The Impact: Landyn Locke is a Badger (247sports.com) (https://247sports.com/college/wisconsin/Article/The-Impact-Landyn-Locke-is-a-Badger-211973274/)
This is the brother of current freshman UW backup QB Breadon Locke, who transferred in from Mississippi State, 6 months ago.

5* QB Bryce Underwood (6'3, 210) of Belleville, Michigan- the #1 player in the nation and #1 QB in the 2025 class announced he's going to be committing January 6th.
Looks like Ohio State is probably on the outs now that they took a 2025 QB commit, they were the main competitor to Michigan in the region. LSU and Alabama look like the competition. Michigan has surged in this recruitment, Underwood is a must get and easily the best prospect the state of Michigan has produced in at least 20 years. He'd be the #1 player and #1 QB in the '24 class if he was in it imo.
-
well, then... UNL in the top 4 for Stoney!
Heck, UNL was in the top 4 for Raiola
-
The #1 QB and #1 player overall in the nation in the 247Composite- 5* QB Bryce Underwood (6'3, 210) of Belleville, MI visited Michigan this weekend for their BBQ at the Big House 'crootin event. He just visited LSU this weekend as well for a recruiting event they put on. He's going to commit January 2024, and it's looking more and more like it's coming down to those two schools. Bama is trying to get in on him hard but tea leaves seem to suggest it's pretty much all M/LSU at the moment.
Don't think it's hyperbole at all to say Jeem's 2025 class is a monumental failure if he doesn't keep Underwood home. The state has not produced a QB this gifted since Drew Henson 25+ years ago. Underwood will wind up being the best QB recruit since Trevor Lawerence imo. He's only 15 and technically could be a 2026- and he's that physically gifted and on that sort of track. For Jeem to lose him would be devastating. Jeem has to sell everything short of his soul to keep that kid home or 2025 class is already a failure.
-
a bit premature
let me know how it turns out
-
a bit premature
let me know how it turns out
yes but also no bc he's committing in 4-5 months.
Michigan lost out on 5* QB Dante Moore in '23 and he was legit. Underwood is even more legit. They cannot lose out on him or it's a complete failure on Jeem's behalf. State does not produce that much high end talent on a yearly basis. And when it is producing elite talent- at the most important position on the entire field- well you have to keep that sh!t home or you failed at doing your job.
-
#1 player overall 5* QB Bryce Underwood was just at Michigan's campus again yesterday. Came back to visit with Jeem and Co just days after he was already there over the weekend for their little BBQ at the Big House- where they served that disgusting kids menu food and tried to pass that off as "BBQ".
This kid has been to Michigan so much in the last few months since they hired the new QB coach...starting to think they might actually land him...

Coach Prime sniffing around Michigan's territory, trying to get 5* #1 player and #1 QB in the nation Bryce Underwood. Underwood will visit Colorado for their home game vs USC now.
I was pro-Coach Prime but if he somehow swoops in out of nowhere and steals Bryce Underwood from Michigan, then well, f*ck that guy. Rooting for Nebraska to pull off the upset now and for USC to blow them off the field when Underwood visits. C'mon Caleb.
-
#1 player in 2025 class, QB Bryce Underwood (6'3, 205) of Belleville, Michigan is down to a final top 7. Michigan, LSU, Bama, Oregon, Penn State, Florida State, and Colorado.
Was thought to long be a Michigan-LSU battle, but Prime was sniffing around trying to get in there. Colorado just got a commitment from a top 100 player at QB from Georgia in the 2025 class. Would be a bit of a shocker if he went to a school that already had a top rated QB commit- as that typically doesn't happen in today's landscape. Announcing January 6th. Probably still a Michigan-LSU battle.

Nebraska has added a critical piece to their 2024 recruiting class with OL Grant Brix from Logan (Iowa) Logan-Magnolia. Brix is the No. 2 IOL according to On3, the No. 56 player in the nation overall, and the No. 1 player in Iowa in the 2024 class.
The Huskers have landed a significant cornerstone for their 2024 class. Grant Brix announced via social media that he has committed to Nebraska. The four-star OL has previously announced a top list of Oklahoma, Kansas State, Alabama, and Nebraska.
Brix took four official visits in June, visiting each of his top four schools. He also took recent unofficial visits to Nebraska and Oklahoma. Since this summer, the Huskers and the Sooners were perceived to be leading for Brix.
Brix believes that Matt Rhule will lead Nebraska back
“The biggest thing was the belief in Coach Rhule and the program and that it’s going to get back to where everyone in Nebraska wants it to be,” Brix said. “On top of the belief in the program, I have a belief in Coach Campbell and Coach Raiola to develop me.”
There is one crucial decision down for Brix and one to go. Now, he must decide whether to enroll early at Nebraska or join the team in June.
Brix is the fifth offensive lineman in the class for Nebraska, joining Preston Taumua, Gibson Pyle, Davidson, and Peters. Grant Brix becomes the 27th known commitment in the 2024 class for Nebraska. Prior to Brix’s commitment, the Huskers had the No. 26 class in the nation and No. 7 in the conference.

