As noted elsewhere, this is a sneaky good game on the docket. The Gophers are 5-0, yet I still feel that we don't know a thing about them.
For those planning to be in attendance, it's time to dig out the bad weather gear. The models keep printing out worse and worse solutions for Saturday. Right now it's rain/snow showers, temps in the mid 30s, and a stiff SW wind.
-
They should just cancel if it's that cold.

What's that called? The Broken Chair Trophy?
-
best trophy ever
-
The Gophers must have one helluva trophy case on hand in the event that they ever have all of those things in house simultaneously, but it has to sit mostly empty much of the time.
-
It would be interesting to see a breakdown of how many trophies the Gophers had in their possesion each season. Obviously if you go back far enough some of them begin to drop out of existence. And of course you'd have to factor in trophies that they'd have on hand for games that don't get played every year. So compiling such a list would be a bit of a chore.
-
Cancel? why?
There is no snowing in football. It's a rule.
-
Here's the whole story of the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy, the first and only college football trophy created entirely on the Internet and cranked up by Holder of the Year winner and slightly irreverent folk hero Peter Mortelli.
https://athlonsports.com/college-football/how-5-bits-broken-chair-trophy-affects-nebraska-football-and-minnesota-football
Unlike the other manufactured trophies created when Nebraska joined the league, this one was met with immediate acceptance from the fan bases.

I agree, this game is very interesting to me.
The Gophers are 5-0 and after this they travel to Rutgers then host Maryland. If they win this, they should get to 8-0. The Gophers are also just barely ranked in the coaches poll and barely unranked in the AP.
-
like last week for the Huskers, match up with a West team that is close in the power ranking
injury status for the Huskers will be huge - QB, WR, RB. Well RB is just suspended for a half.
I don't mind poor weather games, cheaper tickets, I have cold/wet weather gear. And yes, It's RED

The Matchup
Nebraska heads on the road for the second time in Big Ten Conference play this Saturday when Nebraska travels to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Game time from Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium is set for shortly after 6:30 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on FS1. The game can be heard on the Husker Sports Network from Learfield-IMG.
The contest is a key early-season matchup in the Big Ten West Division race, with both schools looking to establish themselves as division contenders as the 2019 season reaches the midway point.
Nebraska will bring a 4-2 record into the contest, including a 2-1 mark in Big Ten Conference play. The Huskers are coming off a dramatic 13-10 victory over Northwestern in Lincoln, winning the game on a field goal as time expired. The last-second victory over the Wildcats marked just the second time in Memorial Stadium history that Nebraska has secured a victory on a walk-off field goal.
Minnesota enters the game with a perfect 5-0 record, including a 2-0 mark in Big Ten Conference play. The Gophers are coming off a 40-17 victory over Illinois on Saturday in Minneapolis to keep their perfect start intact. Minnesota has relied on an explosive offense, averaging 410 total yards and 35.8 points per game. The Gophers have won their past seven games overall, including a win over Wisconsin in the 2018 regular-season finale and a victory in the Quick Lane Bowl. The Gophers are ranked No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and are just outside of the top 25 in the AP Poll.
Series History
Minnesota holds a 32-25-2 edge in the all-time series between the two schools, including a 22-13-2 advantage in games played in Minneapolis. The Huskers are 2-2 in four games at Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium.
Nebraska owns a 5-3 advantage over the Gophers since joining the Big Ten Conference, including last year's 53-28 win in Lincoln.
Nebraska has played Minnesota more than any other opponents with this Saturday marking the 60th all-time meeting. The schools met 51 times before Nebraska joined the Big Ten, including 19 straight seasons from 1934 to 1952. NU also played Minnesota eight straight years from 1967 to 1974.
Nebraska won 16 straight games in the series between 1963 and 2012, before a Minnesota victory in 2013. .
Minnesota a Memorable Matchup for Several Years
Nebraska defeated Minnesota 53-28 last season for the Huskers' first win of the season. Nebraska put up some noteworthy numbers in last year's meeting, and several current Huskers have enjoyed memorable matchups with Minnesota.
Nebraska put up 659 yards of total offense in last year's win over Minnesota, which at the time marked the Huskers' highest output ever in a Big Ten Conference game (NU broke the record with 674 yards of total offense at Illinois last month).
The Huskers scored 53 points last season against Minnesota, which marked the first time Nebraska had scored 50 points in a Big Ten Conference game.
Last year's 53-28 victory over Minnesota marked Scott Frost's first win as Nebraska's head coach

How many would have known that Minnesota holds a 32-25 edge in the all time series here?

Anyone who can remember the pre-helmet era of college football would know for sure.
-
I can't remember that era. Maybe because of not wearing a helmet.
I gather they played often "back in the day", eh?

Yeah, since 1900, with a ten game streak for the Gophers circa 1940.

Bobby Carpenter likened coaching Minnesota to playing Zelda, where you go around and try to collect all this little items and trinkets.

Karen Carpenter's brother?
-
Um... sure.

Glen Mason also said as much during his final year at the helm of the program. At the time he said that, his teams had won 2 trophy games in 8 years. This didn't help his case with the fanbase.

For those of us who are fans of teams who had the most success during the primordial ooze era of college football, we remember it.
Hell, it took almost 30 years for the Twin Cities media to get over 84-13 or whatever the final score was.

