Title: A National Championship Rematch! This Time Much Stupider (SOC Week 6)
Post by: MaximumSam on October 04, 2024, 06:01:04 PM
Man, it's been a long week. Having to deal with issues with my parents and traveling last weekend, and have to do it again next weekend. Work has been a long slog of getting kicked in the nuts. But I'm finally home, I've got tortillas warming in the oven, the wife and kids went to King's Island, so it's time to settle in for a whole lot of nothing for 48 hours. God bless beer.

Flying to Wyoming to see parents.   Probably won't hunker down all weekend for games.   Beartooth highway still open another week or so, will torment my youngest with that drive.

We have a VIP party at our local haunt from 3-5 today. Free food and drink. Just gonna do that and not bother with anything else.

I'm starting to get vibes that Purdue is going to win today.

My wife sleeps later than me, she's not up yet.  When I hear her stirring I bring up coffee.  The local bar opens today at 10 AM and they do a credible brunch thing.  Brunch seems really popular here now that I think about it.  A ton of places do it on Sat-Sun.

It might be an excuse to have an alcoholic beverage before noon in some cases.

UGA hosts Auburn at 1530.  I wonder if UGA has a hangover and might need one of the above.

Horns off today, I'll be spending most of the day putting up Halloween decorations.  Gotta rebuild several of the characters, wind was awful last year and they took a beating.

But I'm sure I'll catch some foosball here and there.

Good luck to all of your sportsball teams in their endeavors.

Sure!  I've posted pics before, I'll pull down one from last year for now.  It's Beetlejuice theme and since there's a new movie out this year, I think I'm going to try to add a character.

The blue floodlight on Beetlejuice himself doesn't show up very well in pictures, it looks a lot better in real life, but even so I think this year I'm going with all green footlighting.

Always loved the families that decorated for Halloween and Christmas
When the kids were growing up.

Our neighborhood really goes all out.  When we moved in, our next door neighbor had a big front yard Halloween display featuring The Nightmare Before Christmas.  He's a talented metal fabricator and had hand-built a 12-ft Jack Skellington, a 10-ft. Oogie Boogie, several other characters, and a bunch of props to go with it.  I was putting out a couple of ghost-things hanging in the trees and some spider webs on the porch.  It wasn't cutting it, so I decided to add to the Tim Burton theme and do up our house in Beetlejuice. My neighbor helped me a lot with the PVC building and such, and his daughters (who were then in middle school and now college graduates) helped paint the faces and such, because I'm terrible at that stuff.

Here's a closer pic of Beetlejuice where he shows up better.  Still think I'm going to green this year.

Is Miami still a coke haven? I kinda thought that went away.

As for the team itself, this is not daddy's Miami. The days of the Hurrigangstas and CoCanes are long gone.

Definitely going to hit up something for lunch. Starting to feel like a good Italian sandwich. Unfortunately, the place down the street doesn't open up until 4. There is a DiBella's not too far away, though I've never had their Italian. I'll be annoyed if it isn't very good.

Haha Tombstone for life
Though a good pizza bagel is pretty good. Slather it in olive oil and toast until gold brown and delicious, then toast again all topped up. Not bad drunk food.

We're 5 hours ahead of ET, 8 ahead of PT. I don't know what time zone I have my profile set to so I don't know what time I sent that, but it is 4 PM in Ireland right now.

I do know I sent that after we got back from a pub and before we went to a pub.

Lol awesome. I remember the pubs in Dublin mostly carrying Guinness and Guinness Extra Cold. On the west side Murphys was more popular - is it still that way?

The bartender at the first pub was saying that an American came in and ordered a Murphy's and said "Hmm. This is what Guinness tastes like at home. I won't be having that." Said they're a tourist bar and as soon as tourist season ends (probably quite soon) they'll stop ordering Murphy's until the spring.

I was drinking a local brewery's stuff there, at the second pub I did have a Guinness. I can confirm Guinness does, indeed, taste better here.

