Well here we are. The first matchup of the Red River Rivalry in the SEC, and both teams have a bye next week so we get TWO weeks of hatred this season.
OU looked a little shaky earlier in the season but played decent against both @Auburn and in a home loss to Tennessee.
Texas looked pretty good earlier in the season but just had a pretty awful game against a bad MSU team.
What can we take from all of that? Nothing. Because this is a rivalry game full of passionate, unbridled hate. It's terrible and glorious all at the same time.
Personally I'm not too upset that Texas had a rough game yesterday-- it's pretty clear the team got over-confident and that's a terrible way to enter the TX-OU game. Humbled and angry is how I want Texas to spend the next 2 weeks preparing for OU.
Anyway, let the official Hate Week(s) begin!

I'm sure the teams are focused on the game. Fans don't have the same requirements.

I absolutely hate that! Just like I hate Baylor's pregame prayer when the chaplain concludes, "Sic 'em, JESUS!"
I didn't like the "Bear Bryant walks on water and dictates policy to God" talk and signage when I lived in Alabama, 1968-69. That was why I rooted for Auburn.
Maybe that guy in the picture needs to see a sign that says, "JESUS HATES FATSOS!"
Anyway, Texas SUX!
That's all the hate I can generate 12 days out.

I think it's funny. Maybe a little sacrilegious but I like to think God has a heck of a sense of humor, and that he passed it on to his son.:)

Lots of confidence on the OU side, and why not? Feels like they've won about 23 of the last 25, including last year.

I'd guess that that was from last year. I'm not hearing any yapping from OU fans I know. Nor any coming out of the football program.

Last year? Coming off a 49-0 shellacking, the worst OU loss in series history? That doesn't seem to track.
Either way, I can't blame them. Texas has been pretty putrid in the series since 2000.

Yeah it was after 1995 which ended in an unusual tie game. The last season of the tie game in college football, and Texas and OU played to one. I was at all of those games from 1989 through 2017 except for one, the year my daughter was born a week before the game (2007).

We'll likely be catching this one on delay, as there is a family reunion this Saturday around noon. Whatever time we get done there, it's an hour and a half drive back home.
I want to know which of my aunts/uncles/cousins is responsible for this, because last weekend would've been perfect as both LSU and Texas were both on a bye. Whereas this weekend is LSU/Ole Miss and UT/OU. Even though I'm sure most of them don't care about RRS, I fail to see an excuse for potentially interfering with the Magnolia Bowl.
Right now I give it a 50% chance that Mrs. DeLonghorn is going to wake up Saturday morning with a "headache" and oh dear, it's so sad, but she needs to stay home and not get out.

Yeah. I'm sure their sentiments have changed since. :34:

There was a story a few years ago about an Ala grad scheduling her wedding during an Alabama game. Her parents went to the game instead and when other Tide fans when questioned about it, they uniformly asked what wtf was wrong with that girl and how could she do that to her parents.
It does indeed just mean more.

I'm skeptical of the veracity of that story.

You may be right. It was included in the The System: The Glory and Scandal of Big-Time College Football by Jeff Benedict an SI writer but no idea how much was second hand and or just apocryphal.

This thread is for saying hateful things about Texas and/or OU.

Under Sarkisian, Texas has scored 30, 49, and 48 points in this game. And his record is 1-2. Offense has not been the problem, and I don't expect it to be a problem this year either.
The Texas defense has GOT to play better than it did last year. A lot better.
-
Texas 38 OU 24
-
The Texas defense went out and bought itself a pass rush. Oddly, it's the freshman recruit, Colin Simmons, doing the most damage from the DE position.
At any rate, he's the "timer". The DBs only have to hold their coverage for as long as it takes the DEs to do their job. This, combined with time in the system, means there's finally enough back-end talent for PK's goofy hybrid coverage schemes.
If I were the Sooners OC, I'd weigh that information against the MSU tape showing potential leaks in the Texas interior defensive line. Arguing in the negative, there could likely be myriad reasons why that same (relative) success won't be available Saturday. If I've got a true freshman making his start at QB, plus a MASH unit at receiver, I'm certainly going to hope to exploit those leaks until proven otherwise.
(Its should be noted that those interior "leaks" netted MSU 6 total points).
The old adage is that the best swordsman doesn't fear the 2nd best swordsman. He fears the total neophyte who doesn't know enough to be predictable.

