Title: I'll Take My Badger Served Boiled (SOC 10/23/21)
Post by: MaximumSam on October 23, 2021, 06:30:12 AM
It's feeling frosty out there! I used the fireplace last night for the first time all year while watching Dune. I'm not sure about the movie, but the fire was great. I have to run around all day - drop my wife's car off at the shop, drive down to Circleville to meet my parents and pick up my heathen kids, take them to some sort of spooky thing at their school. Luckily the Buckeyes don't play until the evening slot.

It's 50°F here this AM. which is about a record low since last winter I suspect.  We have a concert tonight but fortunately there aren't many games worth watching today.  The weather should be near perfect.  We'll go to the local farmer's market that comes to the park each Saturday and probably buy nothing.  There is a nice Italian spot the wife likes called Grana we may do for lunch, they have an excellent outdoor terrace on the roof.

It's nice to be home, actually, traveling is fine and interesting but I prefer being home in the main.  I woke up at 5 AM and suddenly all sorts of "issues" popped into my head so I got up and made coffee and checked on those issues, none of them serious, and most were not really issues it turns out, things like whether my property tax was really paid or not (it was) and whether I paid some CC bill or not and what happened to those Discover gift cards I ordered?  I did get a letter from the IRS saying they received my response at least and they need more time, which is OK I guess.

I loathe E Trade.

Not sure - with all the running probably something easy. Chicken quesadillas always a good choice and pretty sure I have everything I need around here.

Lots of frost on the pumpkins here in MSP. First hard freeze of the season in the city was last night.

While we all acknowledge that there is no better trophy in all of college football than Floyd of Rosedale, we will be contesting the River Flats Cup for the 4th time today. It's the greatest trophy in bucket sports. In the event any of you are around the Twin Cities around 9:00, y'all should come down to East River Flats Park and toss some buckets.

This is the Gophers first 230PM local time start of the season.

As for the Gophers, Maryland is a team that the Gophers have had problems with for the duration of PJ'S tenure. I think we win, but have a lot of troubles with.

In Florida this weekend visiting my dad.  We are headed to the beach this morning so my wife can tan and my dad and I can find a bar nearby to watch the early games.

Don't plan on leaving the house today, except to walk the dog, and already did that. Watching gameday at UCLA and they're whining that there's actually water in the air, falling from the sky, in SoCal. It's mist, fellas, you won't melt.

Tonight is burgers. Current planned side dish is deep fried onion strings. But my wife may pivot on that as they're a pain in the ass. Could end up with corn on the cob and/or tater tots.

Lovin' the title of this thread.

I'm working overtime today, but got someone to cover for me at 3:00 so I can bounce out and catch Purdue vs Wisconsin.

It was perfect weather in my part of Florida last night.  Broke out the fire pit for the first time and took a swim in the pool.  Threw some steaks on the grill with baked potato and corn on the cob.

Leftover chicken and bacon quesadilla for breakfast this morning.  Got some chicken quarters marinated in a Brazilian steakhouse type mixture going on the grill tonight.

The cursed streak ends today!  Boiler Up.

and it's a BIG grill too...

got my cup of black coffee going

I also love the thread title.  I've always rooted for the Badgers, because of the Alverez husker connection, but hoping the Boilers come to Lincoln next weekend ranked.

Playing golf this afternoon, beautiful fall weather.  57 degrees and sunny.

not sure if I'll hit a bar for food and football after the round or have a couple brats with homemade kraut in my kitchen.

I am generally not excited for this Purdue game. By that I mean kinda terrified.

That defense is good, meaning scoring is gonna be a mess. Gives me some feels like the 2018 game, but without a legendary back to bail UW out.

Not gonna lie. I can't do that anymore. Well, I maybe could if I improved my sleep hygiene.

I literally ran today because I woke up at 7 off 6 hours sleep and was like "well, the sun is low enough I could run in the shade most of the way, so let's push it."

I described running like this to someone.

First you start and it feels awful
Then you get better, it still feels awful but you're somehow addicted and do it too much
Then you get hurt

Now, beer and coffee taste, in an objective sense, awful. But we learn to be addicted to them. Frankly, they're much better habits than running.

This is 7 starts now and maybe 9-10 games- I just don't see any improvement from him. He is what he is. And it's just not enough to take Michigan to the next level. He just is what he is. He's not going to throw a bunch of picks and lose you games- but he's not going to make any plays put up points in droves or put you on his back and win you games either.

