Teams I like to watch on TV
« on: August 02, 2017, 08:29:17 AM »
I imagine nearly all of us watch a lot of CFB on Saturdays, some of which may involve games where we don't care who wins much.  I rather enjoy those games.  I can pay attention to "details" and try and learn what is going on better than if my team is playing, or even if two adversaries are paired off and I have a dog in the fight.

I personally am not crazy about wide open offenses, at least not for long.  But there are some teams I enjoy watching, mostly because they do more with less and are tough teams, or I admire their coach, or something.

Kansas State - great coach, clean program
Michigan State - usually a bit down on talent but Dantonio makes the most of it
Wisconsin - old style trenches football with deception and passing thrown in
Northwestern - kind of like Vandy, but better, and often a very tough out even for top teams
Stanford - kind of like Wisconsin in a way, but somehow found some talent lately
Memphis - a non-P5 team that can play like one

If K State is playing say Iowa State, I'd guess few of us cares who wins, but it's a chance to watch football and not get hyperventilated.

I can tell you quickly who I don't like watching: 1) Boise St's Blue Turf 2) Oregon's surprise Uniforms. 3) Notre Dame's entitlement.

I think I go out of my way to find Nebraska and Virginia Tech games on the tele, so I will say those 2. And with the BTN I see myself looking forward to watching alot of those games.

For me it's mostly just the teams that are my secondary rooting interests beyond my own school.  So:

Michigan
Stanford
Air Force

I also watch the Aggies fairly often because of my wife.

Comes down to styles for me, so it has more to do with coaching than teams per se.

I will say, I find myself drawn to watching games on real grass, so I'll find myself watching disproportionate Colorado, Penn State, Iowa State (weird right?), Northwestern and Virginia Tech home games for that

I'll watch all of the Big Ten games that I can and I've always liked SEC football because it's similar to the Big Ten. Good line play makes me happy.

I definitely get attracted to games (stadiums) that look good visually on the Tele.

ex.  LSU Tiger Stadium.  For whatever reason, those colors just look so great on TV, especially against the grass, the five yard line numbers,  and of course the usually raucous night crowd.
put that same team in the Superdome, and its depressing.   Every sports photographer will say the worst stadium to shoot in is the Superdome.

another one that comes to mind,  USC.   I like the low pitch on the camera angle (vs the old Ohio State angle), but night games at the Coliseum makes you think you are watching in standard def.  The lighting isn't doing any favors for TV.  Kind of like night games at Wrigley.  The back light is non-existent (no light standards in the outfield), it just looks bad on TV.

For whatever reason I really liked the dingyness of the old Orange Bowl, both on TV, and in person.  I realize that's a double standard.

I loathe the Orange Bowl, just terrible.

I like watching USC-UCLA on TV, when they both wear their home unis.  That game looks better in the Rose Bowl than in the Coliseum though, JMO.

Like to watch any close contest doesn't have to be helmets locking horns. The more defense the better, not fond of 45-40 endings unless it's double OT
Suburbia:Where they tear out the trees & then name streets after them.

LSU (and PSU) games on the Tele are pretty exciting because of the fans in the stadium. Yah I like those as well.

The Rose is a special place to watch a game.

The teams I like to watch ... and actually root for (NOTE: during B1G contests, I'm obviously hoping for the outcome that'll benefit the 'Cats)

- all of the Big Ten games

- Duke, Stanford, Vandy and Rice (I like nerds)

- Georgia Tech

- Kansas State

- TCU

- Oregon

- Utah

- Alabama (this might seem like a weird one but I admire consistent excellence [same reason I like Ohio State] ... plus it's more satisfying when they're ranked hella high only to lose on the biggest stage)

- Georgia

- BYU

- Navy

- Northern Illinois

- Air Force

- Boise State (although that blue turf is admittedly annoying)

- Hawaii

- Fresno State

- bonus ... North Dakota State

Teams I like to watch .... so I can actively root AGAINST them

- Florida State

- Baylor

- Notre Dame

- USC
