Title: B1G Women's Volleyball 2018
Post by: MarqHusker on July 18, 2018, 11:24:19 PM
The final school (Illinois) finally released its schedule this week.  I'll post OOC matches later.  This is a home/road grid for conference matches.  As usual, unbalanced, and each school has a travel partner.  Most matches are back to back, except for a handful weeknight matches.  hat tip to huskergeek.  Road Team on Y axis, Home Team on the X axis.

Assuming you haven't been paying attention to the offseason.  Maryland's coach (Steve Aird) bolted for Indiana, and Maryland promoted an assistant (Adam Hughes) to the top job.   IU moves into a new Volleyball/Wrestling facility (and plays all road OOC to ensure its ready). The UW Fieldhouse will open up the upper deck again, yeah!  A fair number of transfers (Lexi Sun to Nebraska from UT), and lots of turnover. Media days are in a few weeks.   I'm guessing the media projected Top 3 will be Nebraska/Minnesota/UW.  PSU and Illinois in the 2nd tier, and then Purdue/MSU/Mich/Ohio St.  Rutgers is bringing in 4 international players.  Gotta try something.

The 2018 Red/White Scrimmage is only one month away! The first look at the defending champs is set for August 18 at 3 p.m.

Arrive early as the 2017 National Championship banner will be unveiled prior to the match! Stick around after the game to get the first look at the new, never before seen NET documentary "Nebraska Volleyball: Culture of a Champion". The film captures the drama of the 2017 national championship season and the history of the rivalry between two powerhouse programs – Penn State and Nebraska.

Non Conference Schedules for the B1G.  Lots of 3 and 4 team mini-events at various locales, lots of day night DHs.  These are often carefully curated to boost RPI.  Great thing about Women's Vball, the helmets don't  duck each other, and even though there are some neutral site games on a campus site, some of these 4 team challenges, rotate to each school over time.  B1G/Pac series, VERT sponsors a big one, ACC/B1G.

That's really just a football problem.  All the top schools play each other in all of the tournament sports.  MSU in basketball this year is playing Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina, Louisville and Florida.  All by December 8.

The VT board is the vball equivalent of this board, smarter than the coaches/media.  ;)  They now put forth a poll of a committee of posters from around the country.   Just as good as any, IMO.

They were co-ACC champs last year, and return everybody that matters.  Back row was really weak the one match I saw of them last year.  They are the media favorite this year (mildly) over Louisville, FSU, ND.  UNC and Duke should bounce back.   Their coach is highly regarded.   I'd expect Louisville to start owning this league before too long.

I have to imagine Volleyball is miles off the radar outside of Happy Valley in Pennsylvania.   A testament to Russ Rose's genius.  The 'east coast' and I know Pittsburgh isn't viewed as 'east coast'  is pretty much a wasteland for the game.  For whatever reason, the fertile ground of HS and Club talent in OH, IN, KY, pretty much stops to the east.

Consequently, I find this poll to have a lot more credibility with regards to where the Big Ten teams stack up in the National rankings.

IIRC MSU relied heavily on seniors last year.  I'd expect a drop.  I also think the Nassar scandal is going to really hit the women's sports hard in recruiting going forward

They did lose of ton of key players to graduation, most of their elite servers and offense.  They still have good material, but agree, they will fall back a bit this year.  That will be interesting to follow (recruiting for MSU in women's sports).  They have a good history in volleyball, pretty solid support from the school and fans, but the B1G is no joke. No margin for error.

I'll take this moment, once again, to mention how much I love that college volleyball is structured so the top intersectional teams can play each other in early season OOC, and not completely destroy their chances at post-season play later in the year.

This season in the OOC, Texas will play:

Oregon (in Lincoln)
Florida (in Lincoln)
Wisconsin (in Madison)
Kentucky (in Austin)
Stanford (in Palo Alto)
Stanford (in Austin)

UNL looked lost at times this past weekend.   Last year, the teams started in a similar fashion.   Cook will play around with rotations, and the freshman will settle into their roles.   I don't believe UNL is the #2 team in the country, but they'll make noise in the BIG.

You don't go from one of the best setters in husker history to a freshman without some bumps.