JJ has so much more ability and potential. Time to cultivate it and see where he can take you.

I'm never going to be a "runner", but I think the shin thing is just going to take some conditioning.

PI should be a spot foul in college like it is in the NFL.

I think this kind of dynamic is interesting.

Like, I get that coaches want guys who better know what they're doing. And I'm also growing more dubious of the idea that you take a good talent, load him up with reps and it just happens. I feel like a lot of teams have done this of late. In some cases it's awesome, but a lot of the time, a kid takes lumps and he ends up just like a Cade. Decent, functions well in a winning program. Isn't going to special you to many wins. (Or worse because the kid is getting knocked around, confused and crushed on social media)

The flip side is that if a talented kid doesn't get work, sometimes he's just out. Cade has two more years after this, so if JJ is gonna be good, Cade is gonna have to get benched at some point. Might as well gas up the fans as part of it.

I remember Tressel replacing Todd Boeckman (who led the team to a national championship appearance the year before) with Terrelle Pryor. He said he remembered what Woody Hayes said, "if you have a big gun, use it."

Then he used him for 15 throws. 11 carries, though.

They clearly believe in JJ- because they burned his redshirt and they keep giving him snaps in every single game. In the very few snaps he's had he's shown real flashes. The deep ball for a TD he threw vs Western and the deep ball he threw for a TD vs Wisconsin were by far the best deep balls a Michigan QB has thrown all-season long. And they were against the 1st team defenses of Western/Wisconsin.

At some point they need to give JJ a shot. I don't think Cade is a bad player. He's just not very good. He's a serviceable game-manager and he'd be a hell of a back-up QB for a program that wants to be elite. If you have a guy like Cade as your back-up- you're good.

At some point- they will HAVE to give JJ McCarthy a shot. Why not now? And if JJ wasn't ready to play- then why the HELL did you burn his redshirt and give him snaps in every single game this year?

One of those throws was maybe the best toss I've ever seen. Like, I'm a scheme and talent dork and that thing was unreal.

EDIT: I forgot the RS part. There are many things we know, but there is zero way that kid is getting to a fifth year in Ann Arbor. If he's a fifth year, it means he disappointed and transferred. Even if he settled into being a Cade-type player, he'd leave earlier just with that arm.

I haven’t watched any of Michigan today but just watching the scoreboard as they pull away.

I know I told you this before but they have a pretty good recipe right now. Excellent defense really strong special teams, A strong running game,  and run the ball in a quarterback that doesn’t lose games. Where am I seen that form to win a championship before?  Hint: Krenzel.

i’m not predicting that they will but as a Michigan fan you should be pretty darn happy that you have a team that doesn’t beat itself and wears other teams down.

Yeah, not buying any of this. Sorry. That's a big stretch and that was 20 years ago. And the has changed completely. It's more QB-centric than it's ever been. The college game has moved away from "run the ball play defense" and pivoted more towards the NFL game where it's ALL about the QB.

Need QB that can make plays and put up points in todays game if you want to win anything in todays game.

I didn't watch entire PSU-ILL game but I did not see Clifford run once the entire time I was watching.  Makes you wonder how many times PSU could have scored if they had a QB that could run today.

Gophers need to figure out how to squash the home run play. All of Maryland's points are off 50+ yards.

I saw that at the start of 3OT,  each team had a choice to go on defense first or 2nd.  Each time when given the choice,  the team chose to go on defense first.  I thought this was interesting because I would have thought you would want to let your team rest for another play and make the other team's play defense first, giving them less rest.

Since by the 3OT, teams just go for alternating 2 pt conversions,  there is no mystery involved.  Either you score 2 pts or no pts.  You don't have to wait to see what the other team does first.  Might as well let your defense rest.

Uhhh, the TD isn't just assumed, lol.  You have to score it first.
Maybe don't go into coaching?
Do you just not know the new rules? Or did you misread his comment?

starting with the third overtime the touchdown is assumed it’s just two point conversions.

Offense in the Brohm era is just deeply unexplainable.

Like it's great tactically. And there are like 1-2 really nice offensive players a year. But per SP+, they've been better than 45th once in five years

Our OL doesn't suck because of an emotional letdown.

It really is unexplainable.  Brohm cribs NFL plays and studies the system.  At WKU he had one of the most explosive offenses in the entire country.

