Why Neyland's maxims are recited before Tennessee football games under Josh Heupel

Gen. Robert Neyland's seven maxims (https://utsports.com/news/2010/9/22/seven_pillars_of_tennessee_football.aspx) are gospel for Tennessee football (https://www.knoxnews.com/sports/govolsxtra/), and coach Josh Heupel makes sure his players remain faithful to them.
Heupel said the Vols recite Neyland's pillars for winning football before each game. And during preseason practice of this undefeated 2022 season, he said players learned the history of Neyland, the program's all-time winningest coach, during meetings designed for that purpose.
It's a tip of the hat to Tennessee's rich football history and the legendary coach.

Incidentally -- I doubt anybody's noticed, or cared, but I've probably set a personal record for post count the past couple of days.
Tuesday, mid afternoon, I suddenly had that feeling: dang, am I coming down with something?
At my age, it's hard to tell sometimes. Just getting old? Post stress, from my little pooch's mishap that I wrote about on Monday?
We were scheduled to go to bar trivia with our neighbors from Maine at 6pm. Always fun. I told my wife, at 4:30, that I wasn't sure I could make it. That bar burger and tots, much anticipated the night before, wasn't appealing at ALL. Nor were the couple of pints I usually have with it. Nor sitting in an uncomfortable chair, with a bar full of noisy patrons. All of which was an anticipated outing, 24 hours earlier.
I decided to go for my 15-minute power walk, and see if that invigorated me, or depleted me.
The latter. Made it halfway. Decided "that'll do."
Don't know what this is, but it's laid me low. Only a low-grade fever, but feels much worse. All I've done is lay in bed. I think I'm feeling better, get up -- in five minutes, I'm looking for my bed again. I've got enough energy to watch TV, read, post -- that's it. Sleep a few hours, wake, check the computer, dilly-dally with the Whateverist faction, post links, make little observations...
It passes the time. I think I'm heading north of this thing now. I better be. Big game Saturday. Gotta get my game face on.
I've got a Covid test that I'm going to take a little later on...
This is far from the worst thing I've ever had -- just real strong fatigue, mainly. Nothing respiratory. A little nausea -- I was afraid of a noro virus for a little while -- but kept my cookies.
Anyway -- THAT's why my name is all over the board. And my contributions approaching Cincy numbers (LOL).
Be glad to get back to normal...

Prayers for a speedy recovery
As to post count, I think you are a long way from the record holder, maybe even a long way from his top 25+.

LOL -- thanks, bro.
I got curious --
since 6:30 or so Tuesday -- by which time admitted I was sick, we passed on going to trivia (thank the good Lord I had that much sense -- prolly wouldn't have, 10, even 5 years ago) --
I've made 29(!) posts (not bad...). This is my 30th.
So, let's call that two full days, and change. 15 per day, for convenience (and some good 'uns, if I do say so myself... that "Close Your Eyes..." one is for the archives..., lol).
A thousand days gets me to 15K; three thousand get me to 45K; four gets me to 60K --
so at my recent rate (plus my current 3.3K), I pass Cincy's current 57K, comfortably!
Quite an achievement.
And, if I keep up the pace, I can get there in just under 11 years!
I think I've just set a goal.
Of course, by then Cap'n Obvious will be up to 7 million or so...
(EDIT):
Got to thinking about it --
60K posts -- that might be as many as five "likes"! :great:
-
holy cow, you HAVE been posting!

holy cow, you HAVE been posting!
Yup. #31 --
Just got out of the shower.
Here's how you know you're off your feed --
usually, you get out of the shower, you feel refreshed, invigorated--
I couldn't wait to lie down.
I don't feel too bad when I do -- just tired as hell when I don't.
Laid down, grabbed the laptop, saw your post...
Still haven't taken the Covid test. I'm going to rest a bit, then do so. Then watch a DVR'd news show or two with the wife. My schedule's a little messed up. I NEVER make morning posts, since I retired -- till today.
My next door neighbors have both been down. I saw them yesterday, when I staggered outside to check on my poor ol' pup. They were both better -- went to vote that day. He said his started Thursday. And yesterday was the first day he'd felt worth a damn. He also said he had a high fever, though. Both tested negative for Covid.
Ugh. I hope I don't have nearly a week of this. I'd almost rather be sick as a dog for three days, and get it over with...
I bet you guys don't, either. ( ^ ;
LOL -- ain't I interesting?

