Title: Foie Gras Comes To The Big Ten (SOC Week 7)
Post by: MaximumSam on October 11, 2024, 07:01:37 PM
It's been a long day. I had to wake up at 3:30 this morning to drive two hours to pick up my dad so I could take him to a surgery another hour away. Then sit around for a few hours, then return him home, then come back home and get my kids to taekwondo belt testing. Brown belts Kiai! But finally home, and one beer deep, and a few slices of pizza in, and the weekend is starting to feel right again. Go Bucks.

My brain thinks it's 12:23 PM right now and it's 4:23 PM. Gonna be a rough weekend getting through jet lag.

Gonna get a beer deep shortly though.

I have no idea what is happening today. My wife mentioned something about the kids going somewhere and us having a date night. But clearly she didn't look at the football schedule when she planned that. I hope she knows OSU football will be the third wheel.

Power here.  No internet or cable.  😩
They just put in fiber here about 6 months ago, so there was nothing to repair on that. It's all underground but requires power at the head ends. Internet came on at the same time power came on.

Got to watch CFB last night!

Do you have rabbit ears or something else to catch network TV? Bucks are on NBC.

Those head ends should have generators and batteries
landline phone companies are required to provide (5) 9's of service
supposed to operate 99.999% of the time

That doesn't allow for lack of service during a power outage

That would be nice but flooding and saltwater don't mix well with those things.

around here, they're not allowed to be placed in a flood plain

I almost lost one to a flood.  Water came to within a foot of the floor.

the 500 gallon propane tank would have floated away and the generator would have been wet before the batteries and equipment

batteries and equipment a few feet above the floor mounted in racks

I looked into a Generac in Cincy that ran off natural gas (since we had it).  That was a pretty slick deal, not cheap.

I presume one needs to change the oil on these things on some schedule, etc.  How much maintenance do they require?  Does Generac provide that service?

I will change the oil next week. I need to get some 5W-30 synthetic.

Generac provides yearly maintenance services only.

They just replaced our Diesel generator with a new one, the old one was 35 years old and nobody had parts for it.  It runs about once a week even if power is on, I presume scheduled,  I should ask our guy how often the oil gets changed.  It makes a fair bit of noise and it's right below us.

UGA hosts Miss State today as a 30+ point favorite, which is pretty unusual for a conference game other than with Vandy, who never beats anybody.

Next weeks opponent looks to be more competent.

semi annual maintenance  - yearly oil change
yes, we had weekly scheduled exercise, run for 15 minutes - not under load
tested under load semi annually
not much maintenance - don't run many hours

I just finished creating 120 teams for an order.  Still need to produce them.
Working on a 60 team order, because the guy keeps asking when it'll be done.
Missed out on 4 hours of planning out 2nd quarter Science and Social Studies when I took leave, so I have to do that.
That's the work that keeps a roof over my head, so it's the priority.  Need to plan for the coming week, as well.
Laundry.
Oh, and watch Florida try to find some way to avoid getting embarrassed @ Rocky Top.
.
Need more hours in the day.

First Saturday since August 24 that I haven't been down at either campus or the State Fair for football. Hard to believe that there are only two more home games this season. Feels odd to not go down there this morning.

We're going to meet our puppy for the first time later today.

Watching Iowa Washington, and this is a classic grinder game.

If my math is correct, this is only the 5th possession of the game. Two Wash and the Iowa scoring drive were both over 7.5 minutes.

And as I wrote this, Iowa just picked up a fumble in the red zone.

Had a generator back in Ohio. Never even though about getting one out here. There aren't many changes for a major power outage out here.  Haven't had an outage even localized in my 13 years here.

Dead wrong in picking Rutgers to control this game Vs Wisconsin. Rather, the Badgers have impressively dominated out of the gates, on the road in what I expected to be a more difficult setting.

Good early signs for Longo, who opened the game on the same page as his QB; Locke was very in tune to start. The Badger's defense stifling Rutgers offense for only 120 yds. Wisconsin up 14-0 at the half, with the 2nd quarter gameplay evening out into a standoff.

If you're Rutgers, what a dud. You're at home, dropping how many passes on every possession(?), playing like you're still in bed in front of your fans who equally sound asleep. The Noon EST kickoff excuse is meant for the West Coast schools.

Badgers D in control, but the Badgers offense has left a lot of points on the field. Two-score game is easily within reach for Rutgers.

Strategy question:  you score a TD to go up 7 with 2 min left in the game.  The other team has no timeouts.

Don't you go for 2?  You can put the game out of reach (2 scores).  You have to try that, right?
In the unlikely event the other team does score a TD, they're very likely to tie it up with an XP.

Put the game out of reach with a 2-pt conversion.

Absolutely yes, go for two. Going from 6 to 8 points with the two point play makes no difference, but going from 7 to 9 is a huge difference. It means the other team has to go the length of the field twice. Low risk, high reward.