This is the 2025 thread.
Wisconsin has landed its fourth commitment in the class of 2025 as Germantown (Wis.) linebacker Cooper Catalano (https://247sports.com/Player/cooper-catalano-46135740) made the call to head coach Luke Fickell (https://247sports.com/Coach/luke-fickell-88) and the Badgers on Tuesday.
Catalano chose UW over other scholarship offers from Kansas, Michigan State, Minnesota, Iowa State, and Illinois.

Meh. They need to sell their souls for Bryce Underwood. Or get Dante Moore in the portal. Or QB 'crootin is a failure.

Verot lost.

so I guess all is not lost with 5* QB and #1 player in the nation Bryce Underwood.
Underwood visited for the Ohio State game, was present for Michigan's in-home visits for other commits, and showed up today to Ann Arbor to meet with the coaches.
Sell that soul Jeem, lock him up.

Do they still have an early signing period?
B/C if all Jeem can get is a verbal, it's gonna go away when he gets an NFL job before signing day.

The early signing period typically occurs in December and has become an essential date on the college football calendar. For the 2023-2024 academic year, it is scheduled for December 20, 2023

literally do not care about this kid or some Gatorade player of the year award. kid is meh, in my opinion. the only QB I can remember being worth a piss from the state of Florida is Tim Tebow. Florida produces the best football talent there is. Except for QB. Michigan probably only took his commitment because they already knew they weren't getting Bryce Underwood.
Bryce Underwood might be the best QB prospect I have ever seen. And he goes to HS like 25 minutes from Ann Arbor. When he picks LSU tomorrow its going to f**king SUCK.
-
Bryce Underwood to LSU, as expected
-
Bryce Underwood to LSU, as expected
f'ing sucks. big-time failure by Jeem to not land this kid, 25-30 mins from his backyard.
Michigan was playing catch up for a year or so- Underwood and his family absolutely despised Matt Weiss. Kirk Campbell was able to get Michigan back into it, but LSU already had a sizable lead by then.
Michigan taking a highly rated QB in '24 (Jadyn Davis- meanwhile LSU took a meh rated QB in comparison), Jeem taking the commitment of a '25 QB he 100% could've slow played and waited on, and Jeem's future up in the air (almost assuredly going NFL) - OBVIOUSLY didn't help things.
I will say- don't think this one is over though. I think IF Jeem does leave- that Sherrone Moore will get promoted and he'll do well at Michigan- and the Purple faced a*hole in Baton Rouge will be on thin ice if he has another disappointing season in '24. Long way til now and signing day for the 2025 class.
-
I mean LSU has also had 2 Heisman winning QBs (granted under different coaching) in 5 years. Harbaugh's offense has people wondering if a projected first round QB is actually good, because he is rarely asked to do anything.
That said, becoming a first round pick while not being asked to do a ton seems like a sweet gig. Obviously Matt Cassell is the GOAT in that category

Totally get that LSU has had 2 Heisman winning QB's in 5 years, but Joey B wasn't part of this LSU staff or program. I think obviously the real sell is what Brian Kelly did with Jayden Daniels- turning him from probably a 3rd rd pick to Heisman winner and probable top 10-15 pick in this next draft.
Having said that, Jeem's program has now gone 40-3 in the last 3 years with 3 straight wins over Ohio State, 3 straight B1G titles, 3 straight CFP appearances, and now a Natty. You'd think that'd catch the eye of the home town kid who goes to HS 30 mins away from The Big House and whose family are all Michigan fans. But nah.
Oh and Matt Cassell was a 7th rd pick I think.
-
I can't understand why kids choose to play for Brian Kelly.
-
I can't understand why kids choose to play for Brian Kelly.
Well he has a fantastic fake southern accent, for one!
-
I don't get what the fuss is. Even if he signs with LSU next year, there's a 50% chance he transfers out, quite possibly home to Michigan, a la Quinn Ewers to Ohio State oops back to Texas.
I refuse to follow recruiting anymore because unrestricted portaling and NIL have turned this sport into perpetual free agency, and half the kids we recruit don't stay here anymore. There is literally zero excitement on signing day, because it's utterly meaningless now. Although nothing is less than zero, the verbal commitment of a kid who has a year til signing, who may then portal out at any time, is somehow even less than utterly meaningless. Heck, I'd say more than 50% chance he doesn't stick with LSU, because he's going to want to play right away, and Nussmeier is almost certainly not leaving after next season, and he's going to be nigh impossible for a true freshman to beat out.
If I'm a Michigan fan, I just sit tight and wait for the 50+% chance he finds his way to Michigan no matter what. Certainly not anything the current NCs should be worrying about.
And of course there's the age-old fizzle factor even when we do get guys. According to something I read this morning, Underwood would be among LSU's top 10 signees of the past two decades, at #3 between #4 Patrick Peterson and #2 Russell Shepard. The WR committed to us would be #6 between #7 Derek Stingley and #5 Arik Gilbert. Years ago I outlined for Eric Cartmann all the 5-stars who had busted for us, and how many 4 and some 3 stars were generally our big players. But just looking at this quick, short list, Patrick Peterson was a hit, obviously. Stingley was great, but we only got one real season from him as he stayed hurt after that. Russell Shepard is a big LOL....he played for us, but never at QB, and he was an extremely meh WR. Arik Gilbert transferred out before ever seeing the field. Others include #10 Harold Perkins (hit), #9 Craig Loston (I mean.....pretty decent, but hardly anyone who springs to mind if I were rating the top 10 players of the last 20 years), #8 Kevin Toliver II (again, pretty decent, but same thing.....hardly a CB who springs to mind in the string of DBs we produced for 15+ years), and #1 Leonard Fournette (hit). My point is, even if Underwood came to LSU and stayed put, that list indicates a decent chance he won't pan out to be the superstar everybody thinks.

