This is going to be a weird season, I think. I can barely remember who is in what conference, and this 12 game thing will be weird.

Damn 847 moving us around who does he think he is Dictator,Grand Poobah, Administrator?

I’m slightly annoyed, because there is a supposedly excellent local barbecue truck that I’ve been meaning to check out, but they’re doing a special collaboration of Indian food this week.
And all that sounds amazing, I really wanna try your barbecue first. I also might be too busy actually make it down this weekend but this seems like a nice idea until those things came up.

Indian barbecue? Well I'm intrigued at least

I don't know what sort of food to make this week. It's been super hot this week and I think they are forecasting rain on Saturday.
-
Programming note for tonight: a delayed start is likely in Minnepolis.

daughter's new to her vehicle took hail damage a few nights ago in Minne
she's a bit distressed
-
We'll probably go out to eat tomorrow evening and then come home to watch the MSU and UW games.
Haven't figured out Saturday yet. I have a large pack of wings in the freezer though. I need to get some peanut oil.
-
I'm going to the golf course for a 12:30 tee time this afternoon
Should be home by 6 to watch
Probably a burger
Friday I'll be on the golf course until about 6.
Not sure if I'll stop to eat on the way home or not
Saturday I'll be in Lincoln
Probably sausage and pretzel at the Bierhaus Maisschäler where my daughter works
-
I don't know what sort of food to make this week.
Tonight is going to be pizza night. Will likely have the game on while I'm in the middle of my draft for the insane 20-team fantasy football league. Ordering pizza because the draft gets in the way of cooking.
Tomorrow we're going out for a date night. Haven't decided where. Might be our local wine bar and then the Italian place next door. Might be a local restaurant we like that we already have a gift card we've been meaning to use.
But for the weekend, it's going to be steak and baked potato on Saturday for CFB, smash burgers on the Blackstone and some totchos on Sunday for NFL, and then crab cakes on the Blackstone with an arugula salad on Monday for MNF.
Pretty sure you can all tell this is NOT my weekend with the kids. After running an infirmary around this house last weekend and all the way up until Wednesday morning, I'm looking forward to NOT dealing with it. Which of course probably means that I'm going to catch whatever they had and ruin my weekend.

That sucks.
If it's not TOO major, those paintless repair outfits work pretty well.

I suggested she call the insurance company

We are going west of Columbus to camp out for the Holiday weekend. Taking two cars so I can drive back on Saturday to Watch OSU.

There is no NFL this weekend. Starts next week on Thursday.

Oh. I guess I should have known that.
I was just assuming that since the end of preseason was last weekend that it'd start this weekend.
-
I don't know what sort of food to make this week.
Going to finish the chicken marsala, mashed potatos w/garlic,green bean cassarole with peach pie Cindy made yesterday - one of my favorite combos. Sammich and suds over the sink gonna have to wait
-
I suggested she call the insurance company
Gonna sue Mother Nature?
-
Tonight I'm gonna watch my high school alma mater kick off its season against our cross-town hated rival in the annual "Taco Shack Bowl." I will be eating tacos and likely drinking margaritas, of course.
No cooking on Saturday, we're taking my parents out for their 60th wedding anniversary dinner so I'll probably catch the Longhorns' 2:30 game at a bar near the restaurant, then after dinner my i s c & a aggie wife has informed me she'd like to watch the Ag-Notre Dame game so we'll likely end up back at that same bar for the evening.
Sunday-- sleeping in!

On the plus side you do get a college game Sunday and Monday

It does! The chicken tikka and lamb chops sound great. Maybe at some point.
-
There's a really tasty food truck here in Austin that does Indian/Texas BBQ Fusion. It's pretty great.

That sounds pretty great. Our food trucks here have largely disappeared, I'm not sure why. A food hall opened near us, maybe that's it? They are kind of like food truck food.
Now I'm hungry.
I can't seem to lose weight.
-
What kind of dishes do they serve?
They do a BBQ brisket or chicken tikka masala over a spicy rice, a brisket naan roll (like a brisket hot pocket made from housemade naan), and some other stuff that I don't recall exactly. Great flavor combinations.
-
A place we like called Tabla serves this for lunch, we get sag instead of whatever that whitish thing is. It's called thali saag lamb/shrimp/chicken. I like getting a bunch of small dishes with different flavors.
They also offer Louis XIII for $195 an ounce.
-
Indian food is the most slept on and underrated cuisine in America. you all have made me hungry now.

Yup, I love it. My 16yo daughter likes to cook and has learned to make a really good butter chicken. We have her cook for us at least once per week when her schedule allows.
-

Yep. And the PGA Tour Championship on Sunday.
I was thinking them daft for not finishing up the FedEx Cup Playoffs before the opening weekend of the NFL, but it turns out it was me that was daft not knowing when the season starts lol.
-

I've got something they can have for $195 an ounce

I'm not a food snob by any stretch, and I've never been to a "nice" Indian food place here, but all Indian food I've had in the US has been awful compared to what I had in England.
That's what people miss about British food. British food isn't great, but they have amazing Indian food
-
We had Indian for lunch, I ordered the branzina, it was superb, I though, $24. I have had excellent Indian in England as well, but I think the two places near us are just as good. I my wife the lamb thali saag, which she always orders, but she really liked the fish I gave her as well.
I suspect a lot of "us" think of Indian as "cheap buffet lunch", because that was my first exposure to it as well. And some folks think it's all curry all the time, not perhaps understanding India, like the US, has very different food regions.
-
Yup I've had excellent Indian in the US.
For sure it's a specialty in the UK, though, and much better than... well, pretty much anything else you can get there.
-
We stayed with friends of my wife's north of London about an hour and that lady could really cook. I think "British food" at home can be superb, this was anyway.
Other than that, I've never had "British food" that was memorable or great. We had lunch a couple times in Scotland and then Ireland and it was ... not memorable. We stayed in Southhampton two nights before a cruise and had really good ... Indian food. We had lunch at a pub that was decent.

Yeah, I think it gets a bad rep that it's "bad". I don't dislike it, a lot of it is good comfort food. It's just not memorable.

Oddly I've never had "cheap" Indian buffet. I've eaten at decent US Indian restaurants, and I've always left thinking I could have gone elsewhere
-
Oddly enough, you really COULD have gone elsewhere.
-
Yeah, which is why I don't think I've gone to an Indian restaurant probably since 2012? I distinctly remember my wife craving it when she was pregnant with our first

Gophers are missing some D1 talent from the west?

his kid is an awesome QB and Travis Hunter is a high 1st rd pick who could play WR or CB in the NFL imo, and Horn is an NFL draft pick WR as well, unfortunately for Prime....the rest of that team fucking sucks and they are god awful on the lines of scrimmage.

Our long national nightmare is over.

plenty of talent across the 2-deep there
Prime's coaching sucks

Gophers are gonna want that sequence back.
I hope they don't want those points at the end.

plenty compared to NDSU
-
CU is proof that is all about the OL. There is plenty of skill position talent, but when the lines aren't getting any push, or act like a matador in pass protection, it doesn't matter.

100%. Game always has been and always will be about the LoS.

Speaking of coaching, this is the second illegal formation penalty of the night on the Gopher punt unit. That is all coaching. This one offset a blind side block foul on the return and cost the Gophers 40 yards of field position.
-
Hey Nubbz. Our boy Haden not getting much run so far with the Buffs.
5 carries for 15.

I messed up a gambling thing and think I'm gonna miss out on $150. Eff.

PJ is so odd. There are many things about his style and coaching that are not all that good.
But he's basically always good enough or better.

Gophers end the half strong. This one is looking like a Sickos Committee special that neither team can get control of.

Yeah this has to be the worst Thursday/Friday opener in a while. I think UNC-Minnesota might be the only P4 matchup on either night

Cheater Buffs. They also got away with a 5th down a few years back.