The Gophers played a game vs Illinois one year, and this exact situation came up. There were many loud, passionate defenders of kicking the PAT.

In this playoff format- it’s pretty wide open.  It’s like the NFL- who gets hot at the right time.

and don’t overlook Oregon or Penn State or Georgia.

Lastly- don’t put Ohio State in the same category with Texas.  They havnt proven much.

Granted Penn State late’s interception of Miller Moss will overshadow this - but anybody else catch just how abysmal Riley’s clock management was? Tied 30-30 with 1:20 left, SC controlling ball near midfield, and through two plays Riley allows the clock to tick all the way to :14. And gave SC almost no chance to finish a late scoring drive.

Im very confused about clock rules.  Feels like you should just play with 20 guys on the field if there are 10ish seconds left, get the stop, and give up 5 yards and all the time that runs off.  Why dont they reset the clock back to the start of the play?  Put your whole roster on the field and give uo the 5 yards and all the time

The moment someone did that, they'd make a new rule.  Since there is an existing 10-second runoff to prevent the offense from abusing the rules, they could just make a 10-second addition to prevent defenses from doing the same.

That, and the titanic decrease in INTs thrown (per pass attempt), due in large part to the spread, which is originally from Bill Walsh's west-coast offense.

Creating all these teams for Whoa Nellie has opened my eyes to the horrors of passing games all the way into the late 80s.  Just godawful.

Creating all these teams for Whoa Nellie has opened my eyes to the horrors of passing games all the way into the late 80s.  Just godawful.
it's why passer rating is irrelevant. it vastly overrates completion percentage the way the passing game now works

I will gladly be told the overtime rules every game forever, if they stop referencing the last Rose Bowl win every time a crappy Big Ten team wins a road game at UCLA

Survived to the bye, then a tricky game vs Maryland.

Long day.

I don't think people realize how much yards per attempt matters.  And TD%.  But the lack of INTs is really driving up passer ratings, too.  But yeah, I agree.

You should read the Horn Boards the torches and Pitchforks were out until they got 3 TDs in 5 minutes

Ain't nobody harder on Texas, than our own fans.

Quinn had some rust to knock off, not surprising but it was frustrating as hell to watch him miss two wide open passes, one of which was likely a TD, and then throw that pick.  But he got it together and the running game took over late.

Gonna be a hell of a game against Georgia in Austin next week.

UGA got burned repeatedly on long passes by a freshman QB yesterday.  Guys were really open, and he over threw them a few times.

:o That QB handled it well Kirby should have been slapped with 15yds and a 1st down maybe even shown the door for blindsiding & striking him. It wasn't like Smart didn't see him. Even the ref gave him a double take I guess he was "displeased" with the DC or who ever that was he was approaching

They showed the Kirby "push" in replay, and it didn't look like anything, to me, he was trying to get to a UGA player or coach and didn't see the QB, or so it looked.

I think he's used to pushing people out of his way in a game, they usually are other coaches or players.  He thinks he's a safety.

Kirby Smart Doesn’t Remember Shoving Mississippi State QB In Fourth Quarter | OutKick (https://www.outkick.com/sports/kirby-smart-shoving-mississippi-state-michael-van-buren)

"I think I was going after Schumann," Kirby Smart said postgame (https://www.dawgnation.com/football/kirby-smart-mississippi-state-quarterback-explain-what-happened-fourth-quarter-shove/4MQEU3PGIZHXXDXO4UF3MX5EHU/). "I was trying to get Schumann's attention. We were trying to change personnel. I think it's the play they came over to our sideline. And I'm trying to get Schumann's attention. But, no, I don’t really remember it."

During the Mississippi State media availability, Michael Van Buren was just as confused.
"I'm not sure what that was. I was must trying to play my game. I didn’t really see it," Van Buren said postgame.
Either way, this was not a good look for the Georgia head coach, even if he was just caught-up in the moment during the game.
Officials did not see the play, and no flag was thrown. We will see if the SEC has anything to say.

Lost in everything else, Vandy beat Kentucky on the road, 20-13.  UGA beat UK 13-12.  Vandy is now 4-2, I think I undermisestinated them last week.

They face Ball State next week and then Texas Auburn USCe LSU Tenn.  They probably will make a bowl game and have a decent shot at 7-5, and then lose their coach.

I think you're a little quick to dismiss it.  He didn't just lay hands on a student, he shoved him pretty hard. A kid from the OTHER team.  That's a really big no-no. It's really irrelevant whether or not he remembers it or did it with intent to injure.  In fact to me it's worse that he had so little regard for those around him that he d id such a thing mindlessly.

If this were a college prof he'd be immediately suspended and possibly fired.

