. On paper, this game should have been a blowout, but I give them a ton of credit for not falling into the trap. I am impressed with how PJ Fleck has been able to turn this ship around after a shaky start to the season.
6. Indiana (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) [Last Week: 6]
They enjoyed a bye week preparing for a game that will firmly put them in or out of the College Football Playoff conversation.
5. Nebraska (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) [Last Week: 5]
See Indiana.
4. Illinois (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) [Last Week: 4]
This was the most challenging decision I made in these rankings. I hate punishing teams for winning, but there is no reason why the No. 23-ranked Illini should play into overtime against Purdue. I’ve called Purdue the worst Power 4 team in the country for the last three weeks, and the Illini nearly blew a 24-point lead. They stepped up when needed to and got the win, but it’s difficult not to be concerned about this squad after their abysmal second-half performance.
3. Penn State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) [Last Week: 2]
Despite nearly being beaten by an unranked team, the Nittany Lions stay in the top three. Yes, USC had two losses coming into this contest, but as I said in my Big Ten Pick'em article, this was a trap game. I was impressed with their fight throughout the game, and Drew Allar proved that when his team's back is against the wall, he can lead them to victory.
2. OSU (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) [Last Week: 1]
Once again, it was an incredible game between undisputedly two of the best teams in the country. But once again, Ohio State failed to win a big game due to a high-leverage quarterback blunder.
1. Oregon (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) [Last Week: 3]

1. Oregon (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) [Last Week: 3]
Looks like you missed #9-#15. I assume Wisc was #9.
-
usually copy & paste works well
16. Purdue (1-5, 0-3 Big Ten) [Last Week: 18]
Hell of a fight from the Boilermakers. They were one play away from one of the season's biggest upsets. Unfortunately for Ryan Walters’ squad, this will probably be the highlight of their season.
15. Michigan State (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) [Last Week: 15]
Bye Week.
14. Northwestern (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) [Last Week: 16]
How bout them Cats?? In last week's pick-em article, I said that if Northwestern’s defense can get back to playing at the level we saw earlier the year and Jack Lausch could build up from his performance against Indiana, this team could surprise people. That’s what exactly happened in the team's victory against Maryland. As a 10-point underdog, the Cats defeated the Terrapins by 27! It was an incredibly competitive game until a 20-point fourth quarter sparked by a defensive touchdown closed the game for NU.
13. Rutgers (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) [Last Week: 10]
What a difference two weeks can make. Rutgers went from being the undefeated surprise story of college football to being down in the dumps after their embarrassing 42-7 loss to Wisconsin. The defense didn’t play with any of the physicality and toughness we are accustomed to seeing from them, leaving their offense high and dry.
12. Washington (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) [Last Week: 9]
The Huskies are lucky that there were more embarrassing losses from the rest of the league or they would be farther down this list. This is the type of loss that could either build character or wreck a season. It’ll be interesting to see how Jedd Fisch’s group will respond.
11. USC (3-3, 1-3, Big Ten) Last Week: 7]
There is only one word to describe this season for USC: Painful. They legitimately are three plays away from being undefeated and on the fast track to the CFP. Instead, they’re 3-3, and Lincoln Riley’s job security is beginning to be questioned. There’s been no better indicator that football is a game of inches than what’s been going on at USC.
10. Michigan (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) [Last Week: 11]
Bad bye week for the Wolverines as their loss to Washington looks much worse. Only the grace of God does Michigan remain ranked in the polls, but that love doesn't extend here. The Wolverines are still a bottom half of the Big Ten team.
9. Wisconsin (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) [Last Week: 13]
