Title: What-If Season Simulation (2004)
Post by: ELA on September 06, 2024, 02:18:36 PM
I've always done the What-If Bowl lineups, as to how the bowls would likely slot based on prior bowl lineups.

As I did last year, now that any semblance of college football as we all learned to love it was gone, I figured each season I would simulate a season alongside the actual season, using SP+

So it will be the teams' present abilities, but using the prior year schedule, conference affiliations, and bowl lineups.

I'll roll a dice and based on that jump back 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60 years.

Last year it came up 4, so I decided to reroll if it came up 4.  It came up 2, so 2004 it is.

2004 was a weird year for A&M.  All I really remember is that we had like 3-4 games where we had a chance to win very late in the game, and somehow ended up losing by a point or two, and we would have been in contention to win the Big 12.  I think we still ended up winning 9 games, with extremely close losses to OU and Texas Tech.  I do remember that Texas beat us, and it seems like Cedric Benson rushed for a bunch of yards in that game and we couldn't stop him.  And there is a faint memory of a 2 point safety that is extremely rare in CFB in that Texas game.

There is a meme that floated around the interwebs forever of Carl Torbush saying  "WOW!" because in our first game we got stomped by Urban Meyer and Utah where the safety bit on something and they had a long TD pass right over the DB's head or something.

I also seem to remember we played Tennessee in the bowl game and got smoked, even though we were favored.  Now I'm going to go look up that season and see how close I was.

OK, I got 2004 and 2005 mixed.  2006 we won 9 games.  2004 we won 7, but at least we didn't lose any 77-0 like the year before.

Actually, thinking back, after starting badly (41-21 to Utah that wasn't that close), the team settled down and won 6 in a row.  Aggie fans were really excited, because it seemed like we were finally seeing what the team was going to be be under Coach Fran now that he had "his players" in place.

We were actually set-up for a big showdown with #2 Oklahoma at Kyle Field.  For a bit of context, we beat #1 OU at Kyle in 2002, and took them to the wire in 2000 and nearly spoiled their undefeated season.  So everybody was anticipating a great game.

But, before the big game, we had to deal with a 2 win Baylor team that lost to UAB 56-14 and their head coach Guy Morriss.  The team came out flat, played like shit, and Baylor ended up tying at the very end.  Except they didn't tie, they went for two, and got it.  We lost 34-35.

The rumor was that College Game day was coming to Kyle Field for the OU game, but after losing to Baylor they instead didn't even leave the studio.  It was actually the first time in their history where they just stayed home.  *sigh* Before the Baylor game, we were ranked #16.  After Baylor, we were #22.  I have no idea what we would've been ranked had we won, but it ended up kinda spoiling the mood.

The OU game was indeed a thriller, but we ended up losing 35-42.  I only recall that we were doing really well and one of our better players fumbled a punt or kick-off near the goal line and OU recovered.  Up until that point we may have been winning.  It was a total fluke deal too for the most part, but it definitely changed the momentum and I don't think we recovered.

OU went on to play USC in the BCS Championship game, and got stomped.

We finally defeated Texas Tech and Mike Leach.

Lost to Texas 13-26, and then got stomped by Tennessee as I remembered.  As I recall, we were actually favored in that game (Cotton Bowl), but reports on game-day was all about how physically we didn't not match up well with Tennessee and they were right.  At the time, believe it or not, the Big 12 was still considered a very premiere conference, at least on par if not better than the SEC, so it really started reinforcing things to a lot of Aggies at how much superior the SEC was than the other conferences and that was about the time that it really started to show on the field and in the bowl games and rankings.

Anyways, I have no idea why I typed this long message, but I was just curious about what I remember from a football season from 20 years ago that was pretty unremarkable.

That game where Ced ran wild on the ag defense was 2003, in College Station.  I watched that game from a luxury suite at Kyle Field, owned by a friend of my i s c & a aggie wife's Aggie family.  I was very respectful, wore a black shirt with a small orange longhorn logo on it.  Only smiled and clapped quietly when the Horns did something good.  My gracious Aggie hosts were kind, and appreciative of my restraint.

Man I'll sacrifice a lot for free beer in a stadium suite. :)

I just looked it up. The 2004 game was more competitive than the score. We led at the half, 13-6. Both teams missed the XP. This game has the 1 point safety.  Very rare in CFB.

2004 season was lots of fun, other than the blasted sooner game.