Likewise, around here we hardly knew that college volleyball existed...

Lexi Sun has a back injury, Cook plans to keep her out of matches for awhile.  They need another pin, and hopefully Sun is that pin.  This will be a fun season to follow, to watch all these newcomers.   Nov/Dec Nebraska will look much different.   Preseason rankings have as much to do with being a vball 'helmet' than anything else.

that's why I was asking.  Foecke really struggled vs Florida.  Could have used another swinging arm.

I guess that is good news.  Expecting her in the lineup soon.

USC takes out Florida in Gainesville in 4 sets tonight.  Bob Lanier's daughter is a very talented player for USC.    The other big match this weekend is UT at UW Sat night on BTN.

BYU takes down #1 Stanford in Provo in 5.  Some interesting calls down the stretch benefit BYU which is legit top 5.

Ill beat CU in 1st Big v Pac match.  Iowa early lead on Wash.

UNC is a program that is trying hard to succeed at vball.   They had some 'ups' and then they suffered a lot substantial injuries last year, and have had a lot of roster turnover.   They will be better down the road then they are right now.    They hung around with Minnesota last week for a little bit.

Yeah, my unscientific data suggested it's a school that should be good, but I don't recall ever seeing their name deep in the tourney.

I had to check,  UNC did get to an elite 8 this decade as well as a couple sweet 16s.  They tend to play to their seed/unseed as it seems.  Keep in mind, the ACC rarely sniffs a FF (Fla St.  in 2011 was the only appearance).  As many as the Sun Belt (UT Arlington)

Early season trivia: FF appearances (counting current members, thus no separate Big 8/XII etc)
Pac 12: 51 (Stan 21, UCLA 12, USC 10, UW 4, Cal 2, AZ 1, UO 1)
BIG: 41 (N 14, PSU 13, Minn 5, Ill 3, OSU 2, UW 2, MSU 1, Mich 1)
Big West: 17 (Hawaii 9, LBSU 8)
XII: 13 (UT 12, KU 1)
SEC: 11 (Fla 8, LSU 2, Tenn 1)
West Coast: 10 (Pacific 7, BYU 2, Santa Clara 1)
MTN West: 3 (SDSU 2, SJSU 1)
Sun Belt: 1 (UT-Arlington)
ACC: 1 (FSU)

some good matches

Creighton will be pumped up for a shot at the Huskers tonight

The No. 7 Nebraska volleyball team makes its only non-conference road trip of the season this week when it makes the short drive up to Omaha to play the No. 14 Creighton Bluejays on Thursday at 7 p.m. at CHI Health Center Omaha. The Huskers will then return home to host Iowa State on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Both Husker matches this week will be televised. The Nebraska-Creighton match will be on NET-1 and will have a free live stream at NETNebraska.org.  The Huskers’ match against Iowa State will be televised on ESPNU and can also be viewed at WatchESPN.com.

#7 N at #14 Creighton in Omaha tonight was a dandy.  Creighton has never defeated Nebraska, and things look good for the BlueJays, pretty convincing 2-0 lead, but Nebraska pulled it out in 5 sets (15-10 5th).  14,000+ on hand. Looked about 50/50.  BTW, why is NET streaming always flawless, while BTN plus is always a clunky, latent riddled POS?

Nice docket of matches tonight (a few on TV).
#1 Minnesota goes down to #18UO (at Stanford)
#2 Wisconsin goes down in 4 at #15Baylor
Penn St at Stanford about to start on Pac12 Net.
#25 Marq beat #10 USC
BYU handled USC earlier.
Ill winning two matches today vs HO league participants.

BYU could very well be #1 next week.    Penn St the only other undefeated top 10 team at the moment.
ELA's Pitt Watch:   Handled a pretty decent Dayton squad in 4 sets, including the 25-7 4th.

Stanford swept Penn St.   PSU another team with 8 new kids.  They have two really good middles,  setter seemed to struggle. Stanford as noted, keeps up the schedule grind with H/H w UT.   Stanford playing BYU, PSU, Minnesota and UT twice over two weeks.

