Title: Wake Up and Smell the Chaos (SOC 12-5-20)
Post by: MaximumSam on December 05, 2020, 06:29:35 AM
This whole year has been one long exercise in learning how to embrace chaos.  Am I going to work today? Are my kids going to school today?  As someone who likes having a routine, it was really taxing the hell out of me for a while.  At some point, though, I learned how to stop caring and learned to embrace the fresh hell that each new day gave us.

So it is today.  Supposedly, OSU is in East Lansing about to play a game at noon.  Might it get cancelled? Sure?  Do we know is able to play? Nope! But here are, still enjoying a day of college football, posting nonsense on message boards, and cooking up some fine meals.  Which reminds me to hit up Krogers here in a bit.  No idea of what they will have or what I will make, but that's just part of the deal this year.

A schedule for those who still believe in them

Noon
OSU at MSU, ABC
Nebraska at Purdue, BTN
Penn State at Rutgers, FS1

3:30
Iowa at Illinois, FS1
Indiana at Wisconsin, ABC

Others
TAMU at Auburn, noon, ESPN: TAMU is on the outside looking in of the playoffs, but another loss for them would be quite pleasing to the Cincy's of the world
BYU at Coastal Carolina, 5:30, ESPNU: Two good undefeated teams who are playing each other on days' notice.  Fun to see

This. Still working on it from my end.

Today I will make a Bolognese and serve it over spaghetti. I've got some fresh green beans so I'll probably cook those.

Or, today I will make the triple tail my wife picked up at the farmer's market yesterday. Maybe some homemade fries to go with, and the beans.

Or, today I will make burgers using my home grind, with some homemade fries to go with, and the beans.

We also have some mini smoked weanies and crescent rolls. I like those.

I sure wish Indiana had their starting quarterback. I still think the Wisconsin versus Indiana game will be excellent but it had a playoff kind of feel to it before he went down.

OSU better look out. MSU almost always plays up to its competition.

UNL gets another win.

Rutgers gets destroyed today.

Illinois gets the upset win that Lovie needs.

Wisconsin goes down hard to IU in a crushing 1 point loss at home.

I'm all about that spaghetti with Bolognese.  Chaos!

Tonight my isc&a aggie wife and I are going out to dinner for my birthday.  We have outdoor reservations at a Northern Italian (not American-Italian) restaurant, where I've had the branzino and it's fantastic.  I'll likely be choosing between that, and their braised short ribs.

Well didn't see anything particularly inspiring at the grocery store.  Probably means something like a quesadilla, or maybe a taquito, or maybe a chimichanga.  Something fried and filled with cheese, is what I'm saying.

OSU definitely better be on notice.  MSU isn't particularly good, but they are going to come out and try to throw the ball down the field and hit the quarterback, which are two things OSU isn't that great at preventing.  I also have no idea who is out today, but if it's anyone in the secondary they are going to really struggle.

I find pork belly to be hit and miss - if it's good it's really good, but if it isn't cooked right it can be pretty gross

My pellet pooper crapped out on me last night. Throwing some sort of error code.

Luckily I was able to fire up the little kamado real quick and get my pork tenderloins cooked.

Tonight is some carne asada on the big kamado for tacos.

Tomorrow is 3 racks of ribs smoked on the big kamado to celebrate my wife's b-day with the kids... Her b-day isn't until next weekend and I'll be making her annual request (filet and a baked potato) for that, but she requested ribs with the kids since they're here this weekend.

As with many things, maybe it's one of those things that you have to do it yourself if you want it done right.

A smoker and some pork belly is all you need for poor man's burnt ends. Which are amazing.

Not quite, that one's next year.  We're planning a Europe trip for next summer to celebrate.  We'll see if that happens, I'm not so optimistic right now but I guess ya never know.  If not, we'll probably hit the Caribbean.

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes.  As always, since my bday falls on Pearl Harbor day, I ask all of my friends and neighbors to think about the tragedy of that day, the horrors of war, the sacrifices of our veterans, and Hope for peace and a better world.

