Title: Maryland (0-1, 3-1) at #4 Michigan (1-0, 4-0) Post Game
Post by: Temp430 on September 19, 2022, 08:52:21 AM
This game is on Fox at Noon EDT.  Michigan steps out of the morgue and finally gets an opponent with a pulse.  Maryland's offense should be a good test for the Wolverine's largely untested defense.  Michigan is favored by 17.5 points.

Michigan injures include backup QB McNamara, RB Edwards, and likely OL Keegan and OL Barnhart.

the line is up to 20 now. Maryland can play some offense, so it should test the D quite a bit. Michigan probably isn't going to get credit for playing anyone until they face Penn State.

The players don’t control the schedule.

The Wolverines have done exactly what great teams do to horrible teams: the bury them.

They look extremely well coached and prepared- and that’s all you could ask of them.

Lastly- they are getting full credit for who they beat.  They are ranked in the top 4 and several of our forum members here have them #1 in the big.

SMU is the only team the Terps(3-0) faced with a pulse. And if they have 15 penalties like they did against the Mustangs this goes in the L column. If not maybe interesting for 3 qtrs but the Wolvies are at home

I'd like to see them open things up more with the downfield passing attack. JJ has yet to really be let loose for 4 QTRs and push the ball down the field constantly. I realize they really haven't had to do that...but it's about to get into the meat of the B1G schedule and I'd like to see them give JJ more reps doing that vs live bullets. They're going to need JJ to sling it all over the field vs your Penn State's, MSU's, Iowa's, and Ohio State's. Might as well start getting that work in this week.

caveats apply...Michigan hasn't really played anyone...but PFF really loves themselves some JJ McCarthy. I loved the kid after that ridiculous throw he made vs Western Michigan where he broke a tackle, rolled out to his right and then threw a ball on freaking frozen rope at least 50+ yards in the air all the way across the entire football field which is 53 1/3 yards wide. Seen a lot of great from him since then in spurts. He's had plenty of WOW throws. He just might have the best arm talent in the entire country.

bit of 'crootin' news...and this one is WAY out, but 2025 early 5* QB Bryce Underwood of Belleville, MI will be visiting for this game.

Kind of blows my mind that the state of Michigan will produce 5* QB's in back to back to back classes considering the state of Michigan isn't really known for it's HS talent and the last 5* QB it produced was in 1998 with Drew Henson. They've had a run of some 4*'s- but no OMG FIVE STARZZZZ!

Dante Moore (5*, #4 QB, #7 player overall) in 2023, CJ Carr (5*, #3 QB, #13 player overall) in 2024, and Bryce Underwood (5*, #1 QB, #3 player overall) in 2025. Those are the 247Composite rankings for each player by the way.

Underwood is said to be the most talented of the bunch. By a lot. Kid is a freakish athlete- other two are not that- and he's got a bigger arm than either as well- and he's youngest of the bunch- which means- should only grow and mature physically and mentally and get better.

If Harbaugh doesn't land Underwood he really just needs to jump off a bridge. How you have THREE 5* QB's in your state in back to back to back classes and wind up with NONE is inexcusable. Especially coming off a B1G championship and college football playoff appearance.

they have played each other 10 times, with Michigan holding a 9-1 edge. Scores were:

1985: Michigan- 20, Maryland-0
1989: Michigan- 41, Maryland- 21
1990: Michigan- 45, Maryland- 17
2014: Maryland- 23, Michigan- 16
2015: Michigan- 28, Maryland- 0
2016: Michigan- 59, Maryland- 3
2017: Michigan- 35, Maryland- 10
2018: Michigan- 42, Maryland- 21
2019: Michigan- 38, Maryland- 7
2021: Michigan- 59, Maryland- 18

Locksley is 0-3 vs Jim Harbaugh at Maryland (he was the interim HC in 2015) with average ppg in those 3 games being Michigan: 41.67 pts and Maryland: 8.33 pts

It's still a mystery how good Michigan's defense is.  Maybe they're above Big Ten average, I doubt they're as good as Georgia's as UConn's coach implied.  Michigan's offense was expected to be very good and has looked it but there are issues.  A couple injuries to OL, RB #2 out, QB #2 out, another starter injury rumored.  Both sides are a work in progress.  I don't think Michigan covers in this game.

Maryland 24
Michigan  38

Could be off, but I just don't think Maryland is all that good, especially on defense. I think Michigan covers. By a lot. I think McCarthy is going to have himself a big day and Michigan wins something like 45-21.