Pitt sweeps #12 Washington.   Pitt gonna be top 10.
A school called UTRGV beat #15 Baylor in five sets.  Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros that is.  Baylor partied too much at George's last night after taking down Wisconsin.
Marquette gave BYU a run, but was out of gas, losing in 4 sets.  BYU will likely be #1, and they could run the table now in the reg season.
Penn St bounced back beating Oregon.
Minn at Stanford on Sunday.

LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 7 Nebraska volleyball team swept Iowa State, 25-22, 25-18, 25-16, in front of a crowd of 8,108 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Sunday afternoon. The Husker volleyball program also retired the jersey of Sarah Pavan, one of the most decorated student-athletes in NCAA history, after the match. A four-time AVCA All-American and a two-time Academic All-American of the Year, Pavan became the ninth Husker in school history to have her jersey retired.

Through Sundays matches.   Of course this doesn't say who beat who, etc.   BYU will likely be #1 this week.  Stanford #2 I'm guessing.   I've now finally watched all the 'top' teams sans Illnois and Michigan, cuz Michigan has so much money they are too busy counting to figure out how to stream a match.  They are an outlier in that regard.  Low brow.    I think the B1G is anybody's guess.
Of note: Michigan has yet to drop a set.  Colo. St. is their best win.  MSU dropped the opener at Tenn.   Ohio St. lost at Ole Miss. PSU and Minn lost at Stanford,  Oregon also clipped the Gophers.  Fla. took out Nebraska in Lincoln.  Badgers lost at Baylor.  Rutgers running out of chances to get to 8 wins.

StandingsOverall
Michigan9-0
Illinois8-0
Purdue8-0
Michigan State9-1
Ohio State8-1
Nebraska6-1
Penn State6-1
Wisconsin5-1
Maryland7-2

Not to sound like a resident homer for the State of Indiana, but I could make it case for it being a much better gig than Maryland for volleyball.  IU is about to (in a week or so) open a brand new volleyball/wrestling facility, they likely threw decent $$ at Steve Aird ($231,000 vs $172,000 at Maryland), that's top 20 money overall, and probably 6th highest in the B1G, who is viewed as a rising star coaching/recruiting status.  B1G pays more for than any other league for vball HCs.   He signed a nice class for Maryland last year.  He's got a good coaching pedigree (assistant under Russ Rose), played at Penn St.   The State produces great volleyball talent, one of the best club scenes around (Munciana).

This data is a little old (2016-17) Base Salary, we all know there may be other forms of comp.
John Cook, Nebraska $600,000  (I know he also has a NC bonus of 20%)
Geoff Carlson, tOSU, 303,000
Chris Tamas, Illinois, 300,000
Kelly Sheffield, Wis, $298,000
Russ Rose Penn State (not known, must be in this higher range)
Dave Shondell, Purdue, $232,000
Hugh McCutcheon, Minn $156,000 (he is believed to receive over $400k)
Mark Rosen, Mich  $164,000
Cathy George, MSU $176,000

Rutgers coach was paid $95,000

Stanford at UT hook up twice this week, first at Palo Alto Tuesday and then in Austin this weekend. UW at Marquette.

B1G results from the weekend.   Michigan dropped a set, but still perfect record, beating CSU and ND twice.  Purdue won 3 matches down in Alabama, including over Bama.   Illinois handled Creighton is also still perfect.   K-State at Minnesota was postponed, as high temps (90s) made it unbearable I guess at the Pav (without A/C).  Things get busy in the B1G now starting Wed  (PSU at Minn,  tOSU at UW, and I guess Rutgers has to play Maryland so why not right away).  IU with a  9-2 start, all road/neutral matches.

Michigan has a very nice team.  It got really ugly for Mich in that 4th, but they are going to be a problem for everybody.  Skojdt is an elite talent. Indy product.   Nebraska service errors will be their undoing at this rate.  In a tight match they won't recover.  Sun looked good tonight as did Foecke.

IU impressive tonight in a 4 set win at Ohio State.  25-9 in the 4th.  Has IU ever held a non Rutgers B!G opp. to less than 10?   PSU hangover real.  First time watching IU, this team looks like they are going to compete this season.

Minnesota continued their dominance over UW, sweeping in Minneapolis tonight on BTN.  I think that's 7 in a row in the series.  Purdue won in 4 at Maryland.

