A friend of mine sent me a video last night of a game between the Dodgers and Brewers. Guy from the Brewers slid into second, took a step back towards first, and then advanced to third without retouching 2nd. The Dodgers appealed and he was immediately called out at second.
My buddy’s question was why did LA even have to appeal it? The ump clearly saw it because he signaled out the second it was appealed. Why can’t the ump just call him out before the next pitch is thrown?
It’s something unique to baseball and softball where an official can see an infraction but the onus is on the opposing team to also see it to force the ump’s hand to call it. Anybody know why?

Yeah, it’s funny because I’ve always known it was that way but I’ve never questioned why it was that way until he brought it up. In every sport if an official sees an infraction he calls it. The other team doesn’t also have to see it.
It would be like if someone playing basketball or football stepped out of bounds, the official saw it, but wasn’t obligated to call it unless the opposing coach brought it up. It’s kinda weird if you think about it.

It's a quirk.
Like challenges in football. A DB can literally push down a WR and if the ref somehow missed it, it can't be challenged.

Technically, we have to wait for an appeal on a play where the runners are off on the pitch, the line drive is caught, and there's a throw back to the bag
I can't tell you how many times that I've seen missed bases that were not appealed, including one in a state championship game. Someone in the dugout needs to be paying attention.
