I thought consensus All American meant AP All American. He was dissed by the Lou Groza voters for a Georgia kicker with less weighty numbers who blew two field goal tries in the SEC Championship game. Regionalism. Iowa's Kicker Keith Duncan is named consensus All American, and at www.Hawkcentral.com the article about Keith Duncan supplied the definition of "Consensus All American."
"To become a consensus all-American, a player must be named a first-teamer by a majority of five selected postseason honor teams: the FWAA, American Football Coaches Association, The Associated Press, the Sporting News, and the Walter Camp Foundation."
I am too lazy to look it up. And this will open a new dialogue. Who are the other 2019 Big Ten Consensus All Americans?

Ohio State's are Chase Young and Jeff Okudah. I'm not sure if Ohio State goes by the same publications as those in your list, but those 2 hit the 5 that Ohio State goes by.

I think the UGA kicker got a kind of "career award". It surprised me some. He also missed a tying FG in the USCe game. He certainly is an excellent kicker overall, and a kind of legend on campus for his spectacles.

Yes, that is the definition. Granted it's sort of an outdated group of selectors.

Unanimous = 5 out of 5
Consensus = 3-5 out of 5
All-American = any 1 of the 5
The big ESPN college football encyclopedia book does a good job specifying this. I'll post a pic.

So the full offense listed in the top half are the "consensus" AAs. I put red dots by the "unanimous" AAs. The bottom half are guys who were on 1-2 AA teams, but are not "consensus".

The voting entities are listed along the top, right. So you could see who had which player on their AA team, and if that jived with the others or not.

The 73 season is a poor example, actually, as back then, the AA team had a bunch of RBs and 1 WR, and so you wouldn't necessarily get all the RBs listed on 3+ AA teams.

Anyway, this book is useful to find out which jackwagon publication left a certain guy off their AA team and such.

It would be (college football-nerdy) fun to go through and list all the guys who were 1 vote away from being unanimous AAs.

It gets kind of wonky, though. In the ESPN CFE, the voting bodies isn't consistent. 5 one year, 6 another, down to 4 for awhile, back up to 6. I guess it's 5 right now.

Micah Parsons is a first team AA. Not sure about what qualifies as a concensus AA though.
