Title: A topic for next season - adopt a team
Post by: Cincydawg on December 05, 2019, 11:45:34 AM
If you are interested, you would pick some team outside "your conference" to follow and report back on, any team of whatever interest, could be a P5 or DII.  So, be thinking about it.  I may go Pac somebody, though we do have a Pac thread here which is nice.  Utee suggested Texas Tech.  WVU is a possibility.

Now thinking Iowa State, an almost Big Ten kind of team.

I follow teams from the Big 12 for obvious reasons

I used to follow Georgia Tech under Paul Johnson for the option offense

I already do this with multiple teams, much to the chagrin of others

This is a great idea. Come next August post this thread again and make a running list of who's assigned to which outsider team. Use thread throughout season to follow, report, and rage about the feckless coach. So many good story lines from around the nation. Will probably go SEC.

edit: Thinking about going with Texas or Texas A&M. Nothing is more entertaining than implosions and insurrections from entitled fan bases that I otherwise have no emotional stake in joining. After 7-5 seasons, both programs are at a bit of an earlier-than-expected crossroads with their coaches who year by year squander elite recruiting classes. The drama promises to be high.

I like the @ELA (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=55) idea of adopting an FCS team, but given the lack of games on TV and the low volume of coverage they're too hard to keep up with.

I've always thought about going all in on one of the local sub FBS teams, like Duquesne (FCS), Robert Morris (FCS), or one of the handful of even lower teams like California, Indiana, Seton Hill, Slippery Rock.  Like season tickets, following as much as possible online, the more I become disinterested in watching what is basically a lesser version of the NFL that FBS is.

I've always liked to pull for the little guy, the underdog, the near-hopeless.

So next year, I'm going to throw in my lot with the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Sure, they're a hard-luck bunch.  But maybe all they need is just a little support from a non-affiliated fan.

ROLL TIDE!

My Dad follows Ohio very closely,  listens to all the games and content.  I'm sure he's sent Solich and the program a few bucks.

I do pull for Iowa State,  no offense to our Hawkeye pals.  We always went to Nebraska at Iowa State games because it was closest.  I also have some ISU friends .

Great idea, I think I'll adopt TCU as my secondary team!

I did my master's online through Charlotte (still haven't ever been there in person), so I'd try to watch their games if they were ever televised. They had been pretty bad since starting their program until this year, finally making a bowl game, which I'll probably watch. In addition to being the newest FBS program, they also have the youngest head coach, who is apparently already getting considering for Missouri and Mississippi..... Maybe next year they'll be a CUSA contender....

I think it would be fun as more of a random assignment basis.  Maybe request a conference and be assigned a team.

Heh, this group doesn't much like assignments in my experience.  But, good idea.

I barely have enough time to follow Purdue.

Maybe if UCSB (my wife's alma mater) had a football team, I could do that, but they don't.

Interesting topic. I'd like to get in.

The news coverage issues with FCS and below teams is a real issue for reporting here. We have one area FCS team, UNI. We have local coverage of D-III teams, too. And, my daughter attends Clarke University, an NAIA college that started a football program this year.

In Iowa we have only two D-II teams of which I am aware, Morningside (Sioux City), and Upper Iowa (Fayette - a town of 1,427 - they must not count students), just 45 miles north of us.

I could take FSU, but I'd have to purchase a subscription to the Tallahassee Democrat to be fair. I only get to see FSU play in-person about once a decade, and Iowa about once a year.

What makes you happy you should do, but be considerate. I suggest you report on the Irish after they sign up for the Big Ten West.

Until then, they are the fainting Irish, to me. Irish faint to preserve tie (https://coachreese.wordpress.com/2014/09/30/the-fainting-irish/)

I'm not sure "we" need to provide excruciating minor details, just overviews that could be of interest to others who follow B1G teams.

FSU is an interesting case, a program with a storied somewhat recent past and in the dumps now.  I think I'm going to adopt UNC, not because they may be on an upswing but because the coaching change there is interesting, I think.

Heh, the guy that does the write ups for my neighborhood D3 team is the same guy that handles the PA system during the games. He also asks all the questions in their post game pressers, and probably wears several other hats within their AD. Real glue guy.

The defending national champions are going back to the NAIA national title game.

It came down to an All-American making a play against another All-American.

In what turned out to be a defensive slugfest, Morningside held Grand View’s offense in check in the second half, including forcing a fumble in the final seconds, allowing the Mustangs to win its NAIA semifinal game 21-16 over Grand View on Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium on Saturday.

Now Morningside gets to defend its national title against Marian, who won the national title against the Mustangs in 2012, on Dec. 21 in Grambling, Louisiana, at Eddie G. Robinson Stadium.

Grand View University is a private liberal arts university in Des Moines, Iowa. Founded in 1896 and affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the university enrolls approximately 2,000 students and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

I follow most of the B1G West, but I like following NIU. Maybe I'll adopt them next year.

Maybe.

Also like following the schools who offered me for grad school (other than UW).

Cornell, UC-Davis, NU, Auburn, aTm, Florida, PSU and Michigan (threw up in my mouth on that last one - well, not really, but maybe).

I used to follow Marshall pretty heavily when they were FBS and MAC. They had all these regional rivals and many of there games felt like big games back then. Now even though they are good C-USA its not the same. Why are they in a conference w/ Rice and Tulsa?

Now a few games into the season I usually just find a fun team and root for them. I want to root for Maryland, its just hard. I wish they kept Matt Canada.

Ok, hopefully someone remembers to bump this in August.  It would be fun for me to follow a non-Oregon P12 team.

While I don't think this should be prescriptive, I'm thinking we'd each provide a short outline of the team, like head coach, last four 247 recruiting rankings, maybe top 3-4-5 players of note, possible preseason ranking if any, aspirations ...

I for one don't care about the name of the 3rd string long snapper.