Hunter is pretty good
-
Hunter is pretty good
he's actually amazing. he could be a high 1st round pick at CB or WR. but I think Deion needs to let him just pick one position and stay at it. he's never going to get as good as he could be at one position having to play both and he's opening up himself to major risk of having serious injury with the amount of snaps he plays. he's probably a good bit better right now at WR than he is at CB and he's just not that physically filled out/big yet- plus WR's make more money in the NFL and typically have longer careers than defensive backs- I'd just keep him at primarily WR full-time and only sprinkle him in at DB sparingly.
-
Deion doesn't give a shit about that kid or any others on his roster
just himself and his sons
-

probably accurate.
NDSU just scored and missed the 2point. 31-26 Colorado, 2:19 left.
Let's get a stop NDSU.
-
gotta turn the head around....crazy to me that the defenders don't just....turn their head.

oh well, I was hopin the Buffs would come to Lincoln next week w/o a loss

yup, just can't make contact

WTH? Official starts the clock while the ball is still in the hands of the ref and hasn't even been set in position yet? Golderned cheater Buffs.

The starting QB for UNC is the son of longtime Vikings QB Brad Johnson. And he's currently being carted off with an ugly knee injury.

There's a contradiction with Travis Hunter. It's risky for him to play almost every snap of the game, splitting between WR and CB. But it's precisely because of this overextension and the attention it garners that Hunter is projected as a Top 5 draft pick. Guess who else played both sides of the ball? Dieon. Either he doesn't care or he uniquely identifies Travis Hunter as capable of playing both sides. No other coach would do this - they focus on specialization and limiting snaps.
Speaking of Dieon and coaching, the Buffaloes defense noticeably stepped up in the 2nd Half. After allowing 341 yds and a ton of ToP in the first half, Colorado's defense held ND St to about 100 yards until ND St started playing catch up after Colorado took a two-possession lead and ultimately held on 31-26. It's a second half adjustment indicative of advanced coaching.
In the UNC-Minnesota game, it looks like Minnesota is facing another year without much of an offense. Total Offense nationally ranked 122nd in 2023, 64th in 2022, & 99th in 2021. Piddly offenses are becoming the norm under Pj Fleck. Gophers leading the Tar Heels 14-13 early in the 4th.

Didn't watch the Goophs/Heels game but a few of comments on the Buckeye board about it
"They had enough time to get the ball closer or even go for a TD but they called a few too many running plays instead of throwing the ball. They're never going to win up there until they fully embrace the forward pass. I'd rather try to score a TD or make it a chip shot FG instead of relying on any college kicker to make one from over 40 yards out."
"PJ runs a slow developing run play that results in a holding penalty to take the Gophs out of FG range. Then after re-entering FG range, he has his RB take the ball towards the hash mark his kicker tugged it from. His kicker tugs it again and misses. Kick would have been good from the near hash or center of the field."
"We are talking about PJ here. Another coach you question how good he is at X's and O's. But he inspires players with his enthusiasm. What more is needed!"
"And he sprints up the sideline between quarters. How do you turn that down??"
-
PJ Barnum is not a good coach. He's a clown, and he doesn't even want to be in MPLS based on him chasing open jobs when they come up.

Unfortunately, it did happen exactly as the video shows.
PJ'S act is getting thin. He's got the same offense now that had Jerry Kill on the hot seat. And let's not discuss the play calling on the final series. Not taking at least one shot to the end zone is malpractice.
Sure, they'll win the next two games against a 1-AA tomato can and something called Nevada. But then Iowa comes here three weeks from now. And their defense is a country mile better than anything you saw tonight. Everyone knows that is going to be a 10-9 pissing contest. You damn well better figure out how to be the 10.
-
mn had no biz losing that game. pj is very meh & barely so. he's been getting by on the "strength" of the west. i assume the mob is growing up there.
-
I only saw part of the Minnesota game then fell asleep but damn that sucks for them. I read the recap and they had so many chances.
UNC's go-ahead FG came on a "drive" of negative yardage off of a Gopher fumble.
Then when they got the ball back they went back ahead with their own FG but they had been deep in the RZ with a first and goal at the 10. A TD there most likely wins it.
Even after UNC took the 19-17 lead that would be the final with >2 minutes to go, the Gophers still had multiple chances:
A DPI and a 20 yard pass set them up 1st and 10 at the UNC 40. Two plays later they rushed all the way to the 18 (35 yard FG from there) but a holding penalty pushed them back to the 42 (59 yard FG).
They picked up a first down and had a shot from inside the 30 but missed a 47 yard FG from the 29 as time expired.

North Dakota State is no joke. #2 in FCS.
Badgers play South Dakota next week. #5 in FCS.
Can't overlook them with Bama coming in week 3.

agreed. if Travis Hunter gets called for OPI just once on the half dozen times he committed it or if that Colorado defender is called for targeting at the end of the game on the final drive, Colorado probably loses.
Nebraska is now a 7 point favorite vs Colorado.

Speaking of beer, we were coming back from Buckhead at 6:30 PM and "traffic" was as you might imagine not good, so I detoured and we went to Sweetwater Brewery and had a pizza sitting outside. Their pizza is quite good I thought. They have maybe 30 kinds of beer, I had some "American red ale" that was tasty. It started getting crowded a bit by the time we left. They had the Braves on one channel and the Buffs on another and something else inside.

Do you see a path to the postseason for this Gopher team? I was just looking at the schedule and it's certainly not easy by any stretch. My thoughts are below. Red is a loss, blue is a tossup, green is a win.
Thoughts? Does PJ survive this outcome?

i would consider rutgers a game they could win but they're not running all those toss ups, probl split them so 4-8. they're bleeped.
i guess iowa should be toss up too. any team that scores 10pnts a game is always beatable.

I'm not firing a coach in August, but past results are an indicator of future performance. And the results as of late are not pretty. PJ survives it, but the bilge pumps are running at full blast. More importantly, there are noo signs that PJ is going to be able to move the ball against living, breathing defenses. Add in a long history of issues in the kicking game, and his seat starts heating up soon.
Actually, don't be surprised if the drums don't start pounding sooner. The Vikings are going to be hideous, but the Twin Cities media loves Kevin OConnell and won't turn their ire on him. Not while PJ is bleeding in Dinkytown.

Looking forward to seeing how Wisconsin and MSU look tonight. Yes- not world beater opponents, and yes, typically the defenses are way ahead of the offenses this early in the season, but it’s still Big Ten football!

Lots of empty seats in Sparty stadium.

MSU is off to a slow start. They are in a scoreless tie with FAU.

I know, OSU always gets dinged for letting teams hang around early. So it's fun to do the same thing to others.
Sparty only up two, halfway through the first quarter.

Jonathan Smith leaving Oregon State, his alma mater, has got to be pretty rare (after a successful season). You could probably define the exact line between haves (liberally defining it) and have-nots based solely on programs that can keep a HC alum vs programs that can't.
It would be an interesting exercise to vote on that - those fringe programs.

FAU: let's run a reverse draw, play-action to no one. Ready? Break!

He's not a QB (yet?). An athlete who takes the snaps.

I dont know how he got this far throwing the ball like that. Same slot as Randle El and Tebow, but kind of like batting stances they used to be all over the place until we started teaching uniform motions because we realized how (at best) inefficient or (at worst) dangerous those odd mechanics were
-
Nice to see Melusi healthy for Wisconsin.
-
Darius Snow still around. 4* legacy recruit who had multiple season ending injuries. Has to be in his 6th year, and is a shell of who he was supposed to be. Tried to retire, but was convinced to come back and that his scholarship would be honored, even if he could just be a special teams guy. He also. does all of the social media edits

I think first year coaches don't quite follow the playbook. They have more confidence in saying to go out there and make the first down.