Had a breakfast burrito after. Now gotta rush through stretching (not going well) and get it the Badger bar.

TAMU whooping Mizzou

Yes, not surprised @Gigem (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1706) 's Aggies are winning. After two home wins by slim margins Vs Boston College & Vanderbilt, Missouri felt due for a loss. But boy is A&M uniformly dominating - up 24-0 and leaving the Tigers looking nothing like a ranked team, much less their #9 ranking. Several untimely penalties have cost Missouri big yards and even a long TD called back.

Returning from injury, this is the Conner Weigman A&M fans have been waiting for after signing as a top ranked QB in the 2022 class (ranked alongside Cade Klubnik & Drew Allar). Weigman's stats nearing halftime are 13/17for 171yds. More notably he showing perfect command of the offense, knowing when to tuck and run, rushing for 37yds for several key first downs.

Aggies defense holding Missouri to only 63yds thus far.

Purdue is Permabad
Yeah which is pretty crazy because they went from playing for the B1G chip in ‘21 and going 6-3 in conference play in ‘22 under Jeff Brohm to 3-6 in conference play in ‘23 and now looking like maybe the worst team in the country in ‘24 under Ryan Walters.

Shows you how important coaching is. Jeff Brohm is a hell of a coach. Ryan Walters is not. Some guys should just stick to being top flight co-ordinators. There’s nothing wrong with that. Not everyone has it to be a head coach.

Wow down goes Bama!

I'm wondering if these risky, barn burner type games will become alarmingly common for Alabama. Two weeks in row the Bama defense isn't what it was under Saban. Gone is the killer instinct that could stop any offense cold or at least do its part to keep Bama in games they eventually but rarely lost. It's nearing twenty years since we've seen a Bama defense that can't reliably get off the field, which is the case for 6 straight quarters now.

SC went tempo on their first series but stalled, and the wind got a hold of a 46 yd FGA.

Also, they made good use of the wind in the 1st quarter. It has swung around to the northwest.

Jack Tuttle = QB1.

Orji just ain’t got it at QB, time to move to TE or LB maybe?

We all knew Michigan’s QB were ass. I’m more perplexed and concerned with the defense. Wink Martindale is fucking atrocious. Dude was run out of the NFL for a reason. He is ass. Washed. Washed ass.

Back to Tuttle for a second…is it just me or does he eat ground and accelerate a lot faster than Orji?

Orji takes a long time to pick up a head of steam but once he gets going he’s a bitch to bring down. But the burst just doesn’t look there. Tuttle looks to have much better burst/acceleration.

Michigan looked dead in the water down 14-0.

Tuttle goes in and they score 10 to actually make it a game, 14-10.

Starting to think the only reason Tuttle wasn’t named QB1 in fall camp is because of injuries. Looks like he’s healthy now and the only option they have. Davis Warren sucks and Alex Orji is an athlete- not a QB.

Agreed. That block on the FG by Mason Graham was HUGE. Now it’s 4 point game and they get the ball to open the 2nd half with a chance to take the lead.

At 14-0 I was 100000% expecting this thing to go into Washington blow out mode. Thought Michigan was dead in the water. Especially with Orji a 14 point deficit might as well be a 30 point deficit with him.

We suck.

Should’ve ran the ball there to try and get a more manageable 2nd and 3rd down. But nope.

Sherrone Moore needs to put a bullet in Kirk Campbell and Wink Martindale in the off season and find new co-ordinators or else he won’t even make it 3 years as the head coach.

I like Sherrone. I think he can be a legit head coach. But he ain’t doing squat without a QB and without replacing most of this ass staff.

He didn’t have much time to really put together a staff and the QB situation Jeem left him with was pretty much ass. JJ didn’t declare for the draft until the top portal guys were already committed and Jeem did a piss poor job recruiting QB’s in the ‘22 and ‘23 classes.

