Title: Return of The Battle of The River Raisin (SOC 10/30/21)
Post by: MaximumSam on October 30, 2021, 06:05:30 AM
Too much going on this weekend - bunch of ratty kids in the house last night. Some still sleeping. About to go get donuts for them, which they will probably use to throw all over the walls. The wife scored free tickets to the game, I suppose I'll keep her around. I haven't been down to the Horseshoe in forever, pray I will make it there and back. Tomorrow everyone going to Cedar Point except me. My dentist, who looks about 19, said Cedar Point is so much fun - why don't you want to go? I told him that when he has three kids, a day without them is like a day at Cedar Point.

Leaving Monday so lots of food in the fridge to whip up.

Lunch will be egg drop soup and egg foo young (lots of eggs to use up).

Evening will be mini dogs wrapped in crescent rolls, burgers, homemade fries.

Probably time to get to work.

My wife is still in bed, which is fine, she gets up early in the week for pilates.  Early for her means 7:30.

I watched the Braves game late and slept till around 7.  A lot going on today when you add the baseball to the equation.  Another Braves win and I might start thinking they are better than I expected.  Bullpen game afoot, a new thing really in baseball, two in a row I hear with Morton out.

The WLOCP has me panicked, this is the sort of game the Dawgs have often blown.

The Resident Genius World Headquarters in St. Paul, as well as Izzo the dog, is firmly in the Michigan State camp. My wife was the only person in her graduating class to go to MSU. UM and Notre Dame were, far and away, the most popular choices.

Speaking of Ann Arbor, yesterday we took a virtual cooking class from Zingerman's Bakehouse. In this class, we made calzones, stromboli, and a stuffed pizza with a meatball-based filling and a hot water crust. It was delicious.

As for the Cocktail Party, Georgia has been spitting this game up as big favorites for as long as I've been following college football. This is the expectaion unless and until demonstrated otherwise.

My SIL invited us to go "picnic", i.e. drink wine in a park over the ocean instead of a house, today. So that's a start. Then my friend from NC said "why don't we all drink together separately Saturday?" so when we get home from the park, we're gonna be drinking on Zoom. After that, I will light a fire and start cooking. Should be 100% safe. Good thing I'm a professional.

Dinner is going to be simple though... Wife is picking up prepared kabobs from the market, and I'll grill those, and she'll make a salad for the side. Tomorrow we're going to do steak and potatoes.

Last night was a very good cacio e pepe though.

No travels this weekend. Heating up some frozen breakfast pizza before hitting the bars down the street to catch the early Michigan-Michigan State kickoff with a coworker who is a big Wolverines fan. The October contest for the Paul Bunyan trophy has become my favorite Big Ten rivalry these past few years. Two rosters that have nothing nice to say about each other really ups the entertainment value. Can't wait!

I'm watching UM-MSU and glad to see the shiny yella britches.  Then I thought that in my viewing lifetime, how each program is different now.  Recent uncertainty aside, MSU matters a lot more now than they did in 1988 or so.  Michigan matters less.  Not in terms of this week or this season necessarily, but in terms of national program relevance.
MSU doesn't matter more than UM, but the gap has definitely decreased in the past 35 years.
.
Around the country, if you consider the low-end from back then - like a K-State....they matter immensely more than they did back then AND they matter very little today.  That's how dead a program it was.....they've come a LONG way and still don't matter.  Kansas is below them now, but not much else.
.
Wisconsin is trickier.  They didn't matter at all in the late 80s.  A lot has happened since then, but even in just the B1G totem pole, where are they today?  Behind OSU, UM, PSU?  MSU?  Maybe 3rd, maybe 6th, I don't know.  In what esteem a program is held is obviously an individual opinion, but there can be a consensus.
.
Idk, just something that popped in my head.

Florida matters more now.  Miami matters less.  ND matters....maybe less?  The same?  Perhaps similarly as long as they have NBC.
I think Georgia is probably about the same.  Oregon matters a lot more.  Colorado a lot less.  BYU has fallen off a cliff compared to where they were in the 80s.
OU mattered a lot back then, in the last seasons of Switzer, but may be even higher today.  That's impressive!
If I did this 5 years ago, Clemson would have had fallen in esteem, but you can't say that anymore.
I think Washington was middling back then and matters less today.  UCLA mattered more back then, Alabama far less.  Syracuse mattered more back then, LSU less.

Joel Klatt calling Michigan-Michigan State. I’ve seen negativity towards his announcing but I find him one of the more insightful analysts out there. I know he can come across arrogant like Merril Hoge, but on the Spartans latest scoring drive, Klatt gave great insight on the difficult time the Wolverines’ defense was having adjusting to the Spartans offense, tracing it to their inability to substitute defenders b/c the Spartans, by not initiating offensive subs, weren’t giving time for the defense to sub. That’s useful, educational analysis for an average audience.

Entertaining game so far - Michigan up 20-14.

Come on, if someone told you that most of the way through the third-quarter Coram and Haskins would only have 75 yards rushing between them ,   You would never dream that Michigan has put 30 points on the board

Dax Hill burnt to a crisp on a go route on 4th down. Someone tell me again why he was hyped by Michigan media as a potential 1st rd pick? He’s nowhere close to that.