We all know by this point in the season we really don't know much for certain.  If you compare week 3 rankings with final any year you see anomalies.

UGA has looked solid, so far, emphasis on so far.  They have Kent State tomorrow so we won't learn anything from that I suspect.

But they have some definite possible trips down the road of course.

I think we know enough about the top.  We know who will be in or nearly in the CFP.  Will a currently unranked team go 9-3 and reach the top 12ish?  Sure

This is the biggest question imo. I think Maryland has a decent offense so we’ll learn a lot about the defense. I also think Michigan’s offense is a well oiled Machine with JJ out there so I expect Michigan to put up a lot of points. The closeness of this one will be determined by the D. I expect Michigan to cover.

I do have some reservations about Michigan's offense.  The OL needs to get healthy and better.  RT Jones is a work in progress.  I also think they need a big RB like Haskins.  I haven't drank the Corum is a good inside runner KoolAid.  Maybe Edwards can do it once he's healed up?

***BIG TEN GAME OF THE WEEK***
Maryland Terrapins (3-0) at #4 Michigan Wolverines (3-0)
NOON - Ann Arbor, MI - FOX
Good September Maryland is tired at this point, we know they are going to collapse once the clock strikes October.  Problem is, it's still September.  Michigan's defense lost a lot from last year, and literally faced 3 of the 10 worst teams in the FBS according to SP+.  All that means is that we don't KNOW anything.  But we can THINK anything we want, and I think Michigan's defense will be fine.  It might be their worst defense in the past few years, but I think this will be their best offense, maybe ever.  Donovan Edwards, who I've said before is a cheat code, is a massive loss.  I think he's the most talented offensive weapon in the Big Ten, but against the defense, I don't think I care.  I think Michigan would have to be down 14-0 for Jim Harbaugh to even consider going back to McNamera, but with him hurt, there is nobody looking over McCarthy's shoulder.  Might he throw a pair of dumb interceptions?  Sure.  Might he also throw for 350 yards?  Absolutely.  Two turnovers, Michigan should be fine.  Once you start getting to -3 or greater, well now we've got a game.  Maryland is excelling at dominating the takeaway game.  The Terps are also giving the ball away, but they are playing loose on defense.  That will likely mean a couple of giveaways for J.J. McCarthy in his first meaningful start, but it will also mean a couple of chances to exploit.  Mike Locksley has switched to a more balanced approach this year, which means if this is still a game in the second quarter, the Terps are more comfortable playing it out.  Maryland is averaging nearly 8 fewer pass attempts this year.  I think Michigan jumps out quickly.  I don't see how Maryland stops them.  That puts Maryland back into a pass first offense, and while they have the receivers to win that battle, I don't see them having the defense to come from behind in Ann Arbor.
MICHIGAN 41, MARYLAND 22

I think that @ELA (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=55) 's analysis is, as usual, spot on. I see this as the kind of game where Maryland really needs some combination of:

Honestly, I don't even think that any one of the above would be enough. They need two out of three.

You are just some kind of worry wart my dude. This OL will wind up being even better than last years. The OL is just fine. They've been dealing with minor injuries to a couple of starters. Nothing major. They'll all be good to go for B1G play. The only weak spot on the entire offense that I've seen if you want to call it that is Trente Jones at RT. He's a brand new starter- he's given up some pressures in pass pro- but has been a mauler in run game. The OL spots from LT-LG-C-RG are ROCK freaking solid- best that Michigan has had in literally like DECADES. Ryan Hayes, Trevor Keegan, and Zak Zinter are all gonna be BETTER this year and they got a major upgrade at center with Olu Oluwatimi- dude might be the best center in America.

As far as their RB's go- well that's just silly talk. They have an INSANE RB backfield with Corum & Edwards and CJ Stokes is going to be WAY better than his recruit rankings- just like Haskins was.

This offense was missing it's best skill player period last year- WR Ronnie Bell- dude is back and working his way back into form and looks excellent. Their WR/TE talent and depth is fantastic.

And to top it all off- they got a MAJOR upgrade at the most important spot on the entire team- QB. JJ McCarthy is going to be a flat out STUD. Don't believe me just watch.

YAWN.

Blake Corum is by far the most explosive RB they've had in decades and he ran for like 50 yards just shy of 1k yards while splitting carries and missing 3-4 games with a high ankle sprain. I've been watching Michigan football forever.....Donovan Edwards just might be the most talented RB they've ever had. Dude was OMERG 5 STARZZZ for a reason. Dude was just a true frosh last year and behind Haskins and Corum- two pretty damn good older players. He will be unleashed this year. They are A OK at RB.

