Right or wrong, Nirvana is credited with shoving hair metal off the cliff and ushering in not only a totally different sound to R&R, but ostensibly communicating a point of view through the music which wasn't, to that point, being heard within the mainstream.
I do believe Cobain's suicide has inflated its specific impact and influence but good luck fighting that fight. Having said that, Butch Vig is a great producer period.
