UGA at LSU
« on: October 08, 2018, 07:44:06 AM »
This potential battle of the unbeatens was of course spoiled by Florida.  Anyway, I see UGA opens an 8.5 point favorite, which surprises me.  I'd take LSU to cover, if not win outright.  I'm still not sure what UGA is doing exactly.  The OL does not look like it did last year, and they have had some injuries and some young guys filling in there.  Swift has been hampered despite denials, though he looked better against Vandy (so would I).  The defense is still prone to coverage mistakes.

Of course, I don't have an idea where this game will go, but that isn't new.  Obviously it should be close barring turnovers etc.

While UGA's running game is nowhere near last year's (predictably), if Florida could run on LSU, then UGA can.  What I don't know is if UGA's defense can play to the level Florida's did, at home.

Fromm is on a higher level than Franks, so UGA should be able to score 27+ on the Tigers.

The defense seems to be "OK" except when they have a blown assignment.  I'm sure Smart goes crazy when that happens.

I'll chalk it up to youth.

If Phillips is back for UGA, that should help the run D.  His absence was glaring at Florida.  How much it could help, I don't know.  As a whole they aren't as good against the run sometimes as they should be.  I didn't much like the scheme we used against Ole Miss' run game, other than to say as part of an Overall Plan, it worked.  One of the personnel in the UF game wasn't up to the task, more so than a scheme issue.  Well....I guess you could say it's both....Mullen successfully got the kid out of position over and over, in that sense it is a scheme thing.

I'm a lot more concerned with the pass rush, or lack thereof.

The Dawg OL is dinged up pretty good.

Some "analysis" was suggesting UGA might pull out the blitz packages for the LSU game.  They have been very vanilla up to now for obvious reasons.

If LSU pressures Fromm the same way they pressured Franks, that stadium is going to be all red and black by the end of it as UGA tosses it's 5th passing TD of the day.

Losing Chaisson at the end of the Miami game is really starting to show.  He was a holy terror, but it's almost inconceivable that Aranda could only count on one guy to get pressure, or that as many 4-star bodies as LSU has to throw at a team, none of them can get off blocks or complete one of several pass rush moves I know they teach a couple times per game.

They have 5 days to figure something out or nut up and play like top 300 recruits.  One more non-existent pass rush and this will get out of hand.

If I were O, I'd seriously consider taking Devin White off of special teams.  See if he could maybe stay in every series on D if he wasn't running the field several times per game where another body could likely be inserted.  I didn't catch it live, but upon further review, every time White took a breather, Florida put a scoring drive together.

Taking a bunch of babies to Baton Rouge for their first test is scary.  However, this is the road trip of the year for the Dawgs and many, many fans are going.  This won't be Rudy all over again but I am expecting a surprising number of UGA folks there.
LSU is 7th in the 247 talent tracker which is good enough to beat anybody, especially in that stadium. I would take the 7-8 points if I gambled.  Hot Rod with a 50 yarder to win 30-28 as the babies grow up a little more.

I'm surprised at the spread, which opened at 8.5 and dropped to 7.  I'd take LSU and points.

I see it as a pick'em game decided on key penalties, turnovers, special teams stuff, etc.

Take Georgia and give the points. Easy winner and not because LSU is bad. Georgia is just good.

I see UGA winning this one easily, but I confess I thought LSU was going to beat Florida so what do I know?

We all take a shot at guessing outcomes in competitive games.  If we were really good at it, we'd be making money in Vegas, not posting here.

I'm pretty sure my guess over a season would be no better than 50-50 against the line, which means I would lose.

It would be like roulette without the green zeros, but they have 3 green zeros in this game, plus.  3.6 zeros.