Nebraska middle blocker Lauren Stivrins was honored as the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Huskers to a pair of road victories over the weekend.

Stivrins picked up her first-career Big Ten weekly honor after becoming the third Husker in school history to post a 1.000 hitting percentage with at least 10 kills when she went 10-for-10 in a sweep of Northwestern last Friday. She followed the next night with eight kills, four blocks and three service aces in a 3-1 win at previously unbeaten No. 7 Illinois. The sophomore from Scottsdale, Arizona averaged 2.57 kills per set on .536 hitting for the weekend.

Nebraska hosts Iowa on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The match will be televised on BTN, streamed at BTN2GO.com and can be heard on Husker Sports Network radio affiliates, Huskers.com and the official Huskers app.

Nebraska continues to drop a set nearly every match.   The Fr. setter had a rough S2, but the passing wasn't exactly crisp either.   Middles weren't a factor on offense.  Can't beat Minnesota this weekend with that imbalance.

If memory serves, I don't think Nebraska had dropped a set to Iowa either ever, or for at least 25 meetings.   It seems like this is the year either Iowa, Indiana, or Maryland could break into the top 8 for once.  Its been a stranglehold of N/PSU/Minn/UW/Ill/Pur/MSU/UM/tOSU for the past 6/7 years.

Big10 West is very very good in volleyball.

Illinios lost control of Wisconsin in the second set.  When wisky went on a 13-4 run, you could just see the shift in confidence and, imo, it carried over into sets 3 and 4.   It was a good match to watch as an impartial observer.

AVCA Top 25 after this weekend.  I didn't see more than maybe two points the entire weekend, trip to Texas kept me away.   Minnesota with a big 4 set win in Lincoln.   Iowa upset Wisconsin in 5 sets.   Speculation will begin to brew around who the 4th regional host will be.   If form holds, I suspect it will likely be Pac12 Champ, B1G Champ, Texas and ???  My money is on BYU if the win out.  I'm not sure Pittsburgh will get the love if they run the table, though their RPI right now is 4, and Illinois is 3rd, Stanford 1st, BYU 2nd,  fwiw.

When I read this thread I empathize with all those girlfriends out there trying to understand football for the first time.  I played volleyball in gym class, I guess.

Cool sport, though.  One thing I still don't follow is how players almost grab the ball over their head and toss it back up.  Aren't you supposed to hit it, not catch it?  See, told you I know nothing about it...

The art of setting.  It's a very challenging skill, not to mention avoiding 'double contact'.  You're never catching the ball, you're making a single contact on the ball with your fingers in an effort to direct the ball (usually w/o spin) to a designated location for your teammates to attack over the net, all while reading the defensive block on the other side of the net.    I refuse to even introduce it to the kids on my team (8 & 9yr olds).   Until they can pass the ball in a controlled fashion, I don't need them trying to set a volleyball.     Having a good setter though is the difference between elite and simply very good.   You're the QB of the court.

Through today.  Nebraska had chances to take down Penn State for the 8th consecutive time, but it wasn't meant to be, and was handled in the 5th set.  Illinois avenged a home loss to UW and returned the favor in Madison on Saturday.  Michigan with Skojdt putting up big #s now in a tie for 2nd place.  Minnesota really looking good.  Great setter, fast offense,  elite Pins, impact Freshman.   btw: Final Four is in Minneapolis.  BYU and  Pitt still undefeated (will play a good Louisville team this weekend).

Their RPI isn't good, about 80.  They need to get to 10 conference wins.  20 conf matches total.  Any ncaa bid will need 10 conf. Wins.  Schedule is home heavy as it relates to upper tier the rest of the way.

They lost so much offense.  They do have a really good freshman.

That was a strange match.   I had one eye on it with my 3 TVs.   Minnesota overcame some dreadful serving, and after tonight, no doubt, the best freshman out there with Rollins.   Nebraska looked gassed, Again having legit chances to close out sets, but didn't.   The Fr. setter will be a very good setter, but she's no Kelli Hunter at this stage.     @PSU, @UW, @Minn.  First three match losing streak since 1997 for Nebraska.    Minnesota is the class of the league at this point.

