Easy.  Both season have faults.  1997s has unique things we'll never see again (defensive Heisman, split national title), while 1996 just had a QB put up monster numbers in an offense designed to put up monster numbers, who backed into a national title thanks two two upsets, and then beating a team they already lost to.

Well first of all, you could correct 1996 ending with Alabama moving to #1.  That didn't happen.

1996 was great - no split NC, an all-timer of a RB, and the best team on top.  I don't see much of a choice, here.
