Still adjusting to this calendar of college football all the time. We've had apparently a record draught in central Ohio, but right now the winds are blowing and there is thunder in the distance. A bit of relief?
My wife went to Cleveland to visit her college roommate, so I am home with the kids, who are thankfully old enough to not want to bother me while football is on. I have a leg of lamb in the fridge, probably destined for the grill on Sunday. Tonight is taekwondo and the Hoosiers.

Nothing wrong with some bean soup.
Both the Horns and the Ags play tomorrow morning/early afternoon so we're keeping it easy with hot dogs, tater salad, pinto beans, and plenty of beer.
-
No Purdue to watch for me this weekend either. You know, MOST teams would want to take their bye later in the season, when they're banged up, when they need a little rest, and when they know who they are.
Nope. Purdue took it in week 2, when all the adversity they've faced is a cakewalk game against an FCS pastry where the starting quarterback completed 96% of his passes.
Very nice. I'm sure this week off will REALLY prepare us for a top-10 Notre Dame team coming into Ross-Ade next weekend :smiley_confused1:
-
But on to more exciting things. The menu!
Tonight is simple. Grilled pork tenderloin and a mushroom/spinach quinoa.
Tomorrow, we've having two of my wife's good friends over. So we're going to start with a caprese salad as an appetizer. Then we've got some nice filet mignon which I'll sous vide and sear, to be served with roasted red potatoes and grilled asparagus. Dessert TBD. Not sure if my wife has decided on that yet.
Sunday, we'll be doing Joanna Gaines' Fatayer, which I understand is a sort of Lebanese meat pie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatayer), along with a Lebanese salad. This will be a new one for us, trying it for the first time, so hopefully it works out nicely.

Send her up more often as right now it's raining pretty good and we are well behind average rain fall also

Meat and pie together, tough to beat that. I'm trying Meathead's lamb preparation, which finishes with a board sauce of rosemary, mint, and garlic. Tricky part will making sure I don't overcook it. Not sure on sides yet, definitely some potatoes of some sort. We'll see what's at the store.

I've done this one: https://www.food.com/recipe/leg-of-lamb-boneless-greek-style-34296
It was "fun" because I couldn't find a boneless leg of lamb so I got a bone-in leg from my local Persian market and had to debone it myself. That took some YouTube education and some spiffy knife work lol.
But it came out really nicely.
As with anything about overcooking, it wasn't an issue with a leave-in probe thermometer.

I heard taking the bone out is a real pain in the ass, so kudos. Costco typically has a boneless leg, and at 5 bucks a pound it was an easy choice compared to some of the beef cuts.

Cook it as is and eat around it - over the sink makes this easy-peasy

It wasn't terrible. It would have been without YouTube tho.

I'm still at taekwondo and the Hoosiers are up 35-0.

Apparently there is also an NFL game tonight in Brazil? Because why wouldn't there be

Why you taking taekwondo, your clients getting surly? Don't they have cops for that? Or does your wife not like your chili?

If it's in Brazil and televised only on Peacock, did it really happen?
And since it's only on Peacock, I'm currently watching FS1 waiting on some nerd-on-nerd crime to begin in Evanston (or wherever the hell Northwestern is playing tonight--it's not Brazil).

I'm tired of her beating me up
But really it's for my kids who needed to pick one active thing and they landed on that. The instructor is a grandmaster from Korea who I can't understand at all, but he's very cool

USC is retiring Reggie Bush and Caleb Williams jersey #'s. Caleb was the QB of a team that finished ranked 12th and another team that finished the season unranked and lost 5 games...

Same. Northwestern is playing in basically a high school stadium on the lake. Which... why do they need anything different?

Northwestern building that big fancy stadium is the ultimate lipstick on a pig.

This is the first time I've had the AC off in months. It's a bit humid feeling, but OK. My wife said something about salmon tacos, we have salmon (steelhead technically) left over from a dinner with the "kids". When one refers to a 41 year old stepson as "a kid", it's a sign.
He's a fine fellow indeed, my wife misses him a lot. We had a nice "last night" dinner for them at an Italian place that is highly regarded. Our server had an Italian accent but told me he was born in ATL.
Our "cable" (Directv) has dropped Disney, which means no ESPN or SECN which I guess means I may walk up to a sports bar for the 2 PM pastry game. Next week I'll be gone, they have a night affair with UK which could get interesting, than at Bama.

