Title: Modified playoff?
Post by: Cincydawg on August 07, 2023, 07:31:20 AM
As it stands, the top four conference champs get the 1-4 seeds, and the next two highest ranked conference champs get an at large.  How do you think this will change, if it does?

We're down to four P5 conferences now basically.  Maybe the Pac X survives somehow by adding some MWC teams, but that makes them the MWC plus.  And their champ would likely get a bid.  Then some other G5 conference would as well, and the better teams are now in the B12/16.

Does this change?  How?

I mean, cutting auto bids to four was probably in the long-term math anyway. This probably accelerates that.

One area where the Pac 12 is screwed is that the mountain west actually locked up it’s people with a TV deal. And it’s not like a Pac has the money to buy them out.

The scenario I could imagine is whoever is left joins the mountain west and part of the deal involves getting some money for the Pac 12 brand.

I can see it getting tweaked to the 5 best conference champions + 7 at large teams.

There is room for 1 Cinderella but not 2.  Keeping 1 spot available for G5/G6 level conferences helps avoid anti-trust claims against the playoff.  The P2/P4 simply can't exclude the rest of the FBS from the CFP.

plus even if there were no legal worries, giving the G5/G6 a spot is good for college football and fan interest. G5 fans like knowing they have a chance, even if its low.

The same reason I buy a lottery ticket.  I like knowing there is a small chance I can buy a winning ticket,  even though I know the odds are ridiculously low.  It's just fun to fantasize about winning that big jackpot.  I get $2 of entertainment just from the fantasy when I buy that ticket.

I think this is the simplest and most likely "solution".

I don't see any way the playoff reduces the number of teams.  $$$$

New 8-team playoff idea:
3 division champs from the B18 + 4 pod champs from SEC makes 7.
The XII and ACC champs face off in a play-in game to determine the 8th seed.