Pitt watch: beat ND Friday (really nice crowd at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House),  face their toughest match in conference with #21Louisville on Sunday.   I've read Pitt has secured access to Petersen Events in the event they host a regional.

Nebraska's playing to my expectations.   They are about the only ones in the league who have competed with Minnesota thus far, win some and lose some with the teams at the top.  If they start dropping matches to the bottom tier, I'd be concerned.  I know it isn't breaking news, but the teams with the experienced setters are at the top.

The Gophers are curb stomping their way to the B1G crown (it appears).  Remaining seven matches of note, they host Purdue and do travel to Penn State, otherwise, they have taken out everybody else, dropping only 3 sets in conference this year.   The offense is a machine, so many weapons, and a great setter.   Rutgers about to enter a season ending gauntlet against top foes, with at NW and hosting MSU in the middle to provide some chance at a first conference win in a few seasons.

Michigan is in a funk (lots of sick players apparently).  They lost at IU this week, which is quietly moving to the NCAA bubble.   Must see TV,  PSU at Nebraska Friday night.

Pitt watch:  they did lose their first match of the season against Duke, so unlikely to host a regional at this point.  BYU and Stanford continue as 1 and 2 respectively.

Not many matches last 3 hours in rally scoring, but Nebraska and Penn State manage to do it more than a few times, it seems.   It wasn't necessarily crisp volleyball, but it was a fantastic match to watch.   They are responsible for some of the greatest volleyball matches every played in NCAA (2008 final the GOAT).   Nebraska's D is such a strength,  what they could do with a better offense right now.  They tallied 20 blocks and 104 digs, which I'm fairly certain is a school record, and probably one of the highest dig totals in NCAA history.  Foceke (an OH!) had 29 digs.  Offensively,  geez,  they gagged set one losing 4 set points, and were really careless in sets they won on set point.   Really having a hard time finishing.  Glad to see Lexi Sun bounce back from a terrible 1st/2nd sets.

side note:  Stanford escaped in 5 at Colorado, and BYU held off San Diego.

Okay, so that's the extent of what I "know" about her. But compared to most Big Ten VB fans, I'd say that's pretty good.

Kind of funny that she wound up at the top "program" out of the five.

.

There was a second club player added to the roster, but she's already in a walking boot. So that barely counts.

But yeah, OSU was rotating a setter and a DS in as front row hitters.

Christened.

She found her way onto the court vs Sparty, and posted her first trillion (a 1 for "sets played" followed by a bunch of goose eggs).

Hey and MSU picked up the win in a matchup of programs way down on their luck this year.

During the MSU-Purdue broadcast they did say MSU is the youngest team in the Big Ten and one of the youngest in the country, so at least there's that.

OSU is holding senior night on Saturday, even though there's two more home games the following weekend.

Bold strategy. Act like it's the last home game of the season against Maryland, and then maybe nobody will come out and watch them get fed through the woodchipper vs Wisconsin and Minnesota.

A valiant effort on senior night in the first two sets, but came up short and were run off the court in the third.

Two of the seniors honored didn't even play this year, retiring early due to injury. A third played the year hobbled, confined to the back row after spending most of her career up front. The fourth transferred in this year, and missed a pretty good stretch.

Kirch posted another trillion.

Standings through Sunday.   Minnesota closes with 4 on the road @ M'land, OSU, PSU and Rutger.
Illinois is @NW, @RU, @MSU, home vs Purdue.   I still think Illinois has the edge to get that top 4 seed, USC/Texas are the remaining contenders.   Maryland needs to grind out two more wins IMO.  BYU lost one of its stars for the season to injury (McKenna Miller).  That's a big loss.

I saw one of McKenna Miller's first games in person. They played OSU in the Blue Jacket's arena when she was a freshman. First or second week of the season. OSU was still pretty good back then.

OSU won the first two sets and appeared to be cruising to an easy victory. Then Miller went bonkers and BYU won the next three sets.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The sixth-ranked Nebraska volleyball team swept Indiana 25-13, 25-19, 25-19 in its final Big Ten road match of the season on Saturday night at University Gym.