Over 85k posts in a day is impressive, sir!

Awww, that ain't nuthin'...
seriously -- what th--?

Yeah I had a feeling it was pretty bad when you went 3 consecutive posts without mentioning godless, m2m whateverists.
You just make sure you're coherent mid-afternoon tomorrow, and squarely in front of a large-screen, high-definition television.

Thanks, fellers, for the well-wishes.
13 straight hours of bed rest. About 6-7 of semi-awake, and semi-nauseas, with what felt like a rotting log in my gut. And a brain that wouldn’t shut up.
96K posts. That may be a little over-sharing.
It may be time to curtail activity a bit.
The weird thing — I checked my log. About 93K of ‘em are in Russian.
I guess I can look forward to FBI agents at the front door…
What kind of connections does Cincy have?

It will be interesting to see if Auburn tries to find a coach with an offensive style similar to that of Coach H, and how many other teams try it out (Nebraska? Purdue?).

Let them.
Anybody can buy a Stradivarius, Fender Strat, or set of Callaways.
Doesn't mean you're gonna be able to do anything with 'em.
It's not just the system. It's the man running it.
Heup is a champion, a winner. Proven. He's still at the beginning of his HC career. I think we're watching him grow into, inhabit his role as a top flight coach. If things hold together (I feel obliged to make that caveat), he stands to get better. He's going to be a force to be reckoned with, for quite awhile.
That's what I think.
I saw a KNS article on Yahoo. A comment pointed out that Jimbo Fisher and Mel Tucker had early success, too.
I don't see a comparison.
Fisher was groomed to take over a powerhouse that, like UT, had suffered decline. He hit big in his 4th year. Then dropped off. Gradually, at first. He let the culture slip away. Looks like TAMU might be undergoing a similar fate, without grabbing the brass ring.
Tucker? Mich. St.? Don't know. Don't care.
Heup appears to me to be quiet, confident, capable, competent. Teams take on the character of their coaches.
Glad to have him. Long live Coach Heup!
BTW -- my neighbor, who works for DHEC and was in epidemiology for awhile, says there's a strain of H3N2 type A going around. I guess that's what he and his wife have been dealing with -- still not completely over it.
I'm wondering if maybe I got a low viral load of it. Hence the relative lack of fever (100, max, briefly). Don't know. Covid test was negative.
Still feel like crap, though. Fatigue. Big time.

Thing is, foozball (it's of the devil!) Is ever flowing dynamic... it isnt static. O's come and go and come back again. Same with Ds. Over and over.
I blame Osborne at Nebraska for the rise of SEC D... the embarrassed coaches sealed up the perimeter... scouted and secured mid sized LB that could play safety and vice versa... they took the triple option away, and Playaction with it. Meyer arrived with the spread option and it clicked for a bit but was solved. Here comes Huep with this tempo+stack... is there a name for it yet? We should make one... it simply won't be long until it's solved.
Great coaches flow with the dynamic.... they don't try to lock down a thing... Ala saban..Saban... not Meyer, who was sent packing... today, O trumps D. Whodathinkit? All ya gotta do is get the right D on the field and then not let them off. Lame kitten solved it by flopping. The league didn't address it. I'm wondering if this is smarts intentions tomorrow?
There will soon come a coach- hot as fire- known for a gimmick O... the game will be tight formations with dual set TE's, this thing called a FB and this other thing called a HB, and a QB who can run. Theyll run forward behind corn fed linemen known for taking up space rather than being fast or strong, and when they get 3.5 yards they'll run out of gas and lay over... and take the full clock to regroup just to run the same play again. As soon as a D is encountered with meat enough to make a wall, they'll do something strange whichbis hurl the ball to one of those TEs a safety thinks is lost.... and when he catches the ball inbounds and five yards deep he'll just kinda flop over. Possessions will return to two maybe three a quarter on average, and there will be some single possession quarters.... all the talent in terms of stars will be on the D- and they'll actually keep the scoring from happening.. novel concept.
I dont know that ^ is what's going to happen in five years, but it'll be something akin to that. Dynamics.. fluid transition.
In the meantime, I'll enjoy what the man has done. Its a big deal for me to appreciate college football again with a team that contends... even more so because I never abandoned them.