Yes I have reasons for optimism, on both sides of the ball, actually. The truth is that Texas has beaten all of its opponents badly enough that the Horns have had to show very little beyond the most basic schemes, sets, and plays. Texas' "struggles" against MSU were largely of our own making, Sarkisian stated afterward that the defense refused to adjust its scheme despite MSU alterations to its gameplan, because no matter what they did, he knew it wouldn't be enough to win the game. It is highly unlikely that he'd utilize the same approach vs. OU.
-
The MSU game also seemed to be a lesson in the importance of focusness. A lot of the defensive leaks were missed tackles. The players were in the right position, got their arms around the target, but used bad form, a lazy fit, or tried to bang down the carrier. This wasn't seen in the previous games.
The disease wasn't limited to the defense. The offense committed false starts, holding penalties (that only seemed to occur when we had the ball, but I digress), dropped passes, and fumbles. These are still college kids. You can tell them to be "on" every week, but they won't believe you.
No one needs a reminder to be up for this game. I like Sark's statement to "play with emotion, but not emotional".
-
Red zone production is DRAMATICALLY up. And it's not just because of the level of competition thus far this season. We struggled in the red zone even against terrible teams last year.

I don't know about that.
I just know that that was not in the aftermath of an 0-49 thrashing (per your comments) but rather in the aftermath of a tough-fought 34-30 win. Stutsman (the LB) said it in the locker room after last year's game.
-

I wasn't asserting it came after the 49-0 drubbing, was just questioning the timing if it had.
And they might be right. Mack Brown teams certainly always played like scared little pussies in this game. I'm hopeful that Sarkisian doesn't succumb to the same bitchassedness.
-
If the Sooners had one advantage in that game with Stoops, it's that his gambler's mindset always had him daring the odds. He'd call his timeouts to preserve 0:30 at the end of the half to try and milk an extra 3 points if possible. Mack would not want to risk a turnover, so he'd kneel out the clock.
If you analyze the entire body of work, Stoops' tactics would cost him many winnable games when he wouldn't protect leads with clock-aware offense - usually against far inferior competition. In the RRS, it usually worked to his advantage on the big stage, giving him a larger reputation than maybe deserved.
Sark calls formations. It's up to his QBs (and the rest of the team) to recognize the necessary play. It's necessarily so ingrained into them that the offense can't work any other way. When a given group of players is on the field (11, 12, 21), there's a correct alignment and a correct attack based on how the defense aligns. There's always a passing option and a running option built in. The players know their role, and the QB knows how to best leverage that play. That's what's gonna happen. What looks like aggression os really just putting the ball where the defense is either busted out, or the player has a one-on-one opportunity to show he's better.
I suppose, at the end of time sensitive tactical situations, Sark can tell the team "run no matter what". That would be the only time you'd see a deliberate run into a heavy defensive box.

