Title: OT: Best TV Show Ever?

Just wanted to see what people around here were thinking. Thoughts?

I think you would have to group shows according to their genre to be fair

along those lines

comedy - Coach, Big Bang Theory, Cheers, Seinfeld

drama - Greys Anatomy, all three Chicago fire, med & pd, Hill St Blues.

syfy - Battlestar Galactica, all star treks, Twilight Zone

anyway just off the top of my head

Comedy: Simpsons or Curb Your Enthusiasm

Drama: The Americans

SciFi: Not a big fan.  I guess XFiles?  I liked Fringe for a while, then it didn't have a plan on how to end.

Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul

For sci-fi The Watchmen, also The Expanse is really good for the genre, not sure I'd put it on the list of best ever

I think peak Breaking Bad, especially the final few episodes is about as high quality of anything I've ever watched,  TV, film, theater.

I don't watch much TV anymore, either.  Aside from live sports, and far less of that these days too.

We like to do Family Move Night with the kids once or twice per week, but that's movies, not TV shows.

We didn't watch mad Men live until a few seasons into its run. It was a fantastic binge show. Once we caught up, and watched week-to-week, we started to realize how many episodes were a little too slow, they got lost when you watched four or five in a row.

One other one that I loved, thinking of ones that I've been binged to catch up, and then watched live, was 24

I loved the pacing of Mad Men.  It was deliberately slow, a stark counterpoint to the hurried pace of most modern television.

Now I will say that after about Season 2, the Betty Draper storylines were not great.  But that was a function of writing, not direction or artistic choice.

Agreed. That show was great, and Cranston fantastic in it.

I will say though, having rewatched it- some of it is a little hokey and not sure it'll hold up. Real people don't talk like Jesse Pinkman- yeah bitch, yeah. Bitch wheres my money bitch!

I think Breaking Bad was constrained by being on network TV. If they were on a platform like HBO, Amazon, Netflix- where there isn't censorship required for broadcast TV- you can actually write real curse words and actually explore darkest human behaviors and emotions- would've been an even more amazing show.

I was very fine with it too, overall, but to wait a whole week for a show, some were totally useless for both character development and plot.  I just think some were better served as one 2 hour episode, than two 1 hours

I watched the entire series live, and never felt that way.  I was always disappointed when the episode ended and looked forward to the next one.

I loved 24, but it jumped the shark a bit.

Breaking Bad was amazing, but I think it was limited by being on a traditional cable network like AMC. Would've been maybe the greatest show ever if it had been on HBO and they been allowed to really go all the way.

GoT was easily one of the few greatest tv shows ever- only to be undone by its final season. Haven't been that disappointed since GF Part III. What a let down.

We need a whole different thread for GOT. Like shows that were great and then became completely terrible. GOT was great until the last few episodes, and now it's hard to look back at it fondly. Shows that started great then became terrible? Dexter. Westworld

100%. Those showrunners were just trying to fly through the final season to fulfill their contract with HBO because they had a massive deal with Disney on the hook to take over Star Wars. Then they weaseled out of the Disney deal so they could sign a bigger deal with Netflix which guaranteed them $250 million.

Westworld should have ended after 1 season.  Or prequel it, but inside the park. The moment they progressed out of the park, I couldn't care less.

Not really.

Breaking Bad didn’t become terrible. Neither did The Sopranos. The creators/writers just knew when to end.

GoT was always going to end when it did, they ran out of source material as they caught up to the final books which although have yet to be published- George RR Martin gave the show runners the broad stokes for the final books.

It wasn't canceled though, that's just how they chose to wrap it up.

Not a TV show, but rise of Skywalker is the one movie sequel that wasn't just bad, but was bad in a way that retroactively made the prior movies worse, by diminishing them. For that reason alone, I think it stands above bad sequels, or bad endings to TV shows.

As far as shows go, for being an NBC show, I thought the blacklist started out pretty good, and seemed to have an idea of what it was doing through about three seasons. And it fell off an absolute cliff. Somehow it's still on. You don't tend to see that much anymore, particularly with dramas.  It does not appear to have an end game

Thought of it in the context of shows that chose an appropriate time to end...

Yup.  Granted they were kind of forced out, but arrested development was in the same boat. Then they came back with some very unfunny Netflix seasons

Great f'n show. The original seasons- one of the best comedy shows ever on tv. The Netflix ones- turrrrible.

As far as comedies go, I'd say Seinfeld, Arrested Development, The Office UK & US (with Steve Carrell), It's Always Sunny, Extras, & Curb Your Enthusiasm are all way up there.