OSU missing a big chunk of their oline.  No Thayer Munford, Josh Myers, Nicholas Petite-Frere, or Paris Johnson.  That's their center and top three tackles.  Also missing Josh Proctor, which is another big loss in the secondary.  Going to be a slog.

And yeah, I love braised short ribs but I do them fairly often myself, and fairly well if I do say so.

But there are three things it's hard for me to pass up on a menu:

Rabbit stew
Duck
Foie gras

I love them all, and rarely cook them myself, so I'll fall for them quickly if I see them.

Man, Michigan.  Watching the Fox pregame show and Brady Quinn was talking up Rashad Weaver, DE for Pitt.  Called him the best defensive player in America and will be a top 20 draft pick.  And I'm like, I recall that name.  So I google him, and he is one of those guys that was committed to Michigan forever but who Harbaugh dropped at the last second.  Whoops.

That’s a big fat ouch! Also missing their stall wart middle linebacker Tuf Borland.

The fans like to beat on him but just watch as the coaches who watch the film will vote him as all Big Ten this year. He has been nothing short of special this year

Well, we’ll see just how much depth means for Ohio State today.

I know I seem to be the resident pedant at times but I can't let this slide without comment.    Why is there a common tendency for folks to add an 's' to Kroger?

I hear this often, same with 'Meijers' among others stores which do not end in an 's'.
Of course we take pleasure and enjoy intentionally omitting an 's' from a certain conference member.

First, happy birthday @utee94 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=15) !

I was lucky enough to know a Pearl Harbor veteran. He joined the Navy in early 1941 at the age of 17 and was on the USS California until it was sunk from under him on December 7, 1941. He had to swim through oil slicks to Ford Island.

After that he was transferred to a cruiser which was promptly sunk, at Coral Sea. Fortunately, he survived the rest of the war without being sunk again and returned to my small town in Ohio where he ran a cut stone company up until just a few years before he passed away.

Sadly, I'm down to only knowing one WWII vet. Oddly, he is one of the older WWII vets I knew. He is almost 100 and was in the Navy before the war started. He spent WWII flying out of South America in a blimp looking for U-boats.

Certainly the OL is the hit.  23 players out, 7 starters, but otherwise scattered.  If MSU can get pressure with 4, that's the one thing they MIGHT still have going for them.  Still not touching that line

If?  Both starting tackles out, plus the first guy in off the bench(Paris Johnson)
MSU front 4 is a challenge for the Buckeye starters.

it also will impact the running game so it will be interesting to see how creative Ohio State can be with their play calling. I expect quite a few quick passes and roll outs.

MSU's most impactful defensive lineman from last week, is in a boot, and out for the year.  The interior line has been MUCH better than the ends.  Jones and Mallory are still a solid duo, but I have no idea who rotates in.  The ends have to step it up, which they haven't done since Rutgers, where they were the one group who actually showed up

I don't know why Ross Els is on the staff.  You have proven top level coaches at each level of the defense, except you have Tressell and Barnett BOTH doing DBs, and this clown Ross Els he brought in to coach LBs and STs, and those have been by far the two biggest weaknesses of this team, relative to talent.

More of the same.

Special teams is awful, although they did manage to block a punt that lead to a FG right before half.

Penalties everywhere.  Giving Nebraska field position and negating good offensive plays.

Zone defense is being shredded.

Offense just can't get anything going.

This is a disaster.

Watching A&M @ Auburn - good, competitive game.  3 things really bother me concerning Auburn games:
1 - the announcers' obsession with Schwartz - track guy, "world class speed" and all that....I think every program has had that guy, and it's stupid.  They keep getting mentioned and drooled over, but they wind up only scoring like 2-3 TDs their whole careers.  Being a step faster than everyone else and being a poor football player is stupid and unproductive.  Announcers need to get over it.
.
2 - they always have a player nicknamed "Big Cat".......why?  Tigers?  Good one.  It's lame and then it's repetitive.  Yawn.
.
3 - Bo Nix isn't very good.  AU has basically put all its eggs in his basket.  He's a run & pass guy, a one-read-and-run guy, and those guys can be good.  Vince Young was one of those guys, Tebow was, etc.  And it's not that Nix's crime is not being Young or Tebow, it's that he's carrying the load of their offense and simply isn't especially good.  He'd having a pretty good game today, but for a run/pass QB, this is his first game with 2 rushing TDs.  Seriously?  Basically, I'm saying a program like Auburn shouldn't be carried by a guy this limited.