What arm slot issue?
I mean, he clearly had a throwing mechanics issue. That was undeniable. He was also surrounded by elite talent, and a playbook built to his abilities. Im not saying Chiles cant overcome it, but the coaches dont seem to recognize he has it

MSU putting up less points than they did last year with Connor Stallions calling out the plays for CMUs decense is not a great look
-
Weird half for UW.
Drive finishing had some issues, but all three were on the long side. Not enough big plays, but a lot of moving the ball. WMU is frankly moving it too well, with one long TD drive to show for it.
-
apparently, Wisconsin is working on the passing game
the running game is good, the passing game needs work
they are getting plenty of work
more passes than runs in the first half

FAU sucks. A lot. Sparty got some serious issues this season, methinks. Like I get it, it's week 1 but that OL looked pretty bad vs a very poor opponent, FAU really really sucks. I don't know why Sparty coaches insist on playing Nate Carter at RB so much when his back-up Lynch-Adams is clearly WAY better than him. By the way why does Carter stand straight up in the backfield like that? He looks like he's built like a brick shit house but he runs so upright, goes down so easily on first contact and just looks....slow. I was shocked at how bad Aiden Chiles was to be honest. You can see the obvious physical talent and he played very well as a true freshman last season in spots and you just figured he'd improve in year 2 seeing as how his head coach, QB coach, and OC came with him to Sparty- it wasn't like he was going to a new offensive scheme/system he'd have to learn- he already knows it. Chiles was just misfiring everything, short, behind, throwing deep balls 20 yards over the WR's heads. Looked like Joe Milton out there.

I do kind of wonder if we are reaching a point where the analytics do not account for the lack of talent. college football used to be a game of offensive variance. A lot of sports used to have more variance, but college football specifically. The analytics have convinced us of the most efficient ways to play. Those metrics are not incorrect, but in a sport with 130+ teams, you have to be able to adjust to your roster, and it does not seem like coaches are able to do that

Because coaches dont coach anymore, they just scheme. Chiles has a ton of talent, but his throwing motion is broken. I don't understand how he got this far with it. Maybe he was just so talented that coaches were scared to fix it. Im the pitching coach for my sons travel baseball team. We dont have a kid who is going to be a college pitcher, let alone a P4 #1 starter, like Chiles is. But I still work mechanics with every kid. Im good with some variance, but you need a repeatable motion, and Chiles has the same arm drop elbow sling that Randle El and Tebow had. Hopefully he figures it out like they did, but defenses are way smarter now.
Thats a long term issue though. Short term is that the OL is a mess.
The big positive is how good the defensive front looked. That was the major issue on that side of the ball, and they looked pretty good. I actually think the refs ignored a lot of holding calls, which made MSUs OL look less bad than they were, but I think MSUs front forced a lot of uncalled holding calls. Linebacker has a ton of depth. Secondary looked fine

they definitely looked improved in the front 7 on defense. not sure how much of that was a function of the competition they were playing as FAU doesn't have the OL talent of say Ohio State or Oregon- and their QB just couldn't throw the football. But the defense was very good for Sparty vs an inferior opponent- and that is what you want in these games- for the defense to make plays and swarm and shut down an inferior opponent. And they did that even with Chiles and their offense trying to repeatedly go 3 and out and give the game away to FAU.

also: the penalties for Sparty were atrocious. coaches have to clean that up because it'll cost you in B1G play.
schedule ain't easy.
@Maryland, Ohio State, @Boston College (that QB is a pain rushing the football), @Oregon, Iowa, @Michigan.
-
Wisconsin has their hands full.
-
Yeah, the penalties were the most concerning thing to me, aside from the OL play. New staff, freshman QB. I think people were overzealous with the offense. Granted 16 points is awful. But allowing 10 to a Tom Herman offense is a job well done, except for how much harder they made it on themselves with penalties.
-
Wisconsin has their hands full.
Embarrassing that MSU couldnt find a place for a legacy player like Hallock. He looks like the best player on the field

Western Michigan opens with Wisconsin and Ohio State.
Tough slate.
-
Wisconsin has no identity anymore. Every team looks the same, so you default to talent. Wisconain has 8-4 talent, and theyll probably go 8-4
Harbaugh is a douche, but he zigged, which allowed a 10-2 talent roster to win an NC. No other coach has the balls to do it, because if you lose doing what everyone does, you can blame the roster. If you zig with a 10-2 roster, and go 7-5, its on you. You dont go contrary just for the sake of it, but lean into an identity.

yeah idk about all that. maybe if you're talking offensive skill talent but even that is debatable and really only applies to WR's which were just meh. JJ McCarthy was just a top 10 NFL draft pick QB. Colston Loveland is a surefire 1st rounder TE. Blake Corum was just drafted in the 3rd round and was about as good of a college RB as one could possibly be. He was basically Mike Hart 2.0 but more jacked/built and with 4.5 speed instead of 4.75 speed. Edwards was the most talented offensive player on that entire roster and he didn't really do jackshit last year except for Penn State and the Washington games.
Jeem's ground and pound style honestly only worked because of the defense he built, and Jeem mostly definitely had 15-0 talent last year on defense. His DT rotation was insane. Mason Graham is going to be a top 10 pick barring injury. Kenneth Grant is going to be a 1st round pick barring injury. Kris Jenkins was just drafted 2nd rd. Rayshaun Benny is very underrated and could find himself drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft if he can return to form from injury. Their EDGE room wasn't that far behind and they rotated snaps almost equally between all 4 of them. Jaylen Harrell was just drafted, Braiden McGregor only really played 1 season at Michigan because injuries derailed his career- and he probably should've been drafted just based on him flashing in the playoff and his upside alone- and he was just one of the best defensive players in fall camp and in pre-season for the NY Jets- a team that is absolutely loaded on defense and made their 53 man roster as a UDFA. Derrick Moore and Josaiah Stewart should both have really good seasons barring injury and get drafted. Their 3 ILB rotation from last year will all get drafted once Ernest Hausmann goes pro and gets drafted and he will because that guy is a dude. Will Johnson is a lockdown #1 CB who would've been the first corner taken in the 2024 draft if he was eligible for the draft. Mikey Sainistril was the best nickel in the country last year and a 2nd rd pick and already making rave reviews in Washington. Rod Moore at FS would've been a 2nd rd pick if he had declared for the draft instead of came back and tore his ACL in spring ball. CB Josh Wallace just made the LA Rams 53 man roster as a UDFA. SS Makari Paige will have a shot at gettin drafted after this year. Keon Sabb transferred to Bama but he played a ton for them last year in their safety rotation and that's a future NFL draft pick safety too. They were pretty loaded on defense in '23.

I end my Purdue boycott and now I don't even get the game! Bastards.

I walk over to a sports bar when UGA isn't on one of my channels. I drink a couple beers, order some wings, have a bit of fun. The last time there was a big Wisconsin contingent present, they were pretty fun, then they left and the Ohio Staters were numerous (losing to that team up N).
Obviously, it's going to be a pastry opponent if UGA isn't on my channels.

The game comes on at 9 AM local here. Not gonna start at the bar that early.
We are going to head up to Long Beach today to install a cabinet my wife's friend bought, and then go with them to a local brewery.
Then back home to watch football and cook steaks.
-
Sounds like a plan. Our son and his GF are coming to visit tomorrow (from SF). Then they are off to Italy for some reason. This is technically my step son, but he is a very fine fellow all around. It's my wife's birthday in a few days, and then mine (we'll be in Istanbul, it's a zero day for me). "Ben" isn't much of a CFB fan, but he knows the game, he went to U. of Cincy back when. He asked for steak one night and steelhead trout another and a trip to Fox Bros. BBQ. Works for me.
They usually go out to a bar hearabouts at night, later than I can manage, and then get up late the next day. I'm going to send them to a Persian restaurant in an old house they dehabbed called "The Castle", they have a pretty neat bar there. They went to the 11th Street pub last time they were here and saw Charles Barkley sitting in the back nursing a drink, I think he was here for an NBA game. The barkeep said he came there when he was in town, and folks let him be.

Having a beer and a burger at my favorite sports bar in Morgantown. Heading over to the stadium shortly.
Hope everybody’s favorite team wins today.

