here's the new post for '24.    things get stared this week.   I think Nebraska v UK is Tuesday on espn2.
like all sports,  scores of transfers and inter/intraleague shuffling.      FF is in Louisville in December.

Congrats to the Gophs.  I was at the lake and missed the game but box score shows it to be a hard fought win.

Like I always say, I love that in volleyball, the top teams aren't afraid to play big OOC matchups, even on the road.  Makes it all so much more fun.

yeah, i caught the digestible highlights.     match went on forever (NCAA does need to work on same pace of play issues)  not sure why an Olympic five setter can be done in 2:10 but collegiate 4 setters can run 2.5, and 5setters north of 3 hrs.

replay review and timeout lengths.

i was checking out the schedule for week or so ahead.

this is weird

It’s a volleyball shocker in Dallas as No. 2 Nebraska is swept by unranked SMU, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18.

My dfw friend attended (he has smu daughter) he said it seemed like players met in parking lot, meaning, no communication.

I've had those days coaching.  I like the humbling feeling for my kids.  Probably shouldn't happen at that level, though saw it at Olympics too in Mens medal matches

For the first time, the Nebraska-Creighton match will feature two Top Ten ranked teams. The No. 5 Huskers will host No. 9 Creighton this week.

Set 3 was great TV.   Cook a very curious late sub choboy for Beason blew up in his face. 

They run out of subs, 5 ft 3 choboy ends up playing around the front row,  i think she came in at 29s, yet Creighton managed no swings over her inexplicably.   Match had 3 lopsided sets.   Really should've been a sweep.  Kudos to Coach KBB, though likely painful as any,  keep falling just short in the match-up once again

swings over Choboy or not having a 5'3 lady in the front row gave an edge to Creighton

Wow, beat down in Lincoln. #5 N sweeping #2 Stanford easily and #1 Pitt sweeping #3 PSU.

I'd still expect to see Stanford in Louisville for FF in December.

John Cook just won his 700th match as Nebraska’s head coach, making him only the 3rd coach in Big Ten volleyball history to win 700 or more matches.

Also, the Huskers win over UCLA tonight extends Nebraska’s home match winning streak to 32, which is the second longest in America.

last week of the season.
Rutgers got off the schneid, beating Northwestern this past weekend.  Now 1-17!
BIG will get solved this weekend.
#2 Nebraska (18-0) and 4 Penn State (17-1) will hook up on Black Friday in State College.   PSU plays Rutgers Wednesday, Nebraska at M'Land (4-14) Saturday.
do the math.   BIG doesn't do tiebreakers for determining Conf Champs.

Meanwhile,  this Wednesday night (ACCN)  #1 Pitt at 3 Louisville.     that's been must see lately.

Only #10 SMU has defeated Nos. 1 and 2 this season.  After Friday, Nebraska will have played 8 of the top 10, except themselves and Pitt.

NCAA tournament began today.   9 B1G teams in the field.

N, PSU, UW, Purdue, Oregon, Minn, USC, Illinois, Washington.
Top 4 Seeds (regional hosts): #1 Pitt, #2 Nebraska, #3 Penn St, #4 Luvl.      Final Four is in Louisville.
couple upsets today: Loyola (IL) over BYU, and OleMiss taking down Florida State.   Purdue swept WMU,   other B1G play later tonight or tomorrow.

slowly......ESPN is figuring out how to schedule the Vball tournament second weekend.  their 5th set 'red zone' is a pretty decent substitute for full 1st/2nd round coverage.
This Thursday/Friday the regional semis will be played, versus all jammed on one day, with Regional Finals on Sat and Sunday, versus four in a row.  No more 11am EST starts for somebody.     Yet, 830pm Sunday night in State College, PA?

Thursday: espn2/espn+
Pittsburgh Regional
Kentucky v Missouri 1pm est
Oregon v Pittsburgh afterwards.

Louisville Regional
Stanford v Florida 7pm 
Purdue v Louisville afterwards.

Chalk fest this weekend.  Pitt and UW pushed to 5,  everybody else went 4 in regional semis.  the only 2 seed which was bounced was last weekend (SMU), which is the only team that beat both Pitt and Nebraska.

Regional Finals

HUSKERS SWEEP BADGERS TO ADVANCE TO NCAA SEMIFINAL
The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals with a 3-0 sweep of No. 7 Wisconsin Sunday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd of 8,743 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska won a tight opening set, 26-24, then took a 2-0 lead with a dominating 25-17 victory in set two. In set three, Wisconsin led 15-11 but Nebraska won 14 of the final 20 rallies to complete the sweep with a 25-21 victory.

It always has been.  Tennis should be the same.  Net sports are better as a finesse game than a pure power game.  Mens volleyball and tennis are a tough watch.  I used to prefer mens tennis, but its become way too power heavy in the past 15-20 years outside of maybe the top 5ish players who can combine power and skill

Badgers getting swept thrice by Nebraska was hard to stomach, but also proof that quarterfinals were an appropriate place for this season to end. Good luck to the Huskers. I know rivals aren't supposed to say it, but would like to see them hoist the trophy (and I think they probably will).

Well...

The Badgers had multi-point (4+) leads midway through both the 1st and 3rd sets. Could they have closed those out? The didn't, so it doesn't really matter. No question Nebraska was the better team yesterday (and this season). But we've all seen bigger upsets. So no chance? They don't have a chance now, that's for sure.

meanwhile Purdue sees three of its best players, including Chicone and Hudson enter the portal.   I uttered this a couple years ago, but as much fun as WVB is, the portal (and NIL) is a huge problem for the non-elite programs in this sport.   Would not be surprised if HC Shondell said f this, I'm done.

DANI BUSBOOM KELLY NAMED NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH
One of Nebraska’s own is coming home to lead the Nebraska volleyball program. Dani Busboom Kelly was named the fourth head coach in program history on Wednesday by Nebraska Director of Athletics Troy Dannen.

Busboom Kelly will succeed her former coach and mentor, John Cook, who announced his retirement on Wednesday after 25 seasons as Nebraska’s head volleyball coach.