This is a total embarrassment.  I like Brohm, but there is no defending this garbage.  Team looks completely incompetent.

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes.  As always, since my bday falls on Pearl Harbor day, I ask all of my friends and neighbors to think about the tragedy of that day, the horrors of war, the sacrifices of our veterans, and Hope for peace and a better world.
The house occupied by the family of my grandmother on the morning of December 7, 1941 was smack in the middle of the Pearl City Peninsula, not far from the Pan Am dock. At the time, she was 14. They fled to the cane fields above Pearl City, and came back to find several bullet holes in their house, including one in the dining room.

The Gators have done this for a few games in a row.  A combination of non-threatening opponents and those opponents playing keep-away with the football.  Oh, and our defense not being a traditional 'Florida defense.'

We score going into the half, score coming out of the half, and the final score winds up something expected.

If you're not privy to it, do yourself a favor and look up Tennessee's 2nd half woes this season.  They're epic.

Made me think of a weekly lottery.
For OOC games, all 130 or whatever teams have a ball bouncing around in the bubble, and on Tuesday, you see who you're paired up with.  They'd televise it and everyone would watch.
Clemson vs New Mexico, Ohio State vs Georgia, Texas vs Texas A&M, etc.  Random...maybe good, maybe weak.

Then you'd do it for each conference, the same way.  You already played someone, they're removed for your turn.

Improv Football

Actually, Mormons are especially gullible.
All religious people have some amount of gullibility to blame.  But there's also delusion, indoctrination, and others.  I'm not 100% on the ratios, though.  Indoctrination is probably the largest aspect.

Love the look.
Careful with the heat from the fire around your TV. These new flat screens can get finicky around hot spots.
Truth, nephenw installed a flat screen to close to heating source and had to move it.

The Badger offense is a mess right now. Still missing players. Defense did all it could do.

And... Bastages...

Like a high school quarterback without a wristband or any signs with cartoon characters on it to signify play, Mertz trotted to the sideline took a play call from a coach or player and jogged back to the huddle to call the play.

Wisconsin almost never does this but started on Saturday after feat that Indiana was stealing its signals.

"We had a couple of calls that were, we got our signal and we heard 'outside zone!'" said Mertz. "And when that happens a little bit, you just got to play the game. It's a chess match. You got to go to the sideline, you got to go get your calls. Obviously it's different but it had to be done tonight."

I knew it!  That’s exactly what I thought as soon as I saw him walking over to the sideline to get plays. Why else would you be doing that?

Penalties were 8-1 yesterday. It was hard to watch. This was UW's final play. No call, in the end zone.

The toughest was a no-call on UW's final offensive play, in the end zone.

Oh I disagree.  I think it's an essential part of the game, especially in an era where there is so much communication from the sideline to the field.

Switched back/forth to UCLA/ASU game - interesting.Bruins were up 17-0 in the 1st half then seemingly went dormant the 2nd half.ASU pulled ahead despite fumbling on the  Bruin two from a bad snap, they also had a 40 yrd TD called back.UCLA finally came a wake late to pull ahead.

Coastal Carolina beats BYU 22-17 by stopping the Cougars on the 2 yd line with time expiring.CFB still exciting as hell

When you miss so many games, it's tough. IU was playing its 7th game. UW was playing its 4th and didn't play last week.

They looked great to start the season, and then got 2020'd for two weeks. Then Michigan happened, but I think that team has quit on their coaches.

Florida's 30-20 advantage over Tennessee is even more impressive when you consider how completely dominant Tennessee was early on:
From 2005-2020 UF is 15-1 against TN.

Indeed.
Historically, Tennessee is firmly 2nd in the SEC, behind Bama.  But a lot of that success was pre-WWII.

Since integrating, the Vols are ho-hum vanilla average.  And we own them so hard.