Dad is visiting from Arizona this Labor Day weekend, staying with my brother about 40 miles up the road. They are running errands all morning. Will eventually drive up, and they’ll be airing games all day. Starting with Penn St Vs West Virginia. Around 6pm, will head back down to a nearby sports bar for a Wildcats Alumni viewing event. Arizona kicks off late Vs New Mexico. Can’t stay out too late - early flight tomorrow.
-
My wife was supposed to take the kids to her brother's football game, but they are still in the house. Hope they don't expect anything from me today

I've got two TVs going in the living room, College Gameday on one and EPL futbol on the other. Let's Go!
-
Nick Saban is the best thing going on College GameDay. That line he had about not paying NIL or you're shit out of luck was pretty damn funny. I love McAfee's podcast but sometimes he's just a little much on GameDay screaming like he thinks he's a WWE wrestler. Desmond was an all-time great college player, but he really sucks at this. Pete Thameltoe is cringe. Who at Disney/ESPN thought it was a good idea to give him so much air time? Maybe Thameltoe is a Disney DEI thing looking for more female/homosexual/trans representation?
-
Yeah Saban's been good. He's pretty natural up there, which is one thing you always wonder about when a coach or athlete moves to the desk.
I loved watching Desmond play the game but he's been so consistently awful for so long, I feel like it's all just a long troll.
I don't know who the other guys are, the yelling guy and the guy with terrible takes.
Rece and Kirk are fine, same as ever.

Well not with THAT attitude you won't!
That's what i used to love about working in Newport Beach back in the day, college football on at 9 AM. My hotel bar had a huge projector TV and I convinced them to let me come in early and watch football at 9 while they were busy setting up for the day. I was the only one in there that early so they didn't care which game I picked. They weren't supposed to sell me beer but with some generous tipping they'd GIVE me whatever I asked for. :)

Georgia DL is good enough and I'd MUCH rather have your QB than Cade Klubnik. Carson Beck is legitimately great.

Solo dinner. I should do a poll.
Stromboli from Carsonie's
Red hot snow chicken from Cmchicken
Those are the leaders in the clubhouse. Probably depends on when I start drinking beer.

My vote is for the stromboli
I'll be doing the pork chop at Perry's Steakhouse tonight.

PSU in a tricky spot today on the road
they just caught a huge break after gifting the ball to WVU. Very next play WVU gifts it right back.
Idk. I think if I’m PSU AD and Franklin loses this game I’m firing his ass on the tarmac USC with Joey Freshwater style and telling him to pound sand and go take a delta flight home cause you ain’t coming on our jet.
Franklin has to win this game.

It's definitely sounding good, but I've got some hours to think about it. Also we will see what the status of my sobriety/UberEats is at halftime of the OSU game

Not to be political, but when I flip to Clemson/Georgia I realize I would vote for anyone that bans neutral site games in domes

Coach... needs to retire bless his heart.
Great critique all around but specially these

The weirdest thing with a lot of college coaches is that when they want be charming and interesting most of them can be.
they just have to want to do it on TV. And, as you said, not get too wooden and such.

Hanging out in Shipshewana IN this weekend. Power went out for a couple hours. Seems on brand for this bustling Amish community.
Not easy to find TVs for peeking at early window of games.

Nits score again before the half. Haven't seen Julian Fleming though. Is he hurt?

Ninnies score TD with time running out at the half in Morgantown. They scored in 22 sec.

The gulf between what coaches are thinking about while they are coaching and what the media wants to know is as wide as the Pacific

lol. what happened to winning 7 games? Beck is going to be the first QB picked and a top 10 pick in the 2025 NFL draft- only guy who has a shot to overtake him is Deion's kid- but Beck is bigger with a stronger arm, more protoype. He's the best QB that Jawjaw has had since Stafford.
Speaking of QB's, Cade Klubnik stunk last year and still stinks. I don't know what is up with Dabo, but he hit absolute home runs back to back with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawerence and every other highly ranked QB he's had since those guys have been pretty mid. DJU was a 5* #1 QB in his class. So was Cade Klubnik. Hunter Johnson was a 5* #2 QB in his class. Yikes.

I don’t know about all that, but they have a tendency of just absolutely laying it on lower division teams. Granted, they might stop scoring this quarter, but they’re pretty close.

It’s not Cade Klubnik’s fault. Clemson has not developed QBs since signing Trevor Lawrence who, getting by on sheer talent and an elite receiving corps, was able to mask Clemson not developing players across the offensive side of the roster - QB, RB, WR, OL.
Meanwhile, since then Clemson’s offensive coordinator’s salary has increased to almost $2M. None of their receivers are taller than 5’10”. And the bulk of Clemson’s higher profile recruiting is focused to the DL & LBs. Offense is a known probably that isn’t getting fixed at Clemson.

hey if Michigan is in similar situation tonight I’ll be happy.
All you can ask for in week 1 with a huge matchup week 2 is get the sloppy out now, stay healthy, and win the game.
Imagine it’s tough for these kids to be focused today and not looking ahead to a huge match up and arguably the biggest OOC game in a hot minute next weekend.

It's not really luck, it's by design-- his design. He has a very wise trust of advisors telling him to be patient and let it come to him. They absolutely did NOT want him starting in his first year, they insisted on a redshirt. And they REALLY want him studying and developing under Sarkisian. They're being very smart about all of this.
AND, Arch throws a TD on his 3rd attempt, Texas 45-0.

Think Will Howard is a pretty good upgrade at quarterback

Which was why I asked do we really need a two minute timeout

Billy Napier wont survive the season. Florida and Texas are the two schools that I do not understand how they can ever be bad
in the past Florida I could understand, SEC >>>>> B12 and there are bunch of other schools that eat the talent away. And the majority of the high end talent in the state of Florida is in South Florida, which isn’t really Gator country.
Texas really makes no sense, should’ve been way better but as Utee says: it’s the coaching, stupid. Texas hired a bunch of turds once Mack Brown left.

He hasn't whistled a ball into anyone's butt and he can move in the pocket. Big time upgrade. Though I see McCord is having a good game right now so maybe he just needed more time.

Smart handlers and obviously doesn’t need the money as he comes from a pretty wealthy family. 99% of kids in his position would’ve bolted to start and get more NIL $$$$.

I don't think that the Zips are very likely to claw their way back into this thing.

And that's a great point as well. If he really needed money, he might be in more of a hurry. Of course, if he really needed money, Texas' NIL could help out even more than it already is.
-

They are both pretty meh imo. Howard more mobile and athletic, but McCord better arm talent. Neither one is going 1st rd like Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, or CJ.

Howard could be as good as Fields. Stroud was ridiculous in his accuracy, one of the best. If the Buckeyes defense wasn't a mess he would have won a championship
-
We were spoiled by fields and stroud. Mccord was fine, good to very good just not great.
don’t forget Haskins or JT Barrett.
McCord wasn’t as bad as OSU crazies said and he’s got a nice arm.
You want to see mid af or even awful QBs? Look at the ones Michigan had before JJ. McCord is way better than any of them except for maybe Jake Rudock.
-
They are both pretty meh imo. Howard more mobile and athletic, but McCord better arm talent. Neither one is going 1st rd like Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, or CJ.
I kind of agree. Howard, although very accurate with short and intermediate throws, does not have the arm strength for the long passes like McCord did. Where I think he’s better than McCord is poise in the pocket, going through his progressions and keeping plays alive with his feet plus running the football.
two different kinds of quarterbacks really. It depends what you want to do with your offense. I’m not sure Ohio states offense will be as explosive as we’ve seen it, but I also think they can be more efficient and have longer drives.
-
is he though? Cause I’m just not seeing that. I actually think he’s a downgrade but hey that’s just me.
There is no flabbergasting way he is a down grade from Kyle who had the luxury of throwing to marv for - ever. Who looked great in practice folded like a deck chair on the titanic during crunch time.
-

Watchu smoking Willis? Howard ain’t ever sniffing Fields jockstrap dude.
Fields was perhaps the most physically talented quarterback I've seen, but he was a step slow in making decisions, which is a problem. The difference between a completed pass and a sack is making the throw on time.
-
I'd take Fields he could tuck it and ride like the wind
-

Fields efficiency and #’s at OSU were nuts. Fields was also an athletic freak and taken in the top 10 of an nfl draft. Howard ain’t Fields brother. Maybe a broke ass bootleg version of him.

Arch Manning QB sneak, TD. That's 1 passing and 1 rushing.

