We're BAAAAAAAACK!
The 2019 Resident Genius contest is under way again, and is open to all comers.
For those of you just tuning in, the rules of this game are as follows:
-There are many measurables in a football game. Some of them appear in a box score. Your task is to guess one of them as accurately as possible. I decide what you will be guessing every week. I can and will choose from any and all quantities that appear in said box score.
-The guesses will be sorted by their distance from the correct guess, and ranked. By and large, your weekly score will be your ranking, with a few exceptions outlined below.
-If a guess wins outright, that person gets a score of -5.
-Ties are handled as follows: If there are three entries tied for 3rd, all involved in the tie get 3. The next placing gets a score of 6. If there is a tie for the win, each gets a score of 1.
-Lowest score at the end of the season will be declared the 2019 Resident Genius.
The 2019 campaign begins in Ann Arbor, where Michigan is looking to start off a big campaign to drag the program out of the mud. They start with turning the lights on for a game vs. a tomato can disguised as Middle Tennessee. I thought the lights only came on at the Big House for a big game?
QB Shea Patterson is arguably the key to the whole proceedings for the Wolverines.
Q: How many yards of total offense will Michigan QB Shea Patterson have vs. MTSU?
Deadline for picks is Saturday, August 31 at 6:30 PM CDT. Good hunting.

You left out from our World Headquarters in St Paul/Minny.And I still owe you a Natty Lite Tall Boy - hope you don't hold that against me when tabulating the numbers like the last couple of seasons ;D

Oh, and the Resident Genius World Headquarters has moved yet again. After a 3 year stay in Med City USA, it's now back in the greatest Twin Cities in the world.

I expect the backups and the rest of the team to get at least as many snaps as the starters in this one.

Med City USA is Rochester, MN, home of the almost-world-famous Mayo Clinic. It's interesting living in a company town when you don't work for the company.

it's famous in Iowa

How many yards of total offense will Michigan QB Shea Patterson have vs. MTSU?
Does this mean only Pattersons rushing yards and his passing yards
or does it mean the teams total offense while Patterson is at QB
sorry if this is a stupid question

Patterson's combined rushing and passing yards, as it appears in the boxscore in the Sunday fishwrap.

This one is tough, how much does he actually play? Not even purely talking taking him out for garbage time, but I'm assuming McCaffrey steals plenty of meaningful snaps too.

I think they pound the ground game and maybe switch him out by the 4th quarter. Gimme 238.

True, though if the offense practices much tempo, there should be a few more drives.
-
I'll be the wacky one and say 325.
Though it isn't part of the game, I bet 75 of these are on the ground. I bet McCaffery gets 3 drives.

when's the last time a Michigan QB NOT named Robinson got 75 on the ground?

I think it was back in 2018. I think it was Shea Patterson. 90 on the ground versus Wisconsin.😉
I haven't done this next math but it feels plausible: Though Dylan McCaffery didn't get there in any one game last year, if you extrapolate his scattered snaps into full games, he might average more than 75 per game. Of all the teams WBs, he has the most obvious share of McCaffery in him.

the younger brother McCaffery at UNL has shown some speed with his feet
I'm glad he's #3 on the depth chart - using that redshirt to mature
