Title: What-If Season Simulation (1983)
Post by: ELA on October 06, 2023, 03:57:15 PM
I've always done the What-If Bowl lineups, as to how the bowls would likely slot based on prior bowl lineups.

Now that any semblance of college football as we all learned to love it was gone, I figured each season I would simulate a season alongside the actual season, using SP+.

So it will be the teams' present abilities, but using the prior year schedule, conference affiliations, and bowl lineups.

I'll roll a dice and based on that jump back 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60 years.

This year came up 4, so it's how this season were go as if it were 1983

That UGA team had a new QB who couldn't pass very well, which I've learned can be an issue.  He did pull one out of his nether regions in the bowl game.  Maybe that was 1984.  They still had #34 in 1983 I think, and lost to PSU in the SB.

Walker was gone after the 82 season.  Played Penn St in the Sugar that season.

For some reason I thought NIU was independent in 1983. That happened in 1986 and then afterward again, and before. Probably a permanent fixture in the MAC now.

Yeah, they left in 86, then joined the Big West briefly, before returning to the MAC in 1997.

Seems like they used the MAC, thinking it would be a springboard.  And they dumped a lot of money into athletics in the 70s.  Didn't really pan out, and the NCAA threatened to demote the entire MAC, due to attendance issues.  NIU started fighting with MAC officials and dropped out.  Things were even worse for them outside of the MAC though

Pacific is the school I always think of when I think of the Big West.  Boise may have joined around then.  Fresno?

I guess a win is a win (ranking undefeateds over 1-loss teams) until it isn't.

Kind of hypocritical.
I guess they should've got blown out in their first game of the season like Miami did.

So #1, #2 and #3 all playing true OOC road games against top 20 teams in the same week.  When one loss would essentially end your NC hopes, but everyone was just playing for conference titles first and foeremost.

I’m digging the videos of old games.  You’re at the Pitt game in ‘83 for WVU.  That’s an early life memory for me.  Pitt was in its heyday and had won 7 in a row. WVU snapped it that day with a 24-21 win.  This was the GW TD.

Weird to see every top ten team with one loss save PSU with zero.
That's the thing when teams were spread out among 6 conferences and Independents.  Teams OOC scheduled better, but there was way less conference play crossover.

I also noticed in the argument between the national championship and the Rose Bowl between Big Ten and SEC fans, just how different the backgrounds really are.  In 1983, both conferences had 10 members.

The Big Ten played a full round robin, to make sure the correct team went to the Rose Bowl.  Then most of them scheduled 2 power 5 schools as their OOC, because who cares, the goal is the Rose Bowl

The SEC played a SIX GAME conference schedule.  So there were 3 teams you didn't play, with a 5 game OOC schedule.  Seems like the SEC was more of a scheduling agreement than an actual conference.
Title: Re: What-If Season Simulation (1983)
Post by: Cincydawg on November 17, 2023, 03:23:20 PM
I know back when UGA liked to play ACC teams, like in 1980 they played Clemson and USCe.  They also played A&M, TCU, and GaTech.  They really didn't have a pastry that year.  The same was true in 1981 except they did host Temple.

They declared the SEC Champion(s) of course, and there could be 2-3 of them in a year.
Title: Re: What-If Season Simulation (1983)
Post by: ELA on November 17, 2023, 03:54:23 PM
Yeah, I wasn't suggesting that they were using it as a way to schedule their way to an NC.  Simply that clearly if SEC teams cared about the validity of the SEC champ, they wouldn't play only 6 of 9 SEC opponents, while playing 5 OOC games.  Likewise, if Big Ten teams cared about the MNC, they wouldn't schedule a full round robin, plus 2 other BCS conference OOC games

I think as much as that debate has raged here, both conferences come by it honestly

Was that a good thing, or a bad thing, in hindsight?

A little of both IMO

A little of both IMO
It was probably better for attendance.  And better for the kids.  But once the BCS title game started, and the other conferences were playing 2 weeks after the Big Ten was done, it didn't make sense

I also went back to see if I had missed some games where they were uneven, and just to go back to the fact that the SEC seemed to be more of a scheduling arrangement than a conference, I wasn't.  Team played different numbers of conference games.  Some teams played 10 overall games, some played 11.  A few played 12

Might also do a college basketball one, although maybe just for my own interest.  I think with both of these what I would like is one that also took away the transfer portal.  If the NCAA Football game has a "transfer portal" option to adjust rosters, like how you can move players around on the Madden roster, I might do one of those next year

Also, that Raycom music, I haven't heard in 30 years, and it instantly took me back.

Every once in a while, a game is described as "one of the greatest games ever played," and it's not hyperbole. Forty years later, that's how Tom Shatel views the 1984 Orange Bowl. It's still the greatest game he's ever seen.