Ronnie Bell is the best WR on their team. By far. They were without him the entire year last year. He's back. Their WR/TE depth behind him is excellent. Best it's been since Harbaugh has been in Michigan. LG Trevor Keegan was a RS Soph and first time starter last year. RG Zak Zinter was a RS Frosh and first time starter last year. Stands to reason those guys will only get better, NO? And they were pretty fkn good last year. Their new center Olu Oluwatimi was the runner up to the Rimmington Award and an All-American last year. Their center last year Varstardis was a solid college player- but nowhere in Oluwatimi's universe as an individual player. The interior of their OL is going to be better than it was a year ago. Can't remember the last time they had an interior OL that freaking experienced and talented. Been forever. Have to go back to the Lloyd Carr days.

Last but not least- the most important position on the field- the main man pulling the trigger- is going to be A LOT better than what they had last year. JJ McCarthy is just flat out different- that's why he beat Cade McNamara- a pretty decent starting SENIOR B1G level QB that just QB'd this program to a B1G 'chip and beat the Buckeyes last year. I've been watching Michigan football forever. Only QB you can compare JJ to on a talent level is Drew Henson. JJ is not quite Drew Henson level- but damn he is close.

In summation: their offense will be A OK as long as Harbaugh stays out of the way. It's the defense that I am worried about.

Haskins and Hart weren’t exactly explosive or fast…awesome RBs though. Higdon had a little bit of explosion to him, but wasn’t really that elusive and his top end speed wasn’t elite. Corum has elite top end speed.

Sixty minutes of adversity was just what Michigan needed.  Maryland played well, Michigan has stuff to clean up in its passing game.  WRs didn’t seem to know what to do next when the planned route wasn’t open.

Thoughts on the game: Michigan played like ass and still won that game comfortably. Maryland had 15 penalties the week before vs SMU. Didn’t have a single penalty vs Michigan. That tells me they were dialed in and focused and got up to play Michigan. That’s not going to happen every week for them- they’ll go back to getting penalties.

Michigan kicker Jake Moody missed a chip shot FG for him and that’s not going to probably happen again all season as he’s automatic. Kid is a fantastic kicker- was  shocked when he shanked a 45 yarder left.

JJ played a pretty mediocre game- but still threw for 220, 69+% completion and 2 TD vs 0 INT. Like I said- if that’s his worst- Michigan is in good shape. JJ was way too amped up- he was trying to do too much and play hero ball- and really got lucky he didn’t lose a couple fumbles or have a disaster play. And he left 21 points on that field by missing 3 deep go routes where his WRs toasted the DBs crispy and he flat out overthrew it. He connects on those 3 throws- which all 3 drives wound up in punts- that’s 21 more points on the scoreboard. He just needed to settle down and play within himself and just run the offense- and live to fight another down and throw the ball away if nothing was there.

Play calling and pass scheme vs all that zone coverage sure as hell didn’t help him- but he’s got to make those deep throws in man on 1 on 1’s- which he has basically done literally every single time before yesterday since day one- which is why I think that yesterday was an aberration and not a trend. You can maybe tell now why they held off on handing him the reigns last year as a true frosh- Cade can’t make any of the plays JJ can- but Cade also doesn’t try to do too much or play hero ball. JJ has to cut that shit out. JJ has a lot to learn from this game and grow from. Fully confident in JJ, he will bounce back and grow from this game. That type of game could be exactly what the doctor ordered for this young buck.

Officially concerned about Michigan RB depth. They only have 3 guys apparently that can actually play- and one of them- Donovan Edwards has been out for 2 weeks with injury. The freshman CJ Stokes fumbled the ball once this game and we never saw him again. They were playing a 175 pound walk-on over Stokes. They need Edwards back- which he should be next week- and they need to recruit RBs HARD in 2023 and 2024.

OL was great, despite missing starter Trevor Keegan at LG. His replacement Giovanni El-Hadi looks like a real player- kid was a high 4* top 100 recruit and you expect those type of players to be good- and he was.

TEs are a mixed bag. They are missing Erick All something fierce- he’s the best TE they’ve had since Butt and it’s not close- and rumors are he may be done for this year- which just absolutely sucks. It’s almost like Michigan just can’t have nice things apparently. He is a beast in the middle of the field and run after the catch- and he’s their best blocking TE.