Yeah, I can't really think of shows in their entirety as awesome because I'm so sensitive to drop-offs. Seasons 1-2 of Arrested Development is in my top 3-5 peak shows of all time. Season 3 was starting to slide w/the Charlize Theron storyline feeling forced and writing the infighting with Fox into the show was a major turnoff for me. The comeback seasons were cringe.

This is basically my list, minus Office UK (probably great, but I can't handle the awkwardness) and Extras (haven't seen it), adding in The Simpsons.

Back to my last comment, I mostly think of peak seasons:

Arrested Developments, seasons 1-2
Seinfeld, seasons 2-6
The Simpsons, seasons 3-8ish
The Office, seasons 2-6
Sunny, seasons 3-7
Curb, seasons 1-5

Unpopular opinion: Star Wars is for children and nerds and it sucks. Liked them as a kid. Watched them as an adult and watched the new ones probably just because of nostalgia- they suck. All of them.

I agree.  I saw the first three.  Then, years later, I saw the one with Jar Jar Binks (Episode 1?) and hated it.  I have not felt like I needed to watch any more of them.
Even in the original three, the characters are like cardboard cutouts.  The plots may be good or not-so-good, but the characters are not convincing in the least.  Bugs Bunny cartoons have more character development than Star Wars does.

Literally the only interesting character in any of those movies is Darth Vader. And we don't get enough of him in my opinion- and when they did those prequels with Jar Jar Binks to explore DV's backstory- those movies were SO awful and the guy they picked to play Darth Vader as a young man couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.

Last I checked Godfather 3 wasn't making anyone's list.

Terminator 2 must be the worst movie ever made, by that logic.

GF 3 was an abortion when compared to the first two masterpieces- but it's still better than any freaking Star Wars movie- and Pacino & Andy Garcia were freaking fantastic in it.

I think the first movie started out as an amazing visual movie and over the years that esteem leaked into the quality of the movie itself and then the last couple of generations just grew up thinking it was a great movie.
A similar idea would be Jurassic Park - where the CGI mostly still holds up today, amazingly, had that fact bleed into the greatness of the movie itself....but I don't feel like that's happened.  Or maybe it has - it was so amazing at the time, visually, and maybe that's enough for it to still matter and have its story continue into the present.
But I don't think there's the same obsession as with Star Wars.
.
Maybe it's not that, maybe it was just the first Sci-Fi movie that had enough action in it to make it big in the mainstream.

I thought that Star Wars I was a great adventure movie, albeit one with rather unconvincing characters.  No. II was not so good, but No. III was a great story again.  But the cardboard characterizations never got any better.  After Episode 1 with Jar-Jar Binks, and even less convincing characters, there was no reason for me to watch any more of them.

A New Hope is a dreadful movie.  But somehow they managed to take a bad movie, with great special effects, and turn it into a great trilogy

The prequels get a bad rap, but they are actually an amazing story, ruined with a bad script, and an over reliance on CGI that wasn't there yet.

The sequel trilogy wasn't just bad, it was bad in a way that poisoned everything before it.  It actually ruined the story.

New Hope Star Wars is by far the best one.

Yeah can't get on board with New Hope being dreadful. I think it is really good - the ending is pure Roy Rogers, and the effects are the worse of the three, but the very beginning is as iconic as anything in cinema, and the slow burn after that was pretty slick.

Since Star Wars is being talked about I'll throw The Mandalorian out there. Not that's it's amongst the best of all time, but its probably the best in the Star Wars universe.

Its not geared towards young kids.  There's more of a dark feel to it with adult content.  The acting is good.  Pedro Pascal is excellent, as usual (he also kills it in Narcos and Game of Thrones).  They set up an interesting villain, played by Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring from Breaking Bad).

I was having a discussion with a friend of mine today, and was reminded of the TV show Halt And Catch Fire .  It's not the best TV show ever but it was a really good one.  Especially for someone like me that grew up as a computer nerd in the 70s and 80s, and then became a computer engineer in the 90s and 2000s.

Lots of great memories sparked by watching that show.  My older brother (born in 71) had some friends which were really into early gaming and computing.   It was fun to learn where we were heading as a young kid.  I thought the modem was the coolest thing and the ability to talk to other computers.

True story, my Dad was a Secret Sevice agent and this is when computer crimes were exploding in the 80s.  Agents befriended (no different than any other investigative tactics used today) these teens and young adults to really help them get up to speed and on background for all kinds of underworld activity.   One of the cool things I got to learn as I got older.

Anyways, that show is a very good time capsule.

Yup, AMC was attempting to mirror the feel of Mad Men, but in a different era.  And to a certain extent they did.  But they also allowed it to grow into its own thing, and that made it much better than just a copycat.

