Lions makes Amon-Ra St. Brown the highest paid WR in the NFL
But also extended Penei Sewell for under expected
-
Bortolini cannot play center. That experiment failed last year. He can't long snap at all. He's a guard at the next level and will be a good one.

Chicago Bears reveal plans for $4.6 billion domed stadium on city's lakefront - Bear Digest (athlonsports.com) (https://athlonsports.com/nfl/chicago-bears/bears-digest/news/chicago-bears-reveal-plans-for-new-domed-stadium-on-citys-lakefront)
They are asking taxpayers to fund half of it. F them.
-
The stadium here was partially funded with a tax on hotels, the rest was paid by the Falcons, I think, which would be OK with me.
-
if an owner wants help building a stadium or anything else
ask the other owners for help, have the NFL pitch in
or their own fans that support the team and enjoy the stadium
having a little old lady that has no interest in football living in Chicago or Illinois help fund it doesn't make sense
-
An idea some mayors have is it will spur development and "pay for itself" etc. etc. And of course a team may threaten to leave (Cincinnati).
I think Cincinnati mangled about as badly as it could be, but it was widely believed the city council got "funded". The same happened with their streetcar, which has been abysmal as well.
-
Lions makes Amon-Ra St. Brown the highest paid WR in the NFL
he's a great young player and great team guy- but is he really worthy of being the highest paid WR in the NFL? I don't really think so. don't get me wrong, I love the kid and I'm happy he's a Lion and is staying put for the foreseeable future, but that's like Megatron/Julio Jones type money- and I don't think he's remotely in the same class as those types of receivers.
-
I think JJ to the Vikings would be the ideal situation for him. Sit for a year behind Darnold, learn the system and then be ready to rock in 2025 with weapons like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and TJ Hockenson to throw to and an elite LT blocking up front for him.
-
SEVENTH ROUND

I'm idly interested in the draft, I suppose, mostly because of the "projections", which never seem to be on spot. That isn't a shock.
I liked the movie "Draft Day" a lot.
I suppose folks bet on this stuff. To the extent I care about it, I'm find with just reading a bit tomorrow when we have the results, ELA puts a lot of effort into this and I do appreciate that.
-
Bears take Caleb Williams, Washington takes Jayden Daniels, and Patriots take Drake Maye.
All those situations suck for a young QB, I think. Definitely will be interesting to see what they all do. I think Bears might actually be the best situation of that group and yet they’ll still find a way to blow it, because: they are Da Bears.
-
Poor Caleb. I mean, he's rich. But it sucks that his career is already over.

What is your definition of suceeded? Minnesota has had a lot of good QB play over the past 30 years. They might have had more different QBs succeed than any other franchise. They havent won a Super Bowl, but finding QBs hasnt been their problem
-
Also, what is Atlanta doing?

playoff victories

Weird stuff usually.
I think any Falcons fans out there have to be mystified and frustrated, generally.
-
Also, what is Atlanta doing?
Didn't they rob the US treasurey to give Cousins a new contract? Again this forum could come up with consensus picks that would routinely out perform the MOST NFL Front Offices
-
A weird thing is that the Falcons owner has "deep pockets" (Arthur Blank of Home Depot fame). The soccer team here does well, but of course that's very different. He's not involved with the Braves. And yes, they signed Cousins to a "lucrative" deal.
-
So I looked up pre draft analysis and evidently Atl needs pass rushers and they gave Cousins coin.Belichick's done some dumb stuff but if Penix doesn't pan out this could end in the Half Wits Hall of Fame pix.
-

having a back up plan for Cousins is a good thing
-
Backing up the brinks truck to get him? - crazy. IMO the quintessential average NFL career QB. These guys may make Jimmy Hasbeen look decent...naw just kidding
-
that was a bad thing
-
I would guess most Falcons fans are critical of the choices. I don't pay much attention to them, or the NFL. I overhear folks laughing about them at times.
-
Well at least they have gotten to the Super Bowl in my life
-

when is the last time a QB in Minnesooota succeeded ???