yeah this is all very true. just look at the 5* QB's from the '23 class. Dante Moore lasted not even a year at UCLA and same for Malachi Nelson at USC.
-
Acquiring talent is important. What I think is even more important moving into the future is culture and building one that guys want to stay and build success long term. Teams filled with "free agents" moving around all the time may be powerful, may have winning seasons, but will fall short in title situations in my opinion. There has always been something about closely bonded teams that end up on top. There's certainly exceptions to that, where talent trumps the warm and fuzzy family culture, but the latter is more powerful than a lot of people realize. Michigan has been nowhere near #1 in recruiting and look where it landed. Losing a home state, high ceiling qb isn't ideal, but maybe he's just not the right fit. If there's anywhere that's a bigger red flag to me it's been at WR.
-
I think you're correct about culture, but I'll point out that Michigan is just on the right side of the 50% blue-chip threshold supposedly required to win an NC, according to the people that calculate these things.
So if you get 50+% blue chip talent and have the right culture.....well, we saw what happens.
-
It's pretty obvious, but going forward, the best teams are going to be the ones where the coaches and administrators can blend and navigate both the team-building chemistry, and the all-star one-and-done types, whether they're new recruits, or portal transfers. You're not going to be able to get it done, consistently, without balancing both of those.

you really think Ohio State didn't do it's own scouting of this kid? every school does scouting. if Ohio State offered the kid, it's because they scouted him either on film or in person or both and liked what they saw....

youse Badgers know why his kid was let go?
__________________________________
Wisconsin had identified Kahmir Prescott early and made him one of its top defensive back targets for this cycle. The Badgers' defensive coordinator, Mike Tressel, also utilizes a base 3-3-5 system and saw Prescott's skill set as a great fit. Tressel wanted Prescott to play field safety and nickel in his system.
Kahmir made his Wisconsin commitment public on April 27 and returned to Madison for his official visit June 2-4, essentially shutting down his recruitment for the next seven months. Wisconsin and Prescott parted ways as the early signing period approached, with Prescott officially decommitting on Dec. 7. Whether it was a numbers crunch with the Badgers or a concern over eligibility we might never know, but it certainly wasn't because of a lack of talent.
A handful of schools reached out immediately when Prescott came back on the market, with Syracuse and Buffalo making the biggest push. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Prescott decided to hold off on signing and take his recruitment into February to see what other opportunities would present themselves after the dust settled from the early signing period.
That decision helped Nebraska make a play in January.
Prescott announced his commitment to Nebraska during the traditional signing day, Feb .7. He will be one of the four known members of this class - along with Evan Taylor, Xander Ruggeroli and Kamdyn Koch - who will be NIL-funded premium walk-ons.

A three-star athlete out of Ohio, Haddad is expected to play safety at Wisconsin, but his versatility could change opinions over the next year.
Haddad was a visitor at Wisconsin’s junior day last weekend and received an in-school visit before committing to the program. However, there may be some competition for the Ohio native now.
Following his commitment to Wisconsin, Haddad revealed two offers: Iowa and Ohio State, of which the latter is more concerning.
Haddad is an in-state player for the Buckeyes, whose stock could soar up with another good season, potentially leading him to more national interest.

flood of crystal ballz have come in for Michigan for 247Composite top 100 player (#96 overall in nation, #5 overall in Ohio) 4* CB Dawayne Galloway (6'1, 175) from Ohio. Michigan apparently picked up a few commits in the past month. Haven't paid much attention to 'crootin since they lost Bryce Underwood to LSU. Kind of insane that Michigan can win 3 straight B1G titles, 3 straight playoffs, win a Natty and own Ohio State in the process and they didn't land one of the 3 five star QB's in their own backyard in that time span- one of which happens to have been the grandson of one of Michigan's all-time great coaches. Blows my mind actually.
Bryce Underwood is the best prospect the state of Michigan has produced since like Tyrone Wheatley or Charles Rogers or Drew Henson and nada.

