I would say I'm glad I'm not Sumlin right now, but he gets $5 mil a year for whatever, so I could deal with that.

As stupefying as that comeback was to watch, it shouldn't have surprised me so much.  Blowing big leads in 4th quarters has been an Aggie trait under Sumlin.  This wasn't the first time that's happened, though it might be the biggest lead to evaporate.

I don't know if it's conditioning, mental, or what, but it's happened enough times for enough seasons that I think it's safe to say Sumlin doesn't know how to fix it.

I think Mack Brown had a point; this might seem like a bomb in Sumlin's career, but really it depends on what happens from here on out.  If they win out, or only lose to Alabama or something like that, fans and admin will forget this ever happened and be happy.  If they continue to implode a couple times a year as per usual, this was probably the beginning of the end.

I know the fans are tired of losing to LSU and Alabama.  They've had success against other programs, but only one victory over those schools in ten tries.  I don't know how many games Aggie has to win for Sumlin to keep his job, but he can probably survive another loss to Bama.  If they lose to both Bama and LSU again, 9-3 might not be good enough.

That was really hard to swallow, much less digest.

Eesh.

Still, it's only one game and the first one at that. And if Rosen uncorks like that on the PAC all year, this game will look a shade different in hindsight.

Rosen really is good, but I have a hard time thinking he'll duplicate that again.

UT fans had attached a phrase to Chief when they shipped him to us, "3rd and Chavis."  That never really manifested itself at LSU, but we did experience what came to be known as "late and Chavis," referring to having a lead, perhaps even a comfortable one, and switching the defense late from the aggressive look that's been working into a clock-draining exercise which trades yards for time.  Sometimes it did what it was supposed to do, but it also cost us some games, notably the '12 Alabama game.  It's not a prevent, technically, it's just a deviation of the base where the corners start playing 5-7 deeper than they have been, typically with safeties back, and the front not pressuring as hard, giving all their focus to lanes, keeping backs in front of them, and preferably not getting out of bounds.  It mostly prevents big plays and does eat up clock, the problem being that if you hurry and the QB can catch fire when not under pressure, it can also be ate up quickly down the field.

I saw it again in that game, and while the mind-boggling offensive decisions Aggie made were unfamiliar, that defensive shell they crawled into was not.  Aggie basically said "Here, have at it, we just don't think there's enough time left."  I guess Chief also was expecting some first downs from his offense.

I just have to wonder if Rosen is going to get more gifts like that.
