Heading into the game, ESPN’s FPI is projecting Minnesota as a heavy home favorite in the opener. The system predicts the Gophers with a 67.3% chance of starting the season 1-0 with Nebraska likely to lose its first game under Rhule.
We will see if the Huskers can keep things close, but the current FPI projection likely has to do with Minnesota’s status as a program under Fleck and the early rebuild for Nebraska. The Gophers have already announced a sell-out and a “Gold Out” for fans in attendance Thursday night.

The gopher wins at the end.

Nebraska pulls off the upset. tell the boys not to let me down Fearless.
-
well, the gopher is much smarter than his adversary
-
Coach Rhule did a hell of a job at Baylor. Hoping the Huskers torpedo Fleck's boat.

Huskers are starting over from scratch. Gophers win handily.
-
more than the 7 point spread?
Handily = 28 points? 14 points?
-
I think so. I'm thinking a 21-7 or 28-10 game in which both teams struggle early, but the Gophers get their act together in the second half to win pulling away.
-
well, they got their act together in the 2nd half last season in this matchup
Rhule is supposedly trying to build a 4th quarter team.
This will be his first test.

you're probably right. just really would like to see Nebraska put it together this year. but....they are probably gonna suck.
-
just so long as they don't suck as badly as the last few seasons
more physical
hit harder
stronger in the 4th quarter
fewer turnovers
O-line improvement
only 5 seniors as starters Thursday night
-

i think it will be close, like a 24-14 gophers where in that 4th quarter it will be a pound the rock kind of strategy which will piss off a lot of gopher fans
until we see the new offense from the Gophers lets wait and see
this is as tough for the Huskers as it is with the Gophers since both offenses will be "new" to the other.
-
well, the gopher is much smarter than his adversary
A CornHusker? Well,da

Nebraska kicks off its 134th season under head coach Matt Rhule. Rhule returns to the college game after spending the past three seasons as a head coach in the National Football League. In his last season as a college head coach in 2019, Rhule was the Big 12 Coach of the Year after guiding Baylor to an 11-3 record and a No. 13 final ranking. A proven program builder, Rhule guided both Temple and Baylor to the highest win total in school history in his third season at each school.
Rhule will not make his Memorial Stadium debut until Sept. 16, as NU begins the season with back-to-back road games for the first time since 1995. Rhule is the first Husker head coach to make his debut in a road game since Bernie Masterson, whose first game was also at Minnesota on Sept. 28, 1946 (33-6 loss).
As for Nebraska, the Huskers are beginning the season with a Big Ten Conference game away from home for the fourth straight season. NU traveled to Ohio State to open the Covid-shortened 2020 season, while the Huskers began the 2021 season at Illinois and took on Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland, in last year’s season opener.

I don't think there will be a lot of scoring. I give a slight edge to Minnesota at QB. Minnesota running game has a performer in Sean Tyler. It seems Minnesota's O-Line will be work-in-progress. Minnesota does not have a ton of experience in the O-Line. Nebraska has a ton of experience on the O-Line, but the o-line had a lot of shortcomings. Improvement should be in store at O-Line for Nebraska. In 2022 it was Minnesota 20 - Nebraska 13. In tonight's contest, it will be:
Gophers 24 - Cornhuskers 17
-
I give the edge at qb to Jeff Simms
has more experience and more athletic
-
gus & joel
geezus

Disappointing loss for the Huskers. Mistakes and turnovers kill you.

a lot of it was just bad offensive lines and bad QBs to be honest. Neither OL looked great and both QBs struggled. The Greek QB for Minny has a wet noodle arm and Jeff Sims is just bad at throwing the ball man- stare down his 1st read machine who forces balls into coverage and throws them right to defenders. All 3 of those INTs were really bad.
-
It was tough to watch in person, too. But the weather was gorgeous and the crowd was having a lot of fun.
Gopher OL had plenty of questions too, after losing all-everything C John Michael Schmitz. No running game isn't going to play well in this division. Athan looked like a sophomore out there, but he got it done when he had to.
Defense played very well, but they need to work the tackling dummies hard this week. First man missed a lot of tackles that turned losses or short gains into big gains.
Tyler Nubin won't last long on the NFL draft board next spring.
This Gopher team may be green, but they've got grit aplenty. Teams under previous administration's would have folded like a cheap suit after that goofy-ass busted trick play. But despite playing like trash for 56 minutes, they figure out a way to get it done down the stretch. And that's something you can't teach.

he's already being mocked in 1st and 2nd rd, pretty safe bet to be a top 2 rd guy if he just keeps it up

To me it felt more like UNL managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. Lather, rinse, repeat. Frost could have accomplished the same thing.

Idk. I felt Nebraska was pretty fortunate to even be up that game....that broken trick play for a TD was a FLUKE if I've ever seen one. Outside of that, Nebraska did a whole lot of BAD on offense. I give Minnesota A LOT of credit for holding strong on D and causing that fumble which helped get them back in it late- but as far as the 3 INTs go- it's not like Minnesota D was making insane plays on the ball to intercept Sims. He kept staring down his first read, forcing balls into double coverage, and throwing it right to Minnesota. Three times. I blame Rhule for even letting the kid throw it. Should've ran triple option and ran Sims 30 times that game and let him throw only 4 or 5 and they might've actually won.
-
Nebraska brought itself up to a new level on defense. I think that is important going forward.
Either team could have won that game, but crucial mistakes were made by Nebraska down the stretch. The QB has talent, but he's sort of like Adrian Martinez who would make so many great plays, and just enough bad plays, to doom them.

But despite playing like trash for 56 minutes,
were you still tailgating halfway into the 2nd quarter?
Gophers dominated the first 20 minutes of the game
Huskers ran 6 plays
-
I watched the first half. Had things to do in 2ndhalf. No playmakers for Nebraska and ghastly turnovers.
-

Oh, no doubt about that. There were enough stupid mistakes, turnovers, and pre-snap penalties to feel this way.
But it takes two to tango, and just because the door is open doesn't mean someone is ready to run through it. The Gophers were last night. I once watched #1 USC serve Washington fumbles, turnovers, and 100+ yards of late hit penalties on Jake Locker, and that Husky team wouldn't take advantage of any of them.

hard to tell about playmakers
playcalling that looks like Scott Frost - QB run, QB run, QB draw
O-line that can't run block or pass block
QB that doesn't have time to throw, makes poor decisions and makes poor throws

First game. Huskers have good things they can build on, and bad things they can correct.
The dropped interception that would’ve end of the game wont always be dropped, and the fumble that was unforced will not always be fumbled.
Ruhle we’ll figure out ways to give Vet Quarterback less risky throws.
I thought the defense looks solid.
-
Thought some good takeaways for Nebraska was the pass rush that emerged in the second half. Minnesota is built around sizeable lines and for Nebraska to in turn break through as the game went along wasn't something I saw from Nebraska last year. An under-recruited guy like Bullock gets an A for last night's work. Overall the Cornhuskers looked a lot more organized and played with a determination that wasn't previously there.
Nebraska also didn't quite like I've seen them do, but it's just hard to get past the late game meltdown.

2 questions for Rhule.
the RB that fumbled was 3rd on the depth chart for too many fumbles in fall camp
Why ITF was he in the game at this moment!!!???!!!
You tossed aside Casey Thompson and hitched your wagon to THIS vet QB????? WTF????

I'm not going to complain about a missed false start
there were many other blown calls in the game
the one I didn't like was a replay on a Husker TD that was pretty clear that he scored, but the call was not over turned
but, the officiating was terrible the entire game and for both teams
