Rank the past 15 national champions if they played a round-robin.
06 Florida.....spanked Troy Smith & Co.
07 LSU.....2 OT losses
08 Florida......Tebow & Harvin
09 Alabama.....Ingram Heisman
10 Auburn.....Cam Newton show
11 Alabama......won rematch with LSU, all-time best pass D
12 Alabama.......McCarron can pass now, spanked ND
13 Florida St......big offense w/ Famous Jameis
14 Ohio St.......Zeke's still running
15 Alabama......Derrick Henry left, middle, and right
16 Clemson......Deshaun Watson show
17 Alabama......Hurts & Tua in their back pocket
18 Clemson......Lawrence rises, spanked Bama
19 LSU......all-time best offense?
20 Alabama.....all-time best offense?
-
Here's mine, with the understanding that the best team goes 11-3 or 10-4 and the worst team goes 3-11 or so.
.
'12 Alabama.....no weaknesses
'19 LSU
'18 Clemson
'08 Florida
'15 Alabama..could just play ball-control against everyone
'20 Alabama...Saban's worst D...but his best O.
'09 Alabama
'14 Ohio State....defense keeps them this low
'16 Clemson....so many close games
'11 Alabama.....best pass D maybe ever, but couldn't pass whenever they wanted
'13 Florida St
'17 Alabama.....Jake Coker?
'10 Auburn....1-man team vs 14 national champions? I don't see it.
'06 Florida
'07 LSU

So you deleted last night's version of this thread just to post it again this morning?
And still no takers? :D
-
I figured many people had given up on the other thread.
.
I'm so embarrassed that my attempt to enjoy a "what if" about actual college football isn't flooded with posts! You got me, BB. You're the man.
-
I'd have to do some research...
unfortunately, the Huskers have been so far from the top 5 the past 15 years, I don't watch or study the top teams enough
and certainly my memory of 10 to 15 years ago is weak
-
Yeah, I jotted down a blurb on every team and ranked them as bottom 5, top 5, then figured out the middle.
.
You just made me realize that 14 of the last 15 NCs are no further north than Clemson, SC and no further west than Baton Rouge, LA. I've been so distracted by Alabama's run...wow. Hell, not only that, but from 4 states that would be contiguous if not for a 75-mile stretch of Mississippi.
-
recruiting is apparently important
-
Necessary but not sufficient.

I don't necessarily disagree with your rankings but I would like to point out a couple things. You have your 08 Florida team higher than Bama's 09 team. The 09 Florida team that Bama crushed was virtually identical to the 08 Florida team. Virtually everybody came back fpr Florida including Tebow. That Bama team was 14-0, beat six ranked teams and had Mark Ingram. You might want to rethink that.

Maybe, but it was missing Dan Mullen in place of Steve Addazio. Mullen - not an easy replacement.
-
I seriously doubt Mullen would have reversed that 32-13 mauling Julio and the boys put on Florida that night.

Uhhh, no Percy Harvin, no Mullen as OC, no Carlos Dunlap.
I may have thought it through.
-
I always argue over game outcomes that were never played. Well, no, I don't. It's a silly meaningless exercise to me.
But I don't care.
-
That's the spirit!

Many says this, but look at their avg scores:
2008: 44-13
2009: 36-12
Whether everyone was back or not, the 09 team wasn't as good as the 08 team. Percy Harvin was kinda good.

I don't say this.....

It reminds me a lot of OSU not returning Tom Herman in 2015. The offense for them became a heck of a lot less interesting.
-
won't argue uf/bama.
what's interesting to me is you have '12 bama as the tops overall when i'm not sure id consider it top half of just the bama teams.
you say they have no weakness, and that's true, there's no glaring weakness, but they're something just not there with that team. arguably the best oline for bama ever though which is impressive enough.
think i'd go
20 bama - 1 3rd qtr collapse vs uf from having a win margin record similar to 95 'braska. and vs all sec, nd and osu. gotta be one of the toughest single season schedules all time.
19 lsu - might be recency bias, but they're also in all time great argument.
15 bama
18 clemson
11 bama
08 uf
14 osu
09 bama
13 fsu
16 clemson
17 bama
10 au
06 uf
07 lsu
not much different. honestly, after the top 2, the next 6-8 are fairly interchangeable. so are the last 4-5 but they need to be at end.

You definitely have a unique situation to be ranking so many great Bama squads in such a short time period....you'd be the expert, though.
Where do you put '12?
-
I'd probably put LSU #1, mostly because I think that year was perhaps the strongest in college football I can remember in some time. OSU last year was statistically one of the best teams ever and came in third.

Ha. Apparently I’d just leave them out altogether.
probably after 16 Clemson. Some of these are circular though. Like I think I’d take 12 bama over 13 FSU but not 16 Clemson. I don’t know. Those middle ones are all jumbled up to me.

Right, that's why I think if they played a round-robin the team coming out on top would be something like 10-4.
If you have 19 LSU at the top, it's biggest challenger probably isn't the next-best team, but a ball-control '15 Bama or an all-time great pass D like '11 Bama.

I agree - these playoff NCs have a little extra on their resumes, for sure.
19 LSU's defense wasn't NC-elite, but look who they beat.
-
Does anyone think any of these teams would be favored over '19 LSU?
-
it's very possible, great group of teams
but, you'd have to ask Vegas

Everyone remembers what they did to OU, but they also only beat Auburn 23-20. That AU team had a great D-line.
Florida's 06 team had great pass-rushing DEs.
09 Bama's D-line took out McCoy.
14 OSU had Joey Bosa and 3 others with 10+ TFL
16 and 18 Clemson's D-lines had great players both inside and outside.
-
IMHO that Clemson team of 2018 with Trevor Lawrence and a host of great d-linemen and wrs and that blew out Alabama is easily the best team that I have seen. The 2019 LSU team was a great one, but its statistics are no better than 2020 Bama, who accomplished its merit against a 100% SEC schedule. The LSU team beat Auburn by 3, Alabama by 5, and A&M by 7. They beat Bama with Tua less than three weeks from ankle surgery. The 2020 Alabama only had one close game the entire year. Yes, 2020 Bama would have been favored over 2019 LSU.
-
Am I the only one who feels like 2020 Alabama's stars were the focal point and not the quality of the team as a whole?
OMG the first WR Heisman-winner in 30 years!!!
OMG Mac Jones had the most efficient season ever!!
OMG Najee Harris is an NFL RB!!!
.
It's almost as if it's "Big, Bad Bama" fatigue or something. Kind of like how no one would get more than 3 MVPs in baseball (for the longest time). I feel like 2020 Bama was covered differently just for variety-sake.
-
the WR was pretty good
-
the WR was pretty good
Almost as good as the other one that got hurt.
-
as good, just not as fast
Al Davis would agree with you