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:
Both the iconic "steerhead" logo of the Texas Longhorns athletic teams and the burnt orange color worn by them were the result of the work of one man: William "Rooster" Andrews.
In 1961, coach Darrell Royal talked to Andrews, who at at time was a salesman for C&S Sporting Goods, about ways to improve the Longhorns uniform. Back then, the Longhorns' helmets were white with orange numerals on the side and a thin orange stripe down the center. Andrews told Royal he had an idea and would work on it that night. He found a Longhorn head in a book, traced it and colored it in with crayon, and then found a distributor to make decals of the logo. They were added onto the helmets of the 1961 Longhorn football team and have remained there ever since.
One year later, Royal and Andrews worked together to change the uniform color from the bright orange that was then used to the burnt orange in use today. Royal wanted the color to be darker, closer to the color of the football, the way the practice uniforms looked when they were stained with sweat after a hot, hard practice. Andrews soaked a uniform in water and showed it to a manufacturer who was then able to make uniforms with the burnt orange color.
Andrews, who stood all of 4'11", was a colorful character. From 1941 to 1945 he was both the team manager for the Longhorns football team and a roommate with future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne. In 1943, during World War II when many schools suspended their football programs due to lack of men, Texas had trouble finding a kicker. Andrews showed off his drop kick style in practice, an unusual style at the time, and earned a chance to play by winning a kicking contest in practice. His first chance came against TCU when he kicked two extra points and had a third attempt blocked, enraging TCU coach Dutch Meyer who saw the use of the team's water boy as an insult. Meyer dared coach Dana X. Bible to use Andrews the following week against Texas A&M and Bible did, with Andrews kicking two more extra points and having a field goal blocked.
Rooster continued to play in the 1944 and 1945 seasons. On a few occasions he faked the kick and instead threw passes to Bobby Layne, a play that succeeded once against Oklahoma in 1945 and once in his final game, the 1946 Cotton Bowl. Twice he connected with Layne for touchdowns. But Andrews primary job was to keep his roommate, hard-partying, hard-drinking quarterback Bobby Layne, out of trouble.
In addition to managing the football team, Andrews played seven different positions for the UT baseball team as a part-time player in 1944–45, and was a manager in 1946. Once sent in to draw a base on balls, he hit a game-winning home run instead.
His nickname, "Rooster," came from a college incident in which he broke an arm trying to retrieve a chicken from a tree.
In 1971, Rooster opened a sporting goods store in Austin. In 1971 he opened the first of his own sporting goods stores in Austin. At its peak, Rooster Andrews Sporting Goods had four retail locations across Austin and employed more than 70 people.
Rooster Andrews died in 2008 at the age of 84, having been friends with just about everybody who ever was anybody in Texas during his lifetime. He was one of those people who always had a smile on his face when you'd visit one of his stores. I still have a football he sold to me in 1994.
Shown here: Rooster Andrews (center) during his time as a player/manager for the Longhorns football team and the Longhorns logo he invented. In 2013, Athlon Sports named the steerhead logo that Andrews developed as the nation's best college football logo.

UGA fans would be pretty split on the question, UF fans probably are with FSU. UGA's main rivals, for most folks, include Auburn, Tenn, UF, and Tech. The UGA fans I've known have told me if we won one game a year, it would be against th Gators, but that's a small group. So, that is a point of difference.

Yeah this is what I'm getting at. TX-OU definitely feels a lot more like Michigan-Ohio State, than any other rivalry.
But the neutral site for UF-UGA is really cool. Should split at the 50s though, instead of through the endzone. At the Cotton Bowl, the amount of hate you feel emanating from the opponent's endzone is palpable, and game-impacting.

So long as nobody assaults me in any way, I don't really care.
I saw a Biden bumper sticker on a car yesterday. It looked pretty new, the sticker. A resident here put a Biden sign on his balcony but it was removed quickly. The restaurants around us mostly have he gay flag thing all over because tomorrow is the Pride Festival.

Damn skippy! Hell, I hate Tenn just because their color orange is close to Texass orange. :38:
-
I dislike most teams with orange on their unis. I kind of like Texas for some reason. Our close rivals all have orange, Auburn, UF, Tenn sort of, Clemson, Tech not really.
I look forward to the UT-UGA game, though unless the Dawgs find a first quarter offense, it will probably be ugly.
-
Well, the game didn't live up to expectations.
Congrats to the Longhorns. They were solid (or better) in all phases of the game. UGA looks like the only team remaining that might threaten UT in the regular season.

Thanks C-Dubb, Sooners fought hard and made a game out of it in the first half. Ultimately y'all weren't able to overcome the loss of all of those WRs, and the Sooner o-line is a work in progress as well.
Can't really say anything bad about the freshman QB, he played as well as he could in a challenging position.
Best of luck the rest of the way.

You've got a monster team, Utee. I imagine that the Longhorns are the favorites to win the NC. If not, they should be.

Ewers better play better then he did against OU or were the ones who are doomed
Yup. He clearly had some rust in the 1st half yesterday. He got better throughout the game but was never what I would call "comfortable and crisp" as he was before the injury.
-
You can see the habits Sark coached out of him during his tenure. He showed a few of them Saturday. I'm guessing that'll be the focus in practice this week.
-
I expect him to have a better performance. I mean, as rusty as it was, there's no comparison to his dismal meltdown in the same game last year.
But this week, and every week hereafter, the stakes will continue to grow.

The footwork, the arm angles, eyes that mislead the defense. All these things turn a QB from a guy with good skills to a contender. Last year, Quinn was trying to remember all those things when he was on the field. When he got hurried, he reverted to his high school style.
This season, he's obviously internalized them to the point where they were automatic. With a month layoff, he let some of those bad habits creep back in. Now that he's confident in his arm again, and the ability to take hits like a football player, I suspect this week will be about locking back in to the good habits.
