The top 150 HCs in history made me peruse the records and here are some tidbits I thought worthy of sharing....
.
Here's a list of HCs by win%, but including only those HCs with more wins that anyone above them.
.881 Knute Rockne, ND (105 wins)
.864 Frank Leahy, BC, ND (107)
.854 Urban Meyer, BG, Utah, Florida, OSU (187)
.836 Tom Osborne, Nebraska (255)
.780 Bear Bryant, MD, UK, A&M, Alabama (323)
.749 Joe Paterno, Penn St (409)
So basically, these are the best HCs of all time, balancing out success x volume.

Brother HCs from another Mother - HCs with similar career records.....
.
Mack Brown has had about the same career record as Lou Holtz.
244-123-1...........vs.............249-132-7
.
Nick Saban & Bo Schembechler
247-65-1.....vs......234-65-8
.
Dabo Swinney & Bob Devaney
129-30-0.......vs......136-30-7
.
Lloyd Carr & John McKay
122-40-0....vs.....127-40-8
.
Iowa's Hayden Fry (RIP), has the most career losses....by 35. 2nd place is Dick Tomey, who has a HC twin:
Dick Tomey & Johnny Majors
183-145-7....vs....185-137-10
.
On to similar win% of very different volumes....
Bret Bielema & Ben Schwartzwalder (Syracuse)
.626.....vs......626
.
Jimmy Johnson & John Heisman
.699.....vs.......698
.
Joe Paterno & Darrell Royal
.749.....vs......749
.
Barry Switzer & Tom Osborne
.837.....vs.....836
.
Gary Patterson & Bobby Dodd
.711.....vs.....713
I guess it's easy to overlook modern HCs despite the old-time legends having the same outcomes.
-
More similar win%, not accounting for volume....
Barry Alvarez & Butch Jones & Don Nehlen
.609.....vs...609.....vs.......609
.
Ralph Friedgen & Rick Neuheisel
.600......vs.......600
.
.
.
Similary careers overall:
Paul Johnson & Joe Tiller
128-89-0.....vs...126-92-1

Fun with wins & losses (and context):
OU legend Bud Wilkinson won the same number of games as Les Miles
(with 35 fewer losses, so far).
.
Mack Brown has as many losses as Amos Alonzo Stagg
(but 38 fewer wins).
.
Embattled OSU HC John Cooper lost fewer games than Bear Bryant (84 to 85)
(he won 131 fewer games than him, too).
.
Mike Gundy (OKST) has the same number of wins as Dabo Swinney (Clemson)
(but 33 more losses).
.
Barry Switzer had fewer wins than Tommy Tuberville
(and 70 fewer losses).
.
3 legendary HCs had the same number of wins: 165 - Frank Howard (Clemson), Bobby Dodd (GT), Yost (UM)
(Howard and his rock had more losses than the other 2 combined).