I was born in '71 as well, and got to watch and learn firsthand as the computer revolution unfolded.  It was a great time to be a kid, and to be a computer nerd.

Yep.  Born in 75. Got a C64 for Christmas about 85 or so. Still have it in the closet. First college class 1994 teacher wrote her email on the chalkboard didn’t even know email existed. Within two years it was hard to imagine life before the internet and this was on a 56k modem.

Hey.  Hey.  Hey.

“Best” is subjective- no right answer.

I liked just about all of the sitcoms named- but my all time favorite is Seinfeld.  Couldn’t stop smiling or laughing- followed by Everybody Loves  Raymond.  Friends just never did it for me- too much drama trying to blend in with comedy.

I can understand that because it was essentially Jerry's role in the show. He more or less played himself, is not a great actor, and his character wasn't overly interesting.

What made the show great was Larry David. He created four anti-heros with few to no redeeming qualities, but they somehow came off as likeable. It took them a little while to find their legs, had 3-4 seasons of perfection, then waned toward the end as Kramer became a caricature and George's part became increasingly overacted. Elaine was the only character I felt was basically perfect throughout the show's run.

This is also not in the conversation for Best TV Show Ever because it's only midway through its second season...

But if you have access to Apple TV+, check out Ted Lasso

Quick synopsis without giving anything away (all in the first episode of season 1). Rich lady takes English Premier League team from her philandering husband in their acrimonious divorce. She says it's the only thing he truly cares about, so she decides to ruin it, sacks the coach, and hires an FCS or DivII college football coach, Ted Lasso, who just won his level's national championship, expecting him to show up and be a complete embarrassment. Hilarity ensues.

Ted Lasso is played by Jason Sudeikis, and he's phenomenal in the role. Most of the other actors I've never seen before of heard of, but the acting and the writing is superb, and the show is absolutely bonkers funny.

The first two seasons were definitely weird, with different actors playing George and Jerry's fathers. George was basically Woody Allen instead of Larry David. Kramer was essentially the Stanley Spadowski character that Michael Richards played in UHF (the Weird Al movie).

This. I loved that show in spite of a pretty bad first season and Jerry Seinfeld. It was the writing and all the situations George/Kramer/Elaine got themselves into and those three actors in particular that made the show. That's all Larry David's writing and those three actors really being terrific comedic actors.

I mean....c'mon...George quits his job and then goes back and just pretends nothing ever happened. George makes up a fake charity during christmas time to make donations in his co-workers names' as his christmas gifts to them. Shit was genius.

Certainly not the best TV show ever......but I think it absolutely had the most powerful......emotional finale of any TV show.  Six Feet Under had me tearing up pretty good. The final 5-10 minute montage stands with basically any scene ever put on film....movie or television. I now know why it's commonly mentioned as one of the greatest series finales in television history. While the series may not have aged perfectly.....I am certainly glad that I invested the time to watch the entire thing. Even if just for the final payoff.

scifi: the expanse is one of the best. final season coming up, hopefully they have a good plan to close it out.

drama/action: jack ryan is fun.

comedy: lasso is a good call.

those are all shows currently running/in production.

for an older show that started out great and fizzled with no direction or idea how to end: lost. had so much potential and created so many interesting story lines, writers got preoccupied with creating story lines they forgot to close some of them.

Have you read the books? Really solid.

Interesting that the final season is already coming up. The final book isn't due to be released until ~November this year.

I hope that unlike Game of Thrones, they actually worked with the authors to make the series and the books have the same ending.

I'm definitely interested in watching this one, but not until after I read the final book.

And speaking of GoT, I'm really hoping that Martin finishes and releases the series before he dies...

I don't want to research it too heavily (since when I do watch the series I don't want spoilers), but looking back at the plot summaries of the books, I can see it.

The end of book 6 is the end of a particular story arc, and I could see it being a place to end the TV series as well.

Book 7 introduces a new story arc that is a slight offshoot from a few things that WEREN'T cleared up at the end of book 6, that portends to change everything. So I'm waiting with bated breath for book 9 to come out so I can read how it turns out!

i have not read the books, though they're on my list next, i think. soon anyway.

as i understand it, there's a time jump in the books sometimes soon after the events of the show's upcoming season, so the show will just wrap up before that time jump. obviously just speculation, but that seems a decent judgement.

That would make it difficult for the cast to have continuity without a bunch of "look old makeup" lol...

Speaking of sci-fi being turned into shows, Foundation is coming out on Apple TV+.

I suppose I'll have to go back and read that 7-book trilogy again. Haven't read it since I was probably a pre-teen.

