good eve all, i hope this finds y'all well and in a Christmas Spirit.
Cutting to the chase:
I've decided to make some awards. Not to any of us, but from us.
i recently inherited a ShoBot CNC Router, and... I've been making stuff for weeks. It occurred to me to entwine our 'thing' here with that thing... I've (somewhat) selfishly decided to make the first of (as many as we want or think appropriate) awards, and based off of TRUE fandom. Not any commercial interests and not running some line of BS biased thing like we see all the time.
the 'first' one was "Coaching Staff of 2019", and the machine will carve it out tomorrow. attached is a rendition of the carving- on black walnut, 12"w x 4"h x 34"d... it will be stained and polished, and painted where appropriate. the image attached is what the software generates, and.. it's really accurate as to what comes off the machine. Once it's stained/finished, i'll post an updated image.
the 'bones' of the plaque ought to be apparent. however, the 'awards' aren't. This is where i'd like some help. Suggestions on awards YOU ALL THINK APPROPRIATE as well as the recipient of those awards would be a fun exercise and will likely result in the award being created and offered in the same spirit as the one going in the machine tomorrow.
Coach Jeremy Pruitt- yeah, i'm biased, but... was awarded "Coaching Staff of 2019" because i'm the one (of three) with skin in this game and carrying the load to do this. Aside from that, he did a helluva job putting and holding together that team, and a team who ultimately found themselves and bull dozed through the latter half of the season.
If any of you find this a worthwhile exercise, take the bull by the horns and start up a thread with a poll, title the award, and... we'll do it. why the hell not? to my knowledge nobody else (not corporate) is doing anything like it. I would think it would be pretty slick for coaches/staffs/players to receive an award from a TRUE fan site.
thoughts?

Question...
Assuming there is no monetary value to these awards, to provide one to a player would in no way cause an NCAA violation, right?
I assume none of us are considered "boosters" to any schools [I know I'm not], and a simple wooden plaque isn't a gift card or a $100 handshake, but I want to make sure that if there are ANY concerns here that we know about and avoid them up front.
Otherwise we have to remove players from any and all awards.
Other than that, I think this is a smashing idea.
-
I thought about that... and... We can award their coaches and request the coach holds the award in a perverted form of escrow until the player departs... and there you have it.

Yes, you are. So am I.
-
I think it's OK though, so long as the award were to come from the CFB51 organization. I like the idea. Nice looking award there, Drew.

Actually, I'm not, at least according to this:
http://www.ncaa.org/enforcement/role-boosters (http://www.ncaa.org/enforcement/role-boosters)
Because I don't live close to Purdue, I've never provided a donation in order to secure season tickets, and never donated to the John Purdue Club.
So I'm clean, because I'm 2000 miles away [and cheap]. :72:
-
I was a member of the UNL Touchdown club back in the day, but I think that club is defunct or merely evolved into something else
the season tickets that I paid for and used for over ten seasons were in someone else's name. I made the check to them, not the university.
And I live a cross the state line
not even a graduate or alum

UW considers all alumni to be boosters. I had to take a test back in the day, after the shoe bulljive. All boosters did, for compliance redemption. They wouldn't renew your tickets if you didn't take the test.
-
The booster thing is a bit sketchy to me, and open to abuse. I might have deep pockets and pay some "Alabama booster" to pay players and then turn him in.
And if I don't have season tickets or donation track records or whatever, I'm clearly not a booster in any sense that could be shown.

Too bad there's rumors of bootlegging that can't be quelled

I graduated from a high school class of 53
-
The U of Minnesota consists all season ticketholders to be boosters, even if you aren't in donation seating. Furthermore, you retain that designation indefinitely.
-
the Gophers have seating that does NOT require a donation????
WTH???

I graduated from a high school class of 53
You prolly hobble around the course like it maybe time for shuffle board

They had high schools back then? Was History class called 'Current Events'?
-
I wager that '53 high school education is better than 95% of today's University educations. Maybe not better than one in its own time but far better than today's.
-
I'm thinking he hit "5" but meant to type "8".
He ain't that old.
-
sorry for the confusion
53 kids in the graduating class of 1981

'Twas clear as a bell to me, Fearless.
These other knuckleheads are just yankin' yer chain.
-
that's ok, I was one of the knuckleheads out of the 53 kids in the class
-
is there any interest in doing awards or is this something else that falls flat?
I've got one more coat of acrylic to hit the plaque with. i decided no paint as simple is better, and it turned out fantastic (so far). I'll post an image tonight or tomorrow if anyone is interested.
what other coaching staff pulled something remarkable off this season? what individual coach or staff was exceptional in their performance?

What about an award for being a solid student-athlete?
I'm thinking of something like the Don Key Award that OU gives out.
Don Key was a three-year starter for the Sooners, an All-Big 8 guard and potential All-American until cancer surgery ended his football career in 1981. Barry Switzer established the Don Key Award in 1982.
Oklahoma coaches describe the award as the highest honor an OU football player can receive while playing for the Sooners. It goes to the player who best exemplifies the many superior qualities of Key, both on the field and in the classroom.
But maybe not. It might be difficult to get the "in the classroom" information.
Maybe other schools hand out similar awards and we could nominate candidates for the CFB51 award from those recipients.
-
There she is. Others (if others) will be same format.

I like this one.

i like it too... suggestions for candidates?
-
Elijah Sindelar... Graduated with his BSEE and currently continuing with his masters while juggling the workload and schedule of a big ten QB.
-
Nick Basquine (Norman native who walked on) and Neville Gallimore (from Canada) shared the Don Key Award.
They've done well on the field, but I have not yet found anything about their classwork.

not a football player...................
Former Husker All-American men's gymnast Anton Stephenson has been named a 2020 Today's Top Ten Award winner, the NCAA announced on Tuesday. The prestigious award is given annually to 10 outstanding senior student-athletes from the previous academic year.
Stephenson becomes Nebraska's nation-leading 18th NCAA Today's Top Ten Award recipient and is the first since Mary Weatherholt (women's tennis) in 2014. Stephenson is the third men's gymnast to win the award following in the footsteps of Patrick Kirksey (1991) and Tom Schlesinger (1989).
A four-time All-American, Stephenson finished his impressive Husker career at the 2019 NCAA Championships where he finished third on vault and seventh in the all-around, helping Nebraska to a third-place finish, its best since 1999. A Nissen-Emery Award finalist, Stephenson also won his third straight Big Ten Vault title and was named Big-Ten Co-Gymnast of the Year as a senior.
Overall, Stephenson qualified for the individual finals at the NCAA Championships each of his four years. He was a four-time Big Ten Champion, adding a conference title on parallel bars in 2018 in addition to his three vault titles. A three-time First-Team All-Big Ten selection, Stephenson also was the 2018 Big Ten Runner-Up on floor and earned third place in the All-Around in 2017. Stephenson represented the Huskers on the international stage as well, earning the 2018 USA Vault title.
Stephenson excelled outside the gym, earning Google Cloud First-Team All-America honors in 2019. A Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and the Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, Stephenson carried better than a 3.9 cumulative GPA as a nutrition and health sciences major throughout his academic career. Stephenson was named Nebraska's Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2019 and was an eight-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
Active in the community, Stephenson was a four-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and was also honored as a Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award Winner.
Stephenson was also awarded the Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship, the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship and the Frank Solich Postgraduate Scholarship. He graduated in August 2019 and currently attends medical school at UNMC in Omaha

Whoever won the Campbell Trophy?
Fun fact: the only two Heisman winners that have won the Campbell Trophy (academics, athletics, service, etc) are Gators: Wuerffel and Tebow.