Well, I don't think anything will come of it, I could be wrong.  I think it was inadvertent, and motive matters.  He could apologize.  I don't think any punishment is forthcoming.

Had it been the other coach pushing our QB I would think the same thing.

The QB certainly took a lot more punishment by playing than with this push.

Smart is obviously on the way to someone and pushed not knowing or caring who it was.  You could say that aspect is bad or not okay, but I think it's clear he didn't do it because it's the opposing QB.

This is how he thinks.

The Europeans discovering the Americas wasn't a big deal, if you ask him.  Ignore the displacement and near genocide of an entire continent of people.  It was just a nice discovery to find more land to settle and farm.

The leap from this to Europeans "discovering" the Americas is quite some leap.  Nobody really discovered anything of course, maybe the original inhabitants could be said to have done so.  I would opine the European, especially Spanish, actions in the "New World" had an enormous impact on history.  Spain became the wealthiest empire in the world, for a time.

Oddly enough, all this happened just at the time the Moors (and Jews) were kicked out of the Iberian peninsula.  A lot of the Jews ended up in Islamic lands (and what now is Italy).  History does indeed not rhyme, but it's fascinating.

The example is a leap, but again, here you are missing the point.  The direct correlation is your thinking.  We could use many different things as an example, some leaps, some not.  But the example isn't as important as the problem of your thinking.

But I don't expect you to acknowledge that or change anything.  You're 137 years old and set in your ways.

I agree with you in that Smart's act wasn't damning, but it was certainly something problematic.  This all-or-nothing dipshit thinking has infected our society like a plague.  Thanks for contributing to it.

We have different definitions of evil, then.  Lawyers are paid well to argue either side of an argument, unconcerned with the truth.

That's bad enough on it's face, but to be compensated well for it is something I deem highly unethical.  But I'm the problematic weirdo here.

Some lawyers are paid to do that, criminal defense lawyers of course, it's their job, and part of our justice system, an important part, that an accused he representation who advocates for his case.  A lot of lawyers don't do this at all.  The prepare wills, or patents, or do corporate law, or worry about regulations, etc.

I worked with a number of patent attorneys and still count as friends 2 or 3 of them.

The injury case lawyers broadly speaking rate lower in my own book of "evility".  But they too can have a legitimate role.

No. He did not get down in time.  It was not a first down so the clock wouldn’t stop when he goes down, which was with one second left.  Not nearly enough time to communicate a time out.

I cant blame him for the loss.

If you would have told any knowledgeable CFB or Buckeye fan that He would go into that hostile environment and:

go 28/35 for 80% completion, 326 yards, 2 TDs, no picks, no fumbles and run for a TD,
you would certainly predict a big win.

Not only that, but given a challenge to drive them late for a winning FG attemp, he would get them to the Oregon 28, 1st and 10, 42 seconds left, and 1 timeout- you would say great job, especially in that environment.

Also lost in everything…to make a point from our geography discussion last week:

...but specifically Michigan has a well-documented history (https://www.si.com/college/michigan/football/michigan-wolverines-west-coast-troubles-before-a-road-test-at-washington-huskies) of losing road trips out West.

@Mdot21 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1595) and others mentioned the same thing.  First I want to point out that this is FAR from a "Michigan" thing.  All of our teams have trouble with West Coast games and in this new era having four league members out there it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

both Los Angeles schools lost at home to schools heralding from traditional Big Ten territory. Minnesota’s game Vs ULCA didn’t kickoff until what was around 10PM local time to Minneapolis.

Worth noting Ohio State lost @ Oregon and Washington was blown out @ Iowa in a game that kciked off at 9AM Seattle time.

It was actually a 8pm CDT start in Arroyo Seco. And the Gophers didnt need to be on the West Coast to pull off their usual slow start.

she was incredible back in her prime. then she went and married one of the ugliest human beings I think I've ever seen in Jay-Z and went to one too many Diddy parties with him.

I would say looks don't matter when you have a billion dollars....but she has a billion dollars of her own. So make that one make sense.

Anyways, Dua Lipa is a 10/10 right now.

Well yeah, she's in her 40s now.

And I have no idea who she married, nor do I care.  I've heard the name Jay Z but wouldn't recognize a picture and I have no idea what he's famous for. It is inconsequential to me.

Someone should study you.  You've GOT to be on several government lists, right?

We all should be considering who makes the list these days. Just no in Mdot's "unique" fashion

Once back in my blogging days, I had a post that my referrer logs highlighted multiple hits from "state.gov"... And then for about 18 months every time I flew my boarding pass had the "SSSS" on it for enhanced screening. Funny thing is that I usually got through FASTER than the ones who didn't have that lol.

That's ended, so I guess I'm off the lists. At least for the next few weeks if a certain someone doesn't get elected... If that's the case I might suddenly [be] disappear[ed]...
