That could end Wisconsin's eligibility for the CG which means that, I think, NU could clinch this weekend.

I don't see NU losing until the CCG. I think it's a moot point.

Honestly, at this point, I just want to watch football. I won't get to this weekend, unfortunately. We will be on a charter, fishing on Saturday. Can't argue with the host, and he's a Brit, so the only football normally on his TV is soccer. Rugby too. Ah well.

I've been 2020'd.

I wouldn't go anywhere near Lake Superior ice until there's a foot or more, and if the lake is heavily iced over. Too easy for a floe to break off.

Some of my co-workers down in Roch will be ice fishing on the Mississippi River swamps over by Winona as soon as they freeze over.

Resorts on Red Lake and Lake of the Woods are showing pictures of 3-4" of ice already, and will be starting their ice ops this weekend.

Yeah, I posted a link above. World wars, Spanish flu and countless other events have not cancelled the AXE, but this might do it. Longest continuously running rivalry in the game canceled by China.

If Minnesota has to cancel this weekend's game, are there any other games looking likely to be cancelled such that Wisconsin could replace them with the other team cancelled on?

My first thought was that maybe Maryland might have to cancel again but some issues:

Any other teams with COVID issues?

The other thing is that IF Minnesota and Maryland both had to cancel, in theory they could rearrange UW's, IU's, UMD's, and MN's schedule the next two weeks:

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin cornerback Caesar Williams questioned pass interference calls made during this past weekend's loss and said the penalties won't cause the Badgers to play any less aggressively the rest of the season.

The Badgers were called for pass interference four times Saturday in Northwestern's 17-7 victory. Two of the penalties came on the game's opening drive, which ended with a Wildcats touchdown.

"At times I felt like the ref maybe had purple underneath their jerseys; I mean, under their white-and-black shirts," Williams said Tuesday.

Williams had an interception nullified in the second quarter when he was called for pass interference. He said defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard wasn't coaching the secondary any differently because of the penalties and said "he doesn't see them as pass interference calls and neither did the defense."

"Maybe refs aren't used to seeing perfect reps and they throw a flag," Williams said while laughing. "It is a hard job, but I don't think a flag should hinder a defensive back's confidence in what they do."

This weeks games by our current Power Rankings (https://www.cfb51.com/big-ten/b1g-power-rankings-week-5-18896/):

Yikes!  By Power Ranking this might be the worst group of seven games I've ever seen.  I'm working on the theory here that the best games are #1 vs #2, #2 vs #3 . . . #13 vs #14 while the worst games are #1 vs #14, #2 vs #14, #1 vs #13, etc.

The game between the two teams ranked closest together is #10 Michigan vs #13 Penn State but even that isn't terribly interesting.  For one thing, they are separated by three spots so it is ok not great.  Additionally, the higher ranked team (Michigan) is at home so probably less chance of an upset.  Finally, even with the same separation and HFA, #1 vs #4 is a lot more interesting than #10 vs #13 because it has an impact on rankings, CG's, etc.  This . . .  Well, this is two coaches with increasingly warm seats leading programs with great histories but teams that currently . . . are not good.

I'm really curious to see Maryland again but even if they manage to play the game in Bloomington, I'm not sure how much it will tell us.  I'm curious because they've only played three games.  I think we have them a wee bit overrated at #7 because their first two (a 40 point blowout loss at NU and an OT home win over MN) aren't very impressive.  OTOH, their most recent game was a 16 point blowout of Penn State (it wasn't even that close, PSU scored two fourth quarter TD's to make a 35-7 blowout look somewhat respectable) was great.  That is better than tOSU's 13 point win over PSU, much better than IU's OT squeaker over PSU, and arguably better than Iowa's 20 point win over PSU because in the IA/PSU game the Hawkeyes scored the last 10 points to make a respectable looking 31-21 game into a 20 point blowout.  Thus my question:  Is Maryland the bad-looking team that got walloped by NU and needed OT to beat MN back in October or are they the good-looking team that walloped Penn State three weeks ago?  For that mater they might be something entirely different from either of those things and how would we know since we haven't seen them in almost a month.

Over in another thread, @bwarbiany (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=19) posted this:

George Karlaftis positive for COVID. Ugh.
Here is a link to an Indy Star article about it (https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/2020/11/24/purdue-defensive-end-george-karlaftis-tests-positive-covid-19/6413651002/).

I don't mean to wish Purdue any ill will.  Hopefully this is an isolated case and the rest of their team will be able to host Rutgers this weekend as scheduled.

That said, it is looking like Minnesota is going to have to cancel the Axe game this weekend so if Purdue also has to cancel that would provide an opponent for Wisconsin this weekend . . . Rutgers.  Better yet, Wisconsin is supposed to host the Axe game and Rutgers is supposed to travel to Purdue so if PU and MN both have to cancel then you could simply replace RU's road game in West Lafayette with a road game in Madison and UW's home game against MN with a home game against RU.  Obviously fans of UW aren't going to be thrilled getting Rutgers as a replacement for one of their top rivalry games but better to play Rutgers than not play this weekend!