Perhaps this replay will correct that flaw.
2004 was my season where I flipped fanhoods.

It was an absolute bonkers season.

Projected starting QB Drew Stanton was unavailable to start the season, after the staff used him in kick coverage in the previous Alamo Bowl, and he tore an ACL.  That resulted in a 1-2 start, with losses to Rutgers and Notre Dame, around a win over CMU.  Oddly the home game against Notre Dame wound up hosting Gameday, with almost no prior announcement, because Tennessee-LSU was postponed due to Katrina.

Game 4, Stanton was cleared, but was named the backup, because he hadn't practiced.  With Stanton on the sideline, MSU fell behind 20-7 at halftime to Indiana, so they put him in after halftime.  With Stanton under center, they outscored the Hoosiers 23-0 to win 30-20.

They lost in Iowa City, beat Illinois, then somehow absolutely throttled a top 15 Minnesota team in a rain storm, like 56-17.

Then came the Michigan game where Stanton separated his shoulder, and MSU wound up blowing a 17 point lead in the final 7 minutes with backup Damon Dowdell playing QB

With Stanton still out the following week, a loss to OSU was all but assured.  OSU scored on their first 3 drives to take a 17-0 lead in the 1st quarter.  Then MSU ran off 19 straight points, and a FG with 3:35 left gave MSU the 19-17 lead.  After going over 45 game minutes without scoring, OSU remembered they had Ted Ginn, and scored 2 50+ yard TDs in the final 2 minutes, and won 32-19.  IIRC they actually scored a third TD (maybe on a pick 6) that was called back for a penalty on the return.

Next came #4 Wisconsin, one of 4 10-0 teams in the nation, creating a potential BCS problem.  Again, no Stanton.  Once again Wisconsin went up 7-0 less than 2 minutes into the game.  But it was 14-14 in the middle of the 2nd quarter.  MSU stuffed Wisconsin at the 1, and then went 99 yards for a go ahead touchdown, then made a second goal line stand on the final play of the first half.  MSU opened the 2nd half with a surprise onside kick, and then put Stanton in the game, in a major surprise.  MSU outscored Wisconsin 28-0 and won 49-14.  MSU had 3 different players throw a TD pass, 3 different players record a rushing TD, and 3 different players catch a TD pass.  Plus they scored a special teams TD.  4 different players ran for 70+ yards, on a combined 408 yards on 38 carries (10.7 ypc).

So basically MSU seemed like a machine, as long as Stanton was in.  4-1 in games he finished, and 2 of the losses without him were close losses to Michigan and OSU.  So just Penn State and Hawaii stood between them and a bowl.  This was a 3-7 Penn State team that was tied for last in the Big Ten.  Instead MSU was -5 in turnovers, and Penn State scored 28 points in a quarter.  They didn't score that many points in a Big Ten GAME that year otherwise, and were held under 20 in 4 of 7.  Then they went out and played a meaningless game in Hawaii, where they put up 600 yards of offense, but were penalized for >200 yards, and lost 41-38.  I think that and Wisconsin suffering similar reffing on the island either the prior or next year, led to Barry Alvarez convincing the Big Ten to stop sending a team out there to end the year.

So plugging in the simulation for this week, there isn't a single game between ranked teams here.

Looked to see if maybe that wasn't the case in 2004, as some teams that were better then than they are in 2024.

Nope.  The ranked teams changed, but there were no games between ranked teams.  Only 17 ranked teams played that Saturday, only 15 played FBS opponents, and only 12 played BCS conference opponents.

So where did Gameday go that day?  Madison, for #20 Wisconsin hosting a Penn State team coming off a 3-9 season, and about to go 4-7.  It was actually turned out to be loss #8 in a 1-13 game Big Ten game losing streak over 2003 and 2004 for JoePa.  Wisconsin won 16-3 in a game that had only 1 TD, to go with 4 FGs, and less that 440 yards of TOTAL offense, including 72 rushing attempts for 2.7 ypc.  John Stocco got the win going 12-29 for 150 yds and 2 INTs, while Chris Ganter went 6-32 for 32 yards and a pick for Penn State.  Yuck.

Granted Matt Bernstein had 123 rushing yards for Wisconsin.  He had 197 rushing yards COMBINED for the rest of his career

#5 A&M vs OU next week. Maybe Coach Fran will run Jorvorskie Lane this time.