Has a team ever tried blitzing every down since that game?
-
it was worth a try
nothing else worked against that offense

This worked out well. Clown...

feel pretty bad for you and your obsession over PJ its probably not good for your health to be that angry that you have to post any negative thing you can think of about an opposing coach.
-
It's ELITE for my health. Don't feel bad for me.
-
he probably has low blood pressure and needs the help
Badge, you should drive over for the game. It's gonna be a party!

Just pile on when the Buckeyes take UW behind the woodshed :hee20hee20hee:

3rd party smack is weak and should never be used. Plus, the Goophs have the trophy right now (for another 51 days, that is). That pisses me off more than anything in college football.
-
Thought I'd help your low blood pressure and I haven't heard him say "row the boat" this week

yes every year I get a picture by the trophies and yes this year the Axe was a nice back drop
if it is 51 days or longer we treasure it much more than the Badgers do IMHO
-
Nah. Badger players and fans love that trophy more than anything else in the game, except Rose Bowl trips.
-
...and Brats/cheese curds
-
a fresh cheese curd is delectable.
-
So, this is a big game for Minnesota, eh? Win this and stay unblemished with a couple more winnable games upcoming. Then 3 of the last 4 look rough indeed, but they could be looking at a nice 9-3 season.

BIG TEN NETWORK preview
last time the Gophers started 6-0 was 2003
-
well most reasonable Gopher fans are still in the wait and see mode.
yes if we win this weekend they could beat the next two and be 8-0 and having PSU come into the Bank, but this year in particular I think the Gophers need to play one game at a time. the margin for error is too thin to count anything beyond the game they're playing.
Its going to be a cold and wet kind of day if its not raining it will be damp from rain and similar to Illinois it may not appear wet but it will be very tough conditions. I am not sure who that benefits as both teams can run the ball. The gophers do not rely on the shiftiness of the runners and getting a big dose of Smith, Brooks and Ibrahim with fresh legs and a big OL that is coming together will be interesting
And for 847 I think PJ and Frost should have a 100 yard dash instead of a coin flip. 847 loves when PJ runs between quarters!
-
Has there ever been a year where a team played them two at a time?
-
Has there ever been a year where a team played them two at a time?
i know there have been years that OSU could have used their 3rd string to beat Brewster and his squad while his 1&2 team could have played against another team
-
It would be sort of interesting for a team to split up squads and play two different teams at the same time.
-
like MLB spring training?

I remember JoePa running between quarters
-
PJ did run a 4.5 at the combine in 2004
probably still proud of himself

>> No, Nebraska did not dump ice down players backs or submerge footballs in freezing cold water to prepare for potentially-snowy weather Saturday.
“We’re not doing any of that,” Frost said sharply.
Minnesota has. But Frost said football in 32-degree weather is “beautiful” as long as wind and rain doesn’t get involved. Offensive coordinator Troy Walters, who played in a few snow-filled AFC Championship games when he was with the Colts in the NFL, said Wednesday players don’t even feel the cold when they’re on the field.
It’s also hard to prepare for snow when you have no snow around you.
“We’ve just got to play well,” Frost said when asked about conditions and road mentalities and things of that ilk. “It’s less about all those other things than it is just making sure we execute and do the things we’re supposed to.”
Frost said the weather will be the biggest factor in the game, but the Huskers are “prepared for whatever the environment is.”
-
Is Martinez going to play, or will PJ Barnum have to prepare for UNL's 2nd #1 QB?
-
We know Martinez is making trip, we don't know, or more specifically, there have been no credible reports on who will be playing at QB. If I put my Stratego hat on, I'd bet Vedral is starting.
Same thing w/ Spielman, and who the heck knows what's going on with PK.(https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTpZ0PLPQLZruEGAdiLibwgNmQ8bNSaEl22GdMIFUOIuWfwWctBEA)
-
Frost doesn't disclose those things, but all Husker QBs on the roster are runners and passers
the offense won't change much
-
Well, I'm off to see the Gophers!
Weather is looking up, high of 40 tomorrow
FOOTBALL WEATHER!!!
wish me luck, gopher hunting should be good!
-
GO BIG RED!!!
-
High of 40°F, YIKES.
I'd be freezing.
It was cool here yesterday, barely hit 70°F.
-
GO BIG RED!!!
Take it to the Wisconsin/MSU thread.
-
Looks like a good chance of snow Saturday AM and then diminishing rain-snow mix in the afternoon with slight chance of snow during the game. Fun to watch on TV.
Huskers don't like cold and snow...it kills off their food supply.
-
First snow showers of the season were spotted this morning in St. Paul...
-
i suspect being a night game the 2nd half will be a cold one.
do we still give the visitors heaters or do they have to bring their own?
-
Last year's Illinois game in Lincoln was at 23 degrees ( I was there), coldest Nebraska game since 1993.
vs Iowa in 2015 was 24 degrees. I agree with Frost, the cold is never the issue, its when it is wet, that it is nasty. Cold windy rain is the worst combination of all. I recall playing a JV game in high school, early 3rd quarter, kid takes an option pitch gets tackled into the sideline, breaks his tailbone or something. Long injury delay The refs, the coaches say, ah, that's it, game's over. Why? It was drizzly 35 degrees, and windy as all get out. It was horrible. I was long snapper, I just lobbed it back to the punter between my legs, no way to get any spin on it. We got it off all right.
-
I have cold/wet weather gear. And yes, It's RED