I mean Sark sees them both everyday in practice and while I think Ewers is very talented he’s never really been that consistent and put it all together to become an elite QB his first 3 years in college.
wouldn’t be shocked if Ewers struggled or got hurt at some point and then they gave Arch a crack and he never looks back.

McCord tearing it up today. I do think he got an unfair rap. He was going to improve in his second year of being a starter no matter where he played.
He did hurt the running game though, due to his lack of mobility and inability to hurt defenses with a run.

Yeah I was just joking. Obviously if Ewers gets hurt then MAnning will take over. Other than that it's unlkely.
But I do agree that so far in is career Ewers has looked good but not great and consistency has been a problem. He's got plenty to prove, and he's got the weapons to do so. I obviously hope he's extremely succesful, wins championships, goes to the NFL, and then next year Arch takes over as QB1 and gets his own shot.

Maybe that was the plan, just don't pull a Mel Tucker
-
I never buy into the Miami is BACK hype, Florida definitely sucks, and Mario Cristobal is a fraud imo- but Miami might actually be back and that’s largely because: Cam Ward. He is AWESOME.
41-17 beat down in the swamp week one is impressive and Cam Ward is only going to get better the more familiar he gets with this offensive system.
Man Michigan f’ed up they should’ve offered Cam Ward the biggest NIL deal ever to get him. Michigan has Cam Ward they are back in the playoff probably playing for a natty.
-
Buckeyes just might cover after a sluggish start

I think A&M beats ND at home. That's just a tough place to play at night and ND OL is shaky and Riley Leonard is pretty meh imo. A&M can get after the QB. Not a good match up week one imo.
USC/LSU is a pick 'em, gonna be a shootout with no defense played at all. First one to get a stop on defense late wins.

rumblings that Davis Warren is going to get the start. not a great sign if you ask me. Orji must've really been very streaky throwing the ball in camp. Michigan should've thrown the largest NIL bag of all-time at Cam Ward. that dude is a top 3-4 QB in the nation and if Michigan would've had him at QB- with the kind of defense and running game they should have- they'd have been right back in the natty hunt.

that's the missing man formation out of respect for those who all got out ahead of the posse

All this NIL is horseshit, none of these guys are splitting atoms or curing cancer. It's prolly why the games are longer to milk more out of the adv.$$$
schools can't pay the players directly until 2025 I think. the rev share goes into effect then.
NIL $$$ is all loosely affiliated with the schools but not funded directly by them. My guess is the coaches tell the NIL's hey we need x amount go raise it and maybe you want to call this guy that guy and this guy and offer them some money.
the tv $$$ doesn't have anything to do with the NIL.
Moore should've made some calls and told their NIL collectives raise the most money you ever have and go buy Cam Ward- whatever it costs whatever it takes.
-
the tv $$$ doesn't have anything to do with the NIL.
Ya I know that it helps cover expenses that gets passed around in the big picture. For all we know the way things are going our tax dollars could be funding it
-
Michigan defense still pretty pretty good. Zeke Berry with the INT.

Orji with a little RPO and flips it to Edwards for a short TD pass.
7-0 good guys
-
Wow Mike Elko gained about 40 pounds in the offseason! Walking onto the field with his Aggie players he’s as large as the OL. All that Whataburger and pastries from Buc-ees.
-
Yeah the EDGE rushers are NFL players too. Jesus I love this DL.
-
Kalel Mullings runs like an animal. Tough SOB. He should get more carries than Edwards I think.
-
Run tosses and sweeps with Donovan Edwards only please….and run Mullings between the tackles.
Waste of a series right there by Michigan. Just bad play calling.
-
This defense is giving me a boner. Jyaire Hill, Zeke Berry, and Rashaun Benny making plays.
-
Fred Moore had a step. If that’s thrown into the end zone it’s a TD. Davis Warren seriously under threw that. We suck on offense. Our defense is NASTY though. Oh well.
-
Fresno State had 10 guys on the LOS and you run right into the middle out of the shotgun. LOL. wtf was that?
Why wouldn’t you have Orji out for that 3rd and short and run some option stuff?
-
We got walk on QB way under throwing should be TD’s turning them into INT’s and throwing passes to a walk on WR who drops it.
Man Texas boutta kick our ass this offense is dog shit and the play calling is atrocious.
-

Michigan looking like a team looking for a sign.
-
Michigan lucky there. Johnson got whipped
-
Michigan looking like a team looking for a sign.
More like looking like a team without an offense…
-
Michigan lucky there. Johnson got whipped
Well his dumbass coaches are trying some load management bullshit with him keeping him out of the game for most of the 2nd QTR when they were only up 7…wtf?
But yeah he bit on that slant HARD and was going to jump that route and go for the pick and then dude just went right past him.
-
Dom Guidice already benched at center. He was legitimately awful the last two series.
They haven’t even tried to get the ball to Edwards or Colton really. How about you give Orji a try cause Davis Warren ain’t doing jackshit.
-
Sherrone Moore failing his first game without Jeem. Weird player management/personnel decisions and awful play calling/scheming on offense.
JFC this is brutal to watch.

Miss me yet?
No.
I miss JJ McCarthy and Drake Nugent. The walk-on QB sucks ass and the converted 2* DL center from Jersey might’ve been the worst center I’ve ever seen at Michigan. He was so god awful that he got benched after his first 4 series and Greg Crippin came in and the OL actually started protecting the QB and making holes between the tackles for the RBs.
I think OL will settle in with Crippin in the 2nd half because he looked pretty good actually meanwhile Guidice was legitimately god awful. QB will probably still suck though.
-
They are a 7-8 win team with Davis Warren. That’s the ceiling.
If I was Moore I’d be rolling the dice with Alex Orji or burning Jaydn Davis’ redshirt at this point. You probably have no lower floor than you do with Davis Warren but I think you’d have a higher ceiling. Davis Warren ain’t it. Walk-on for a reason. Those dudes becoming actual players are 10000000000000000 to 1.

Michigan has EXCELLENT special teams and defense. Unfortunately their QB and offense fucking sucks.
We are now Iowa. YAY!
-
Orji must not be able to throw it in the ocean, sitting on a kayak in the middle of one because I don’t see any other reason not to give him equal attempts at this point.
-
I don’t get this at all. Warren looks terrible. The play calling isn’t much better.
Yeah it makes ZERO sense. They put Orji in for one play then pull him. He’s got like 1 pass and 2 rush attempts. That’s it.
Donovan Edwards has 5 carries. And the 5th one he made a play and picked up 10-12 yards and it got taken back by a penalty on Priebe.
They aren’t even trying to get Edwards involved and they aren’t giving Orji any real playing time. It’s maddening.
-
BTW I went up going for Giordanos for dinner. UberEats had their 40% off special, but Carsonies didn't participate. The family doesn't like deep dish, but I do, so I ate like 12 pounds of cheese.
-
God damnit Michigan has 3 NASTY defensive tackles. Graham, Grant, and Benny aren’t fair.
-
Also I keep imagining Robby Keene from Cobra Kai every time the announcers talk about the Fresno QB
-
Hot take: Josiah Stewart looks like a 1st rd pick. I’d say it’s 100% if he was 6’3 or 6’4 and not 6’1.
-
The family doesn't like deep dish, but I do, so I ate like 12 pounds of cheese.
Did the A&M coach inspire you to such heights
-
Also I keep imagining Robby Keene from Cobra Kai every time the announcers talk about the Fresno QB
I keep imagining him throw a pick 6 to Will Johnson every time the announcers talk about him. Hasn’t happened yet. There’s still time however.
-
Alex Orji picks up a 12 yard pop on a read option and the very next play they take him off the field. Makes sense. Not.
FUCKING PLAY ALEX ORJI.
-
Did the A&M coach inspire you to such heights
He is an inspiration
-
Davis Warren sucks. My eyes and brain hurt watching him play. He predetermines every throw and is inaccurate af.
-
Warren had Morris open by a yard. Overthrows it. Warren sucks.
Yeah keep him in the game even though every time you have Alex Orji on the field he’s making plays. Makes total sense. Lol.
-
someone asked if Michigans offense could be more dynamic this year?
Calling it an offense is a reach.
-
someone asked if Michigans offense could be more dynamic this year?