Tennessee has a top 5 ranked class now after they just land a commitment from the #1 OT and #2 player overall in the 2025 class in 5* David Sanders (6'6, 290) out of North Carolina. This is a few days after landing the commitment of the #1 QB and #1 player overall in the 2026 class in 5* Faizon Brandon.
I have no clue how they are doing it other than to say they must have a CRACK NIL program.
-
yeah, f coaching college football. this sh*t is a joke. someone want to tell me how a 6'5, 260 pound HS OL who hasn't played a down of college football yet and might wind up sucking is worth $800k per year? Georgia Tech is absolutely desperate and looks pathetic. he ain't worth that, no HS OL is. only shot in hell I'd ever offer a HS recruit that kind of money is if it's a QB....and he'd have to be an insane level prospect.

Was clicking through commitment lists and checking Clemson’s, noticed their top 4 commitments are all defensive lineman, all ranked Top 100 players nationally – 64th, 55th, 37th, & 35th.
Their top 6 commitments are all defensive players, rounded out with defensive backs – a CB 71st nationally & a S 87th nationally.
Then there’s a few offensive players but most of the class is heavy on defense, which seems to be the direction Clemson has gone for quite some time. Defense, defense, defense.
Post-Trevor Lawrence, Tiger offenses have gone stale and simplistic, and if what comprises their recruiting classes is any indication, Clemson has failed to self-correct. Last year’s 50nd ranked offense (total) to go along with its 8th ranked Defense (total) looks like the best of what’s coming for Clemson going forward.

apparently there is smoke to the Michigan recruitment of 5* QB #1 overall player Bryce Underwood. Didn’t believe Sam Webb and still don’t- but Steve Witflong formerly of 247 and now the top guy at On3 is saying it’s real. Rumors are Michigan NIL collective putting together a $5 million package to keep Underwood home. Portnoy reportedly isn’t involved yet. Slap in your $3 MIL Davey and pump that number up to $8 mil.
-
If we are getting into the $8 Million level to buy top HS players, I'm out.
I'll watch the Bears again. F it.
-
A curious thing about NIL is that it's actually advantageous to let your competitors believe you're spending MUCH more than you actually are.

we've been there. that was reportedly Nico's package at Tennessee. he's pretty damn good. I'd say worth it.
-

also, very true. if you're Michigan you just might want to maybe leak some false info and keep LSU shitting bricks about having to come up with $8 million from donors in a very poor state to keep your top flight QB committed and ultimately signed.
Michigan has billionaires and hundred millionaire alums/donors up the wazoo that come from every state in America who can write checks to buy players. Not sure LSU can say that same thing.
-
You are correct, LSU is notoriously weak at NIL. They just don't have the breadth or depth of pockets compared to the top NIL players. They'll still get a lot of good recruits but they're going to suffer in direct bidding wars against the top NIL schools.

College in general is dead. I'm not narrowing that down to football nor sports. The institutions sold themselves out for the almighty $. Quite candidly, I'm not sure why anyone besides athletes utilize the system. Wish I met far fewer people that have $125k in student loan debt, with a 45-50k annual income. What i'm most interested to watch in the coming years is what breaks first, the collegiate sports platform or the overall institutional platform.

$125k in student debt is light, if they have that consider them lucky. Alot of them have more, especially if they are doctors or lawyers....you're talking more like half a mil in debt or more. And student debt is notoriously hard to walk away from. you're pretty much screwed if you have it.
-
Wait I thought all student loans were being forgiven these days? That's my sole plan for paying for my kids' college!

Oh trust me, I know the balances can be much higher, but I was specifically talking about the amount that have 125k and still have very mediocre income. That being said, i've also met quite a few lawyers that have nearly a quarter mil in student loan debt and their income is far less than I expected. Money certainly isn't everything, but there's too many people that are never given themselves a chance financially and will be in financial handcuffs their entire life.

Michigan loses 4* QB commit Carter Smith tonight. Kid seemed super locked in with Michigan. Just reading the tea leaves...think this might mean the news about Bryce Underwood is legit. Holy shit. As they say....money talks, bullshit walks.
Would've liked to keep Carter Smith in the fold for depth & competition and as a developmental prospect who redshirts and maybe you really have something down the road in a couple years. But if you can actually really get Bryce Underwood, sorry kid. Bye. Bye.
Smith's dad tweeting this apparently....makes me think something is actually going down behind the scenes right now with Bryce Underwood and he's coming to Michigan. Holy shit.

Michigan will be sorry.

