Title: Corn Wars: Attack Of The Cyclones (SOC 9/11/21)
Post by: MaximumSam on September 11, 2021, 06:34:37 AM
A brisk morning in Columbus should lead to a banger of a day for some football. Dropped into the 50's last night - I was rolled up in my blanket sleeping like a log. Not sure what we are eating today - the wife is working this weekend, so it's just me against the kids. What will that mean? I'll check out Krogers here in a bit, see what they have. Maybe pizza? I still have leftover pork and brisket I need to use up before it becomes dog food.

Anyway, the football slate isn't great, but the B1G is supreme today. Big Nude Saturday with OSU and Oregon, Gameday at Iowa-ISU, and the ABC night cap is Michigan-Washington. Here's to everyone.

11 am, ACCN, Illinois at Virginia
Noon, FOX, Oregon at OSU
Noon, BTN, Youngstown State at Michigan State
Noon, ESPNU, Miami (OH) at Minnesota
Noon, BTN, Indiana State at Northwestern
2 pm, ACCN, Rutgers at Syracuse
3 pm, CBSN, Purdue at UConn
3:30, FS1, Ball State at Penn State
3:30, BTN, Buffalo at Nebraska
4:30, ABC, Iowa at ISU
7 pm, FS1, Eastern Michigan at Wisconsin
7:30, BTN, Idaho at Indiana
7:30, BTN, Howard at Maryland
8 pm, ABC, Washington at Michigan

As good as last week's slate was, the games largely disappointed.  Perhaps today's understated slate will deliver more intriguing games.

I'm thinking last week around 530 or 6, there weren't any close games to watch.  The best thing available was Oregon - Fresno, which was on the Pac 12 Network.

I can't imagine Iowa-Iowa State being anything but a nail biter.  I also think UW-Mich will be a great game tonight.  We have some possibility that the noon slot could get a little boring, but I think the Ducks will create enough fireworks that we probably won't be able to turn off that game.  Plus if that does get out of hand, Rutgers kicks off at 2.

I think I might have ACC Network, which is important with 2 games on there today and with this alliance starting up.

Went out with friends last night and then decided to try to sneak in a short lift. Which led to me tooling around on my laptop after 130. So now I’m tired as all hell.

Considering if I can sneak in a run before games start. Can I drive out of town for a bit to help some friends with some thing today, too.

I'm a bit worried for the Buckeyes. I thought things were way too easy on offense, and Oregon isn't going to give up big plays like that. Stroud will have to play a lot better today. Luckily no rain in the forecast. On the other side, still unsure who they will roll out there in the back seven. Not sure they know either.

The answer to all that is no, you only have time to sneak out and get a case of beer. No helping friends on a Saturday, unless she's super hot and needs her bed looked at.

It was a good concert week for me, GNR on Wednesday night,  Slash is still world class and saw St. Vincent last night and she's just superb.  Hope we get some good performances on the gridiron.

Dammit!!!

gonna be a hot & steamy one in Lincoln

too hot for an old man to stand in a tailgate lot and then sit in the stadium

Lots of sunshine. Record high temperatures expected. High 97F. Winds SSW at 10 to 20 mph.

Golf early this morning to be ready for the Husker game.

Interested in the Corn War, will be watching.  My guess is that the Cyclone signal caller is better and has a slight edge playing at home

How will the young Buckeye QB perform vs decent competition?

Does Bert have something, or it is just way too damn easy to outcoach Frost?

I need to eat some chicken breast that has been marinating long enough in the fridge, but that's not football food.

I should say, the helping is with house/pet sitting. I also slightly messed up the timing of when it was supposed to start.

On a complete other note, A friend of mine who is a rabid buckeyes fan received his first order for a bed inspection at halftime of the 2006 Michigan game.

Will Kevin Costner do the coin flip?

Anyway, here's my plan:
Start with Oregon-OSU, but turn over to Pitt-Tenn on commercials (I love watching UT lose).
An hour in, watching Florida @ USF, flipping to Ore-OSU on commercials.
I'll flip over to the corn-hole game as Florida winds down, then probably Texas @ Arky after that.
Finishing with UW-UM unless its boring, then I'll change it to the holy war (Utah @ BYU) because they genuinely play hard against each other.

