Title: #25 Iowa (2-0) at Iowa State (1-1) Post Game
Post by: Hawkinole on September 04, 2023, 06:11:41 PM
This is for all the marbles in the State of Iowa. Iowa lost starting DT Noah Shannon for sports wagering on another Hawkeye team other than football. His violation carries the NCAA permanent eligibility death penalty.
Iowa State lost starting QB Hunter Dekkers to sports wagering on his own Iowa State Cyclones football team in 2021 while he was a sophomore backup QB, and for 26 total wagers on Iowa State sporting events. Hugh Dekkers's violation carries the NCAA  permanent loss of eligibility death penalty. Iowa State has lost a total of 5 starters to the gambling probe.
The UNI @ Iowa State Week 1 football game was won by Iowa State 30-9. UNI is ranked 18th in FCS.  Iowa State appeared to have struggled on offense, with just 250 total yards. From the box score I derive that Iowa State took an early 4 score lead and probably then ran the clock. Tyler Perkins, ISU's punter, punted it 8 times for a 53.6 yard average.
These are two similar teams. If you like lackluster offense, defense, and punting, tune in on Fox at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
Will Brian Ferentz win this years' "Climb to 325."?

The Brian Ferentz offense has found another gear, ever since the Doug Lesmerises incident.

think Cade McNamara builds on what he did week 1. Iowa by 10 points. I'll say 27-17. Brian does the impossible and gets to 25+.

Maybe, but Iowa State had an exceptional defense last year, and looks to have same this year. Utah State in 2022 gave up an average 31+ points per game in 2022, and Iowa scored only 24 in Week 1 on Utah State. Iowa scored 7 on Iowa State in 2022. The Cade McNamara et. al. improvements will bring more points in Week 2, but 27 would be a lot considering that this O-Line has has not learned rush blocking.

Iowa State has 5 players out total due the gambling investigation.

In addition to Iowa DL Noah Shannon out for the year,  there is still confusion regarding Iowa CB J. Harris,  who missed the Utah St game and is nowhere to be found on the depth chart for Iowa St.  I guess this confirms Harris will miss at least 2 games due to gambling.

I am really worried about Iowa's depth at DB.  They are just 1 injury away from potential disaster.  Redshirt freshman Deshan Lee will start for Harris again.  Lee has long term potential but he still has a lot to learn.  Cooper Dejean's backup TJ Hall is also young and when Hall was forced to play against Nebraska last year,  it was one of key reasons Neb got some quick scores and Iowa loss.  Does not mean Hall can't eventually turn into another Riley Moss,  but he is not there yet.  I use former Iowa CB Riley Moss as an example because Moss also struggled when forced to play as a freshman.

Sounds like a good jeopardy question.

Answer:  Brian Ferentz and Donald Trump

Question:  Who are 2 people you never dreamed would still be around in 2023.

Funny! If Trump says, "Brian Ferentz, you're fired!", unlike shooting someone on 5th Avenue, he probably would lose two votes, but win many others.

I don't regard Iowa State as a great rival. ISU replaced Notre Dame on our schedule. Having gone to Catholic grade school as a kid in Dubuque, I'd rather see Iowa play Notre Dame. That said, I was watching player interviews today, and they really seem to like the Iowa State rivalry game, in Ames, and give kudos to the environment.

If your time is very limited view the first 2 minutes of the Tory Taylor interview. He is from Australia and if you expect anyone to downplay the Cyclones it might be him.
That said, Luke Lachey grew up in Ohio, and his dad was an Ohio State great O-Lineman. And he thinks the playing environment is worth noting in Ames.

I have been to one Iowa State "home game," at Arrowhead, against my Seminoles. I walked up and down the tailgate rows and met more people I know from Iowa State than I ever knew at Iowa tailgates in Iowa City after I graduated from U of I. This was about 20-years ago, and most Cyclones were from my adopted hometown in Manchester, IA. ISU came up 1-yard short at the end of the game. This was the beginning of the end of the Bobby Bowden era.

Let's just hope that the bands behave themselves this time.  Remember how they got themselves in trouble in that 8-hour rain delay game in Ames in 2019?  Then everybody was threatening to cancel the series because the fans treated the band so pourly?  Or was it the band that treated the fans so poorly?  I don't exactly remember.  I also can't remember if the Iowa band went back to Ames in 2021.  I guess it's all forgotten by now.

Edit:  I guess the Iowa band skipped the ISU game in Ames in 2021  but the band actually did not travel to any away games in 2021.

When a state has multiple P5 teams, I'd prefer to see them play every year.  Even some that aren't quite that (WVU-Marshall) I enjoy a good bit

To me it's a no-brainer that Iowa and Iowa State should play every year.  It's good for the state. They have been doing it since 1977.   Everybody that goes to Iowa knows somebody at ISU and vice versa.  It's a fun game to travel to for opposing fans.  Plus they are both P4 schools from the same state and both draw over 55k to it's games. Academic ranks are similar although each school has its own strengths.  It makes perfect sense to play.  I just find it bizarre there are so many people would rather Iowa drop ISU as an opponent to play some random FBS school instead.   What's the fun in that?

Outside of looking for more variety, I don't see a reason to stop it.

I too like the in-state matchups. Gonna miss UCLA/Cal and USC/Stanford, although I guess they could play OOC.

What's the future of WSU/uw? OrSU/UO? Those are probably dead soon. Don't see that since the "state" schools are not gonna be in a power conference anymore.

UWash would, and will likely, dump the Apple Cup in a New York minute. After all, they refused to go to Pullman until 1982 (Apple Cup games where WSU was the host were played at Spokane).

El Assico is a no-brainer to stay on the slate.

Sounds like the Iowa St players legal problems are over,  but they will still miss the game against Iowa.

Iowa has 2 players that were supposed to be on the active roster that are expected to miss the Iowa St game due to gambling,  Starting DL Noah Shannon, banned for the entire year.  And starting CB J. Harris,  who sat out the Utah St game, will miss Iowa St, and status is unclear after that.  He may be banned for 2 games or maybe longer.  Nobody is saying.

Updates on the in-state enrollment battle

The University of Iowa reported a slight total student body increase from 30,015 last fall to 30,042 this fall, as did Iowa State University — reporting 30,177 students, up 208 from last year’s 29,969.

ISU’s increase makes it — once again (https://www.thegazette.com/higher-education/a-decade-later-university-of-iowa-again-states-largest-campus/) — the largest of Iowa’s three public universities, returning it to that position after UI enrollment surpassed that of the Ames campus last fall for the first time in a decade.

In the pickem' contest, I picked Iowa. I might yet change before game time. After Ferentz's news conference when he said not QB sneaks, and no bootlegs, he confirmed the QB is a sitting duck, and Iowa State linemen will have a direct path to the QB, as they know exactly where he will be on pass plays.
If I were Brian, I would put 3rd string QB Joe Labas at halfback, half the time, so he could run halfback option passes, as Iowa needs to stretch the backfield. But, I know Brian is not inventive, and if you are looking for misdirection with the Iowa offense when needed, you won't find it.

They do.  Defense.  Offense.  Special Teams.  All the points that Iowa scores as a team count.

The fact Iowa is averaging only 22 points so far, even if you count defense scores, is not a good sign for Brian Ferentz.

if they don't light up the scoreboard this weekend vs Western Michigan and drop 45+ they ain't getting to 25ppg on the season because the rest of that schedule just gets tougher.