Favre was like 60 years old when he played for the Vikings, and he had a phenomenal first season and was off to a nice start the next year until his body started breaking down and he fell off the cliff.
Cousins was a good starting QB, can’t say otherwise. Cousins never had the elite athleticism or arm talent- he’s done about as well as he can with what he has. He’s been a successful starting QB in the NFL. He’s just never been the very elite. Which is OK. Few get to that level.
Of all the QBs taken in the 1st round, JJ McCarthy is by far going to the best situation. And a lot of times in the NFL, it’s all about the situation a QB walks into. Kevin O’Connell is a QB friendly coach, they have an elite young LT to protect the blindside, the best WR in the NFL, a very good TE in Hockenson, a really nice #2 WR coming off a great rookie year in Jordan Addison, and they signed one of the better RBs in the NFL in Aaron Jones.
If I was betting money on which QB would have the most success within the first 2-3 years, I’d bet on JJ purely because of the situation he’s walking into.
-
Didn't Cunningham do alright that one year?
-
yup, until Gary Andersen missed his one kick of the entire season and put the Falcons in the super bowl

Chicago Bears told to 'pay for their own damn stadium' after proposal has taxpayers footing $2 billion | Fox News (https://www.foxnews.com/media/chicago-bears-told-pay-damn-stadium-proposal-taxpayers-footing-2-billion)
Not that I care anymore about Illinois and their tax machine, but this is a good start.
No taxpayer money should be spent on a team worth multiple billion, anywhere.
-
Well at least they have gotten to the Super Bowl in my life
Twice!
-
Duly noted gotten doesn't imply times
-
Vikings got a very talented, very young QB (he’s a true jr still only 20 I believe) without having to give up the deed to the house and the most physically gifted/talented edge rusher in the draft as well.
They won day one of the draft imo.
-
IMichigan had 13 players drafted. Couple short of Georgia’s record and 7 short of the 20 Jeem predicted before the season.
Thoughts: OL Karsen Barnhart probably should’ve been drafted in like the 5th or 6th round. He’s a really good player with position versatility and tough as nails. He’ll make an NFL roster as a UDFA and stick around as a guard with flexibility to kick out to RT in a pinch.
EDGE Braiden McGregor probably shouldn’t have left and neither should’ve OL Trente Jones. They both were in and out of the lineup and only ever part time starters. This would’ve been their year to fill into full-time starter roles and really level up and put an entire season on tape of starting and improve their draft stock. McGregor could’ve catapulted way up draft boards in 2025 with a big 2024 season. Physically he’s everything NFL teams look for at EDGE but he never had the college production to match like Hutchinson did.

This is why the B1G needs to get into Florida and Georgia.
-
and Texas?
-
and Texas?
Too late now. That should have happened in 1990 when UT wanted in.
-
Also, is that a one year anomaly, or is PA really slipping that much in football talent?
I'd also be curious as to how that is determined. If you are a kid from Indiana, who plays his last 2 years at IMG, are you counted for Florida?
-
That's a good question.
JC Latham was from Wisconsin and then went to IMG for his last two years and blew up. Ended up at Bama. #7 overall pick.
JC Latham, IMG Academy, Offensive Tackle (247sports.com) (https://247sports.com/player/jc-latham-46049894/high-school-208863/)
This says he's from Florida, but he's really not. Never showed any interest in going to Wisconsin. Never took a visit. Kinda weird.
-

agreed, but if you're looking at Georgia Tech to step into Georgia
SMU, Baylor and others are available to get a footprint into the lone star state
-
Hard pass on the remaining Texas schools.
GT would be a great addition to the academic consortium too. Their stadium would always be full. People like to go to Atlanta - especially that area. CDawg is right there too, as an attraction.

How big of a check does the ghost of Ann Richards need to write?
-

I don't remember that like they were actaully considering it?That was before the interwebz and star trek flip phones so I don't recall

Who wants to visit Phil Niekro's washed up son throw knucklers like they're shot puts. Got arthritis in both elbows from bumping around the minors and resting them on wet bar tops. Moonlighting as some sort of chemist

After they took PSU and whiffed on ND, Delany and the Presidents put a moratorium on further expansion. That ruled out UT's interest/application being considered. Then they whiffed on ND again in 1999.
Big mistake not taking Texas when they were available.

can't remember the last time I was this excited about a Lions season starting. Loved that they were able to get Carlton Davis who is still only 27 years old and draft Terrion Arnold in the 1st round and then Ennis Rakestraw in the 2nd round to address the most obvious glaring weakness they had last year on defense- which was their CB's.
This seems like a make or break year for Jameson Williams. He needs to really level up and really take off and unleash that speed this year- and if he does that- the Lions are going to be fun as hell to watch.

14 of 17 games indoors too. Considering you have to play at Chicago and at Green Bay every year, thats about as good as it gets one youve paid Goff

At least the bills really don't kick in for another 2 seasons (so probable 2 year window) but the Lions fell into the trap that teams have of bidding against themselves for a QB.
You can win w/ Goff, he's a good QB surrounded by very good and doesn't look good when surrounded by not so good (hmm its almost like this is a team sport). However IDT there is a team out there saying hey, lets give 45M+ to Goff.
I thought more Geno like contracts for the middle of the pack QBs were going to be the norm as in a hey that's 60-100M take it or risk making a lot less as a backup somewhere. IMO a big reason why you can't win w/o an elite QB is that the decent get paid as much if not more than the best.