Still can’t believe we canned RC Slocum for Dennis Franchione.

I just realized. Wrong season. I was thinking 2006. 2002 our primo WR punt returner muffed a punt on like the 2 yard line, allowing ou to make what I recall was the winning score. Murphy was his name.

JLS ruined our 2004 season by putting backup QB Drew Stanton, who was slated to be the starter the following year, out there in punt coverage in the 2003 Alamo Bowl, and he tore his ACL.  Wasn't healthy til mid-October 2004

It's too bad we didn't get Miami-Tennessee in the Rose Bowl that year.  Tennessee was the only team that I think could have given Miami a game.

Big Ten was absolute trash that year, I think that's the worst the conference ever was, 2 years after the best it ever was (1999)

Man.....I agree, obviously.

The 1st of getting owned by Nick Saban.  We knocked out their starting QB (Rohan Davey) and RB (LaBrandon Toefield), and Matt Mauck came in an ran about 25 QB dives to win it for them.  Never stopped it, never adjusted on defense.

An all time bed crapper by the Vols.  That one still hurts more than any other loss in Vol history.

Probably Tennessee's best, most talented roster...EVER.

If he has put him in at QB, that would have at least made a little sense

Dang, a January 1st and 2nd clean sweep by the SECSECSEC.  If you count the Ole Miss win over the ags as an SEC win since they're the legacy SEC team.

So will Texas keep up the trend against this juggernaut Ohio State team?

I haven't seen Sark say anything about it, but it's definitely true that nobody's giving Texas a shot.  The mediots are convinced it's gonna be a blowout.

Which is fine with me.  8 days of listening to how badly Ohio State is gonna whip 'em, sure won't hurt Texas' attitude coming into this game.  Exact same thing happened before the 2006 Rose Bowl.

Steve Sarkisian: OSU 'Best Team in CFB,' Texas 'Massive Underdogs' in Cotton Bowl | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors | Bleacher Report

(https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10149466-steve-sarkisian-osu-best-team-in-cfb-texas-massive-underdogs-in-cotton-bowl)ESPN FPI gives Texas a 51% chance of winning.    The only prediction I have heard live was Booger McFarland- who picked the Horns.

a Spread of 5.5 (last time I checked) is no blowout.   But keep working it-- it is a good angle LOL.

"They're both big physical players," Sarkisian said. "They have length, they have speed, they have playmaking ability on the ball. They have really big catch radiuses. They've got the scheme to go with it, with Coach [Chip] Kelly and Coach [Ryan] Day, and they've got a quarterback who delivers on the ball. So you add all that up, these guys are impactful players that are real issues and we're going to have a hard time guarding 'em."

Tons of mediots picking Buckeyes in a blowout, it's all over the web, I don't really care to spend time to find links.  I know Colin Cowherd was one of them, but there's tons more.

Sarkisian pulling a Lou Holtz or not, the team that barely scraped past crappy B12 Arizona State is going to be hearing all about how they're unworthy to be on the same field as the mighty Buckeyes who've rolled Tennessee and Oregon so far.  8 straight days of that, just like the leadup to playing against USC's "Greatest College Football Team of All Time."

I don't disagree, after watching Texas' struggles in the post-season so far, I'd say that's a reasonable take, which is why it's so pervasive.

I don't think any of that's going to matter, anyway.  Ohio State is a better football team right now, playing better football against teams that I believe are better opponents.

We simply aren't going to see the same Buckeye team that lost to Michigan.  If we do, it'll be an easy Texas win, but that's now how it's going to play out.

Easy there tiger.  Just having fun. If you can’t see the gamesmanship ( WHICH IS TOTALLY NORMAL FOR A COACH TO MOTIVATE HIS TEAM) in the “ I hope we can guard them” statement- then topic over.    Unless you believe that loaded with NFL talent team of his has no plan to cover the OSU WRs.

I think it's going to be the toughest assignment they've had all year.  Just look at recruiting rankings, NFL rosters, and NIL expenditure-- Ohio State is one of only a few teams that have MORE talent than Texas, but the Buckeyes DO have more talent than Texas.

I have always said- it’s not how “ good you are” but rather what you are capable of.

We have seen what OSU is capable of on both ends ( good and bad).

Same with the horns.   It comes down to that game.  Texas will be the most talented, capable team OSU has faced.   Size, speed, power and skill.

I believe if both teams bring their “A” game, Texas wins.