Very pleasant day here in MSP. Shorts and sweatshirt weather.
Gophers better put up that 60 spot on this 1-AA scrub that's coming in here today.

I hate Northwestern.
Oh come on, it was YOUR fault for having expectations of them...

The beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert...

Perfect football weather here 57° Sunny, breezy out of the North. Beats the hell out of 85°-95° we've seemingly had most summer. Gonna have some roasted grilled brats, raw onion, stadium mustard on seeded Brioche Bun

I have a Northwestern grad working for ME.
-
how many badgers?

None at the present.
I've had three over the years.

KU has a couple at a soccer stadium that looks q helluva lot better than NW set up and some at Arrowhead.
-
I have a Northwestern grad working for ME.
I had one work for me for many years, but he was from NW State, in Louisiana. Our director thought he was from NW main.
-
Never had any OSU, PSU, MN, MSU or Iowa grads.
Had one UM grad. Very smart. Couldn't design his way out of a paper bag, and we felt he never would. We cut him loose and advised him to go into academia.
Indiana does not offer engineering programs.
-
Sharkwater?
not in the plan but, I could slip up
-
There’s a 22 year old who just graduated in 4 years from Wisconsin with his masters in computer and electrical engineering living in my basement.
-
Kick him out.
-
Happy to have him home. He’s getting interviews coast to coast but nothing close so far.

Purdue is the engineering program in Indiana, obviously-- just ask bwar. I worked with an excellent Purdue engineer back in the day.
When I was a manager at AMD, I had several various engineering grads working for me. Stanford, Georgia Tech, UT, A&M.
The best engineer I ever worked with was from UT-San Antonio. The worst was from Stanford, but not the same guy as above.
-

If he's looking in High Tech it's a tough market but NVidia and AMD are both hiring big-time.
-
Currently our two best engineers are from Valparaiso and Wayne State.
I'd rather have a kid from UW-Platteville than UW-Madison, to be honest.
The smaller schools produce more practical engineers, and they are more useful out of the gate. Undoing too much academia is not easy.

It is truly glorious. Where you open up all the windows and it is comfortable when you go to bed and you are wrapped in blankets by the morning, with no responsibilities outside of ensuring the kids stay alive and the televisions are all tuned to football

Yup. My friend and coworker from UTSA was from a poor family from a small town in South Texas. Super smart but was working multiple jobs through high school, never had time to focus on academics and SATs and stuff, that could have gotten him into a "top" school. UTSA had small classes and tons of practical labs, not so many tenure track professors but lots of "guest lecturer" type profs from industry. He blew me away, I learned a lot from him.
-
Exactly.
-
UGA now offers main line engineering, which is odd to me. They always had Ag Eng back in the day, but why would they add civil and chemical?
Weird. Leave it to the Nats (who got ranked in football now, but I sense they lose to Syracuse today.).
-
Half hour to KO - if UT can keep Edwards and Loveland under wraps IMHO the hosts could get hammered. I don't see that offense sustaining drives and UT should be able to control the ball as the game drags on. Weasels lost too much to the draft and eligibility/graduation. Texas not so much and from what I've read they've replaced everyone with 4-5 stars

I've sensed UGA has been trying to up their academic profile for a while now.

Texas has been money on third down so far.

Just here today to watch Mdot go crazy
-
Ugly looking field goal attempt. Wolverines fortunate to get out of that giving up no points, let's see if they can run the ball
-
Wow that’s a big win. I don’t understand the consistent dropping back on third down, so hopefully sneak out of that and adjust.
That hold wasn’t needed to give Ewers time but was definitely a hold
-
Welp, nothing inspiring there
-
Youch. Michigan gonna have to change something up
-
No they're just fine
-
Total yards thus far is 127 to 8. UT just keep it up
-
How Michigan is handling Orji is just flat out stupid
-
Good drive though, gave the defense time to regroup.
-
Good drive though, gave the defense time to regroup.
Don't know if it'll help. Only thing that's slowed down UT on offense so far is a holding penalty.