A half mile in, yesterday’s beer and double fried chicken sandwich started rumbling. That’s definitely the only reason it was slow and unpleasant.

Up for a day of sitting inside in the AC since it's supposed to be a high of 92. Although after the Purdue game I might turn on the misters and go outside for cocktail hour.

Tonight is going to be Michael Symon's grilled skirt steak with sticky BBQ onions (https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/michael-symon/grilled-skirt-steak-with-sticky-barbecue-onions-8809346), and his cheesy hash brown potatoes (https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/michael-symon/cheesy-hash-brown-potatoes-8809361).

Tomorrow my brother and his son are coming over, so I'm smoking 30# of pork shoulder. His wife is coming too, of course, but when it comes to food consumption she's a much smaller factor. She drinks her weight in wine though lol...

Main watching is going to be OSU vs OU, and then of course Purdue @ UConn.

Went to to see Hirie, Dirty Heads, and Sublime last night.  Good show.  Feeling it a bit today.  First weekend without overtime in a few weeks, so will probably enjoy the "long" weekend in lazy fashion and consume football and banish the kids outside to the pool.

Got some chicken breasts sitting in a Brazilian steakhouse type marinade.  Will throw those on the grill tonight.  Haven't decided on a side yet.

Landed in Des Moines yesterday and hitched a ride up to Ames. Met up with distant family from Sioux City area who sends all their kids to Iowa or Iowa State. We spent earlier morning mingling around the Gameday festivities before setting up a tailgate near stadium. It is hot hot hot today, about 95F. About three more hours until heading into stadium. Four tickets loaded in phone to go along with 5 more uncle has for our group of nine. Can’t wait.

Lot of rumbling carrying over from last year about Coombs as DC.Certainly a very good DB coach.Coordinating all the moving parts may not be his forte

Fresno State only allowed Oregon to score 31 last week.
Ohio State gave up 31 to Minnesota last week.
Miami (Ohio) has given up 31 to Minnesota this week.
Ohio State's defense appears no better than Fresno State's, or Miami (Ohio)'s.
I don't think this is a Top 3 team no matter how it ends.

Whatever you have to tell yourself I guess.

He's an odd case.

He had some good looking teams at Toledo that could've done more. He's fielding better teams than ISU usually fields (per SRS, for of the five best in the past 40 years), but it's come with losses every year to Iowa teams that are usually better (or equal). Which, if you're an ISU fan is probably better than being worst but randomly beating Iowa.

ISU fans would likely hope other programs take on BB's outlook. But the world doesn't work that way. No one leaves a coach with some potential alone for long. They usually get plucked too early. Would be interesting how ISU looks in a new Big 12.

Washington has a really good defense. I was impressed with how Michigan ran on them, despite having a pathetic passing attack. Washington was loading the box to stop the run as they rightfully didn't respect Michigan's pathetic passing attack, and they still couldn't stop Michigan from running down their throat.

Blake Corum is the first RB at Michigan that's actually good that has a lot of speed in oh- 20 years or so. Haskins is what he's always been- a solid power runner- and his thunder to Corum's lighting compliments each other extremely well.

The offensive play-calling was predictable and a joke. Harbaugh STILL cannot develop a modern passing game or elite level QB. It's freaking infuriating. Not that I think McNamara sucks or anything- I just think he's basically mediocre. And that's a HUGE improvement over the QB play under Harbaugh minus the first year with Jake Rudock. I'd like to see JJ McCarthy get a shot- but I'm almost worried that Harbaugh will just waste/ruin JJ as well.

He was fast, but Corum definitely looks a good bit faster. And Corum is much more physically built/stout. Corum is short, but his legs and arms are massive and he can run between the tackles and get tough yards. Evans was very slight/slender and went down on contact too easily and wasn't always the best between the tackles. Corum is a much better pure runner.

Evans did have his head up his ass quite a bit, but he was also very underutilized and misused. That kid should've been splitting time at slot WR and RB and used in a WR/RB/KR/PR hybrid role how OSU used Curtis Samuels. That was much more his game than RB imo. He was a phenomenal route runner and natural pass catcher.