Up Next: Nebraska finishes the regular season with two home matches next weekend. The Huskers host Ohio State on Friday and Maryland on Saturday, both at 7 p.m. on NET and the Husker Sports Network. Saturday's match will be Senior Day for Nebraska's three seniors - Mikaela Foecke, Kenzie Maloney and Brooke Smith.

Minnesota clinched the B1G outright, their 3rd conference title, and first since 2015.   The only drama left in B1G is whether Illinois can hold on to the 4th overall seed (they finish with @MSU and Purdue in Champaign.

Penn St hosts Minnesota/Wisconsin this weekend, and Nebraska hosts OSU/Mland, that will settle 3rd/4th/5th in the league (likely).
projected seeds:  Minn (2nd-3rd), Ill (4th-6th), UW (6th-9th), PSU (7th-10th), Neb (7th-11th).

Purdue is in the mix to get one of the coveted top 16 seeds (guarantees hosting 1st/2nd round, provided the school puts in a bid). They finish with atIU/at Ill

Michigan appears in the tournament, though at least one win will make it a no doubt, they host NW/MSU this weekend.  Maryland may need to win both matches (at Iowa/at Nebraska).

Rutgers seems almost certain to finish 0-20 (again), hosting Minn/Wisconsin this weekend.

BYU/Stanford are still at the top of the NCAA.   RPI prefers Stanford (BYU beat Stanford in Provo early this year).

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with its eighth win a row, defeating Maryland 25-13, 25-10, 25-18 in front of a crowd of 8,139 on Senior Night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday.

The sixth-ranked Huskers finished the regular season at 24-6 overall and 15-5 in the Big Ten, which will earn them a tie for third in the conference standings.

Up Next: The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will take place on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU. Should the Huskers be selected as one of the top 16 seeds, they would host the first and seconds rounds next weekend at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. There are no tickets available for the potential first and second rounds in Lincoln, but if there are any visiting team ticket returns, they would go on sale Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Bracket

https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/volleyball-women/d1/2018

A bunch of Big Ten teams made it of course.

Dayton and Cincinnati are in, so I will pull for them until they are eliminated, which should be the first or second round.

UCF and FGCU are playing each other in round one and each team has a player that played for my HS, so I'll pull for the winner of that game, which probably won't get much farther.

I will also pull for the Midshipmen because A) they are playing Michigan, and B) they are coached by Sgt Paco who turned Wittenberg (OH) into a D3 powerhouse over the last decade and a half.

It's always a tough draw to a FF for anybody all the time (unless you're Penn St/Texas).  ;)   I will say there's a ton of familiarity in that bracket.   Nebraska has played nearly every team with a pulse in the bracket at least once in the past 12 months. (Purdue 2x, Minn 2x, Oregon, Kentucky, Colorado).   Mizzou is familiar in name only at this point.  Haven't faced Arizona though since 2002? I see Hofstra has a monster MB who hits .400+,  nice test for Stivrins/Schwarzenbach.

Hofstra with a U.N. sponsored roster.  At least 12 International born players on the roster.  Funny note, their Head Coach is making her third trip to the NCAA Tournament.  She played at Iona, and faced Nebraska in the 1st round, and has now taken Hofstra to the tournament twice (2014, 19) and her team's had to face Nebraska both times.

A lot of that due to so many B1G teams in the sweet 16 obviously, but also because in volleyball, it's common and ENCOURAGED to schedule the best OOC early in the season.  I love that about this sport.

Oregon won the second set 41-39, and the Gophers got super tight and played not to lose the rest of the way. We all know what happens when you play not to lose.

Stunning set.  I had to digest these matches on DVR late last night,  didn't see the UO v Minnesota match though.   Read about it.   Some pretty key 'challenges' in that set, so much so, Minnesota was out of challenges for the match after the 2nd set.

I do recall tOSU beating Ga Tech 48-46 in a tournament set awhile back.

UW v UI at 4pm est ESPNU
N v UO at 6pm est ESPNU
Texas v BYU 8pm est ESPNU
Penn St. v. Stanford 10pm est ESPNU

Perhaps its the novelty of a non-B1G match, or a match I don't recall watching before, but UT v BYU would be the one match I'd most want to see if I had to pick one.  Atmosphere will be bonkers, Texas perhaps bitter of not getting the 4 seed over BYU.   BYU rallying w/o their 2nd best player.    No offense to the other three matches which have happened previously this season.