-
Texas getting push no problems
Well when it’s 8 against 4, it’s not going to be an issue. That defensive formation was idiotic.
-
Welp
-
It just keeps getting better.
-
Yeah, this one might be over. And there's still 2 1/2 quarters left.
-
Great move. 3rd and 10 and just drop back in zone coverage.
-
They need to change the QB at the half. I've seen enough.
FYI, I think MDot is at the game. I'm pretty sure he mentioned he was going.
-
Bowling Green up 24-20 at PSU, halftime.
-
So glad Isaiah Bond transferred from Alabama. Two catches for 40 yards thus far doesn't sound like much, but Bond's threat capability has replaced the Longhorns losing Xavier Worthy. Michigan's secondary having to account for Bond's deeper routes has opened up the rest of the field. For example, TE Gunnar Helm's production of 6 catches 76 yards 1 TD would not've come easily without Bond eating up so much attention.
Texas takes over inside Michigan territory.

How could anyone see this kid and start him at qb? This team is a joke. Play calling is bad. Defensive formations dumb.. and they’re soft.

Mildly hungover after a friend’s birthday. Not enjoying that.

While this game is far from over, I think hubris has blinded the Michigan fans from seeing this was going to be all Texas.
My prediction was 35-17, Texas. I’m wondering if I gave Michigan too much credit.
-
Michigan’s talent offset some terrible play calling last year. Theres a reason JJ never looked like a star, yet was drafted 9 and looked pretty darn good preseason. For Michigan fans, it was the most frustrating part of a great season. Like running the ball something like 22 straight times. Some will argue it was to wear down the defense.. I argue it was idiotic and there was zero creativity. They won’t overpower everyone this year and there’s too many smart coaches that will laugh at the mindset of running the same garbage plays over and over.
-
PJ seems hell bent on turning the brain of his kicker to mush. Missed a long FG at the wire last week, then the QB eats a 15 yard sack to bring up a 55 yard FG attempt to end the half, which he misses.
Kicking game is a problem.

This from CBS Sports
The Ducks allowed 10 total sacks during the previous two seasons, but through the first two games of the 2024 campaign, they've allowed seven. Oregon lost star center Jackson Powers-Johnson to the NFL Draft, and the early struggles can be chalked up to a new-look unit that is already dealing with injuries and depth issues, particularly at center.

... and NIU. I recall a few seasons where NIU was pretty decent. They got paid $1.4 mil to beat their hosts.
Florida also won, worth noting.

Combination of some pretty good coaching hires, and some somewhat favorable conditions at the school.

How do you rank the 4 Dakotas?

#20 Arizona is losing to their in-state FCS opponent in the second half.
Last weekend I was throwing fits all first half about Arizona’s defense giving up a ton of yards to New Mexico. This time it's the offense I'm screaming at, down 10-6 at halftime to NAU.
The Wildcats defense did their job though, holding NAU to under 200 total yards of offense, and shutting out the Lumberjacks in the 2nd half while the offense put together a few decent drives to win 22-10.
The concerning thing is that what was supposed to be a strong OL was consistently overwhelmed all night by NAU’s pass rush which consisted of NAU moving their outside LB next to the DEs to bring 6 men to the LoS. That killed Arizona’s pass blocking all night.
Meanwhile, up in Tempe…
Oregon tied with 39 sec left. What's happened. I am at asu-miss state game and missing this
Arizona State looked like a brand new program in Coach Kenny Dillingham’s 2nd year, building a 27-3 lead against Mississippi St. The Bulldogs mounted a comeback after ASU stalled out several drives but behind RB Cam Skattebo who rushed for 265 yds, the Sun Devils held on and are now 2-0.
Flipping between these two games, Tempe sure looked sweltering. 🥵

Next week is going to be very painful and ugly.

Blech I hate having only 8 conference games. Next 2 weeks the Horns are playing UTSA and ULM.
-
My goal is to schedule at least 10 P4 opponents each year. That leaves two pastries, and NIU.

It was comfortable at the start of the game because there was a nice breeze. The breeze stopped and humidity went up and it was quite hot. Kept thinking about leaving early because of ASU dominating, but stayed along with about half the crowd and watch Miss State make a game of it

Having grown up in FL and lived in AZ for 15 years, I set the equivalency between the 2 at about 15 degrees.
85 in the muggy southeast = about 100 in the desert
But yes, when it's humid in the desert, that changes. However, 'humid in the desert' usually means like 30% humidity, not 90% like in the SE.
Basically, as long as ASU plays evening games, it's fine for teams from the southeast.
-
We're in the "feels like" 110 zone yesterday and today.
We still sit outside, but not in the sun. The pool comes in handy, of course.
Some relief will come tomorrow or Tuesday.