Obviously the defensive competition is much better in the B1G.

It really comes down to QB play the last 2 years.  Brohm hasn't found one.  He got some excellent talent in the pipeline though.

so I just saw the replay of the play that won the game for Oklahoma. Why wasn't the play blown dead for forward progress #1, and #2 I didn't even know that was legal to just hand the ball forward to someone in front of you???

Caleb Williams with a heads-up play- but I think it should've been blown dead- and also- Oklahoma does not look like the #3 team in America. Not with that freaking defense.

Whew the Ballad of the Brakes is finally done. My wife made an appointment at the Tuffy by Aldi at 8 am. Which is fine for me but very early for her because she gets home from work around 4 am. So I wake her up at 7:45 and she takes off like a bat out of hell. I tried to follow her, but she was way too far ahead. So I just went to Aldis. And looked around, and didn't see a Tuffy. I pulled it up on google and there is no Tuffy by Aldi.

I call, but no answer. I text her that I have no idea where she is. I see there is a Tuffy by her job, so I figured that was the one. I drive over there - no dice. So...I went to the gym, since I was going to do that anyway. She eventually calls me and says she forgot her phone at home, and her appointment was for a Tuffy somewhere totally different, and she didn't know where that was, so she was going to be. No problem, I'm at the gym. Then she calls 5 minutes later and says she made an appointment at Mr. Tire (which is by the Aldi). So I go to meet her there, and they said they'd be done by 5.

Which would have been fine, except they didn't get done by 5. Or 6. And she has to leave for work at 6:20, and they are closed tomorrow. We waited in their parking lot, and I think they were trying to hurry up for us but forgot which car was ours, because they ran out to tell us the Honda was ready (we have a Chrysler). Eventually we white knuckled it home so she could change, then ran back so she could get her car just in time for her to take off to work.

Solid game in Ames. Late lead changes between Iowa State and Oklahoma State. Ok State’s downfield passing was enough to keep things going despite a relentless front 7 attack from Iowa State. Down late 21-17 Iowa State executed an 85 yard drive to go up 24-21 with about 5 minutes left. Oklahoma State had chances with 2 drives to take the lead again but were stuffed on a 4th down stand just outside of FG range. Cyclone fans rushed the field. Matt Campbell has a very consistent, stable program going.

There is a lot of parity this season in college football; the most exceptional team seems to be Georgia.

I suspect, in time, the name, image and likeness deals will eliminate parity, and make it more difficult for schools like Iowa, Nebraska, Okie State, K-State, and Kansas that have smaller markets, without a sportswear company, or  nearby sporting goods company, to compete.

Buckeyes with a strong drive to open the game - no big plays, all taking what the Hoosiers gave them. 7-0 Buckeyes.

Coming into the season I thought the WR and OL combo was the best I've ever seen at OSU. The questions were at QB and RB. If Stroud and Henderson continue to play well, I think this might be the best offense OSU has ever had.

The Gophers second half was dominated by long, clock killing drives. Considering how much trouble the Gophers have had with Maryland, beating the starch out of them in the second half was very fulfilling.

Also, the weather was spectacular. 50, brilliant sunshine, and no wind. It was a good day.

For overtime,  I actually like the rotating 2pt conversions starting with the 3OT,   but there are some things they can do to speed it up and change the perception of how long the OT is.

First, one thing that slowed things way down in the ILL-PSU game was switching sides after each OT. The teams had to move 94 yards from 3yd line to the other 3yd line. So no switching sides. 2nd you should have a 40 second clock to get the other offense and other defense on the field. That will keep the flow going.

Next, once the 3rd OT starts, that's it. Everything after that is considered the 3rd OT, no matter how many times you alternate attempts. Each team only gets 1 timeout and no more. And who plays offense first and who plays defense first for each series of attempts is determined at the beginning of the 3rd OT, so that won't slow things down.

I was amazed about the switching ends.
The one team should choose offense or defense, but the other should choose what end of the field.

Ryan Day is the best offensive mind in the college game at the moment. Schemes change all the time and new top minds emerge- it was Mike Leach then RichRod or Urbz for a minute then Chip then Lincoln Riley. Right now, that top dawg is Ryan Day. And he might have the best passing game of any of 'em.

If they played their asses off, how are they going to put their asses into it when the staff demands that of them in drills?