Damn. Get Smith some NIL money. Michigan has room and need for both QB recruits and then some.
-
He's looking at Wisconsin, Georgia, Clemson and LSU now. The father is pissed. He is NOT going to Michigan.
-
Michigan will be sorry.
Only if they don’t get Bryce Underwood. If they get Bryce, doesn’t matter. That’s a trade you make 100 times out of 100 and any coach in America would as well by the way.
-

Carter Smith was never going to play QB here even if he signed. He’s not a good enough passer. He wasn’t ever going to beat out Jadyn Davis, Brady Hart, or whoever Michigan brings in the portal. And definitely not Bryce Underwood if he comes.

Michigan's NIL is apparently shit compared to other helmet programs, because the largest donors want to put their name on something, or continue to get access, like they do for committing to the program. If they want to dump whatever money they have into one 17 year old, I would think the other helmet programs would welcome it.
Obviously, comparing it to non helmet programs is a non-starter. Even having a low NIL commitment is larger than an MSU, or a Wisconsin, or an Iowa. We've turned college football into an even worse version of MLB. But I assume the powers that be don't realize how not having a cap, even while having SOME amount of team control has killed MLB

I did not realize he was the Florida Gatorade player of the year in 2023.
Not bad for a kid who would never see the field at Michigan.
I'll take it.

Doubt he would’ve beaten out Jadyn Davis or whoever they also bring via the portal.
And 100% certain he wouldn’t have beaten out Bryce Underwood (if he comes) or Brady Hart (if he sticks).
So even if he stuck with Michigan, he’s hitting the portal after a year or two.
-
Every QB commit is to whoever pays him the most money. I think at the other positions there are some other considerations. But quarterbacks are just following the money
-
It's not money (I know this for sure).
-
well then, Wisconsin has a shot
-
Wisconsin has a sneaky strong NIL, actually. They just don't buy HS players.
They sell NIL potential and that's it.
-
Michigan's NIL is apparently shit compared to other helmet programs
this isn’t exactly true. the NIL has been very strong and competitive for the top players on the team. what was lacking is the NIL money for depth/role players and the NIL money for recruits which was nonexistent. That is changing in a dramatic way. Sherrone Moore’s approach to NIL is vastly different than Jeem’s who was not really all that onboard for it when it comes to recruiting HS players.
-

QB is far and away most important position on any team. Without one you are screwed- as Michigan is showing this year.
I think paying NIL money for HS kids is a bad idea with the exception of QB. You take a swing and go all in with NIL $$$$ on a top ranked one like Dylan Raiola or Bryce Underwood every single time imo.
-
I'll agree if Dylan can scratch out 2 or 3 more wins this season
-
I'll agree if Dylan can scratch out 2 or 3 more wins this season
Brother he’s an 18 year old true freshman and I don’t know about you but to my eye he looks like far and away the most talented QB I’ve seen play at Nebraska in oh….30+ years?
-
most arm talent for sure
his last 3 games haven't been as good as he started in the first 5
playing UCLA's pass D might help this week
needs to keep improving and finish strong
-
Raiola is the real deal, super impressed with his performance as a true frosh.
Nebraska's got some building to do around him, but for the first time in a long time, I see some hope on the horizon for the Huskers.
-
yup, need an O-line first and foremost
that's his uncle's job for now
some tough luck there - 2 left tackles and the starting left guard are out for the season with injuries
also need better WRs - the transfers from Texas and Wake Forrest haven't been as good as hoped
obviously, an O-line helps any QB with time to read and throw
and a running game is a QB's best friend

get Raiola a legit OL and run game and he'll make all the WR's better imo.
I'd MUCH rather have an elite QB with average WR's than an average QB with elite WR's. A great QB will make his receivers better. But a QB can't be great without an OL protecting him. Just get him an OL and everything will take care of itself.

Absolutely. Wisconsin has its best set of receivers since Wilson had with Abby and Toon. They just don't have Wilson. Far from it.

using the 2 transfers was supposed to give them a Redshirt season to make that leap
the transfers have been mediocre

Yes- I think this will be a “thing” now every season. Huge dollars for EXPERIENCED. QB transfers. Or, guys who were developed somewhere and are the best option in a new place.

In state 4* RB Jace Clarizio, who flipped from MSU to Alabama 2 weeks ago, surprisingly flipped back to MSU and signed this morning.
Also looks like they may hold off Ohio State and Virginia Tech for 4* CB Aydan West, who was presumed to be flipping after Martin left.
3* ATH Bryson Williams looks to be the only commit not signing, but he absolutely blew up in the state playoffs, and his only P4 offers were MSU, Pitt, Kansas, Purdue and Illinois, so it seems like he is fishing around to see if he raised his profile

I bitched and moaned not to include them. Worst thing the B1G could've possibly done was add Oregon & Washington. Should've just kept it at 16 with USC & UCLA. Oregon in the B1G with Dan Lanning coaching and Phil Knight's money is going to be a pain in the fucking ass for the foreseeable future. Was dumb as fuck to let them in, should've never invited them and let them starve and die out slowly and forced Lanning to jump to an SEC job.

it was fantastically retarded move to invite them into the B1G. every senior exec in the B1G should be lined up in front of a firing squad for it.

