B1G Noon Saturday.
The Badgers played one great quarter last weekend. Everything clicked like it's supposed to. And then it didn't.
That was South Dakota.
This week is not that.
-
I feel the Badgers are in big trouble but, I'm rooting for the upset
-
Some rumblings out of Madison that there might be some position changes coming. DL, LB and OL, and possibly RB.
-
always thought those should happen before fall camp
-
Kids play differently when the lights come on.
If not for this game, I suspect the staff will use the following week (idle) to make changes.
-
Yup, there really are just "gamers" and you have to let them do their thing. Major Applewhite was a better QB than Chris Simms and he proved it time and again on the field, but Mack never could get over how great Simms looked in practice. And it's no knock on Simms, he was actually quite good. But Major was even better-- in games.
-
Dooley once whispered that Herschel looked like a "big, stiff, fullback" in practice.

Very little change to the depth chart. Not great.

big opportunity this week

There are, but not a lot of them.
And their numbers pale in comparison to players who are A. Lazy B. Guys that fans desperately wish were gamers.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't think this is going to go well for Wisconsin. They haven't looked as good as I expected so far.
-
big opportunity this week
I agree. There are good opportunities and bad opportunities.
Saturday is when we find out just how far Wisconsin has fallen since 2019.
I don't think Fick (or I or anyone else for that matter) realized just how much of a rebuild Wisconsin was when he took over.
-
Alabama seemed to struggle with USF until the 4th quarter, there could be some opportunity here for Wisconsin to show out and make a statement.
-
They don't have the horses.
They have one NFL player on each side right now. Bama has 9 on each side.
They are simply 1-2 years away in my opinion.
Probably 2, since there will likely be a new OC next year.

I wouldn’t give it to Bama just yet. The USF game was practically tied until late in the 4th quarter. I can’t recall a time when a top program replaced a great coach with a successful follow up.

If you are talking about back-to-back coaches to win the MNC at the same school, I think it's a short list - or non-existent.
Maybe Notre Dame at some point? Early Michigan, before helmets? The early Ivies?
-
Devaney/Osborne
20+ seasons between titles, but it happened
-
Forgot about that one, probably because of the time difference.
Ozzie don't get that kind of time these days.

This is one of those things where you just have to tip your hat to Saban (GOAT) and say wow, well done! As a Buckeye it is nice that tOSU is #2 but what stood out to me was the size of the gap between Bama and everyone else. #2 tOSU is closer to #5 M than they are to #1 Bama:
- 61 Bama
- 49 tOSU, difference of 12
- 45 UGA, difference of 4
- 39 LSU, difference of 6
- 38 M, difference of 1
- 36 ND, difference of 2
- 36 PSU, tie
- 33 OU, difference of 3
- 31 TX, difference of 2
- 30 Clemson, difference of 1
- 30 UF, tie
- 29 UWash, difference of 1
Bama is just in a world of their own here.
-
I count 31 for Wisconsin.

This is a great read.
How Alabama football goes on the road and makes it home: ‘A lot goes into it’ - The Athletic (nytimes.com) (https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5761674/2024/09/12/alabama-football-travel-wisconsin-away-games/?campaign=5888993&source=dailyemail&userId=341943)

Priceless!😂😂

I'm trying to find a path to victory for Wisconsin here and I'm having a hard time. Everything would have to come together in a perfect storm sort of way. Given how UW played against WMU and USD, I just can't see it. Bama has bench players that would start at Wisconsin, at almost every position, except maybe 2-3 players.
Hunter Wohler, Ricardo Hallman and Will Pauling are the most talented players on the Badger roster.
They need to play 3 DL instead of 2, like they have. Bama will gash them if they only play 2. They need to spy Milroe the whole game, and I think they have a guy to do that. That's their only hope of keeping Bama from scoring at will.
I hope Wisconsin brings an offense.

I would hope so

I'm not a big fan of that philosophy.

I'd be curious to have @rolltidefan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=12) and @ALA2262 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=46) weigh in here with their perspectives on this game.
Also @bayareabadger (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1571) @Badger1969 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=67) and @SFBadger96 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=51) .
Watcha got?
-
The first half line is 7.5 points and it is taking a lot of patience to not bet too much money on Alabama not covering that with ease.
-
Alabama 35, Wisconsin 17

Every time an offense starts slowly, someone gives the excuse, it’s a silly excuse every time.
-
Huskers defense blitzed zero times vs UTEP
didn't show CU anything - why blitz vs UTEP when you know it won't matter?
blitzed against CU and had 6 sacks by 6 different players
I'd hold plenty back if I had Bama coming into town
-
whenever I think of blitzing, I think of Minnesota Coach Joe Salem's defensive strategy to blitz every down against Nebraska ('83).
-
The Nebraska board lives.
-
you should have known us in the 90s

Agree.
For Wisconsin to have any chance, the defense will have to show out.
They MUST play 3 DL and skip the 2-4-5 look. Bama will gash the 2-4-5.
DL - Hills, Neal, Barten
LB - Peterson, Alliegro, Curtis
Dollar - Wohler
S - Zachman, Latu
CB - Hallman, Lucas

I have this vision that Badge receives an interoffice envelope every week at his home in FL and sole contents contain the one page injury report for Wisconsin.

I hope it's still at ONE page after today...

All I have to say about this game is that there should be a rule concerning B1G-SEC regular-season games:
SEC @ B1G may only be played in Nov or Dec.
B1G @ SEC may only be played in Aug or Sept.
-
This Wisconsin team is a LONG way away from being anything.
It feels like they are in for a long Nebraska-like road right now.

It’s a fine line. They have a good offensive line and believe it or not a decent defense. They are quarterback away from being a very good football team.
-
I disagree. The OC HAS to go.
By the way, the 2025 QB commit is the younger brother of the guy who sucked today, and he tore his ACL last night.
They have a 4* true freshman QB on the roster. PLAY HIM. NOW.
They have 2 4* true freshmen RB on the roster. PLAY THEM. NOW.
-
No shit. Phil Longo has to go. Shotgun on goal line plays too. WTF?

I think in the portal era, all non helmet schools are going to go through seasons like this where the roster doesn't align. Those Tier 2 and 3 schools were dependent on development, and you don't get that anymore.
-
Wisconsin is not a contender for the national championship while Alabama clearly is. Alabama is very talented and deep. I would not read too much into this loss.

Play the best guy today. The value and running someone out just because they’re young and not ready is pretty low.
-
I'd redshirt those 3 kids
this isn't the Badger's year anyway
build for the future

I wish they would.
Compare and contrast the defense, with and without Jake Chaney.

Luke Fickell on Tyler Van Dyke's Injury: "It Doesn't Look Good." (247sports.com) (https://247sports.com/college/wisconsin/article/tyler-van-dyke-injury-for-wisconsin-badgers-football-doesnt-look-good-per-luke-fickell-236227073/)
He and the Badgers looked pretty good yesterday until he got hurt. Then nothing looked good.
I'm trying to find four more wins to get to a bowl game.