Who asked that lol?
Their defense could legit be as good as last year. It’s filthy. The offense is HOT GARBAGE.
Can’t believe they are really about to waste this defense god damn
-
Jesus FUCKING CHRIST. Why can’t they just give Orji an entire series? Warren is ASS.
-
OK put Orgy in already
-
Who asked that lol?
Their defense could legit be as good as last year. It’s filthy.
If Fresno QB could could throw this game is tied
-
If Fresno QB could could throw this game is tied
what game are you watching? Fresno can’t block Michigan’s front. That QB is running for his life or on his back most of his pass attempts. And he hasn’t had very many guys open. Couple of times that’s it. And he made a decent throw that should’ve been a TD on #2 and the WR dropped it.
-
Aggies qb ain't it
-
what game are you watching?
The two open throws in the 1st half
-
Man this kicker they got in the porthole is fucking awesome. Dude is nailing 50+ yarders like it’s nothing. Michigan has awesome special teams and defense. Too bad the offense is fucking terrible.
Probably should’ve got a QB in the porthole instead of a kicker, but I’m god damn glad they got this guy.
-
The two open throws in the 1st half
Two throws in an entire game on 40 attempts is nothing brother.
-
ND finally scores a touchdown

Oregon in a 14-7 game vs Idaho late into the 3rd QTR.
Maybe I should calm down. It’s week 1. But yeah our QB’s suck.

LOL you too brother. Fifteen years ago we would argue about god knows what. Now we have families who have beat all the arguments out of us.
-
Heck of a drive by Fresno
-
That was pathetic.
A) Why call an all out blitz there?
B) McBurrows completely bit and overpursued when if he just stayed in front of the WR that’s a tackle short of 1st down.
Why was Zeke Berry not in nickel there? WTF are they doing with their sub packages on defense? Makes zero sense.
-
LOL you too brother. Fifteen years ago we would argue about god knows what. Now we have families who have beat all the arguments out of us.
Bahaha. Absolute perfect description:

Heck of a drive by Fresno
They made two ridiculous throws and catches. Have to give them props there.

Guy on twitter I am going to have a hard time watching the Michigan Hawkeyes this year.
That’s exactly who they are this year lol. Iowa with better talent.
-
Mullings = Hassan Haskins clone almost. He’s a tougher, better between the tackles runner than Donovan Edwards.
They need to use Edwards more he’s not getting enough touches but they have to stop trying to make him a between the tackles up the middle runner. He’s not.
-
Ole Miss is woodshedding Furman worse than Johnny Cochrane 76-0

Ole Miss is woodshedding Furman worse than Johnny Cochrane 76-0
FCS scheduling should be against the rules imo.
They should have 2 pre-season games vs FCS teams that don’t count during fall camp and then once the actual season starts should have to only schedule FBS. IMO.
-
Holy shit Oregon has over 400 yards of offense and only 17 points?
-
Makari Paige might be the most underrated safety in CFB. He’s just reallllly really good and he’s 6’4”.

Donovan Edwards remains a mystery as to how he isnt better with all of his talent
-
JFC that was a BULLSHIT roughing the passer call negating Makari Paige’s INT.
-
Donovan Edwards remains a mystery as to how he isnt better with all of his talent
They have zero clue how to use him. And he doesn’t get enough touches and into a rythm.
-
TJ Guy is imploding this series. JFC. This kid is a bum. They have had 3 fouls for 45 yards on this drive alone and 30 of them are because of TJ Guy.
-
There ya go MDot

I have no fucking clue on earth why they would keep trying that kid. Seriously. Fresno coaches and QB are retarded.

hot take: Michigan defense and special teams are amongst the very best in the nation. offense is booty cheeks largely because QB stinks and OL is still a work in progress- think OL will start to gel but it's gonna take a few games. Unfortunately probably screwed at QB no matter what however.
Texas wins by 7-10 next week. I don't see any way in hell Michigan can win that game with the offense they have as constructed. It's just impossible.

Just what TV needs to make more money, and to pay the athletic departments more so the coaches and administrators can make more.

I've felt this way about him for a while.

The city of Houston had a bad day. Houston and Rice each suffered 20 point losses to UNLV and FCS Sam Houston, respectively. Maybe Sam Houston is in Houston, in which case I suppose they had a good day, albeit at the rest of the city's overall expense.
-
hot take: Michigan defense and special teams are amongst the very best in the nation.
Um horse-cart,Congratulations on all you ignore,While Michigan looked good in places Frez definitely helped them out some. Michigan's 1st score came literally right after a perfect pass bounced off the BullDog WR to an M - DB,congrats he held on to it. 99% receivers pick up the 1st down perhaps more. At least once in the 1st half Bulldogs QB missed an open strike for 6.And with 12 minutes left in the game Bulldoggs drove 79 yds for 6.Michigan's O marched the ball down the field late in the game vs a tired Dogs defense that had been on the field alot and also traveled from the left coast
I'm gonna hammer Texas at -3.5 if it's still there ;D
-
I've felt this way about him for a while.
I don't think it's hard to see why. his coaches have no clue how to use him properly.
zero screen passes thrown to him. zero times did they motion him out from the backfield into the slot and throw the football to him. zero times did they line him up out wide at WR and throw the football to him.
they don't let him get into a rhythm, they'll give him 1 or 2 carries here and there and they'll try to make him pound it up the gut between the tackles instead of running toss sweeps or stretch runs designed to get him to the outside. he's not a between the tackles bruiser.
they need to feed him the ball consistently and they need to use him in the passing game.
-

I think you’re overreacting a little bit. We all kind of knew and agreed Michigan, Michigan defense would be nasty and of course it is just as good as advertised.
But we tend to forget that the offenses are behind the defenses this time of year. I watched a lot of games these last few days and that was the common theme and just about every game.
I thought the Michigan quarterback looked pretty damn decent for a first time out last night. Relatively efficient and not making too many mistakes. On some deeper throws but again that was the common theme I saw watching mini games.
I did overestimate the running game as seen in our thread where I picked Michigan to get 280 yards. But that was probably optimistic. Given that Michigan‘s offensive line needs a little bit of time to gel. They looked better and better as that game wore on into the later stages.
Going to stick with my original thought that they will be an extremely tough out or anybody on their schedule and they have a very high ceiling and a very high floor as well
-
If LSU can beat USC, It will be the first time that I picked every game and got everyone right. ( and last time, no doubt😂)

of course I'm over-reacting, I'm a psycho fan :93:
I do think they'll eventually get the OL figured out. I have faith in Sherrone Moore. That was always going to take 4-6 weeks to gel and no way it was going to be a unit week 1 with 5 all new starters.
They still have no clue how to use Donovan Edwards' talents properly and I don't think they'll ever get a clue there.
And I'm sorry but I just don't see it with Davis Warren. He locks onto his first read and holds the ball too long and his deep ball is pretty bad. Overthrows or under-throws everything past 15 yards in the air. I still think they screwed up not starting Alex Orji and going full on spread option.
-

This was McCord - repeatedly, the guy was wound tighter than a cheap watch. Some guys go with the flow others seem to fight it.I'd mix Warren in the 1st Qtr and see how he does. The minute it appears he's on UTs payroll pull him
-
I felt like later in the game when Mullings was getting some big holes that Donovan Edwards would’ve turned those into touchdowns. He is a Homerun hitter and a Homerun hitter as a running back just needs a shot at getting to the second level. They will begin to find those opportunities more as the season wears on.
-
Also, Fresno was stupid for continuing to throw towards Will Johnson. Talk about poking the bear until he’s awake and mad lol.
I think Michigan versus Texas will be an absolute slobber knocker!
-

yeah I definitely agree, one of those runs Mullings popped for like 20- Edwards probably houses that one.
they don't feed Edwards consistently enough, they don't get him involved in the passing game like at all, and they don't run outside runs with him that often. not saying he's Reggie Bush at all- but if you want a usage case study- that's how you should be using Edwards- lot of outside the tackles runs and throw him the football.
they seem insisting on forcing Edwards to be a between the tackles runner and then they won't give him a bunch of carries in a row to get into a rhythm like they did with Mullings in that 2nd half.
-
I remember some site that was entitled "Week X Over Reactions", it was pretty good, and reminded me the "we" are very prone to the OR thingee.

