According to wiki (I know) Iowa's OC Brian Ferentz doesn't technically report to HC Kirk Ferentz but rather to Iowa's longtime AD Gary Barta.
Apparently this legal sleight-of-hand had to be employed due to the State of Iowa's anti-nepotism statute.
Frankly, at this point the Brian Ferentz situation is pretty much a textbook example of why Iowa and most (perhaps all) States have laws prohibiting public employees from hiring close family members.
Iowa's offense isn't merely bad, it is comically awful. They are literally last in the nation in ypg and nearly 80 ypg behind the next worst team. They are also dead last in ppg. Even that probably understates the scale if Iowa's offensive struggles because the two scoring drives that Iowa's offense managed to mount so far this year were a 5 yard FG drive and a 16 yard TD drive. Their other four points came from safeties so effectively the Iowa Defense is responsible for all 14 of Iowa's points so far this year.
At what point does Barta tell his HC that said HC's son will no longer be employed by the University of Iowa?
-
Hopefully not for awhile. Now that Frost has been fired, we need to find comic relief elsewhere. This looks like a good place.
-
Brian Ferentz may officially report to Barta, but the idea that Barta has the power to fire Brian Ferentz is laughable. Barta is not going to do anything that Kirk Ferentz does not want. The only thing Barta has a say in is how much the assistants get paid, but even there Barta pretty much does what Kirk tells him to do.
If Barta ever threatened to fire Brian, all Kirk would have to do is threaten to retire and that would be the end of the discussion. Maybe if Iowa goes 5-7 this year, Barta might have the leverage he needs to fire Brian.
-
when you are that bad, it has to be a recruiting issue as well and not just a coaching one. Iowa's QB and skill talent seem to be seriously lacking. That's putting it nicely. Iowa doesn't always have elite skill talent, but they usually have way better skill talent than this.

At some point that becomes a risk worth taking. At some point Barta (or maybe his superiors) need to make the decision that if Kirk decides to make it a choice between two Ferentz and zero Ferentz they are willing to call that bluff.
-
Does the buyout go away if Kirk resigns?
If so... bring it.

Agreed, at some point it is time.
I say this realizing what Kirk Ferentz has done for Iowa and that he is not only the longest tenured HFC in the B1G but nationally as well.
It would be different if Iowa's offense was merely poor but at this point poor would be a substantial upgrade.
-
confess I have not watched a lot of Iowa this season
is the issues schematic or lack of players>? the QB seems to be awful
they are the only team not using the transfer portal much does that have anything to do the lack luster?
-
They lost receivers - probably due to the offense they were in.

Only if he agrees do it.
… which no one would.

Legally Brian Ferentz works for Barta not Kirk so Barta can fire him. At that point Kirk Ferentz' only recourse would be to resign in protest. The resignation would obviate the buyout.
The above is my understanding and *COULD* be wrong.
-
I like your understanding the guy has milked the school & state for more than he could have possibly hoped for.If he is that punch drunk or stubborn he can't see the obvious problem well I hope brian gets the axe before I'm done typing this

Lucky you, trying to watch an Iowa game is worse than watching paint dry. At least the safeties and blocked punts are kind of exciting
Anway if you need a better example of is it lack of skill or is schematic, all you have to do is look at WR Charlie Jones. Look at what he did at Iowa vs what he is doing after he transferred to Purdue this year.
The main problem is the schematic drives away good WR's.

A competent athletic director would have confronted Brian Ferentz in January 2022, and told him, you are out. Brian Ferentz is also a defendant in a lawsuit filed by former players. How much longer can you double down and triple down on such incompetence?
B.F. was given the job of QB coach this year, in addition to Offensive Coordinator. B.F. was a center, and he was a good one. He knows a lot about how the offensive line works. He obviously knows nothing about quarterbacking.
The main problem is the schematic drives away good WR's.
WRs Charlie Jones and Tyrone Tracy both left Iowa for Purdue. “It’s pretty simple, I came here for the offense,” Jones said to GoldandBlack.com, which is the Rivals site for Purdue. “The past couple years they’ve shown that being a receiver in this type of offense means a lot of opportunities.” Charlie Jones explains why he transferred from Iowa to Purdue - Hawk Fanatic (https://hawkfanatic.com/2022/08/22/charlie-jones-explains-why-he-transferred-from-iowa-to-purdue/) Jones knew the limitations of the Iowa offense and its QBs.

John Budmayr is on staff, past QBs coach at Wisc., past QB at Wisc., and past offensive coordinator at Colorado State. He is an analyst, and not a coach. I don't know what that position entails but I suspect it means he can't be on the practice field.
It would be a very simple midseason adjustment to promote Budmayr to QB coach and Offensive Coordinator, and terminate Brian Ferentz.
If the offense improves then keep Budmayr; if not hire Scott Frost as offensive coordinator and QB coach for next season, and make sure he knows that the Iowa way is ball security, and that you do not give up 3 turnovers a game as was done in the Iowa State game. Nebraska's offense scored quite a bit under him; it was the turnovers, lack of defense, and underperforming special teams that were the troubles for him at Nebraska.
-
I'm guessing Kirk has threatened to do something much worse than resignation
-
I get a VERY strong feeling that Kirk doesn't like Frost

LoL.
It is actually worse than that. Iowa is now favored by 24 with an over/under of 40 suggesting a final score of 32-8 Hawkeyes. I don't think this Iowa offense could score 32 points against a peewee defense.
-
I might just place a wager on nevada and the under, and I'm not a betting man
-
Can't legally gamble here in FL, but that +24 for Nevada is so juicy. Would definitely bet that if I could.

I did not know that.
No sports books, even at those Seminole Casinos?

I'm at the Grand Falls Casino in Iowa
sportsbook
but I'd have to drive the 90 miles back up here to collect

That got shut down back in 2021. I think it lasted about 2 months. They're going to revisit things in 2023.
-
Got it. I'm not a gambler at all so I would not know. Interesting though.
-
I don't bet a lot, but if I'm in a state that allows it, I'll throw in a few $20 bets. I put in 10 or so $5 bets for over/under win totals while I was in PA over the summer. I'll probably bet a few games when I'm in PA for the Ohio State - Penn State game in October.
-
I'd do it, but I don't want to be responsible for jumpstarting their offense and saying Brian's job

You don't Brian forever?
Go do it.

Agreed. Nevada and the under both seem to good to be true.

Can't legally drive 80 there either, but I think we can sneak it in once and a while.
-
It's crazy to think how close Nevada is to being 3-0 coming into its game with Iowa. Nevada started 2-0 against NMSU and Texas St. Then blew a 14-pt lead and ended up losing to FCS UIW.
of course, either way Nevada is considered awful, having not beaten anybody remotely good.
-
I see Charlie Jones just caught another TD pass for Purdue

Yes, but Iowa will probably win more games. Purdue makes too many dumb mistakes.

Lucky for you.

Charlie Jones stats
3 years at Iowa - 21 recs, 323 yds., 3 TD's
First 3 games at Purdue - 32 recs, 474 yds. 5 TD's
Brian Ferentz was clearly wasting the potential of at least one guy on the Iowa team. Jones had already proven at Iowa he can consistently catch the ball and has the speed to get open and get yards after the catch. It was a mystery to me he was not getting more targets at Iowa.