Having a head coach, or QBs coach, or offensive coordinator, who was a QB is advantageous. It is why Iowa's offense is off-kilter. It is why I have been surprised Michigan hasn't been developing QBs like Purdue did in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, and beyond.

red flags to me:

Michigan's CB's still suck. Vincent Gray and Germon Green are not B1G caliber CB's. The only time any of Michigan's CB's are any good is when they line Dax Hill up at CB. They should seriously just stop moving Dax Hill around and make him play CB full-time. RJ Motten and Brad Hawkins have both shown enough at safety to make Dax Hill move to CB permanent.

Michigan's passing game still sucks. Not sure how you fix this. The play-calling is ass, loss of Ronnie Bell is huge, and McNamara is a game manager- not sure he's the type of QB that can take a passing offense to the next level.

True. I suppose at big schools, hope springs eternal with coaching changes, plus the listed talent is still there.

Out of curiosity, if those teams were not ranked, you'd sub in Oklahoma State and Ole Miss. So I think in the end, there just aren't 25 teams we think should be top-25.

Is Toledo any good?
Any good? Probably. Good enough to push a team that's supposed to be as good as ND might be, probably not.

I mean, unless they puke on the field, they're winning their other two non-conference games. They're usually pretty decent in the MAC, so 8-4/9-3 is likely, maybe 10-1 if everything comes together.

Texas got boat raced by Arkansas, and USC got spanked by Stanford.

They aren't even close to sniffing the Top 50.
You glean a lot from a sample size of 1.

Everyone has to do a shot.

Several general thoughts from my weekend in Iowa.

There is zero sense of Covid. Once out of Des Moines’ small airport nobody is wearing a mask, stores don’t have caution signs up, and there’s no capacity limitations at what would be the very crowded college bars. For better or worse, it’s refreshing after a year and a half of California beating me over the head with precaution measures.

You know you’re back in the Upper Midwest when you start seeing Menard’s, Scheels, Pizza Ranch, and Grain Belt beer.

Speaking of beer, I never understood why Busch Light existed with seemingly nobody I knew ever drinking it. Well, evidently, what Miller Lite is for Wisconsin and Coors Light is for Colorado, Busch Light is likewise to Iowa. So many 24 packs being carried to the tailgates. Busch on tap at every bar. Busch cans scattered across the lawns of every frat house and student housing complex.

We were in Highlands, NC last week and they had a mask mandate for SIDEWALKS!!!  Probably 80% compliance.  Then the stores were variable between required, requested, and not required at all.  Weird.

We then went to Lake Toxaway (nice place) and nobody wore masks except serving staff at the restaurant.  We had a nice room there, 1914 mansion now a hotel, Greystone Inn.  Nice place.

I haven't had a mask on in months here in Iowa.  I don't see many masks at all here worn by anyone.

As for Busch light being the state beer of Iowa, it's down right embarrassing.  but, it's the truth.

There is plenty to be embarrassed about in Iowa, but not football, at least not in 2021.

We have some great beer in Iowa, it's just not popular with most residents.

That's OK, more for me and at better prices.  Supply and demand

Another observation from Iowa State – I forget how much the rest of the Big 12 hates the Texas Longhorns. Of the P5 conferences, the Big 12 is by far the least represented conference whose games I’ve attended in person. And whenever I’m in Big 12 middle country it’s like I have to relearn just how quickly what I’ve seen of the rest of the Big 12 – ISU, Texas Tech, Kansas St, Oklahoma, Missouri (at the time) – resorts to bashing Texas for sport. Lots of “Horns Down” hand signs last Saturday when cameras panned over the crowd. Lots of ISU colored shirts with an upside down Longhorns logo, even though it isn’t until November that ISU will play Texas, who, by the way, embarrassed themselves against Arkansas this past weekend.

Speaking of ruining theyselves, it’s only game 2 of Sarkisian’s tenure at Texas and he’s already blaming the players:

https://twitter.com/BDavisAAS/status/1437449113428180994

In Sark’s defense this was more of a postgame reaction; this week Sark is taking responsibility and actively making a number of sensible adjustments, starting with a QB change. However, Texas is the fifth job Sarkisian has back-stepped into – Washingon, USC, Falcons, Alabama – in which, as a mediocre candidate, he’s making out with more than his employer is in turn receiving.

Pete Carroll’s decade at USC has left college football with a coaching tree of entitled, underachieving blowhards getting the benefit of the doubt for landing jobs, such as Ed Orgeron at LSU and Lane Kiffin at Tennessee and USC, before they're ready and mature.