I heard and read about 74 times about how Dabo didn't use the portal. He could be on a hottish kind of seat now. Supposedly, Clemson and FSU wanted to bail out of the ACC and into the SEC, maybe they feel differently now?
Vandy beat VaTech in OT after blowing a 17-0 lead, when that happens Vandy usually folds tent. Miami did flatten Florida of course, so now folks view them as the ACC favorite I reckon. Florida may well end up 4-8.
I saw Iowa scored some points, maybe they are a B1G favorite now? Maybe not.
-
Also, Fresno was stupid for continuing to throw towards Will Johnson. Talk about poking the bear until he’s awake and mad lol.

I said that during the game- that Fresno coach and QB were complete morons for continually baiting Will Johnson. He tried to jump one route and barely missed the INT and the Fresno defender caught the ball and got a 15 yard gain. He also bit hard on a slant and tried to jump that but it wasn't a slant- he got fooled pretty badly- it was a sluggo- and it should've been a TD but the Fresno WR couldn't haul it in. It was only a matter of time before he was going to make them pay, and he shut the door on them in a pretty dramatic way....jumped the WR screen and housed it 86 yards for a pick 6.
The defensive rotation was pretty stupid, they kept putting in their 3rd and 4th CB's and their backup nickel on the field in the 2nd and 3rd QTR when they were up only 4 or 7 pts and keeping Will Johnson & Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry on the bench. That drive Fresno scored a TD was a case of that. Also: Wink Martindale should never run a cover 0 all-out blitz again. He had his CB 10 yards off the WR, if you're going to run that blitz make the corners press, maybe? Also: Wink you have an ungodly defensive front that Fresno wasn't able to block all game- you didn't need to blitz at all.
Texas is going to win pretty easily unfortunately. I just don't see anyway that Michigan can score points on offense.
-
First game, caveats apply of course, but on a national scale, I thought, Georgia, Texas, Penn State, and Miami all looked pretty damn good.
We should see how LSU looks versus USC.

Clemson was one of only 4 programs not to take a porthole player. Don't think Dabo's refusal to porthole is the only issue.
They haven't been able to get a QB or develop offense at all outside of Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawerence. Dabo has had three 5* #1 or #2 QB 'croots after those guys and all of em have stunk. So either Dabo and the 'crootin' sites are whiffing on those evals or Dabo just can't develop QB's. Probably a bit of both.

I think it's closer than that. Michigan looked like a week1 team with a new head coach and a ton of new players. Week2 is going to be different.
I have this working theory that no team is as bad, or as good, as they look in week1. I said it's just a theory. :)
It's gonna be a fun game in the Big House.

Georgia is winning it all imo. Beck is so efficient, calm, in control, throws a great looking ball too. Malaki Starks is the best safety in the game. Bar none. I'm all in on Miami being "back" and I never buy the Miami hype, but I am buying because: Cam Ward is that dude. Texas is really good, but we knew this, they gonna whoop on Michigan and just sucks Michigan has to play them week 2 and not week 10. Penn State took care of business, but still not buying. Beat Ohio State once in your life, then talk to me.
LSU-USC probably going to be a 51-48 type game. will either team have a defense?
-

Idk just feel like Michigan OL ain't going to be quite where it needs to be week 2 to have a shot at beating Texas. If it was week 6-8-10, sure maybe. But right now- it's still trying to gel and become a unit. Michigan doesn't have a legit QB1. Texas has two. They have a really good one with lot of experience and the guy backing that really good one up might be even better.
Michigan will have the defense and special teams to keep it close, but I think their defense buckles a bit and tires out late from having to be on the field so much because it's offense can't sustain drives and give their defense a breather- and that Texas pulls away and wins by 7-10 points, maybe even 14.
I really think the QB play/offense is that bad.
-
Also, Fresno was stupid for continuing to throw towards Will Johnson. Talk about poking the bear until he’s awake and mad lol.

Michigan o-line and qb play looks very mediocre. I think defense will keep it close but I see Texas pulling away winning by 14-17. Michigan still has a similar problem I’ve felt for a couple year, their play calling is beyond conservative at times they need to take even reasonably small chances.
-

Add Ohio State in there my friend. I was wondering if the hype was accurate about Smith and it certainly was. Only concern looked to be the o-line at times, but o-line takes some time to gel and the rest of the talent is pretty impressive.
-
Hey, let's give Nebraska some credit too. They looked like a legitimate team for the first time in a long time. Raiola looked poised and comfortable, and he performed very well. I think they're in the mix in the top third of the B1G.
-
A question always is whether the winner was impressive or the loser is really really bad ....
-

I think OL will round into shape. Just going to take time.
Michigan is screwed at QB. Davis Warren is not good. And they won't change the offense into a spread option heavy rushing attack and give Alex Orji a fair shot.
Play-calling/scheme on offense has always sucked at Michigan. Zero creativity, zero ability to scheme guys open. Last time they had that was....RichRod. Should tell you everything that JJ went top 10 in the NFL draft and yet didn't really do a whole lot at Michigan. JJ had high end arm talent and was an excellent athlete and anyone with a brain could see that day one. Apparently not the Michigan coaches though because they started Cade McNamara over him that rookie season in 2021.

Hey, let's give Nebraska some credit too. They looked like a legitimate team for the first time in a long time. Raiola looked poised and comfortable, and he performed very well. I think they're in the mix in the top third of the B1G.
hah, I guess there are 18 teams so, #6? maybe?
Raiola played well. Nothing spectacular
Next Saturday night will tell much more

It's no insult to be considered in the top third of the B1G. There are many very strong teams in that group, including the defending national champs.

I would like to thank the University of Alabama for Isaiah Bond, he's a monster. Texas WR corps is going to be pretty filthy this year.

Great win: Penn State
Solid wins: Maryland, Ohio State, Indiana, Nebraska
Meh wins: Rutgers, Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue, Iowa, Northwestern, Washington, UCLA
Concerning wins: Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon
Loss: Minnesota
TBD: USC

Michigan was a 21 point favorite vs Fresno State. They won by 20. Missed covering by a single point.
Oregon was a 49.5 point favorite vs Idaho. They won by 10. Missed covering by 40 points.

I don't know where sane Gator fans are today, many probably understand "it's going to take some time", while being frustrated. They easily can finish 4-8, they even could plausibly finish 1-11 with that schedule. They have a W next week, and then maybe Miss State and Kentucky, maybe, and UCF maybe. They will be 10+ point dogs in every other contest.
-
I think it's closer than that. Michigan looked like a week1 team with a new head coach and a ton of new players. Week2 is going to be different.
It's gonna be a fun game in the Big House.

Of course, I WANT the Horns to beat them by 50.
But I think a close game is much more realistic. The Michigan defense is the real deal and Texas is going to have to be patient and workmanlike to put points on the board.

defense can only hold out for so long, if the offense keeps going 3 and out and putting the defense in bad spots the defense will get tired and the damn will eventually break. I think that happens next week vs Texas and the Longhorns pull away eventually because of it.

I tend to think they should give him another year. Schedule is nuts this year and if they can get DJ Lagway some experience and develop him a bit this year they might be a solid team in 2025 and so long as Lagway continues to develop- be a really good team in 2026.

yeah I'm thinking something like that, but not quite 34-3 bad. Firstly because it's a home game for Michigan, not a neutral site game in Atlanta that in reality is really just a home game for Georgia. Secondly because I don't think Texas is quite as good as Jawjaw and thirdly Michigan's defense is just better than Clemson's across the board.
-
I get the feeling Clemson is going to fall back to where they came from, before Dabo. A 7-9 win team.