Yup, freezing Oregon out of the major conferences would have been the best decision.
Of course now Michigan has its own mega-multi-hundred-billionaire who could buy Phil Knight 6 or 7 times over, so I guess they won't need to worry as much.

I didn't even realize today was NSD. I guess I'm still stuck in the past. Besides, with the portal, a lot of these kids won't even see year 2. If you recruit a stud 4*, and they're a bust, no problem, just go out to the nearest directional school and recruit all the best undervalued players.

OK, if this is a joke, I don't get it. Who are you referring to? Jim Harbaugh?
he's referring to Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle who is on Forbes' list as the 2nd richest person on the planet with a net worth estimated at around $240 billion. Ellison's wife is a Michigan grad and she's been very active in funding NIL.

what was the other option? let them go to the SEC so that conference gains more power and eventually swallows all other conferences? They're currently hated because of the Phil Knight spend.. ok sure.. but the Phil Knight spend can't be hated while embracing the Larry Ellison spend. I personally hate it all, but it's also where the game has gone. Unless there's a time machine, there's no fixing nor changing it and there would still be the guys dropping off secret bags of money that people could still complain about.. which.. i can confidently say that Michigan was involved in those activities at some point as well.

Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington would fit better in the XII - or even better - in the f'ing PAC.

The SEC had no interest in Oregon or Washington, that was a weird panic move by the B1G offices.

PAC 12 being dismantled sucks, but if USC, UCLA and Washington were going to be added, then Oregon should be viewed as a great asset to the conference, not a nightmare.
-
Other than the obvious geographic problem, why is everyone so down on Oregon? Because they have money and they are good?
Anything else?
The B1G helmet programs are crying that their shiny helmets are going to lose recruiting battles to Oregon's shiny gold doubloons.
-
MSU also added a 2023 DE signee for Oregon State, who they beat USC, Arizona, ASU and BYU for, but took his 2 year mission instead. Guessing he is very far from game shape, but he was a borderline 4* recruit at the time
-
The B1G helmet programs are crying that their shiny helmets are going to lose recruiting battles to Oregon's shiny gold doubloons.
Not sure how many people listen to the Locked On college football podcasts, but they do a "Big Ten crew" once a week, where they bring in a bunch of team specific hosts together. The OSU guy is a little too cocky, the MSU guy is the biggest chicken little, the IU guy is just happy to be here, the Michigan guy can't ever do it because he's too busy. The hosts literally match their schools perfectly. And the Oregon guy, whenever he's on, provides nothing, and just dumps on other schools for no reason. They all seem to hate him, particularly the Washington guy. If he's as close a match to the fan base as the others, I get it
-
Curious.
Oregon, as a university, is a little less prestigious than Washington, USC, and UCLA. But the people I know who went there love it. I can't say that I get a real bad vibe from the people I know who are Oregon Ducks. Washington has a bit of a Michigan-like feel. It's a strong school academically, and for football it has a strong history. Lots of U-Dub fans who are a little more impressed with the program than probably they should be. U-Dub fans often look down on Ducks because Oregon has definitely benefitted from the Phil Knight era, and pre-Knight, the football program wasn't much to crow about. So the Dawgs see them as new money.
-
I think USC/UCLA was more of the panic move. Nobody in LA gives a shit about them. Once you grabbed them, whatever, go get the two programs with actual fanbases
USC is a blue blood that turns on national television sets. Nobody cares about Oregon or Washington.
-
The B1G helmet programs are crying that their shiny helmets are going to lose recruiting battles to Oregon's shiny gold doubloons.
I have ALWAYS despised them, before they were even any good. My sincere hope was that with the PAC imploding and B1G & SEC taking over the world that Oregon would get left conference-less and die. But nope. Morons in the B1G threw them a life line. And for what? They bring nothing to the table.
-
what was the other option? let them go to the SEC so that conference gains more power and eventually swallows all other conferences?
SEC would've never taken them.
-
They bring nothing to the table.
If they win a Natty this year, do you still say the same thing?
-
Ohio State loses 5* CB Na’eem Offord to Oregon. Oregon also coming after Michigan TE commit Andrew Olesh who is a 4* and top 50 overall player in the nation who will be signing on Friday.
Easy come easy go. That was expected ( although most thought it would be to Auburn)
But OSU picked up 2 flips. A 4 RB and DE from UCLA.
-
USC is a blue blood that turns on national television sets. Nobody cares about Oregon or Washington.

