Title: OT- Tires in Florida
Post by: 847badgerfan on August 20, 2023, 09:55:00 AM
OK Florida and hot other weather boys. Yes, it gets hot here.

Anyone ever hear of belt slip on tires? I bought Continental tires back in May 2020 and the car is now kinda wobbly. My friends think it is due to belt slip from the high heat here. I looked it up and it seems to be a real thing.

Anyone else ever get this?

They have 20K miles on them. These things were $350 (each)!!

Yeah, I've heard of it, I've never had it.  Way back in the day,  the new steel or Aramid belted radials could have this fairly often.   I thought the issue had been resolved.

Could high heat potentiate it?  Yup.  You might look  into summer tires.  They could cut your mpgs a bit.

What are the Causes of Noisy Tires? (itstillruns.com) (https://itstillruns.com/causes-noisy-tires-12164259.html)

Check your tires for any sidewall bulging.

First, there are no such things a "Slipped Belts". There are "separated belts" and sometimes those are incorrectly called "slipped".
So rub a GLOVED hand over the tread circumference. The glove is to protect your hand from possible wires sticking out.

You are looking for a bulge. If you find one, drive SLOWLY to the tire shop and replace that tire.

But since the problem goes away, I'm voting for flat spotting where a tire takes a set after sitting in one spot and gradually the flat spot works its way out (due to heat). Try using more inflation pressure (say +5 psi) and see if that changes things. If it does, then it is likely a flat spotting phenomenon.

I found this on line, can't vouch.

No bulges based on my inspection.

I'm taking it in today. I think they are under warranty still.

Dont you have a Discount Tires store there

If you buy tires from them plus a small amount for a warranty they replace stuff like this for free

I think we do.

We went to Tire Kingdom, which is part of the NTB umbrella.

I dont own stock in DT but Ive delt with them for over 30 years and never have they failed to replace a bad tire for free for me

We had the same experience with NTB back up North. I'm pretty confident Tire Kingdom will stand by these. 40K mile warranty. 23K miles on them.

If I need to buy new ones, I'll go summer tires for less money.

The idea of summer tires sounds like BS to me.  Just another way to extract extra dollars.

I've never heard of that having lived in FL for 25 years (albeit north of I-4).
I've also never heard of it having lived in AZ for 16 years, where it's hotter and drier (car plastics and rubbers and hoses becoming brittle).

If there's a wobble, I'd get it checked out and see what they see.

Summer tires would be year-round tires for us. I'm not spending $350 per again though. We don't have a desire to go 180 MPH anymore. I can stomach $200-230 per. That's it.

Ergo, you know nothing about tires apparently.  There are three basic kind of tires today, and they are quite different in capabilities:

Winter tires - excellent at cold temperatures

All Season tires - most folks have these, they are what they say, a compromise

Summer tires - A softer rubber compound meant for hot weather grip, better braking and cornering, often found on sports cars.  They are awful below freezing temperature, and superior over ambient room T.    They don't necessarily cost more, but often do because of their performance orientation.  They can sap fuel economy and may wear faster.

Same.  I'm not understanding expensive-ass tires.  I'd rather get new ones every 60K miles.

I'd ask you if you see a connection with that and mattresses.
Can a $1,000 mattress really be worth it?  As with tires, I'd rather have a $300 mattress for a few years and get a new one.
By year 7, would you rather have an expensive mattress full of skin cells and sweat or a third-purchase NEW mattress?

I'm curious what others think....not to hijack the thread, sorry.

All-Season vs. Summer Tires | The Drive (https://www.thedrive.com/cars-101/40479/summer-vs-all-season-tires)

Like most things, you usually get a "better tire" by spending more, but there is an S-curve in that, and it depends heavily on how you drive and where.

If you want high performance, summer tires are the way to go.  Some of them get extreme with hardly any tread, they are close to slicks.

I absolutely know nothing about tires, lol.
I get snow tires.
The fact that you said you always have summer tires living where you live makes me say "okay, that makes sense."  Basically, living where I've lived my whole life, there's been no reason to differential between tires.

This seems like a poor idea, living in a place that rains 300 times a year.

Performance tires really are summer tires, but really only worth the extra money if super tight handling is important to you. They are harder and stick your on the hot pavement and actually pretty good in rain as well, but they generally don’t wear well at all. For example, on my mustang Shelby, GT 500 there are super expensive summer performance tires Which are like ice skates on ice they cut beautifully. But I’ll be lucky to get 10,000 miles out of them.

A good well-rounded, all season tire that get you at 35,000 to 40,000 miles is probably the way to go for most drivers.

Where did I say I always have summer tires?  I don't.  All Seasons are the best choice for MOST people.  I thought about winter tires in Cincy a bit when I had RWD.

The Pilot Sport Cup 2 R is Michelin's Streetable Track & Competition tire developed for the drivers of supercars and sports cars who want to maximize their vehicle's performance and reduce lap times. The Pilot Sport Cup 2 R is highly-tuned to enhance the capability of the specific vehicles it was homologated for, so it may only be sold for use in those applications. Since it is designed to help drivers realize their car's full potential in dry conditions, the Pilot Sport Cup 2 R, like all Streetable Track & Competition tires, is not intended to be used, stored, moved nor shipped in near- or below-freezing temperatures.

The Pilot Sport Cup 2 R utilizes a tread compound taken directly from Michelin's motorsport tires for enhanced grip during acceleration, braking and cornering. This high-traction compound is molded into an updated, asymmetric pattern with reduced void area to improve grip in dry conditions. The massive, outboard shoulder features fewer lateral notches, and the tire's circumferential grooves are narrower, creating wider tread ribs for more rubber in the contact patch. The inner shoulder is focused on wet traction, with deep, lateral notches to evacuate water from the footprint. Even so, while Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires meet DOT requirements, they are not recommended for driving in wet conditions where standing water is present and there is the risk of hydroplaning; drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds if they encounter these conditions. This is especially true of shaved or worn tires.

No.  Just early wear.

For high performance, you want a thin sidewall for responsiveness and stick rubber compound for grip and not much tread at all for contact.

Most normal drivers don't need that, and are better off with all seasons.

A thing that can happen is the weights used to balance a tire can fall off,  You might just need to get your tires balanced.

Ended up with Michelin Pilot 4S.

NTB was bought out by Mavis, I found out, and now they are also buying Pep Boys. The front desk guy didn't seem to happy about Mavis.

Discount Tire does not have a huge presence around here.

Great tires. Good all season grip, moderately good tread life.

I'm old enough to have paid $30 or so for a tire.  I remember places that sold retreads, for car use, for $15.  My Dad told me not to get those.  When radials came out, I switched early because folks claimed they saved gas.  I didn't see any change.  I had 14" wheels on that car.  Wheel size has gone crazy in my view (aside from a real performance auto).

I have had belts split in the past.  Now a days I usually change cars every 3 years and more often than not I haven't had to replace any tires. Though Tires and batteries don't tend to last out here.

Our GTI is five years old now, still on original battery.  I had to replace two tires due to road hazards, the other two are original and look fine.

I just drove our neighbors Lexus which is 8 years old.  He's  out of the country for a while.  Still original battery he tells me, and tires, which by now could be oxidized a bit.
