3 conference games this week or last that all involved late comebacks for wins. PSU-Pur, Ind-ILL, NW-Neb. In each case I put the winner just 1 spot higher than the loser.
1. OSU -solid win, especially for the defense, over #5 team in country.
2. Mich - dominating win
3. MSU - passed their first test
4. Wisc - passed their first test
5. Minn - passed their first test
6. PSU - not sure if Clifford is the answer, but he got the job done this time on the road in the clutch.
7. Pur - defense has some issues. Sloppy tacking gave up a lot of yards after the catch. Brahm needs to work on clock management late in games.
8. Iowa - historically bad performance on offense against FCS team. Defense and special teams saved the day again. But not sure if the defense can save the day every time.
9. Rut - give them credit for come from behind win over P5 team
10. MD - tough to grade until they play somebody good.
11. IND - give them credit for pulling out late victory at home.
12. ILL - had several chances to put Indy away and blew it.
13. NW - just barely better than Neb
14. Neb - just does not seem like a team that's going to win a lot of games

- Ohio State - I am ecstatic about the way they won this game. If they can play like this the rest of the season, they will be very hard to beat.
- Michigan - The Defense looked very good, what little I saw of the game. By the time I turned it on, it was already out of hand. Still want to see how they do against good competition.
- Wisconsin - Hard to guage this team based on their opponent. I guess 3rd is a good a place as any to put them.
- Penn State - Quality win over Purdue which I believe has potential this year.
- Purdue - Played PSU tough at home. I can see this team with 8 or 9 wins this year.
- Michigan State - Did not look all that impressive against a directional school from that State up North.
- Minnesota - Took care of business as they should have.
- Maryland - Beat Buffalo as they should.
- Iowa - Still no signs of life for their offense. Will have to win games with Defense this year . . . . again.
- Northwestern - Beat Nebraska in a close game. Did score some points, so for now, it appears that the offense has improved.
- Rutgers - Beat a decent BC team. Another win like this and they could move up a little higher.
- Indiana - Looked pretty good over Illinois. They are better than I would have thought.
- Illinois - Looked better agains their cupcake than Nebraska did against theirs.
- Nebraska - Scott Frost's seat must be feeling pretty warm right now.

1) Ohio State - Room to improve, but got a quality win.
2) Penn State - Defense looked really good. Quality win on the road. Clifford just needs to be a bit more consistent.
3) Michigan - Ranking is based more on past performance. May not know much for awhile.
4) Wisconsin - We'll know a lot more next week, but a good start.
5) Purdue - Kind of difficult to say who to put here. Boilers played good enough to win and we know how they can play against a good team.
6) Minnesota - Another team with a big win against lousy competition.
7) Michigan State - A bit of a choppy performance at times.
8) Rutgers - This may not last, but that was a very nice win.
9) Maryland - It is September
10) Nebraska - Get right game
11) Iowa - Ugly.
12) Illinois - You've gotta win that game
13) Northwestern - Bye
14) Indiana - Worst team, but pulled the upset.

Last week in parentheses
- OHIO STATE (1) - and yet in the end it's a double digit win over a top 5 team
- MICHIGAN (2) - and now begins the J.J. McCarthy era
- WISCONSIN (3) - FCS win
- PENN STATE (5) - very nice win in a hostile environment, but the run game has a lot of work to do
- MICHIGAN STATE (4) - Payton Thorne looked off all night
- MINNESOTA (7) - did what they were expected to
- IOWA (6) - sadly, maybe they did too?
- PURDUE (8) - that is a game they are going to be kicking themselves over if they come up just shy of a division title
- INDIANA (11) - wasn't pretty, but got it done when they needed to
- MARYLAND (10) - defense may be quite improved
- RUTGERS (14) - a road Power 5 win is a road Power 5 win
- NEBRASKA (9) - ok, maybe they do have issues
- ILLINOIS (12) - see Purdue, except bowl birth rather than division title
- NORTHWESTERN (13) - bye week
-
My preseason rankings in parentheses:
- Ohio State (1), no reason to change.
- Michigan (2), see above.
- Wisconsin (3), see above.
- Penn State (4), nice win but not enough to move up . . . yet.
- Michigan State (5), no reason to change.
- Minnesota (8), this isn't so much about MN moving up as it is about Iowa moving down.
- Purdue (7), a close loss in a winnable game to #4 shouldn't move #7 down.
- Iowa (6), I don't think they can beat a lot of FBS teams without TD's so even this may be way too high.
- Maryland (12), is this just another September Maryland?
- Rutgers (13), you can say it was "only" BC but Rutgers looked a lot better than Iowa and at least BC IS P5 and Rutgers was on the road. This may be too low.
- Northwestern (11), I think their win over UNL was more about UNL than NU but I could be wrong.
- Indiana (10), they beat
- Illinois (9), not a good start.
- Nebraska (14) we'll see.

Interesting weekend coming up for a few teams in the West here. We'll learn a lot more about Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Northwestern.

Interesting weekend coming up for a few teams in the West here. We'll learn a lot more about Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Northwestern.
All of those except Wisconsin are in a big group of teams that we seem to have no idea where to rank.
All or nearly all of us agree on tOSU and M as #1 and #2 respectively. At least half agree on UW, PSU, and UNL as #3, #4, and #14 respectively. There is no consensus on the other nine teams:
- MSU is 5th but votes range from 3-7.
- MN is 6th but votes range from 5-7.
- PU is 7th but votes range from 5-8.
- Iowa is 8th but votes range from 7-11.
- UMD is 9th but votes range from 8-14.
- NU is 10th but votes range from 6-14.
- RU is 11th but votes range from 8-13.
- IU is 12th but votes range from 8-14.
- Illinois is 13th but votes range from 12-14.