-
I think Oregon is a bigger brand than USC is now
No way.
USC draws eyeballs even when they suck. If/when Oregon sucks, nobody's watching them. They're a lot like Virginia Tech was in the late 90s/early 2000s. But USC is a true blueblood that people will watch even when they're down.
-
If they win a Natty this year, do you still say the same thing?
yes, I would. And they won't win the Natty. Oregon has never won a Natty in it's history. better Oregon teams than this have failed and that was before they had to deal with the gauntlet of a B1G CCG + 12 team playoff.
Texas, Georgia, or Ohio State will win it all imo.
-
I think Oregon is a bigger brand than USC is now
Nah. They might win a lot more as of recently but they aren't a bigger brand than USC.
-
I think that might just be a factor of cable cutters being younger. USC was very cool for like 5 years, but they've been otherwise irrelevant for 30+ years. Oregon is cool, my kid wants Oregon gear. Nobody wants USC gear
-
LSU commit 4* WR Derek Meadows was suppose to sign with either Alabama or Michigan today. Sounds like he's not signing early anymore. Recruiting is fun.
Also....this is pretty funny...and accurate.

Yeah, Gundy going 0-9 in Big 12 play was also funny. I think we need some regulations on all of this. I would love the NIL to be tied to contracts, but I also think it would be fun if coaches could be tied to the same double sided contracts. Or we could just keep going down the road to this being the XFL

whoa. might explain USC's lack luster 'cruiting class with like 15 de-commits...

I see USC gear all over the place in Texas. I can't recall ever seeing Oregon gear, not even once.
So we have contradictory anecdotes...
-
hah, those are the folks that fled Cali to move to Texas
folks in Oregon are not moving the Texas - thank them for their support
-
I see both Texas and Oregon here in SoCal. And a lot of Purdue.
I take that as California has great job opportunities for the best & brightest (Texas & Purdue grads) and that the bandwagon fans here like Oregon when USC/UCLA suck.
-
4* WR Derek Meadows to Bama. Oh well. I'll take that trade so long as Michigan steals their 5* OT commit Ty Haywood who isn't singing early anymore and is visiting Michigan once the dead period is over in January.
-
Michigan still has a couple big fish they are chasing into Feb signing day, most notably 5* OT Ty Haywood.

And you Big Ten guys, I want you to see this. 11th in the country is good for.....8th in the SEC. This is Exhibit 92982842824742 why the SEC gets the benefit of the doubt.

yup, most of the recruits will be gone in a couple years but better to be in the top 20 than on the outside

At least they have basketball...
...checks notes, ACC has 11 of their 18 teams outside of the KenPom Top 70. The money is making the Big Ten and SEC the clear top in both sports. Yeah, Kansas, Duke, UNC basketball, and Clemson and FSU football will still probably figure it out, but once revenue sharing kicks in, they are going to have to pump so much in to overcome the Big Ten/SEC tv contracts

ACC will be dead before long and get swallowed up by the B1G & SEC. Clemson & FSU have been angling/trying to figure out ways to leave the conference.
I want Miami & UNC in the B1G.
-
It would be nice if there had just been a plan from the start to break football off and be it's own thing, and then preserve the geographic conferences for everything else
-
football still gonna have to pay for basketball and all others

football still gonna have to pay for basketball and all others
Football doesn't pay for basketball
And either way, it would still be part of the athletic department, it just wouldn't force every school to be dragged along as conferences kept realigning

he's from PA and his father played at Penn State. Sounds like the pressure from the Dad/family to follow in the Penn State legacy of pops and the distance to home was too much for Michigan to overcome to hold on to him in the end.
was really thinking it was going to be Oregon in the end. much rather he wound up at Penn State than Oregon to be honest. James Franklin ain't beating Michigan any time soon, he sucks meanwhile Oregon just whooped Michigan's ass this year and Dan Lanning is a problem.
-
I’m not normally a judging person based on a picture, but this doesn’t look like a happy family on what should be one of the happiest days. Looks like a family that puts too much pressure on a kid.

The 'pick a hat from the group' and especially 'dick around and put on multiple hats' schtick = weak parents.
You tell a school you're going to sign with them, you honor your word and do it...and do it quietly. This public power trip from an 18 year old dipshit who has no actual knowledge of the world is gross. Now add in NIL money for kids who haven't played a down for a university......just another example of a broken system.
-

Have you been drinking? Unless you're like 12 years old, Oregon has nothing on USC when it comes to branding or notoriety.
The Ducks haven't won shit...ever. USC is held in much higher esteem by every college football fan born since 2000.
USC is a top 10 program and Oregon is maybe 20-25th. Uniform combinations do not a great program/brand make.

No, but 12 years olds are more relevant to recruiting than 40 year olds. I absolutely value USC more. But my 12 year old will watch Oregon vs. whoever, and was pissed I turned on USC-ND last weekend. Old heads like me prefer USC, but kids love Oregon

Kids don't have any money. Have no power. Have no real voice.
IF things remain how they are between the two programs for the next entire generation (25 years) and those kids have grown up and have money and power, THEN you'll have an argument.
-
One interesting thing is that Florida's top 2 recruits are both legacies.