(I thought coming out of the ND game that the numbers had UW in better position than it looked. Translating that position was going to be tough, but they looked to be modest favorites much of the rest of the way. Don't want to jinx it, but some very fertile ground for a rally there)

Should UC drop in the polls?  The question would be, for me, who should replace them, I'm not impressed with OU.

I'd put Bama there is we were doing a power ranking, but they are showing issues on defense.  Michigan?  Ohio State?  The latter looks impressive on offense now.

I watched a bit of the Clemson game, they are really floundering, basic errors on offfense, not a good team.

On Indiana, it's been my experience that a nonhelmet team will have some success in a year and then not at all the next despite expectations.  Maybe they happen to win 5 close games against mediocre opponents one year and lost 4 of 5 the next, or something, and they upset someone one year and get blown out the next.

I thought Mizzou for example would be half decent this year, they are not.  (They play Vandy this week for a dubious prize.)

Colorado will go 9-3 one year, perhaps, and the 3-9 the next.  I know some of that can be injuries, these teams tend to lack depth.

Kentucky might be an exception, they have had pretty decent teams for a few years now, I'd try and hire their coach were I LSU et al.

I would jump Alabama, OSU, and Michigan into the 2, 3, 4 spots.  The fact is that Alabama will still need to go through Georgia to make the playoff.  Similar situation for OSU and Michigan.  One of those teams has at least one loss coming prior to the BTCG which will drop them.  So it's really inconsequential as far as the playoffs go to move them at this point.

IMO.....these scenarios still dictate that Cincinnati and Oklahoma control their own destinies if they win out.  And in the unlikely case that Alabama beats Georgia in the SECCG....the pollsters won't have to make a post championship week shuffle pushing Alabama in and Cincy out....most likely leading to an uproar.  Again.....similar for OSU.  Difference is that I think they win out.  Make the move to push them above Cincy and Oklahoma right now when the opportunity exists.  OSU is slaughtering teams and both Cincy and Oklahoma had poor showings.  Oklahoma specifically looking like an overrated team despite an undefeated record.

I agree, the polls at this point don't matter, it's just to chat about.  I think if we paired UC with several of the top ten teams behind them on a neutral field most would expect UC to lose.

I think Bama would demolish them, and OSU would boat race them.

wouldn't count the chickens before they hatch yet in regards to M/OSU.

Michigan will have to get through a tough road game next week vs a tough team in Michigan State before I'm ready to even remotely think about them having a sliver of a hope in the East. And quite frankly- with the way McNamara routinely misses passes that travel further in the air than 15 yards- not loving Michigan's chances here in East Lansing. Sell out to shut down the run and force McNamara to beat you- and he can't.

And while I fully expect Ohio State to blow the doors off Penn State- the game is in Happy Valley at night. Which I would argue is maybe the toughest night venue in all of college football. It's going to be a really tough environment for a young QB making really his first true road test. Does anybody really think @Rutgers or @Indiana are tough road tests? And not to mention- Penn State is reeling off a couple of really bad close losses back to back. They are a wounded, desperate team and Franklin might be playing to save his job.

how'd you guys get such an easy schedule? you avoided Wisconsin and Iowa and you got everyone at home except for Michigan- which let's face it- is like an auto just roll out of bed and show up and it's a W for Ohio State.

oh shit...I was thinking it was in Happy Valley for some reason.

Basically disregard almost everything I said.

Yeah, Ohio State going to murder them.
Lol

I think your overall point is still quite valid. First of all I expect a knock down drag out affair between Ohio State and Penn State. I expect the same with Michigan and Michigan State as well as Ohio State, Michigan State and finally “the game”.

Weather, injuries, all kinds of things come into play and if we’ve not learned anything is that in conference games tend to be great equalizer’s.

very true. In-conference games are always closer- even Bama has tough games in conference (see Florida) that normally they would spank. they all just know each other a lot better in-conference.

except for Ohio State-Michigan game. let's be honest here- in the last 10 years Michigan has won once (2011) and that one has not been close in any of the other games with the exception of 2012 and 2016. And unless Michigan can magically find a passing game- don't think it will be close either in 2021.

well, if they are simply to chat about (which I agree), why not spice things up by jumping a 0ne loss Ohio St. team over Cincy?

stir the pot a little
I don't know how seriously the writers take polls, I THINK most of them just write down the "usual suspects" which is why the polls are predictable.

