Title: Remaining Undefeated Teams Before Week 0
Post by: ohio1317 on August 23, 2022, 12:51:47 AM
This is the thread for people who love lists. Each week I'll post the teams with their 1st loss and the remaining undefeated teams. As the season progresses, I’ll add a 1-loss team list and a winless team list and note potential bigger games for the various teams. We can see how this lists change through the year.

The winless list is just to watch those teams, but the undefeated and 1-loss lists have been crucial since the start of the BCS. So far, every team to make the BCS National Championship Game/Bowl and the College Football Playoff has been an undefeated or 1-loss team from an AQ/Power 5 conference except for 2007 LSU (had 2 losses) and 2021 Cincinnati (outside a power 5 conference). Every non-AQ/Group of 5 representative to a BCS/NY6 bowl has finished with no more than 1 loss except for 2014 Boise State.

I suspect the days of the usefulness for these lists is getting short, but for now, I think it is still worth watching and our trends will likely continue (although we are overdue for a 2-loss team in the CFP).

Conference changes this year:
-The Big 12 and SEC themselves have not changed yet as a result of the SEC taking Texas and Oklahoma. The follow up domino of the American taking 6 Conference USA schools also does not change anything for this season. The third level effect of the Sun Belt taking Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss is immediate however. Those three will join FBS transitioning James Madison to bring the Sun Belt to 14 members this year. Conference USA will fall to 11 this year.

Future changes: The Big 12 will add 3 new members next year from the American and independent BYU, the American will expand with 6 from Conference USA, Conference USA will add independents Liberty and New Mexico State as well as moving up 2 newcomers to FBS. In 2024, USC and UCLA will join the Big Ten and, in 2025, Texas and Oklahoma will join the SEC. There is a high likelihood of other changes, but that is all official now.

Maximum number of Undefeated Teams at the End of the Regular Season:
14: The 10 conference champs, James Madison (who is not eligible for the Sun Belt Championship), Army, and a maximum of 2 of Notre Dame/BYU/New Mexico State/UMass/Liberty

(Note: As kind of an ode to how long I've been doing this list, while the numbers are from the current conferences, the teams are in order of their conferences from around when I started). Anyone new to FBS after that is listed on the bottom.

Remaining Undefeated Teams: ACC: 14, American: 11, Big 12: 10, Big Ten: 14, Conference USA: 11, MAC: 12, Mountain West: 12, PAC-12: 12, SEC: 14, Sun Belt: 14, independents: 6, total: 131