I'd want to get them on Kindle but also want my son to read them (he has his own Kindle account so we don't share it as a household account), so need to figure out if I can find them in paperback instead for a reasonable price rather than having to buy it twice electronically...

Do you have 1/2 price books there, or something similar?  They usually have a lot of Asimov.

I'm very much looking forward to this, I guess I'm going to have to subscribe to Apple TV for a while to binge it.

Also, have they stated it'll cover all 7?  I was assuming it would only cover the first three.  I've got all of them in paperback in my personal library (as well as pretty much every other Asimov, Heinlein, Clark, Herbert, Bradbury, Anthony, book ever written.  And that doesn't even really cover the Fantasy section...:) )

Apple TV+ has been pretty cool. Ted Lasso, as previously stated, is hilarious. The Morning Show is pretty good. They've got some other things that look intriguing that I haven't given a shot yet.

BTW I say I want to read the Foundation series in advance of watching the show, but my typical MO with most movies or TV shows based on books is to intend to read them BEFORE watching the series/movie, but then I read them and never actually watch it.

Yeah, I basically rate all scifi shows/movies on whether she'd like it or not.

I'm sure Apple TV is okay.  I've already got too many streaming services, I don't have much interest in adding another one.

But I'm definitely interested in Foundation, so I'll certainly grab it for whatever period of time I need to, to watch it.

I'd recommend doing it for a month of 2 and just binge the good ones. wait till foundation s1 is done and pay for a month and while you have it watch lasso, mythic quest, etc. that's what i've done with other services.

Yup, I'll get it for however long it takes me to binge Foundation, for sure.

This thread is long now, did anyone mention The Wonder Years?  That was an excellent TV show.

Great show.  Wasn't available on DVD because the production company didn't want to pay the giant licensing fees due to all of the music used.

There's a new Wonder Years coming on.  Fred Savage is involved.  It's a black cast.

Interesting... Is it going to be a "period" set sit-com like the original was? I wonder if it'll be like the original and be 60s/70s, or be more contemporary.

If it's written well, anyone can be the target audience.

If it's not...

This all day long. Writing is so important but casting is incredibly important too. They honestly go hand in hand and affect the writing. Just look at The Sopranos. Greatest show ever imo and while the writing was amazing, that show point blank period is NOT the same if they don't absolutely nail the casting and hit home runs with James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, and Dominic Chianese. They almost cast Tony Sirico as Uncle Junior and Ray Liotta as Tony Soprano. That show just wouldn't have been the same without Gandfolfini and Chianese. Same thing with probably my #2 best show ever in Breaking Bad. If they don't NAIL that casting with Bryan Cranston- that is not the same show. Not even close. Honestly the best acting I've ever seen was James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in GFII, and Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad. Probably in that order.

Having said that, there is a high probability this Wonder Years remake is going to suck. The original kind of sucked in my opinion. And this is not an opinion here: basically 90+% of remakes totally suck.

The thing about the Wonder Years was that it was 80% voice-over.  You don't SEE Daniel Stern if you're a fan of the show, but his voice is intertwined and helped make the show.

I'd be interested to see if it's the same way with the new one and the voice they choose.

Iirc, TWY debuted after SB XXII.  Wash v Den.  I mostly enjoyed the show, though could never get interested in the father's character.   Probably because I was 12 when the show started.

I think that being unable to relate to Kevin's dad, was an intentional part of the show.  Because Kevin himself didn't ever relate to his father all that well.  It was a bit of a commentary on the status of the nuclear family during the time period when the show was set.  Dad was aloof and gone and working most of the time, Mom was at home taking care of the kids and the family home.

There were a couple of episodes when Kevin actually did have some moments with his dad, or FELT he had, and it made it all the more poignant.

That's my take anyway.  I loved that show.

Pretty much how I feel. I don't think the point of the show was to be able to relate to Kevin's dad, but to be able to relate to Kevin's relationship with his dad. We may not all have had a landmine in the house that we needed to tiptoe around, but maybe we had a friend with a dad like that or knew another adult we felt that way about. Anyway, I found that experience super relatable (and my dad wasn't a dick).

The show could reel you in if you had that dad who barely spoke, an asshole big brother, an older sibling that was counter-culture, or a mom who was trying to hold it all together.  For teens who held a girl up on a pedestal, it worked, too.  Some of us stopped doing that early in HS, later in HS, or never have.  Most of them probably live in their parent's basement at the age of 45, but yeah, they probably still get nervous around a pretty girl.

I identified with the hard-working, always-tired dad and probably the girl-on-a-pedestal thing.  I was middle school age, so I was probably the same age as the Kevin character was in the show, year by year.