Been here for 11 years. As long as it is below 110 it is generally bearable. I will say that when I officiated Friday night, my uniform was probably the wettest it had ever been. Usually I wait to wash the uniform until Saturday, but I got home and immediately put it in the washing machine. Probably the worse Friday night as far as combo of heat and humidity since moving here. I had great hope earlier in the week, played golf, barely over 90 and a nice breeze, was a great day.
And yes, I will take 110 at 10% humidity over 85 with 85% humidity any day of the week. I was in Ohio in July and was quite miserable with the humidity.

Alabama did lose one of their better LB's to a targeting call in the second half of that South Fl. game last night, so Wisconsin at least has that going for them.

My buddy wife and kids moved to Phoenix and he calls BS. 65 right now sunny and cool. Ya muggy much of the summer but friends FIL has to stay inside in AZ or breathing difficulties ensue

Why did UDub lock horns with Eastern Michigan? Just because you are in the Big Ten, it doesn't mean that you have to start scheduling MAC teams. It's nonsensical.

FL always gets back down to 75-80 at night, no matter how hot it gets during the day. That's another big difference....it can be 100 degrees in AZ at midnight. It's dumbfounding.
-
The weather here has "turned", not that it can't still be hot in the PM. My wife is getting her sweaters ready.

Washington’s old coach used to coach at EMU under the current head coach there. So I’m guessing that was the link.

Don't get into that fantasy crap - I'm in a survivor pool - just win, baby
Next week is going to be very painful and ugly.

Kentucky went more than two quarters without completing a pass Saturday. For the game, the number of Wildcat completions (6) nearly was topped by the number of sacks allowed on Kentucky QBs (5). Against a South Carolina team that barely eeked out a one-score win over Old Dominion in Week 1, Kentucky got absolutely steamrolled.
The offensive line was horrifying, allowing 11 tackles for loss. At one point, QB Brock Vandagriff was so steamrolled that UK ran the ball on 17 consecutive plays. Not that it helped much. Kentucky finished the game with almost as many penalties (11) as first downs (13).

A&M was very close to having Kentucky's coach...
-
UK has had some "tough" football teams of late under Stoops. They would battle in the lines pretty well. But that loss to USCe did not illustrate that point, and they face another probably better opponent this Saturday.
-
What Stoops has done has been great overall. But their O-line work since the longtime position coach died has been somewhat lacking.
-
Dallan Hayden averaged 6 yds a carry
RUSHING
CU: Hayden 5-32,
RECEIVING
CU: Hayden 2-27,
Too bad the O-Line is BAD
and oh, by the way Cheddar prefers to go downfield to the WRs.
and Prime Prefers to have his son sling it

Yeah, I really didn't care for the hire. Lots of people here apparently felt the same way.

Yeah it seemed wildly unpopular on Texags.
I don't know that Elko is any better but personality fit and culture are important, and Elko was already a known commodity in College Station from that perspective.

Was there a popular name who also wanted the job?

Stoops seems like a good coach ... for Kentucky.
They might just have lost too many players in their lines, USCe seemed to push them around a lot.
-
Was there a popular name who also wanted the job?
Oh Geez. There’s always a popular name, but the question is are they legit ?
Plus, we just fired a popular name. So there was kind of a backlash on hiring a big time name again, not to mention the money. There’s whispers that the unnamed Big Whigs ( no proof whatsoever ) already ponied up Jimbo’s cash and that is taken care of.
Who knows. But we’ve hired all sorts of coaches in the last 20 years, only to figure out that we’re pretty much the same team and program we fired RC Slocum for. Hell, let’s be real, RC would’ve never lost more than 6 games a season.

That search seemed really muted. There weren’t even any fantasy names thrown around.

I don’t even remember really. Just that there were legit reports of it being Mark Stoops, and then major backlash and crawfishing.
To be honest I felt like Jimbo was still our best choice. We made such a huge bet on him, why bail ?
Elko seems like a solid coach. The kind that wins 7-9 games per year, comes close to winning 11-12 games once every 6-8 years, but nothing special.
We will soon see. I often state that whatever a coach will be, he will be by year 3.