Sherrone needs to take Portnoy up on his offer and get a legit QB in the portal or sign a day one starter like Bryce Underwood and Sherrone needs to fire Wink and Kirk and most of his assistant coaches or he’s going to be fired mid 2026. He’ll get all 2025 to prove himself- but that’s it…if it starts going south in ‘26 I think he’ll be fired before the end of that season.

Just got home. Wow. What a turnaround. Thoughts:

- The stadium was as dead as Abraham Lincoln after SC went up 17-10.

- For those watching at home, did any replays on the go-ahead TD actually show Brosmer get the ball across? None of the in stadium replays showed it.

-Koi Perich is going to be playing safety on Sundays in 3 years. I hope he stays here for all of it.

- I'm going to sound like ten miles of bad road in the morning.

- Some pictures from tonight.

Wish I could see the pics.
No pics showed Brosmer over the goal line on 3rd down - you could not see the QB. But on 4th down it was very clear, and I was about as pissed in real time as P.J.   Ish - did I admit that? But yes, I was rooting for the gophers, and their victory on television was clear, even before the referees' lazy eyes perceived, and overruled the field call.

Another interesting one is #8 Miami. Ordinarily being #8 and barely surviving against an unranked team will drop you a few spots but in this case not likely. Two teams ahead of them and the three teams immediately behind them all lost so they looked really good by comparison.

1,4,9, 10, 11 all lost

When was the last time this many in the top eleven lost, often to unranked teams?

I recall various "Upset Saturdays" in the past, but not quite to this extent.  #25 and #22 also lost, and #8 barely won.

The rankings will be amusing.

I know nobody likes the portal and the NIL stuff- but maybe because of it we are starting to see some parity in a sport that had absolutely none for 80+ years? and parity is a good thing in sports. very good thing.

which is why Saint Nick left Bama. he knew he couldn't just load up his roster better than the other teams via 'crootin and bag men and keep said roster wholly intact anymore. he knew there was nothing he could do about it and it was a fact of life that he was going to lose guys to the portal and NIL and not have the massive roster advantage in every single game he played anymore.

This is a thing. Big schools can pay more, but players are motivated to play, too, so they don't need to sit around and wait for a spot to open up. Plus every team has the capability to fill trouble spots, so every team is improved.

Bama wins that game 99 times out of 100, it's not in my view some mark of parity, or near parity.

Vandy probably is a bit better than in the recent past, but they will still end up 4-8 or somesuch.

Bama's defense looks like absolute dog shit two weeks in a row now. Hard for me to say they win any game 99 times out of 100 with a defense that shit-tack-ular.

My guess is Bama ends up 10-2, and Vandy 4-8.  They are not remotely at the same talent level.  Maybe NIL leads to more parity down the road, it's possible, but this isn't a good example in my view.  I think the portal (which is connected) is of more value to "lesser teams".

A down and out program can potentially get better players pretty quickly now as opposed to recruiting and still having a very young team at best.

But Vandy has nowhere near the talent of a Bama.

that is not my point nor did I claim it was.

my point was that Bama has nowhere near the talent level and depth it USED to always have and that's because: portal/NIL.

There are HS kids that Bama would've signed in the past that went elsewhere because of NIL (Miami and Tennessee have a few of 'em that I can think of) and then there are kids that would've had no choice but to stay at Bama or lose a year of eligibility- that now bounce and hit the portal because they want more playing time or they want to play in a different scheme.

You think Isaiah Bond + Ryan Williams would coverable? Cause I don't.

Every season, there’s teams that have a surprise shit the bed moment. Bama losing to Vandy is this years. I don’t know how that proves a ton of talent is leaving Bama for NIL money because they just beat Georgia the week before. If anything, this is a hangover moment. I’m personally one hoping for parity, but the big boys that were secretly spending the most behind the scenes are going to be the ones legally spending now imo. That will lead to more of the same.

Just got home. Wow. What a turnaround. Thoughts:

- The stadium was as dead as Abraham Lincoln after SC went up 17-10.

My brother, a USC grad, was also at the game last night. Was set up with some very good seats along the visiter’s sideline.

