Title: 2019 OT Tourney
Post by: ELA on June 30, 2019, 04:34:34 PM
Best rock(ish) albums

Use whatever criteria you want, personal favorite, most culturally significant, etc...

List was made from a composite of six album rankings, so don't blame me that Apostrophe didn't make it.  (first to pick up on that gets a gold star)

Starts tomorrow.

As a general matter,  that is always the case.   I am fond of the record for a variety of reasons, but people do get carried away with it.

That album came out when I was in sixth grade, and he died when I was in 8th grade. So their hay day coincided exactly with my Middle School experience, which would place me right square in their target audience.

Weird Al is the one that hipped us to that shit in 6th grade when he parodied that song, and is consequently quite responsible for the emergence of grunge as the go to genre of music amongst young teens in the 90s.

Did you limit it to one album per band out of curiosity?

Of the albums that ended up making the tourney what would everyones Final Four have looked like.

50/60's - Led Zep. None of the 50/60's jump out to me but this is easily the best of the options

70's - Rumors. For me I think its this vs Dark Side. The problem I have is Dark Side is not my favorite Floyd album I like Wish You Were Here and Animals more. I think Dark Side is just a touch overrated so Id go with Fleetwoods best album over my 3rd or 4th Floyd album

80's - London Calling.  License To Ill is the other album I really enjoy from the 80's selections. London Calling for me is one of my top 5-10 of all time though. The best album by the best classic punk band of all time IMO makes this one had to beat.

90's(Because thats all it was) - OK Computer. Another runaway for me. Radiohead are one of if not thee most influential band of the past 25 years and OK Computer is where they took it to another level. The 1-2 of this and Kid A shaped a lot of bands/artist that came after these.

Finals Rumors>Led Zep and London Calling>OK Computer(By the tinest bit London Calling takes this based on just being something that I listen to on the regular. Both these Albums could be top 10 all time for a combo of talent/influnce/personally listening to it a tad more.

London Calling>Rumors. I like rumors a lot but I dont think it can compete with London Calling IMO.

Bummed that the Prog Rock was not able to crack the list as much in the 70/80. No Queen(Queen 2, A Night At The Opera), No Rush(Moving Pictures, Hemispheres , and Yes's Close To The Edge are some of the bands/albums that really jump out from that era to me.

Then the 2000's and on getting completely shut out was rough. Radiohead - Kid A, Arcade Fire - Funeral, The Strokes - Is This It? all amazing album with ver high acclaim from the 2000's that didnt have a shot.

For the 70's some Lynyrd Skynyrd would have been a nice option, preferably Second Helping. Great album.

Agreed, although I prefer their debut, overplayed Free Bird and all.  Tuesday's Gone is probably my favorite song of theirs.

Was thinking about the opposite of this, who, of the album driven Rock era would do disproportionately well based just off hit singles.

Like if you played just a 12 track Best of album to someone who had never heard of them, and then asked them to rank them, who would be way to high or way too low, based on their biggest hits.  Aerosmith comes to mind.  They have like 6-8 great songs, and then just albums and albums of dog crap.  But their best half dozen songs hold up against just about anyone.

I think the Beatles are possibly harmed the most.  They have a catalog deeper than anyone, but I rarely long to hear one of their songs.  I know I bought 1 when it came out, the compelation of all of their #1 hits.  I could do without it.

Outside of Thiller, Michael Jackson would be a really great collection of singles (which I own), but the balance of most of those albums are average or even bad.  My opinion only, of course.