I always joke about how the WWL is obsessed with (1) the NFL and (2) rankings. The fact that we are deep in the NBA/NHL playoffs, and this is the front page has never made it more hilariously clear

they should do a ranking of NFL QB's nail polish and lip gloss fashion accessory choices. Caleb would top that list by a mile.

And for all the NFL yammering and ‘analysis’ by the world of sports coverage, the games are mostly boring. This article I came across last week is a good breakdown of how the NFL’s often stale viewing product can manage to command such an outsized audience – Outkick:
“But why does the NFL continue to dominate the world of professional sports when the games are so…boring? Less than 6 percent of the average NFL broadcast in its analysis was spent on actual football plays. 94.5 percent of the broadcast was wasted time or advertising. And this is the most popular sport? The 107 total plays between the two plays amounted to just over 14 minutes of football action.”
“Starting in the mid-late 2000's, the NFL's takeover of the sports world accelerated, with the league cementing its dominance in the 2010's. Some other pursuits started picking up steam around that same time too, accelerating into the 2020's: sports betting and fantasy football. It's not just that, of course. The NFL also benefits from a much shorter season than MLB. Instead of 162 regular season games per team, they play just 17. And those games are heavily concentrated on one day, or one nationally televised game on specific nights…It's a lot easier to follow a sport when it requires your attention only on Sunday or after work on a Monday or Thursday. Especially when you have money on it, or are tracking fantasy players.”

I mean I also wouldn't want to pay an employee millions of dollars, and have him spend the offseason playing exhibition games against college kids with something to prove

True. Although looking it up, his 1983 salary ($440K) would be the equivalent of about $1.4M today. So they had less on the line back then. We're not talking about Mahomes with $50M/yr or whatever it is.

Exactly. My FIL talked about how some Pirates player used to do odd jobs around the Catholic school he went to during the offseason, and helped coach the baseball team when available. Even the pros, if you weren't a star, it wasn't even necessarily a full time job.

$1.4 mil was a helluva lot more that what bradshaw would have been makin otherwise
he wasn't bitchin and his owner wasn't bitchin too loud either
they both did OK

Always love the story of Rogers Hornsby being told he might get sent back to the farm.
So Hornsby decided to go work on a farm in the off-season. Didn't really understand the reference to the minor leagues.
We had a old neighbor that employed some of the Miwaukee Braves at his auto shop in the off season

in the late 70s-early 80s the 10K prize money (5K for the loser) for the pro-bowl was significant and the teams balled out.

The NFL has three teams whose primary color is green – Eagles, Packers, and Jets. The NFL has chosen two of them for playing in first regular season game played in Brazil. In a soccer stadium wear the color green is banned:
“There's a possibility neither the Eagles nor Packers will be allowed to wear their home uniforms for the Week 1 clash.”
“The Eagles-Packers game in Sao Paulo will be played at Corinthians Arena, which is home to the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians. The biggest rival for Corinthians is Palmeiras, who wear the color green. So why is this a problem? Corinthians has an informal ban on wearing green, as a former player was actually fined by the club a few years ago for wearing green cleats.”
“Will a Brazilian soccer team actually prevent the Eagles and Packers from wearing green jerseys? That informal ban applies to players and fans in Corinthians Arena, as there are signs around the stadium stating the color is forbidden.”

Quoted:
I tried to do a breakdown from 2011-2020 with QBs, OTs and edges, and I learned a couple things.
-There were some terrible QB years that drag that position down.
-It's a low-key nightmare to grade OTs. If you're a top-16 draft pick and an OT, you're gonna start basically every game and probably make a random pro bowl a shocking percentage go the time. And since OL is always a mess to fill, even so-so guys just start forever.
-Edge is interesting because you have some clear hit/bust types and then some interesting compiler vs bright star kind of guys. Like Robert Quinn was a stud early, then fell off, bounced around and had 1-2 random later big seasons.
OT is a unique situation, as it tends to have G to fall back on. Sort of like a 2b can be a failed SS in baseball, a guy that can't handle the pass-blocking in space aspect of OL play may be able to play in heavier traffic and just sort of be a big strong fat guy.
Plus, there's 2 of them. There's only 1 QB and pass-rushing edge tends to be on the right side of the defense, as the left DE/LB needs to be sturdy vs the run (in typing this out, this may be antiquated thinking, given that everyone runs a spread now and RBs are valued less than the water boy).