With USC leading 17-10 for a long stretch of the 2nd half, I was thinking maybe Lincoln Riley already has a feel for winning in the Big Ten? Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise to get away from his high-flying brand of finesse offenses and be forced to go with a more methodical QB that can take a beating? Because this is how you survive in the more physical Big Ten. But then Minnesota clawed back for a gutty win and I’m sure Riley’s critics reemerged in full force.

That was criminal.  Miami has gotten the benefit of two really controversial replay reviews two weeks in a row.  If that was called targeting like it should have been I’m not sure they win the game.

I think replay folks were advised not to call targetting unless it's blatantly obvious.  They probably were too generous at first, and now they are too conservative.

Also, re: parity: This sport goes in cycles. There are some years, like 2005, where USC and Texas were so far ahead of the field that everywhere else were fighting over the scraps.

Then other years, like 2007, where no one knows what to expect and the #1 ranking gets kicked around like a football.

2001 somehow managed to have both.

It appears that this year is much more like an 07.

Vandy is not a bad team.  Pavia is legit.  They took Mizzou to OT.  They do however have a brutal schedule.  Ball State should be a win.  Wouldn't surprise me to see them win two or three more on top of Ball State.

They lost to Georgia State.  Maybe they beat Auburn and Ball State and possibly one between UK and USCe, maybe.  They do have a winning lifetime record vs Texas.

So, maybe they finish between 4-8 and 6-6 at best, I think.  That, to me, is a bad team, maybe mediocre is a better term.  And maybe Tennessee goes south and they snag that one.  I hope they suprise me on the upside.  They are at UK next week, that should tell us more.

I had never heard that because on field officials are trained to throw the flag on targeting if you’re unsure.  They are taught to err on the side of caution.  Don’t know why replay officials would get different instructions.

Besides any of that, what the Miami kid did was textbook targeting.  Idk how anyone could have looked at that replay and determined it wasn’t targeting.  That is the exact hit they are trying to get out of the game.

I think challenges ahould be part of the strategy.  No automatic reviews, but everything is challengeable.  You get unlimited challenges, but for every one you get wrong, you lose a timeout.  If you have no timeouts, you lose the ability. to challenge

Despite the two losses by conference teams in the top 25, the Big Ten remained strong with six teams in the Coaches poll top 25 and six in the AP poll. Ohio State (No. 2 Coaches / No. 2 AP) leads the way in the conference while Oregon (No. 3 Coaches / No. 3 AP) and Penn State (No. 5 Coaches / No. 5 AP) jumped up following the boatload of upsets. Indiana (No. 20 Coaches / No.18 AP), Michigan (No. 21 Coaches / No. 24 AP), and Illinois (No. 23 Coaches / 23 AP) remained in the top 25. USC fell out of the coaches and AP polls after their stunning 24-17 loss in Minneapolis.

The Southeastern Conference features the top overall team in Texas, and holds nine of the 25 spots in the coaches poll. The SEC also includes nine in the AP poll. The ACC has four teams included, while the BIg 12 three programs. Boise State is the highest rated non-Power four conference program at No. 22 in the coaches and No. 17 by the Associated Press.

Miami 39-38 California (Oct 5, 2024) Final Score - ESPN (https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/401635568/miami-california)

Their "win possibility predictor" graphic is epic.
USF, VaTech, and Cal game shows you just how important the QB is.

Cam Ward is so good he’s basically won all 3 of those games by himself despite Miami and Cristobal trying their best to beef everyone of them.

Miami got the prize of the portal when they signed him. Lucky bastards.

Dude went from no one giving a shit about him when he played at crappy schools like Incarnate Word and Washington State to now being a Heisman front runner and projected 1st round NFL draft pick.

I saw how good Ward was last year when he beat Wisconsin all by himself.

When he hit the portal that was my first choice.

$$$$$$$$$$$ won.

Miami had that super fan Jon Ruiz the founder/CEO majority share holder of that LifeWallet company buying up all kinds of players for Miami with NIL deals.