A 25th-ranked class + no NIL transfers makes Clemson a dull boy.

Zero. And no other D-1 offers.

Damn straight. And if you want to get a Communications degree and go into the family business of broadcasting, why not get it for free at UofM (14th nationally in Communications according to some website I've never heard of (https://www.niche.com/colleges/search/best-colleges-for-communications/))?
All you need to do is go hold a clipboard, hit the weight room a bit, and practice with the third stringers...
-
If Ohio State didn't bother to recruit him, why would anyone be upset about him signing with Michigan? Seems like a silly waste of a roster spot and a scholarship just to "troll" the Buckeyes but even if it is, so what? It's good for the kid, more power to him!
-
I would guess that Herbstreit will be the first backup QB into the Ohio State game where the win was not in doubt.
-
Some people need to get more in their life. 🙄
Exactly this. Personally, as a parent, I'd be proud and happy.
No D-1 offers, but the kid isn't exactly a slouch either. Anyone in Ohio I think knows some of the main football schools whether it's Ed's, Ignatius, Mentor in Cleveland area or St. X, Moeller, ELder and a couple others in Cincy. Being the QB at St X in a year they made it to regionals losing to Moeller, tend to know that most times kids like that are good to have around your program and on the professional side eventually your business.
-

Sounds like it’s this. They would’ve taken him as a walk on in the past but going forward you can’t just have unlimited walk ons. 105 hard cap on the roster and all of them can be on scholly, so why not ?
-
You sure?

I’m sure Herbie has boat loads of tv money after working for Disney for 30 years, but free is free.
Michigan education for an out of state kid + room & board & food ain’t cheap. I’m sure Herbie won’t mind saving hundreds of thousand of dollars over the course of 4 years. Who wouldn’t?

That could change

Yeah, it comes down to a lot of things with these kids...
Someone being actively recruited to Michigan for a scholarship spot is expecting a scholarship, and likely NIL money (even if it's some "baseline" value and not star-level money). A walk-on is more along the lines of "just happy to be here" sort of thing.
So if the B1G actually is limiting scholarships to 85, I could see Herbie's kid--who has no other high-level offers--joining the team anyway because it'll be a great education and it's not like his dad will notice the cost other than a rounding error.
But if Michigan actually WOULD be giving out "up to" 105 scholarships, telling a kid you want him on the team but you're not going to pay his way is just disrespectful. And if you really would be giving out up to 105 scholarships with a hard cap, you're better off spending that scholarship (+NIL) money on a kid who isn't brought in PURELY to be a deep depth QB that you seriously hope never sees the field, or plan to move to a different position.
-
IMO smart coaches are gonna have to manage every one of the 105 spots effectively

Michigan is the team to beat for both of them right now, but others are trying to get involved. Have to close them in January. They add those two their recruiting class moves up to about 5th in the nation.

5* OT Ty Haywood of Texas signs with Michigan. That's how you build an offensive line, by stacking back to back classes. Their 2024 & 2025 OL classes combined are just as good as it gets. On paper of course. Still have to develop guys. Future looks extremely bright along the OL and of course they just brought in the #1 player/#1 QB in the nation in Bryce Underwood.
Things are looking up for Michigan coming off a disappointing 8-5 season. Really like the porthole WR from Indiana can fill a role with his size in the red zone and on jump balls and really like incoming frosh Andrew Marsh but still need some more talent at WR going forward. Having said that, give me an elite QB and OL all-day every day over WR's. If Bryce Underwood hits and that OL develops like it should they'll make the WR's better. You build the offense with the QB and the OL and it all goes from there.

Pretty shocked by this one.. I heard the talk, but i thought it was talk and he truly would land at Bama. With him Babalola, Gach this year and Sprague, Frazier and Hamilton last year, they will have a lot of wins in the trenches in the coming years. Hamilton I learned last week i learned that one of my guys that works for me is close friends with Luke Hamilton's dad and they grew up together. Will be nice to sway another person in Ohio to secretly root for Michigan a little the next few years.

Hamilton might wind up never playing to be honest. Andrew Sprague, Blake Frazier, Andrew Babalola, Ty Haywood, and Avery Gach are all LEGIT OL prospects. That's as good of a back-to-back run of top tier OL prospects as I've ever seen Michigan land. Sprague and Babalola are both absolute unicorn franchise left tackle type prospects. Frazier, Haywood, and Gach all could play guard or tackle. Hamilton better try to see if he can learn how to play center.
you start at QB first and then build in the trenches. Moore was gifted an excellent 2024 OL class by Jeem and then he just recruited another excellent one in 2025 and oh yeah he also landed the #1 QB/#1 player in the nation. There's a lot to build on right there. 2026 the offense could be something special if Bryce and that OL develop and you get a RB backfield of Jordan Marshall & Justice Haynes.