My guess is that the Gophers were still rattled from the bat incident @tOSU a few weeks back. O0

I'm pulling for Penn St, Nebraska, Illinois and BYU this round.

So that means it will probably be Stanford, Oregon, Wisconsin and Texas in the Final Four.

should be two good matches Thursday, not a lot of drama today, though the BYU/UT match was very tight, for a sweep.  It was very good TV.  PSU really let that 2nd set escape vs Stanford.

Just kidding.  :) I've never banned anyone from a message board before.  Well, except myself.  I did that once.
Anyway, to answer the civil portion of an otherwise insulting question a ways back, I've always liked Stanford so I'll be rooting for them in the final 4.  But really I just enjoy volleyball and hope to see competitive matches, I'd be cool with any of the remaining teams winning.

Go right ahead and ban me. I didn't say horns down until you started trolling me with the Tom Herman tweet. At that point I was under the impression that we were engaged in some light hearted ribbing. Even when you began cussing me out I wasn't sure that you were serious. It was not until you began belching out the Tom Herman tweet repeatedly like a mental patient that I realized that you really are that big of a toolbox. Now you are editing my posts in order add add in the Tom Herman tweet.

Ban away.
Title: Re: B1G Women's Volleyball 2018

Like I said, I've never banned anyone.  I'm not going to start with you, I was just joking about that.  You haven't broken any board rules (not sure we even have those here) so ban would be an extreme abuse of power.  I would limit such an abuse only to, say... banning a Sooner or an Aggie, because screw those guys.

Also, I haven't edited any of your posts, not sure where that's coming from?  Although that would have been funny, since the Tom Herman tweet is very cool and worthy of being on every post on this message board.

So in the spirit of Christmas, I'd like to call a truce.  Are you ok with that?

Go Buckeyes! (if that's what y'all say up there)

Moneylines for Thursday
Stanford -175   v BYU +135
Nebraska -315 v Illinois +235

Spreads
Stanford -1 1/2 (+155) v BYU +1 1/2 (-195)  (If bet Stanford, they must win in 3 or 4 sets to win, decent value bet)
Nebraska -1 1/2 (-160) v Ill +1 1/2 (+120)  (If bet Neb., they must win in 3 or 4 sets to win, not a good value -160)

Illinois is a massive money line dog to win the title  +1450 vs Stanford, +1485 vs BYU (that's betting before semis)
Illinois to win the title against either opponent right now is +940.  Huge value bet, IMO.
No respect for the 3rd seed Illini.   Nebraska is a small money line favorite over the field to win the title, though would be a slight dog to Stanford head to head.   There's some arbitrage in that.

I'll be surprised if BYU v Stanford winner doesn't win on Saturday.

Title: Re: B1G Women's Volleyball 2018

I'm not.  They have mastered the art of slowing anybody's offense down, with tough serves, forcing team's out of system, making team's set to the obvious and only choice and then having such great block and floor defense.   All of this with a 'not bad' offense and a freshman setter, who has come on lately.   The reason Minnesota handled them so well this season is they had several reliable options when out of system and an elite setter.   Illinois can be that good and were in Lincoln this year.

Illinois' got that too (at least the setter part).  They are red hot.  Stanford and BYU have lots of weapons too and plus Setters.   The 3 best players in the FF are on other teams, fortunately, only one on each of them.  Nebraska will have to have good production from Sun, and particularly Sweet.  Oh yeah, Foecke has to be Foecke it is December after all.

I don't think Nebraska was the best team in the final 4 last season, yet..... there they were

in a 4-team single elimination tournament - almost anything can happen

experienced setters matter at this point...    Regardless of what happens, UNL fans and program have to be thrilled with the improvement over the season, especially considering they had a true freshman setter.

If Stanford wins then I will pull for the Huskers. I apologize in advance to anyone whose feelings might be hurt if I am rooting against their team.