The coaches assign some grad assistant and MIGHT look it over and MIGHT adjust it a bit, I doubt that happens often.  A GA isn't going to shake things up, and it's not even clear whether it's some power poll or just line them up by number of losses and finagle a bit based on optics, I think it's mostly the latter.

I don't think UC would be favored against any other Top Ten team, and in some cases it would be a double digit margin.  Wake Forest is undefeated and ranked outside the Top Ten, in part because of helmet, and in part because they have mediocre wins.

This "poll" has UC at 9.  Pitt made a nice move up.  I don't have any special attachment to this "poll" either.

7-0. Smoke and mirror feel because this is an offense with literally no passing game at all.

Michigan will lose next week vs Michigan State. Why? Because JJ McCarthy isn't the starting QB.
Saw this on an M Board

First, I am just pointing out a statistical fact, so don't bother trying to cancel the messenger.
With another very consistent throwing game by JJ (hit on 66% of attempts), his QBR is now 91.9
Yes, he did not get the 20 snaps that would qualify him for ESPN's QB ranking board, but if you look at the current leaders ....  JJ has a better QBR than the nation's top rated passer OSU Freshman CJ Stroud (91.7) who is head and shoulders above any other passer at the moment.
Course, JJ also averages 5.5 yards per carry versus Stroud's pedestrian 0.2 yards per rush.

And this is what burns my ass- they insert JJ into the games all-game long- even when game is still in question vs the other teams 1's - and give him a play here or there- and virtually EVERY GOD DAMN TIME they put him in the game he shows real flashes and does something positive or even amazing- and then they f##ng pull him and don't give him any more reps or even try to work him into a rhythm. It makes me want to pull my f##ng hair out.

Like it actually is MORE impressive to me what he's doing- bc playing QB takes REPS, RHYTHM, AND TIMING. They just roll him off the sideline say hey kid go do something good in one or two plays then we'll put ya back on the bench. It makes no god damn sense. LET HIM F##NG ACTUALLY PLAY.

anybody with a set of eyeballs can see my point. it's not hard. JJ just flashes elite talents/skills for a QB. he's clearly a much more talented player than Cade McNamara.

So UM-MSU is a big game coming up.
Is there a less-likely play than the bungled punt-turned game-losing TD from a few years back?  It literally defies belief.

don't get me started on that....my god that was a terrible day.

looks like it might rain. I think that helps Michigan. Our passing game stinks- theirs is actually quite good when they hit the big plays. Rain might neutralize that.

And for the record- I don't want to make it out like I think JJ is the savior of Michigan football. I don't. I just think how the coaches are handling the kid is god awful. If you're going to burn his shirt and play him every single game- at least give him a few series or a QTR to really play and get into the zone.

And the other previous "savior" Michigan QB's like TaterTot, Denard, Devin Gardner, or Shane Morris never flashed quite like JJ did. TaterTot didn't have the elite arm talent like JJ is showing. Denard was a glorified RB who really could not throw the football. Devin Gardner was actually pretty talented but inaccurate- and he also lost a year and a half of QB development by switching to WR. For what it's worth- think you could make a great case DG's college coaches wrecked what potential he had. And then Shane Morris just sucked at football- every time he got playing time or snaps he was just bad- he was the original Graham Mertz.

JJ is getting snaps and really flashing. He is showing you everything you want to see in a QB. He's got a big arm but more importantly he's accurate. He throws the deep ball with great touch and timing. He's not Michael Vick- but he really can run a little bit and pick up yards with his feet. His release is effortless and super quick- and he can evade the rush and escape the pocket and throw on the run accurately across his body- maybe the hardest thing there is for a QB to do. Every time he is getting in the game he is showing some seriously high level traits. Like I have not been this excited for a Michigan QB in a long long long long long time. He needs more playing time, period.

Regardless, I don't think there's anyway that JJ isn't starting next year. He's just going to have too much experience enrolling early and going through spring ball, then going through fall camp, then taking snaps in every game as a true frosh, then going through another spring ball and fall camp.

Only argument I can possibly see for him not starting this year is- true frosh/rookie- but he'll have plenty of development via 2 spring balls and 2 fall camps and an entire season of playing time. There's just no way they don't hand the reins over to him in 2022.

O'Korn fell apart before he ever got to Michigan. O'Korn had a heck of a true freshman season at Houston and then his sophomore year he completely disintegrated, melted down and fell apart at the seams and got benched for a guy that is playing WR in the NFL right now.