I figured there would be more positives on both Minnesota and Purdue this week. Minnesota really should have cancelled, rather than risk further spread.

...decided in 1925 to add a twist: The winner of the game would gain possession of a real, live turtle, appropriately named "Illibuck" as a play on Illini and Buckeyes. The turtle was (ironically, as it would turn out) chosen for its long lifespan, a symbol of the eternal rivalry between the two teams.

Sadly, Illibuck would not live to see many more years: In 1927, he died after escaping from an Illinois fraternity bathtub. To avoid a repeat of such an incident, both schools decided instead to construct a wooden replica of the turtle, and the winner of the Ohio-State Illinois game has received that trophy ever since.

When I had initially heard of its origon story, it was a fraternity bathtub full of beer. But that particular detail cannot be corroborated anywhere on the inter-webz. So the beer must have been urban legend, I guess. Although it really would explain why the thing died 100 years short of its expected lifespan.

man how can you bet not knowing who might be out for a reason or another?

just because Wisconsin did a bad job keeping a lid on the covid deal I cannot believe all the other schools don't have 1 or 2 cases that sprung up this past week.

and noooo one is talking about it until pre game warm ups.

losing a position group is tough and heartbreaking if it is your QB room affected

but no one knows anything until game day but the coaches.

tough on Vegas

Irresponsible behavior for sure. They should NOT have played last week.

The Gophers played last Friday's game against Purdue without 22 players "medically unavailable." On Monday, the Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck told reporters his team was testing Monday afternoon and awaiting results. The Gopher didn't practice on Tuesday due to “presumptive COVID-19 positive tests” from Monday, Minnesota Athletics said in a statement on Monday.

played or not they most likely would not have played this week?  22 players included real injuries not just COVID if I heard right there were about 12 players somewhere in the COVID protocol pre game last week(spread out in the 21 days)
this week more are hitting
this mentality means if you have some positive tests you should not play the games?  why even play the season then?
the guidelines were set up and teams follow them or they don't.  Minnesota followed them pre game Purdue and now again Pre Game Wisconsin.

just so you fur doesnt get all bunched up there is talk about a rescheduling of the Axe game and if the Big Ten feels that it can be done it will

They should not have played last week. Period. Now Purdue maybe could be in trouble too, from being exposed last weekend.

If they can convince the dumbasses in Rosemont to let them play in Indy, great. If not, a 113 year streak is history.

It is kind of crazy that every top four team has had a game giving up at least 450 yards of offense and 35 points.  Haven't looked but TAMU and Florida probably have as well.

the Gooophers should be happy too, but we're not.

more football, not less

I really don't think playing in a football game against a few opponents that carry the virus is a super spreader event

maybe it will hit Purdue hard, past games haven't shown this to be the case.

yeah

you are right everyone should follow Barry's lead and when important games are on the schedule like 113 year streak for the Axe we should not have quarantined for 14 days prior and cancelled those games heading into the week with the Badgers so this game could get  in

I have not heard  how many Purdue players are out?  how did Illinois feel after playing your game and then taking weeks to get back to full health?

this season is full of crap and just playing any games is a gift.

Both Fan bases if they really are truthful would say no matter what they would want to play the game. sure there are a few poking fun at the irony at this cancellation but kids are sick and this is what was decided by the CDC/BigTen Presidents that the Commissioner is enforcing.  you give that Dumbass way too much credit

If we get to play in December, great!  if not COVID or China FLu can be engraved on the Axe for 2020

The double edged sword is alive and well.
I don't think he Ducked anyone
he just didn't think it wise to play a 4th string QB and other back ups in a game.  that is not ducking that is trying to put a narrative out there about health that wasn't really the basis behind the decision.

Also, it was not Barry who made the decisions to cancel.

It was Becky Blank, the wonderful UW Chancellor [from Minnesota (undergrad)].

I hope she retires before Barry. Maybe that's why he's holding out from doing so...

you are right

I may give AD's too much credit

it is the presidents that have all the control- them and their lawyers. CYOA is what drives them.

heck if the season could have started weeks before we could have built in Bye weeks for the conference to allow for make up games etc.

play 2 games take a week off play two more take a week off etc...

still not play OOC games and the season would have been more complete.

possibly 2 games left for him to showcase to NFL scouts

against Northwestern's very good pass defense - maybe not a great opportunity

at Nebraska on Dec. 12th - might be cold - not much to play for.

talk to an agent and grab the cash

It is not looking good for the Buckeyes. The other teams that have had to cancel one game due to COVID, also had to cancel a second one. That would make three for tOSU and knock them out of CG contention.

With the big tens 21 day rule anybody who tested positive is done for the regular season.

Hoosiers may just get their shot at a big 10 championship

Indiana-Northwestern would be the most 2020 B1G CCG ever.

Even moreso than Indiana-Purdue, because that would delight people in its futility, whereas Indiana and Northwestern not being traditional rivals makes it just ever so more meaningless.