I honestly expected Florida to win yesterday. I know Miami bought a lot of great players, but Christobal. I guess Cam Ward can overcome what most QB's can't with that clown coach.
I expected Indiana to lose to FIU too. Oops. I guess the new system and infusion of 30+ portal kids helped a ton. I thought it would hurt them. Two former Badgers on their OL starting. Former Badger OL coach is really good at it. I underestimated IU here.

I didn't expect Florida to win, but I also didn't expect them to get blown off the field at home in front of their own crowd. Yikes. Cam Ward is so damn good. Sherrone Moore should've called his donors and told them to throw a $5 million NIL bag at him. This was the year for Michigan to make a playoff push because of that defense. They are going to lose Makari Paige, Will Johnson, Jaishawn Barham, Ernest Hausmann, Josaiah Stewart, Kenneth Grant, Rayshaun Benny, Derrick Moore, and Mason Graham to the NFL. And Will Johnson, Mason Graham, and Kenneth Grant are 1st round locks, and I think Jaishawn Barham and Josaiah Stewart could wind up joining them in the 1st round.

Look pal, if you think you can out-sandbag me, you are sorely mistaken. I know you're younger than I am, I probably have decades of sandbagging experience on you.
Seriously though, it's gonna be a close game. Horns haven't faced a defense like Michigan's in... several years, probably? Alabama's defense was extremely talented but they don't play like Michigan.
Gonna be pretty low-scoring and probably not too pretty. Most likely, win or lose, neither fan base is going to be happy with the performance, but one of the two will accept it for the sake of the win.
This is the kind of matchup that college football seasons are made for. It's gonna be fun.... for everyone who's not a Texas or Michigan fan.

I'm not sand-bagging! Lol.
Texas is really really good. With two really good QB's. Michigan? Well they don't have a start-able capable QB. And that kind of matters. A lot. Michigan OL is going to be just fine by the end of the year, but they are going to go through growing pains and have to work out the kinks along the way. Having to face a defense with the athletes that Texas has up front ain't ideal in Game 2 when you have to rebuild that OL and turn it into a unit. Maybe game 4-5-6 the OL will start to click. Not gonna happen Game 2.
I thought Michigan might be able to pull off the upset when the talk was Orji was going to be the guy at QB. I was assuming that Orji would be the dude and they'd go full on spread option and just let him run wild and throw it just enough times a game to keep defenses honest- but they clearly don't want to wholesale change the offense completely and build it around him and they clearly don't trust him to throw it all.

Maybe that's what they're going to do against Texas, and just didn't want any of that offensive scheme on film so Texas couldn't prepare for it?

Seems like the kind of thing that Jim "I don't publish depth charts" Harbaugh would do. I mean, he's not there, but who did Moore learn under?
That said, I still only think there's maybe 10% chance this actually was the strategy. I'm just trying to fill @Mdot21 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1595) with false hope so when Davis Warren goes out there to start the game next week he's primed for epic rants.

No ranting. I’m resigned to the fact that they just don’t have a QB and it’s gonna be a rough season because of it.
-

this. It doesn’t even make sense if you think about it. you only get good at running your offense by: running your offense in the games.
practice is all fine and dandy but in reality like Allen Iverson said, it is meaningless. All that matters is what you do on game day. That’s it. Seen it one too many times, such and such player was incredible in practice but when the bright lights shine on the big stage in the actual game they suck. Can’t simulate a game.

Pete Thameltoe told me FSU had the best DL eVaR on GameDay (anyone who actually knows CFB knew that was a joke and that DL wasn't even top 10 let alone the very best) in that Ireland kickoff classic. This is why I am glad I don’t chase sports betting. 🎰
I would’ve no doubt put heavy money on FSU beating the over. Would’ve thought that after getting embarrassed on national TV by a typically middling conference opponent, FSU would’ve taken the chance at home again on National TV to really take it to another typically middling conference opponent. With the added benefit of having the experience of already getting their feet wet this season. But no…down 14-0 Vs Boston College and getting cleaned up all along the Lines again.

So here’s why this is sort of illogical.
Let’s say you’re holding stuff back. That means you’re going to run a fair amount of what you would call your “base” offense. Unless you’re Radically changing your scheme, the majority of that base is going to be the same as it was last year.
There’s often the belief that a team is holding back the “good“ plays. But the reality is your base stuff should be your best plays. Not your most fancy, but the ones that you practice the most and run the best. That’s why your offense is based in them. So noticeably better team should be able to win by running its best place effectively. When you were equal or worse, that’s when your cool and tricky stuff becomes more valuable.
But in a lot of cases, teams are just clunky and out of sync early in the season. Sometimes they get better, sometimes they don’t.

week one musings
fla st is atrocious.
bc appears much improved.
southern cal looks top 5 to me - that was a great game between two really good teams.
miami should win the acc, they are really good as well.
tom o'brien, pete carroll, chris rix, jeremy shockey etc it's the early 00's all over again. notre dame's even back to reprise their role as pretender.
nebraska's improved, idk how much but i think they'll beat cu not that that's saying much.
we'll see about michigan - i'm not ready to sell them off, sometimes teams play possum a little bit in week one. tx will have their hands full up there. they certainly looked meh though.
most of the rest is yet to be determined &/or teams looking like what most think they are in terms of uga, tx, ohio st, etc.

Yup, even if you think LSU is significantly better than Clemson (and I'm not convinced of that), Georgia has a proven track record of tremendous recent success, while USC and Riley, not so much.
-

they played Akron who SP+ ranks as the 133rd team in the nation. There are 134 teams. And the guy struggled with accuracy (like he always does). Not going to really find anything out about him until they start playing real teams. I've been saying for awhile I suspect he's going to be a downgrade as a passer from McCord. But if they go more spread option and run the ball a lot more- then it might wind up being an upgrade because he can do that. If they try to just make him a Ryan Day QB and sit back in the pocket and pass it though? Downgrade. By a lot.

they played an LSU team on a neutral site that lost it's entire record setting offense and had one of the very worst defenses in the country last year.
LSU might wind up sucking and that wasn't exactly a tough venue.

colin's bias favors all the west coast teams along w/ the patriots during brady's run. in addition he favors helmets in general. his content is best consumed through that lens.

I'm not sure what game you watched, but most of his throws were right were they needed to be. He only threw a couple of downfield balls and one of them was caught by the Freshman and downed inside the 10.
The only off target balls I saw were pretty much throw aways to avoid a yardage loss.
However, I was perplexed at one play were he was almost tackled but then decided to flip the ball to Treyvon Henderson with a backward pass that Henderson had to fall on. Other than that, I thought he played a pretty good game.

But if they go more spread option and run the ball a lot more- then it might wind up being an upgrade because he can do that. If they try to just make him a Ryan Day QB and sit back in the pocket and pass it though? Downgrade. By a lot.
Get out of concussion protocol and into reality how about no. Deer in the headlights, throwing balls at receivers feet and locking onto intended receivers is not an upgrade.Sure Kyle's a good kid but not the answer under center. This Will kid just might be Craig Krenzel with a better arm. Howard threw for 327 yds 4 TDs and a pik vs the Horns on the road in Austin, losing by 3 with a 158 QB rating. I'd say that's a pretty stiff test,KSU had 4 loses 2 by 3pts, 1 by 7, 1 by 8 so all one score games

LSU might wind up sucking and that wasn't exactly a tough venue.
Forgot they were playing in Lost Wages, still seemed more cajun seasoning, not that SC knows what HFA is. It's gonna be a long season(hopefully) if SC plays like Sunday, they're in

Jim Harbaugh on the NCAA:
“They’ve been keeping money away from players for decades. They just got hit with a $2.7 billion lawsuit. They have no credibility. That’s the truth.”
Says the guy who requested contractual protection from potential NCAA punishment. And lest we forget Jeem conveniently covered a federal fire arms offense from team captain UZI Smith for 2 months. And Tressel got ran for not reporting Tats for swag. "Never lie, never cheat, never steal," Harbaugh said during a Los Angeles Chargers weekly press conference. "I was raised on that lesson."
Says the coach who lied, cheated and stole signals.

USC prolly is the best team in the nation right now - quality win in a very tough venue.
