Formatting issues with line feeds in quick reply...
« on: November 30, 2017, 03:04:39 PM »
I've noticed when I use the quick reply box, hitting "enter" twice at the end of a paragraph to leave a blank space between two paragraphs doesn't work. When I post, it puts the next paragraph on the line immediately following the previous paragraph.

When I use the full reply box, it works fine. The paragraphs have one blank line in between them, exactly how it looks in the compose window.

In fact, if I hit "enter" multiple times (as above) to create extra room between paragraphs, even that works. But hitting "enter" to leave two empty lines between paragraphs doesn't even leave a single empty line when I do it in the quick reply box.

Is there a problem in the code for the quick reply where it removes multiple line feeds?

And now using the quick reply box. This is paragraph 1. I will hit Enter twice to leave a blank line.

This is paragraph two. There should be a blank line above, but probably is not. Now I will hit Enter 5 times.

This is paragraph three. There should be 4 blank lines above, but there probably are not.

Okay, trying again after quoting someone. Hitting enter twice.
Paragraph two. There should be a blank line above. Hitting enter 5 times.
Paragraph three. There should be 4 blank lines above.

Ahh, there we go. The behavior only appears when it follows a quote.

Drew, any ideas?

you must have caught me in the middle of trying to 'fix' this issue.  I've added a script that will place a space between ANY line break, which should remedy the 'crammed' paragraphs from here out...

hold shift hit refresh (or f5)... the script may be cached on your machine, and this will clear it for a fresh copy of the updates.

the multiple lines the machine is stripping- on purpose.  i sacrificed the intentional spaces for two reasons:
1) formatting consistency
2) keeping thread height under control... i set it to 30 posts, but it can be sizable in height depending on how long some posts are.

^that last post...

I didn't 'force' a blank line between the first and second.  just one 'enter'.
between the second and third, i DID force a blank line.
they rendered the same, which is what i was aiming for.
between the third and fourth? I put in four blank lines.... and it only rendered the one.

Okay, thanks! Sounds like you were already working on it...

I was just getting bothered by it as I tend to be verbose, and when I carefully write a 4- or 5-paragraph post, it very quickly becomes "wall of text" if the paragraph spacing isn't there.

hold shift hit refresh?

that should dump the old rules for the new- which makes formatting SO much easier.

Ah, I mentioned this elsewhere, didn't realize it was already discussed here.

Before, if you went back and edited the post, the added spaces stuck.

With the new formatting, there's no way to not have the extra space, which is fine for multi-paragrpah posts, but for lists and other types of posts, it doesn't work so well (see the All-Big Ten team voting threads for example).

Any way to add a workaround for that?

Thanks!

alright... tested it..

when making a list, simply type it out with a space in between s required- then highlight it when you're done and put it in an 'ordered list' (meaning numbered or lettered) or an unordered list (meaning bullets)- and you can space them however you like... basically, this is how MSWord works, so it should be somewhat familiar?

give it a shot and holler back if it doesn't work the way you want it to.

But there is no way to do it without numbers or bullets?  At least as far as I can tell

I think doing a table, might be the closest thing to a workaround.  Actually for the one thing I was trying to do, a table is the best solution.  Funny, I was trying to find a workaround to do it the old mediocre way I did on the old site, and that option here didn't even cross my mind, is FAR superior