Turns out Stanford's pretty good.  Probably a good thing we didn't get the chance to go 0-3 against them this season.

Stivrins a missing person in set 1.  Shaky passing hasn't helped either.   Credit to Ill.   Poulter and Quade doing their thing.  They keep the serve pressure up, this won't go 4.

where did Capri Davis come from?

did someone get injured?

did Capri just emerge in practice late?

why isn't Stivrins getting set?

Nebraska beefed it in the 2nd set

the other 4 sets were played fairly well by both squads

I know, cause I was watching!

Illinois really gifted that match.

Capri Davis.  She's a scheduled platoon left side hitter for one rotation subbing w Jazz Sweet.  She comes in on queue and gets a swing in her spot.  It is odd but Cook makes it work.  Thanks to having 3 six rotation players.

Stivirins didn't get sets early because the passing was crap.  When you serve and receive like crap and you're out of system you can't possibly set to the middle or a slide attack .  That changed a bit in set 3, 4 and 5.

Nebraska escapes.   Need to play much better to avoid a sweep on Sat .

I'll play that card, but there's no way there going to be able to spot 1 or 2 sets on Saturday.    That match was a clinic (as was the BYU/Stanford match) on how aggressive serve, and serve receive can determine a match.  All these attackers and blockers are great, but at this level, you have to stay in the match with good passing.

Illinois finally started hitting service errors which helped too down the stretch.

Very nice comeback from the Huskers, well-done!
I predict Stanford-Nebraska will NOT be a sweep in either direction.  :)

Stanford is good..  very impressive.   I'm not sure UNL can win a set.

All that said, what a year for the huskers.   8 new players and you return to the finals.  Heck of a season...  Exceeded expectations.... fans and program should be proud.

Bought 5 tickets, back in January, for the Volleyball event this weekend. Turned out my middle kid had a school concert that she didn't want to miss. Another kid didn't want to miss her own volleyball practice. What the !#?! So Mom stayed backed and took care of them.

Invited my Nebraska native neighbor and his two kids. We skipped the first match due to after school activities & homework. I've never seen so many tall people congregated in one area- the main floor concourse. Everyone but me was over 6 ft. We even saw the 6'8 Wisconsin gal. It was something.

What a match! #7 from Illinois was impressive. But Nebraska just seemed like the better overall team. Great atmosphere with a ton of Nebraska fans.

Woke up Friday and asked my kids if they were excited to go Saturday night. I heard one "meh" and an "I don't care". Put the tickets on Stub Hub- 20 min later they sold for $695...paid $390. Thank you Nebraska!

Go Huskers tonight!

A superb finals match for first time in awhile.  High level play all around.  Stanford's serve edge in sets 1 and 5 really the marginal difference in the match.

It is kind of funny to watch Stanford fans defend the gun, while Nebraska fans are snow flaking out.

You would think that it would be the other way around.

to hell THE huskers... lol

I do think it speaks poorly of their staff.   You'd also think such a liberal school like stanford would be all over gun violence.  But they won so it's excusable.

Most UNL fans are probably upset because they had a higher opinion of stanford and want to defend their team.   sports fans..

This must be one of those stories that Yahoo loves and that only exists in the bowels of the internet.
'Locker room drawing breaks the internet ...you won't believe what happened next...'

Bottom news, faux outrage, etc.

So what is the success rate of a VB player coming back from a knee injury the likes of the one that was suffered by McKenna Miller?

Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook was named national coach of the year by VolleyballMag.com on Wednesday, and three Huskers were chosen to the website's All-America teams.

Cook led the Huskers to the final four for the fourth straight season, as the Huskers also advanced to the national title match for the third time in the last four years. With a roster featuring eight new players and five freshmen, the Huskers went down to the wire with No. 1 Stanford before falling a few points shy of back-to-back national championships. Early in the season, Cook became the 10th active Division I head coach and 27th all-time to reach 700 career wins.

Senior outside hitter Mikaela Foecke and sophomore middle blocker Lauren Stivrins were named first-team All-Americans by VolleyballMag.com, just as they were by the AVCA earlier this month. Senior libero Kenzie Maloney was named a second-team All-American, and freshman setter Nicklin Hames received honorable mention.
