Title: Buckeye mid-season RB situation
Post by: MrNubbz on October 23, 2023, 11:12:25 AM
Not sure about the rest of you OHIO St fans I found it perplexing that Day hasn't went to Dallan Hayden more often. Not just because the other guys are banged up either he brings a spark & runs N-S really well, follows blocks, reads the field, splits seams and gets downfield.Kind of a head scatcher.

Some of the shills on the Buckeye board state he can't block,he may not be the best at that but Day has stated he's really good with the ball in his hands. On some of those boards I had brought this up last season and along with others have been trumpeting the kid this year. It just seems assinine to worry about a red shirt when he's in his 2nd yr and the rest of the RBs can't stay on the field and sans Henderson don't have his numbers. The future is now and if hayden plays well next season he maybe Sunday Bound anyway

what do you guys think

I really like Hayden with the ball in his hands but I really haven't paid much attention to his blocking, although I do recall a couple of badly missed blocks when he was in there. And that may be the rub. If he had not been blocking well, we should not see the field as he becomes a liability against a good defense. He will either be running the ball or will be replacing a good blocker in exchange for one that does not do so well.

And if blocking is the issue, he will not be drafted into the NFL. Running the ball in the NFL has taken a back seat to throwing the ball and a back that cannot block is taking a roster from someone that can.

It is concerning however that the backs are getting banged up as bad as they have been. Fortunately, it has not yet cost them a game. But if they are not ready soon, the weather will get much worst and the passing game may not be able to bail them out. If that is the case, Hayden's RS will be burnt quickly.

Weel that is a good point with the weather and I'm not confident on the others staying healthy based on last year. What little film i've seen on his blocking the tackle basically wiffed and Dallan gets a piece of the DE anyway. Try quick draws with him more and he's 5yds per, play to a kids strenghts. And he has no problem getting to the next level when the others seemingly do - when they are on the field that is. On the other board and I agree with this take Day seems to look at the sheet in front of him instead of what unfolds on the field. IMO Dallan should have seen some snaps vs a top 10 team when the others were banged up and not moving the sticks

Dallan should have been a Vol --- like his daddy.

He is very very good running the ball.

His running style match is Ohio State’s blocking schemes extremely well as he is especially gifted at planting his foot and turning up field in the one cut style

Last year he got pressed into duty and did extremely well, despite the fact that he was kind of on the smallish side

This year if you noticed he’s put on a solid 20 pounds and looks fantastic running the ball.  But he is not great yet at pass blocking, and the problem with that is other teams know it.  So when he comes into the game, they usually know it’s going to be a run.

He will get better with practice.

Just using this thread as an Buckeye update thing .It appears both Eichenberg and Proctor were injured yesterday along with Stover,Burke and Ransom being out also - not good.Don't know the extent but even banged up might need some down time so get the 2-3 deep involved