Dude is under investigation by the feds for all kinds of fraud, he’s being sued by everyone, and LifeWallet is teetering on bankruptcy.

Classic Miami story right there.

Miami probably not going to be buying very many players going forward…

Yep. Their NIL was one guy.

They're going to take a hit for sure, but they've actually got other NIL donors that contribute.  This isn't Oregon/Nike.  They're organized and efficient, they'll still be in the Top 15 or so NIL programs.  Maybe top 10.

That said, although Cam Ward is quite good, the ACC refs are propping up this team.  This is a 3 or 4 loss team in the B1G or SEC.  I'd actually be happy if I were a fan of a team that gets matched up with them in the CFP.

Can Miami use NIL to pay people to go to their home games?

they don't even have home games lol. they play at the Miami Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium.

they would be better suited just building a 40,000-50,000 near campus stadium than bussing 30 mins to Hard Rock Stadium which seats like 70k and they barely fill half of it up.

while all of this is true, still a dangerous team to play because of him imo. when a QB that good is ON and locked in and in the zone and just operating at a high level he can win his teams games they have no business winning.

Q: What do you call a coach in Alabama who takes his ranked team into Nashville and loses to Vandy?

A: Senator

This fall, nearly 30 students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have been sponsored by Runza to cheer on the Huskers.

I had forgotten it was Saturday and tuned in to find Florida up 21-3 on UCF.  Good to see the Gators win.  Not a lot of likely wins going forward.

That was one hell of a Saturday, though.  Vanderbilt?  VANDERBILT!
That is a case of Bama having a normal, we-all-have-them letdown game after blowing your load in an epic showdown the week before.  Vanderbilt is usually immune to cashing in, unless it's a noon kickoff.  Bama is usually immune, thanks to Saban, but he's gone now.

Tennessee losing was crazy, too.  UM.  USC.  Wow, just wow.
It all seems less important now, obviously, but Eric would have loved the Vandy result.  He absolutely loved the underdog in general.
I'm pleased that FSU lost once again and looks to be in shambles.  I'm not above enjoying that, even when I'm mourning.

Part of the beauty of college football is that an initially 'bleh' schedule of games can often yield these WTF results.  The NFL doesn't have a Vandy.  They don't have a Bama.  They're communist.  College football is free-market (especially now, but you know what I mean).  It's the only way impossible upsets can happen.

I just appreciated the distraction for a few hours on Saturday.  Been getting as much 'stuff' out of their house today as we can - donating medical stuff and selling collectibles the family has no desire to keep.  Not fun, but anything to help out.

From Jon Wilner of Bay Area News Group (https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/as-uw-showed-michigan-big-ten-travel-demands-are-taking-hold-analysis/):

Quote
After weeks of nonconference matchups played on home fields, the league season has ramped up. So, too, have the cross-country trips. You’ll never guess how those results are playing out.
Teams traveling at least two time zones for conference matchups are 1-8 thus far, and the lone win — Indiana over UCLA in the Rose Bowl — carries a significant caveat: The Hoosiers were coming off a Friday game, at home, against Western Illinois. (They had an extra day to prepare and a cupcake to eat.)
The eight losing teams that have traveled multiple time zones are USC (at Michigan and Minnesota), Michigan State (at Oregon), Washington (at Rutgers), Northwestern (at Washington), UCLA (at Penn State), Wisconsin (at USC), and Michigan (at Washington).
The list of losses includes several next-level logistical hurdles: Washington and Michigan State had long trips on short weeks (for Friday games), while UCLA kicked at 9 a.m. Pacific in its blowout loss Saturday at Penn State — the same start time the Huskies will face next weekend at Iowa.
To be clear: There is more to the losses noted above than taxing travel. But it stands to reason that the impact of air miles logged and time zones crossed adds to the timeless challenges posed by matchups, injuries and mistakes. We should also note that of the eight road teams that crossed the Rockies and lost, only USC was favored to win its matchup (at both Michigan and Minnesota).