Florida's 30-20 advantage over Tennessee is even more impressive when you consider how completely dominant Tennessee was early on:
  • Tennessee won the first ten meetings (1916-1953).
  • Tennessee won 13 of the first 15 meetings (1916-1971) and over that span the average score was 19-7.
  • As late as 2004, Tennessee still held a four game lead over the Gators, 19-15.
From 2005-2020 UF is 15-1 against TN.
10 meetings from 1916 to 1953.  You'd never know that they were in the same conference with each other.
For much of its history, the SEC was more a consortium of teams that occasionally played each other than a true conference.

Very true. For many years Georgia Tech, who was one of the SEC big boys, refused to even play the Mississippi teams despite being in the same conference. One might think that had something to do with segregation, but Tech was as lilly white as Ole Miss.

Exactly.

When I read @OrangeAfroMan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=58) 's post I was surprised that UF was ahead of UTenn overall and flat out shocked that it was by such a large margin.  I knew, as he stated above, that TN was generally the SEC's #2 for much of their history.  I looked at it as somewhat similar to tOSU/M meaning:

However, tOSU STILL hasn't caught Michigan in the H2H series so I mentally converted that to TN/UF and would have assumed that UF hadn't caught TN yet especially because I also assumed that TN's pre-Spurrier lead over UF would have been bigger than M's lead over tOSU from the same timeframe.

I was right about all of that, but I didn't realize how few games UT and UF had played prior to 1990.  1989 was the last time UF and TN didn't play.  Prior to that:
From 1990 to 2019:

The lack of early games does seem weird for two teams that have been in the same conference since 1921.

It's part of the reason 4 of the 12 SEC schools held the other hostage for the permanent cross-divisional games.  Sure, UGA-Auburn and Bama-TEnnessee had longtime rivalries with each other, but the rest of us didn't with the others in the conference.

Take Florida, pre-division play.  We were paired up with LSU.  Why?  Don't ask why, there's no real reason.  Up to 1990 (when they were decided, not implemented for play until 1992):
Gms - Opp
69 - UGA
68 - Auburn
49 - Miami (OOC)
45 - Miss State
41 - Kentucky
39 - GA Tech (OOC)
37 - LSU.......................so we're paired with the 7th-most played program, 5th-most within the then-current SEC, and 3rd-most West team.  What?!?  Well, UGA was married to Auburn.  And it wasn't Miss State because......reasons?

Okay, so maybe LSU's most common East program was Florida?
Nuuupe.

Gms-Opp
81 - Miss State
80 - Tulane (OOC)
74 - Ole Miss
54 - Rice (OOC)
52 - Alabama
43 - Texas A&M (OOC)
41 - Kentucky
37 - Florida..................So the 8th-most played, 5th within the SEC, and the 2nd-most East team.
.
2 actual rivals basically held the rest of us hostage to get their games, and the rest of us were thrown together like a sandwich.
Alabama-Tennessee were PB& J,
Auburn-Georgia were ham & cheese,
The rest of us are bologna & ketchup.

It seems to me it would have made more sense to just not have permanent cross-overs for the other four (now five) teams in each division.  At this point I don't think there would be too much wailing and gnashing of teeth even if they eliminated Bama/TN so they could just be like the B1G with only one permanent cross-over (UGA/Auburn for the SEC, PU/IU for the B1G).

Bama/TN:
Here is Bama's winning percentage and # of games against each (then) member of the SEC through 1991 (ie, immediately prior to SEC Divisional play beginning in 1992 - I realize that they made the call in 1990 but I'm using the start date rather than the decision date):

SEC-E teams in Bold.
Back then TN/Bama appeared to make sense since TN had the best record against Bama of the SEC-E teams and on top of that second best was UGA who was paired up with Auburn so the next best would have been Florida and, pre-1992 that wasn't close at all with Bama owning better than a 2:1 advantage over the Gators.

Since then (not including this year, 1992-2019), Bama against SEC-E teams:

None of those stand out to me as must-see every year rivalries.  Who cares?

Except that this had absolutely nothing to do with it.
Both for either:
a)  how well each team did vs Bama (huh?)
b)  best vs best, next best vs next best, etc..

Nope.  It was 4 teams whining that they'd lose their rival.  The other 8 just bent over.
