As described in the title, of course. Maybe the band has some sort of small hardcore following, but for one glorious moment, their ONE popular song was high on the charts, EVERYONE knew it, and then before you knew it... They were gone. Never to be heard from again.
The below is one that I remember from the days when I was just starting to get old enough to be watching MTV instead of Saturday morning cartoons. From the video you can tell it just screams "80's".
To this day I can't hear this song and NOT crank the volume.

I love that song. Golden Earring actually had another really big hit in the early MTV era.

Great song, I saw them live at a scary little club in South Austin in...1989, 1990? It was a seriously crazy show, I probably shouldn't have been there but we had a great time.

Upon further review I've removed Lou Reed as he had a few hits

Lou Reed had a few

can't recall any off the top of my head - sort of a early punk/glam club band

Yeah Lou Reed had several.
I'm finding it kind of difficult to find true one-hit wonders, that I really liked. There are quite a few that had one super-popular song, but also had one or two other hits that charted, which in my mind eliminates them from consideration.
-
Alright here's one I liked from the early 90s. Wikipedia says they had one other hit that made the charts, but I've never heard of it, so that's good enough for me.

It's true that was their biggest hit, but they actually charted with 3 other songs after that. My favorite of all of them is actually this one:

I had no idea they had anything else noteworthy.
I added it because I saw something years ago on VH1 about "one hit wonders", and that list had them at the top.
-
Yeah I looked up a list from VH1 online of their top "one hit wonders" of the 80s, and they included songs like "Take On Me" by A-ha, and "Your Love" by the Outfield. But, although those were the biggest hits from each band, they also each had several others hits on the charts.
-
perhaps it should be, 3 hit wonders or less?
well, for VH1
-
FYI I would think of the "one hit wonder" category as being fairly lenient. If there was a random song that you barely remember from a band but it at least charted for a week or two, that doesn't IMHO exclude a band from being a one hit wonder.
For example A-ha might have had other songs that charted, but I just googled them and from a list of songs, I can't remember a single one of them based on the song title. Maybe that's just based on the fact that when "Take On Me" came out, I was about 7 years old. But looking at their Wiki page, only one other song (from the same album) ever reached top 40 in the US, and then nothing from their subsequent studio albums charted.
So I'd call A-ha a one hit wonder.

The Sun Always Shines On TV was a big hit , all over the radio and especially MTV (and IMO a better song). Call them a two hit wonder if you like but that's what they are.
-
"Take on Me" is the best music video ever done.
Prove me wrong.

does it contain gratuitous nudity???

Fair enough. You're a couple years older than me so you probably remember 1985 a little more clearly than I do. I just watched the video and have absolutely no memory of that song whatsoever.
My point was that I don't want this thread to become some sort of "gotcha!" game where someone posts a song that they clearly remember as a one hit wonder and everyone jumps on them saying "but they had this other song that reached #38 on the charts too!"
I think we all know which artists are completely obviously not one hit wonders. But there are a few that are in sort of a gray area, and I'd say we should offer leniency for those.
-
Sure 'nuff, it's your thread. :)
I was in junior high in 1985, so right in the thick of discovering my own music and asserting my own musical independence. Songs during that year and over the next couple, are probably the most influential of my entire life.

A-ha did a Bond theme, which I think disqualifies them.

Actually we have a CPU Dell that Cindy bought from a local Tech Geek who rebuilds them. She bought it in 2014 there abouts. Not sure he mentioned it was 3 yrs old. She likes it and a friend up dates it also. The tech only does a few rebuilds a year now as the prices on PCs have come down - until recently

- Pachelbel is probably the biggest one that comes to mind. Everyone knows his Canon in D (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvNQLJ1_HQ0), but could you name anything else?
- Carl Orff is basically only known for his Carmina Burana (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEllLECo4OM), and that in particular is largely only known (among non classical music fans) for the "O Fortuna" which starts and ends it.
- You probably know Paul Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4yH4B9deok), in part because of Disney's Fantasia sketch of the same name.
- To a lesser extent, Boccherini is mostly known for his Minuet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AZOknKotVc), though this is less true among classical fans.
- For something a bit more modern, mostly people only know Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQsgE0L450).
- To a far lesser extent than any of the above, but still somewhat true, especially for people with only a very casual interest in classical music, unless you happen to be a fan of wind bands, you may only know Gustav Holst's The Planets (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHVsszW7Nds).
-
I had never heard the term "wind band" before. I gather it's a band with no stringed instruments....
-
My kids' marching band's fall show for competition, features Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. And, not a single stringed instrument in the entire ensemble...

My HS randomly had a large and random collection of people that wore Pro-Pain shirts, spanning all social circles. Not only did they not have any hits, they weren't even all that big by heavy metal standards; just one of many discount Pantera knock offs that were around at the time. My theory is that they must have opened for Pantera, who would have drawn more than just the usual concert goers, so it would have been the "first show" for many of them.