Maryland has a really good offense with a very good college QB and bunch of WRs who will play in the NFL. Also have pretty good OL and RBs. Michigan was never going to shut them down. The Michigan secondary balled out- they looked elite- especially when you consider they got ZERO help from their DL. And that’s what I really took away from this game- their edge rushers SUCK. Aside from Mazi Smoth and true frosh Mason Graham, Michigan DL is booty.

JJ and that offense will work out the kinks. He’s not going to miss all his deep throws every game. They are just too talented. Edwards will come back soon and make that offense way more multiple, dangerous, and explosive and help take the load off Corum. Keegan will come back soon and fortify and already strong OL.

The Michigan DL is absolutely concerning and I’m not quite in panic mode on that defense just yet- but nearly there.

Yeah and if my grandmother had wheels she’d be a bicycle. Ifs and whats are for losers.

Can play the same game in reverse- have to wonder what this game looks like if Moody makes one of the automatic FGs he literally always makes instead of shanking it and if JJ connects on 3 go routes on 3 different drives that all ended in punts- and they would’ve all been 6- instead of overthrowing them by a mile when his receivers burnt Maryland DBs to a crisp- there’s 24 more points on the scoreboard for Michigan.

keep repeating that and you'll be dissipointed. That TD before the half at least 2 lineman were held/holding one practically tackled. The gimme K.O. recovery right off the bat was a the difference. Taulia Tagovailoa getting injured in the 4th put the squeeze on the Terps. It was the 1st team that showed up to play with talent to compete vs M,so it took them out of script/rythm

That’s such a great observation and comment. There were times the O-line gave JJ all day and the receivers were just confused what to do.

Could go either way. Michigan could either end up losing the game, or 7 points in the first 3 seconds takes away the hunger you came out of the locker room with and replaces it with a false sense of an easy day.

I thought both interceptions were questionable and the fact neither were reviewed was a travesty. That Maryland offense will challenge people this year if Taulia is healthy.

No one knows that answer as they haven’t publicly stated if it’s Weiss or Moore. Regardless, Harbaugh has his fingers all over the play calling and has since day one at Michigan. These offensive abortions of offenses during his tenure at Michigan have been his offenses- no one else’s.

Yeah and I think Michigan may have blown them out if JJ hits his deep balls and Moody doesn’t shank a FG left.

We can always play what ifs. Only thing we can talk about is what actually happened.

And I wouldn’t assume anything- as Taulia ALWAYS throws interceptions and forces balls. That’s exactly who he is and always has been. He’s played A LOT of football and still has never learned to get rid of those bad habits. That’s just who he is at this point. Really good college QB- but he’ll never be elite or what his brother was because: he does dumb shite.

I thought Turner’s INT was questionable- but that’s on Locksley- he had 3 TO’s he could’ve burned one and made them review it or challenged the call. He chose not to. As far as RJ Moten’s INT goes- there was no question about it- that was an INT and it was a DUMB play by Taulia to force a ball into double coverage down the field to try and make the big play when he had a TE wide open underneath that would’ve been a sure first down. Again, that’s who that guy is- he’s way overconfident in his ability. He plays like he has Josh Allen’s arm strength- he doesn’t.

That’s such a great observation and comment. There were times the O-line gave JJ all day and the receivers were just confused what to do.
See: Brandon Jacobs quote on Harbaugh being an offensive illiterate…route concepts and route conversions and all that jazz.

Joel Klatt nailing it….Michigan has major issues with its route adjustments/conversions vs zone coverage and major issues with its play calling which he goes into detail here…

Speaking to the press about the upcoming B1G matchup with Iowa, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh praised Corum’s play, saying the RB makes opponents miss “by the narrowest of margins.” Harbaugh believes that ability puts Corum in a special group of running backs and said Corum gets so close he “can smell their breath” before cutting.

I don’t know how it’s possible- but every time this freak opens his gd mouth to talk to the media he just comes across as an even bigger weirdo.

I guess I'm a weirdo as well.  Harbaugh's comment about "breath" seems okay to me, and painted a perfect picture of what he meant...

Jim strikes me as the kind of guy that doesn't wear deodorant and likes the smell of his own farts.

I was at a function where he spoke once (related to a bad bowl game at the end of a bad season).

I don't know that I've been made more uncomfortable by a person's presence. It leads me to a lot of questions about how he assembles teams and how much people in the world let things slide. (I've read he was more normal in his SF days, FWIW)

fun fact, he doesn't eat chicken because he believes it's a nervous animal, and he believes that humanity has been infected by a sickness ever since they started eating chicken.