The T Hooker Hype (play on huepal+hyper) offense?
The Hyper T stack?

I hear ya.
And of course, there will be adjustments. I hope Kirby is not smart enough to make them tomorrow.
You can stop anybody with enough 3 and outs, of course. But ESPECIALLY this offense. Which once it gets rolling, just keeps you on your heels, trying to regroup. The Dawgs force 3 or 4 early, get up a couple of scores -- long day.
But you STILL can't count us out.
As with politics, in coaching character counts.
Kiffin lacks it. I predict he will never have LASTING success.
Dooley, Butch, Pruitt -- whatever they're personal traits, I don't know and am not judging them -- were clown shows as coaches.
I like the cut of Heup's jib. He's smart, savvy, unflappable, and close to the vest.
Whatever's next, I'll make a small wager that he's able to figure it out, and jump on it.

Thing is, and I say this carefully...
UGA ain't built for what they're about to encounter. They're built as a giant muscle with far more fast twitch fibers than endurance... their entire premise is a copy of Bama, which is to work you over for three quarters and step ahead in the fourth... against stout competition this is what they do. Against patsies they just goof around and have fun...
But UGA ain't made for what they're about to encounter... repeated, yes. Bama thought they were. They absolutely had the structure and talent, but there is the matter of confusion- which is what the heuperT (see what I did there?) Is all about. Even the best secondary components and best coaches were confused.... thats saying something.
UT will score. A lot.. UGA will too... UT is comfortable in that dynamic with the HeuperT (again!) Where UGA hasn't seen it yet.
I like UT by 14+.
Oh... there was a moment in the bama game when score was 27-20... fant I think it was dropped a pass with nothing but grass between him amd the checkers... they had to punt. W/o that happening and that one pass completed whether he scored or not that is a different game and one bama isn't made to play--- just like UGA ain't. Comfort zone is the name of the game... so far, the heuperT (doh!) Has done that to everyone they've played... UF had their own bag of fourth down tricks else that wouldn't have been close either...

Allow me to give that analysis -- which I think is extraordinary --
a plus 1,000.
Hell -- make it 96 thousand!

Has anyone thought of the possibility of playing Bama 3 times this year.
Both UT and Bama win tomorrow and both win out .
We meet in the SECG championship game and Bama wins.
Both would easily get into the play-offs and then meet again either in the 1st round or championship game.
Awsome!

If you say so.
Once is enough for me.
Though I have often thought how wrong it is that the two great, legendary programs have never met in the SECCG.
And recently realized our contribution to their unprecedented success the last decade and a half.
I saw a segment on SECN -- I'm pretty sure they've had 11 regular season losses the last 15 years.
If we'd held up our end of the bargain -- and the rivalry -- if we had only one 1 in 3 against them --
that's 16.
And they'd have had a mid season loss pegged on 'em every third year or so.
Doesn't derail the juggernaut --
but would've slowed it down a little.

I think I would prefer Ole Piss also but the media would have a field day at a 3rd game being for the NC

IMO, we owe Lane
Harder to beat a team twice or three times in a single season.
Yes it would be cool to beat them twice. I don't think Bama would get in the playoffs with two losses

A side note..My wife got her Masters Degree at Ole Ms ( undergrad at UT). She used to root for Ole Ms anytime they played anyone but UT.
When Kiffen went to Ole Piss , she now roots for anyone playing against OM.

I use to work with a guy who played WR for old Miss when Archie was there. Sometime when I have the time and I remember I will PM you a story he told.

Programs looking for a coach to bring them back will pay close attention to the Vols, even if somehow they finish 11-2 (which is about the worst I think they plauibly could do at this point). Maybe an OC somewhere has the ability to install something similar quickly.