He can get burned deep in man coverage all the time. Just have to throw at him.

Whoever was praising in last week’s game thread Kenny Pickett having an “NFL Arm” I completely agree. Every time I flip over to Pitt-Miami, Pickett is firing rockets with bullseye accuracy. Pocket presence and delivery is like watching the good version of Jay Cutler all over again. Before he married the blond who turned out to be less girl and more hollow reality show brand.

Michigan dominated that game for the majority and was up 30-14 only to score 3 points the rest of the way and give up up 23 to MSU.

23-3 run to end the game is the story of the game.

Harbaugh HAS to be fired. Period.

Michigan State is not a real top 10 team and neither is Michigan.

Both of these teams are top 25 and would get steam rolled by Ohio State or Georgia -or Bama.
I mean, the #4 team in the playoff generally gets rolled.  I think you can both be a top 10 team, and likely get rolled by those 3.

Harbaugh has to be fired. Period. There is literally zero reason to keep him.

Michigan dominated that game for the majority and was up 30-14 only to score 3 points the rest of the way and give up up 23 to MSU.

23-3 run to end the game is the story of the game.

Harbaugh HAS to be fired. Period.

I'm thinking both schools have new coaches next year, and not because Mel is at LSU or USC.  I think he's in the NFL
There is no way Penn State is beating MSU and OSU will very likely beat MSU but I think MSU has a real shot in that one bc MSU is just a scrappy team that doesn’t quit.

Mel Tucker will have his team 11-1 at worst and have his pick of the litter for NFL and NCAA jobs.

Harbaugh is FINISHED. Stick a fork in him. There is ZERO reason to keep him around anymore.

JJ McCarthy also scored one of their if not their only red-zone TD this game by throwing a heckuva ball to Anthony if memory serves me correct. And Michigan's red-zone offense SUCKS in case you haven't noticed. A lot of that is due to Cade being a very limited QB.

The fumbles mean nothing. The first fumble was kicked out of bounds and Michigan retained possession. The second was on Corum. Stop trying to play this bullshit.

Michigan has a much better shot of winning that game if McCarthy was the starter.

Yeah - here's an even better idea- START THE SUPERIOR PLAYER EARLY IN THE F#CKING SEASON so he gets experience and is more ready to handle the tough tests vs the best teams later in the season.

In the case of Michigan alone- Harbaugh's retard ass had ample time to start JJ McCarthy vs tomato cans like Western, Rutgers, Washington, and Northern Illinois and groom him for the starting job.

Harbaugh is a literal retard who has no clue how to play football in the modern game- he still thinks it's 1993 and his butthole puckers up and his brain farts every single time he's in a crucial moment in a tough game.

Not really news that the Gophers put a beatdown on NW.....since that is a common theme this year.  But.......for the second week in a row......their fourth and fifth running backs to begin the season (not even including Cam Wiley since he entered the transfer portal a couple weeks back)......have each rushed for 100 yards.

First in the West.  And it looks like the Gophers may have a better running back room than they did nearly 20 years ago....with Barber and Maroney.

Listen you, I'm not talking about your team and the kid you'll be tired off and calling to be benched by the end of next year. Or the coach you'll call to be fired and then call for his replacement's firing in life 2.5 years.

I'm just focusing on the Florida thing. And we can all imagine that if he had a few hundred more passes under his belt, he woulda been magically better. But for a moment, the magic freshman wasn't magic in a big game despite the fact I was told he had all that magic. Shit, Jones is both a much better recruit and experienced.

The announcers in this Ole Miss-Auburn game are spending a disproportionately high amount of commentary discussing injuries depleting Ole Miss's depth at WR and whether or not more than a few of Ole Miss's defensive "injuries" are faked in order to disrupt the rhythm of Auburn's offense.

Somehow, Auburn runs very few drives, relatively, but is at a higher pace than I'd expect, despite the fact they have one of the most pro-style staffs in the country.

He had 17 carries a game, with 13 TDs in seven games. That's more than any MSU back since 2014 and, I dunno, for some reason, any Michigan RB since 2013.

He looked much better. The potential is starting to show. Pass protection was solid - no sacks.

The rolled him out and used play-action. All smart moves. No turnovers is also good, especially playing against a team that lives on them.

There were a couple of bad decisions, but that can be cleaned up.

Penn State has OSU offensive line confused.  They are leaving a defensive, interior lineman unblocked on numerous plays.
https://buckeyescoop.com/fulton-analysis-miscues-and-missed-assignments/?amp=1

for those of you who like the Xs and Os- here is some excellent film breakdown.

As it was happening live it was obvious that Penn State was doing something to thoroughly confuse Ohio states offensive lineman. So many plays were a defensive lineman  went totally unblocked.

this really shows you the chess match that goes on every week, especially when the opponent, in this case Penn State, is running defense that they have not shown on film one single time all year.  Seems like that’s the case just about every week for the buckeyes.

Also shows you some of the countermoves they employed to overcome it.
